5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook and More
This was one of those cookbooks that I glanced through at the bookstore, liked it, put down and then went on my way yet it never left my mind. I've found when I do that I might as well buy the thing the next time around. So I did and I was not disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Seductions of Rice
The paperback version/publisher's closeout of this book has grainy black and white photos. From other reviews, I gather that the hardback version has stunning color photos. The same great recipes and travelogue are in both books. (I personally wish I had spent more for the book with the better photos.)

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook
Great travel writing, great food writing, great photographs. I never tire of reading this cookbook. The authors stories are endlessly entertaining. We cook a lot from this book, Rice Congee, and Thai Fried Rice are 2 of the standby meals my familynever grows tired of. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes!
I wrote a review for his book, "cooking with coconut flour" and I had to write one for this book also. The recipes are great, easy to understand and even easier to prepare. I really enjoy his recipes and am looking foward to future cookbooks using coconut products, especially coconut flour. I love this way of eating and am happy to have recipes to make life that much easier for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Delicious
I am not a gourmet cook.I like recipes without exotic ingredients and complicated processes. But I also like food that tastes GOOD.This book has it covered! If you're looking for ways to get more coconut products into your diet, this book is the one to do it.I've bought a number of other books with that purpose in mind, but the recipes called for ingredients I'd never heard of and couldn't find even in health food stores.Just as Bruce Fife has made complicated concepts on nutrition easy to understand in his other books, so he has made cooking with coconut easy for those of us who are not skilled in culinary arts.Thank you, Bruce Fife.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packs in both sweet and savory recipes
Fans of coconut will find Coconut Lover's Cookbook by Bruce Fife to be a compelling little guide which packs in both sweet and savory recipes for use of the coconut, from healthy blender drinks to main courses, biscuits and breads, and desserts. No photos, but the easy dishes don't require them, while the range and variety of coconut dishes will delight coconut enthusiasts. ... Read more

This book is great, I had grilled some ribs before, but never to this extent or variety. So far I've tried a number of recipes from the book and not been disappointed once, whether it be baby back, beef short or spare ribs.If you want a book to give you not only recipes but also a tutorial on how to cook your rib of choice then look no further, in fact whatever you want for rib-grilling tips look no further - buy now.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Grill Sergeant Strikes Again
This is another great grilling how-to book from the "Grill Sergeant" and it covers all of the bases. From basic ribs to more exotic recipes, Raichlin thoroughly covers preparation, smoking, grilling and basting (mopping) many varieties of ribs.Of course, he also includes recipes for rubs, marinades, mopping and finishing sauces.Easy to read and follow step-by-step directions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just as much a NYC history without the oyster.
The Big Oyster is an excellent history of New York City.Unlike many of Kurlansky's books, which always kept the spotlight on the subject (like cod and salt) and its role in history, The Big Oyster often strays far from the oyster. Many of the tales of NYC, from business and prostitution to transportation and development have nothing to do with the oyster.Had this book kept the focus on oysters it would have been much shorter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Weaves the story of oyster farming & dining into the greater history of New York to provide a lively culinary & cultural expose
For centuries New York was famous for its oysters which played a hue role in the city's economy and culinary fame. Oysters were the city's most celebrated export, a staple food, and more, and THE BIG OYSTER: HISTORY ON THE HALF SHELL celebrates this era, from food markets to the extinction of natural beds around the city as the decades passed. From cultivation techniques to recipes, THE BIG OYSTER weaves the story of oyster farming and dining into the greater history of New York to provide a lively culinary and cultural expose.
4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious history...
BIG OYSTER is Kurlansky's latest food-themed history (following his previous COD and SALT). It differs from his previous books in several ways, but still serves up a tasty morsel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook I own
I received this as a gift years ago when I was learning to cook. The recipes are not too difficult, and most are simply excellent. The author is also very good at giving you fairly accurate preparation times, so you have a good idea of what you are in for.The only caveat:this book is NOT for someone on a low-cholesterol diet. The recipes are full of butter and cream, which is probably why they are so good.Perhaps my only critique is that you may want to reduce salt on some of the recipes. But that is a minor quibble. This is a fabulous book that runs the gamut from salads to soups, roasts to an excellent carrot cake and amazing chocolate rum cake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Professional text and reference. Buy it if you make sauces!
`The Sauce Bible' by culinary educator, David Paul Larousse is one of those very few books you find which are specifically written for culinary professional. The first clue is the high list price of $54.95. The second is that textbook specialist, John Wiley and Sons publish it. The third is the fact that the book began as an essay on sauce painting, which the average foodie will admire, but, to my knowledge, will virtually never try to reproduce. The fourth clue is that the quantities for many of the recipes are a lot larger than one would need for a dish for four or six. The fifth clue is the large amount of narrative and graphics devoted to explaining the relationships between members of the various sauce families, based on the famous French `mother sauces'.
1-0 out of 5 stars extremely inaccurate and ill-researched
I was given this book as a gift, and as a professional chef in Washington, DC, I was very disappointed. The inaccuracies and bumbling research do not warrant a reader's funds nor time.In my opinion, this book is useless to both professional and pedestrian cooks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate Facts

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT !
This is a great cook book. I hate to cook. I'm good at it, but I hate it. I want recipes that taste good, are healthy, and are easy to put together. I almost never buy cookbooks. Maybe one every 4 or 5 years. I saw this & what first struck me was how bright the pictures were. The recipes used alot of things I already keep on hand, such as ground turkey, salmon, turkey bacon, broccoli, splenda (of course), apple cider vinegar & so on. The directions are easy to follow & don't take alot of time. I especially like that with each recipe they have the nutrition info. This book lays out how many calories are in each serving, fat, protein, etc... There are not alot of recipes in this book, but what they have put in this book is very good. Its enough to get something different on your daily menu. There are a few recipes for sweet breakfast type things, although you could use these just as easily for dessert. You get recipes for pumpkin loaf, cinnamon coffee cake, blueberry corn muffins, etc... There are side dish recipes such as cucumber & onion salad, broccoli salad (I actually made the broccoli salad today. Its very good & my hubby loved it.) , orange almond salad, etc... There is a great recipe in here to make your BLTs (using turkey bacon) just a little differently using a recipe with light ranch dressing & some herbs & spices. There are lunch to dinner time recipes such as vegetarian chili, baked salmon with orange ginger sauce, chili seasoned meatloaf, etc... There are healthy desserts such as frozen raspberry ice pops, Pear Crisp, light lime cheesecake, etc... And there are also a few drinks such as Banana Raspberry Smoothie, elegant egg nog, and a hot chocolate recipe. This is definitely worth the $8. I couldn't be happier with it. Finally, a cookbook I can enjoy ! I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures!
Though there aren't a lot of recipes in this cookbook, the ones that are offered are wonderful. I'm a visual person and the picutres make it so helpful. I can't wait to try everyone...and I hope it looks the same way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical approach fast recipes great basic book
The book has a number of strong points: the recipes are usually low in fat, there are many suggestions for vegetarian dishes but also options to add in meat, every pulse you can think of is covered and a good number of the recipes use time saving products such as already processed barbecue sauce or tomato paste etc. This has its benefits but also, in the case of some items, if you are located in Europe the suggested items aren't readily available. The book extensively covers different types of rice, grains, beans etc, and contains information on soaking and cooking times. There is a large section on deserts, rice puddings and other kinds of sweets with some original suggestions. Overall, however, few of the recipes sparkle with creative flair, many are variations of what you intuitively mix together yourself if you are moderately creative and have a well stocked kitchen. If you are an experienced cook looking for creative and exciting input, i.e. you flick through books and then assimilate suggestions to incorporate into your own cooking you might want to have a look at the Ajurvedic cookbook by Mirjam Gazin Hospodar, which also has many grain, rice etc recipes, however not low-fat and more time intensive than the rice beans and grain cookbook. If you 1) are not experimental when cooking2) want step by step solid instructions 3) don't like spending ages in the kitchen 4)like healthy low-fat fare 5) want a good summary of grains, rice, pulses and how to treat them and don't already have a book, then this book is a very good choice for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and basic but not bland
This is the book I have been looking for.I have always liked beans and grains but what to do with them other than tabouli and chili? The recipes are for simple basic food, ingredients that can be found in most supermarkets and I don't need my french dictionary !I had the Red Lentil Vegetable Stew for supper tonight and it was great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid Stevia recipe collection
After all the positive things I had heard about Stevia, I decided to give it a whirl.Coming by good Stevia recipes is quite difficult ... perhaps because many people don't know about it and/or because it doesn't taste exactly like sugar.I have tried several recipes out of this cookbook, and I haven't liked all of them.So why am I giving it 5 stars?Because it beats the competition. Also, I think that if you have never had Stevia before it takes awhile to acquire a taste for it.The recipes that I liked the most were ones that had another "sweet" ingredient in it to help dampen the bitterness of the Stevia. For example, I love the Carob Chip Cookies, Carob Brownies, the fruit sauces and the oatmeal banana bread.I did not like the coconut peanut butter cookies or the lemon pudding. If you try a recipe and do not like it, don't give up!Move onto the next one and try again!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one to buy
I've tried several of the stevia cookbooks that Amazon carries and this is the one.The recipes use whole-grain, healthful ingredients - so you end up with food that's not just sugar-free but overall good for you. They taste great and are easy to adapt and tweak. We make muffins based on his banana bread every week. Also this author skips the evangelizing, etc that most of the other books are padded with - just "here's a natural sweetener and how to use it."Really excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The recipes are yummy!
My favorite recipe is the stevia fruit gluk. It is delicious and easy to cook. The apple pie is also terrific. Most of the recipes taste better than sugar recipes, because stevia tastes so good. I would recommend that youbuy a copy, then another 5 copies for your friends. Read more

Molly Stevens' book is the best cookbook I own, and I own quite a few. I especially like her braised pork recipes. Her "Red-Cooked Pork Belly with Bok Choy" is the best braised pork I've ever cooked. It is truly authentic Chinese and it tasts heavenly. Buy yourself this book and a Le Creuset Dutch Oven and start braising!

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT - uncomplicated but....WOW
The recipes in this book are often somewhat complex, but they are easy to follow and the results are wonderful. Braising does not aways take a long time either. One of my favorites is Soy-Braised Chicken Thighs with Star Anise and Orange Peel - 40 minutes total.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
I fell in love with the style of this book immediately, but we all know that can be deceiving!I then tried several recipes and they lived up to my expectations. The techniques are well explained, offering you the chance to explore new flavors and combos.I think it's a great mix of classic dishes with more modern ones.In particular, I am blown away by the vegetable braises. It is so rare to see such a large number of braises that don't use meat!I can't wait to make my way through the entire book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Must for "Foodies"
As a card carrying "foodie" and egg lover, I couldn't resist getting this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference on Technique and Recipes. Buy It.
`Eggs' by French / English chef and writer, Michel Roux is a book about which I would applaud with much hoopla, if it were not for the fact that there is a probably equally good book, `the good egg' by Marie Simmons which has a greater range of recipes and, I believe equally good advice on all matters eggy.

this is my new favorite cookbook.i ordered it on a whim after reading a ny times article recommending it as a good gift for newlyweds.i'm not one, but it's perfect for me nonetheless.the photography is to die for, and the recipes and tips are well thought-out.there's a good mix of simple preparations (such as how to make the perfect poached egg) and fairly complex (such as custards and souffles).the recipe for cherry clafoutis in this book ranks with the best i've had, and got me rave reviews from friends.but really the reason to buy this book is the photography, it's just beautiful! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift Book and More...
This is such a perfect little book to give as a gift. I have tried two of the uses mentioned in the book--frothing oil and water for my dry skin and freezing oil in my ice cube tray for use instead of butter. Both were great! I highly recommend this book--it's filled with interesting historical facts and fun new uses to try.

After buying a house with a large fig tree in the winter, my wife and I were astounded to see the size of the crop that appeared come the summer. So what do you do after you've begged all of your friends to come over and take bags of figs home, made fig-strawberry jam, eaten figs with cheese until you can't any more, and still have piles on the tree and higher piles on the ground? You run out and buy the Fig Heaven cookbook of course! With 70 excellent recipes, you will surely find many an excellent idea, from fig pinenut pasta to fig, green tomato, purple onion salad.Of course, you will still have enough figs so that your friends can take home all they want, but you will also fill your summer table with delectable dishes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Figs
An absolutely incredible book on figs - from the mythical and biblical history to the botany and cultivation to the recipes, Fig Heaven is the definitive fig cookbook. For those of us without access to fresh figs on a regular (if ever) basis, Simmons supplies recipes that utilize a number of dried figs that are available year round in most larger grocery and specialty stores. Recipes are easy to follow and very good! From simple salads, desserts and even preserves to my favorite dinner (chicken, couscous, and dried fig salad with toasted almonds)Simmons covers a range of tastes and styles. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crab Cakes for Everyone
After watching a show on how the crab cakes that we buy in the supermarkets are made, I decided that I never wanted to eat one of those store bought crab cakes again.
5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Crab Cakes
I must have two hundred cookbooks, surveying a panorama of food tastes, but one I was looking forward to trying out, "I Love Crab Cakes", may be the one that I'll cook from most often! This is everything in a cook book I had hoped it'd be--and it can only give me more enjoyment as I sample its many preparations for that delicious delicacy. Recipes are simple and the ingredients generally available. And, if they aren't so readily available, Tom Douglas gives an easy to follow guide to concocting the ingredient. Hands down . . . this is one of most helpful books I have come across!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Crab Cakes: The definitive source on everyhting that is The Crab Cake
Tom Douglas does a terrific job with this book.It is laid out perfectly, starting with tips and methods on how to make this delicious dish. With 50 different recipes he leaves nothing out, the reader is bound to find one that matches their personality along with their taste. As someone who grew up in the land of the crab cake, Douglas is the expert on the subject. He includes the Gulf Coast method, the new Pacific Northwest Dungeness crab cakes, and of course the Chesapeake Bay recipes with Old Bay Seasoning and the staple, Blue Crab. This small recipe book is a perfect gift to anyone that has at one time eaten a crab cake and has wanted to find the perfect one.As he proves in the book, "the most delicious crab cakes of all come straight from your own kitchen."We covered his book recently on our website and he was nice enough to let us use one of his amazing recipes on the site.Check this book out, it will not dissapoint! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book but not an Encyclopedia
This is a nice book. It has a fair number of spices and herbs listed, I would say the ones most commonly used in the American kitchen. It also includes international recipes and even a chapter on Flavorings as listed in the title. Overall a good source of information and a good read. Beware however this is by no means comprehensive, there are other books out there with much more detailed information on spices and hebs, unfortunately I am still searching to find one that I used to own that desrved the title encyclopedia. When I find it I will re-post.

5-0 out of 5 stars Herb & Spice Heaven
Herbs enhance and enliven meals. Herbs are the leaves of fresh or dried plants. Spices are the aromatic parts: buds, fruit, berries, roots or bark. Most spices thrive in tropical regions, while herbs can be grown in your own garden or indoors in a sunny place. Some herbs can also produce spices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything from Agar-Agar to Zahtar
If you had this book, you'd know that Agar-Agar is a seaweed and Zahtar is a blend of sumac, roasted sesame seeds, and ground thyme. Encylopedia indeed! I purchased this book to learn about herbs and spices so that I could cook flavorful while cutting salt, fat, mayo, and other bad things in my diet. If you only get one one kitchen reference on this subject, make it this one.I started giving this book as a gift to friends and family and now they're giving it as a gift as well.
