4-0 out of 5 stars More than just a cookbook
I bought this book mostly for the recipes. It is full of the "philosophy according to Ted" (which I love by the way). The book may leave you wanting more if all you want is a wild game cookbook.I do have to say that the recipes are excellent. My kids beg for the Deer Stroganoff. It is also one of my all-time favorite dishes to eat with the deer that I harvest.I have tried several recipes from the book and all were accurate and very tasty. Thanks to Uncle Ted for creating more than a cookbook - I read from it while I am cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading This Book is a Meal in Itself
I don't hunt and haven't yet prepared big game dishes, but I'm always on the lookout for new recipes with which to expand my repertoire. This book made me resolve to take up cooking big game.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Man'sCookbook
As my husband loves to hunt wild boar and wild duck, I bought this book for him as a farce. However, it has turned out to be a great purchase. We both were at a loss as how to clean, store and cook wild game until "Kill It and Grill It" came along. This is the only cookbook I've bought that my husband hasn't complained about and it's an entertaining and "colorful" read as well. ... One of the best books I have purchased.Easy to follow receipes and great ones also.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Cookbook
This cookbook is really awesome and I am so happy that you offered it for sale at such a great price. Sandra Lee and Rachael Ray Cookbooks are my favorite and I highly recommend them as well as watching their Food Channel Programs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than her first cookbook
My mother gave me this book and her first cookbook, too.Hard to believe, but this book seems worse than the first one.She must get paid a bazillion dollars by the Processed Food Association because no one in their right mind would use so much crappy processed food in their recipes. She seems totally oblivious to the fact that fresh food is available in her regular supermarket and that its just as easy to use in recipes. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Useless cookbook for families
We don't all live by farmer's markets or in big cities. Too many ingredients (some hard to find in many places) and too long preparation time for stressed out families. I'm sorry Jamie, but I don't have time when I come home from work to crack open a coconut and shred it for fixing a sallad which, by the way, my family won't like. The amount of fat, especially saturated fat in the recipes is astounding. Fine for once a week, but for everyday?I was very disappointed in this cookbook, I'm sorry to say.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love Food 911 or Tyler's Ultimate, Buy this Book
To put this review into perspective for you it is written by someone that has been cooking for 25 years, and concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years. My favorite cookbook is "The Professional Chef" from the Culinary Institute of America.I would definitely consider myself a foodie.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
I enjoy Tyler's books. There is enough "extra" narative that make his books read more like a good novel. It is also obvious that he has had success with the recipes in the book and they are what they say.Too often you find recipes in other cookbooks that are well written but do not come together.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have anything in your kitchen cupboards, this is for you
First of all, let me say that Alton Brown is my hero, and if he wrote a book about knitting needles I'd probably buy it.That said, this really is a great book that I'd buy no matter who wrote it.Part user's manual, part field guide, and part cookbook, this concise little gem of a book has just tons of great information packed into it.The section on knives alone is worth the book price, IMHO.Shopping for skillets and not sure if you should get anodized or cast aluminum?Wondering what that funny plastic hand-cranked gizmo you found in your Grandma's bottom kitchen drawer is?(It's a bean frencher, by the way.)Not sure of the difference between an orange peel and a pizza peel?If any of these questions apply to you, then get this book.Besides, what other book in existence explains how a Thermos works eight pages after a recipe for Baba Ghanoush?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, simple, and very informative
Alton Brown's books are the few cooking oriented books I've actually read cover to cover, then refer to again later. He advocates simplicity, explains clearly why he would choose a particular cooking implement over another (often more costly) one, and does it with fun prose. He appeals to me particularly because if told the "why' of something (which he always does), I am much more likely to remember and use the advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gear for your kitchen with your budget
I would strongly recommend this book for those who are starting out on the path of cooking, are looking at upgrading what Grandma gave to them, or are considering increasing their stable of cooking utencils.Alton gives the reader the skinny on different implements, small appliances, and the tools needed to make that perfect quiche. With his typical aplomb and humorous style he explains with science the whys and wherefores of how things work as they do.Based on this book I've certainly grown to appreciate certain tools I've had for several years, thrown out some unused appliances and whatnot, and look at those television ads touting the latest and greatest slicing and dicing utencil with great skepticism.Kudos to Alton for making an easy and fun to read book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a dummy's cookbook for smart people
This book is incredibly informative. It's everything I wanted to learn about food, but was too lazy to ask -- where it comes from, what to look for when buying it, how to cut it all up... and that's aside from the great recipes. This mass of info is fortunately so intelligently written and laid out that it never really feels like overload. I'd put the book on my coffee table if I didn't need it so much in the kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book I've Needed
I like to eat - other people's cooking. This can be a problem as friends sometimes expect you to reciprocate and invite them over for more than beer and peanuts. Thanks to this book, I was actually able to have a dinner party - well two friends - over to the house on Saturday and feed them a roast chicken and green salad. That may not sound like much to you but it was a big deal to me.The nice thing about this book is that it doesn't make you feel stupid even if you know nothing about cooking. For know nothings like me, it can start you at the beginning, but if you already have your four standby recipes it looks as if it could help you double or triple that number.I recommend it for everyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Cookbook
I recieved this cookbook for Christmas last year, and it has quickly turned into the most used in my kitchen! Everything I have made from this book has turned out incredible, especially the meatloaf recipe. I also recomend the Cook's Illustrated cookbook, which includes an amazing Macaroni and Cheese recipe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overall Cookbook
I am a huge fan of cookbooks that cover everything and this one does. Not only does it have great recipes, they are easy to follow, with tips on good equipment, ingredients, and cooking techniques. This is one of my top two cookbooks!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best cookbook!
This is the best cookbook I've ever used...that's right used. Many (most) of my cookbooks are read front to cover but are rarely used due to the fact that even the simplest dish seems far too complicated or "eccentric".This cookbook has great everyday recipes and special occasion recipes as well. What makes me love my America's Test Kitchen cookbook as much as I do is the fact that they make the most impossible dish seem within my reach.I consider myself an experienced cook while my husband is newer at it and we both are able to get plenty of use out of this book.I can't recommend it enough. One suggestion is to buy the reinforced tabs for ring binder hole when you buy the book your are bound to need them but you shouldn't let that be a deterrent in buying this book. ... It's very helpful with cooking techniques, prep. techniques, etc. If you don't know how to cook, this book will show you. It even gives suggestions for side dishes! I love it!

Even though I am a seasoned cook,I really enjoy this book. Remember even an old dog can learn a new trick now and then. This book is organized well, has detail oriented instructions, supplies suggestions for side dishes (with recipes), and more.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great basic cookbook
If you are a gourmet chef this book may be far too basic for you but it is great for a beginner like me.I have two kids under the age of two and have been able to cook a decent meal from this cookbook every night for the past month that I have owned it.My husband has been very impressed with my new found cooking abilities and all but one of the meals I have fixed has been good.I would recommend this book to anyone who has lost faith that they can ever cook well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The New Professional Chef Scores a 10
As a professional chef myself and a graduate of the California Culinary Academy, I keep 2 copies of this incredibly wonderful cookbook.4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
Not being a professional chef, this book was quite intimidating. The info regarding ingredients was great, and the recipes so far have not let me down. This is a great aid in helping a normal guy like me prepare a very nice meal for company the RIGHT way.A great appreciation for fine cooking is developed after studying this book. The ingredient measurements in weight were a bit of a stumbling block for me at first - if you don't have a scale, you had better be an excellent guesser.Overestimating and buying too much veal loin can be pretty expensive. This is THE book for basics and, of course, a fine meal for that special occasion when company is planned (most meals here require several steps and multiple sub-recipes, and are not fast, Betty Crocker projects).Well worth the price for the smile on your guests' faces. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, plus the science, with excellent organization
This is probably the best cookbook we own (and we own a lot of them). If you have ever read Cook's Illustrated magazine, you will know what to expect. The recipes have been developed painstakingly by the editors through experimentation (and they explain the process they use).It is comprehensive - it has every classic recipe I can think of and quite a few I wouldn't have. The ingredients are typically attainable in normal supermarkets and the techniques are explained along with the recipes, so you don't have to go searching.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Great cookbook, I love the methodology of their recipe testing and what the results of varying or substituting ingredients were.I suppose it's a kind of scientific cookbook for food geeks and I love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars its pretty good......
this book is a good cook book. it has so many recipes in it... you can find anything. i have made about 10 recipes from this book and they were just okay. i expected them to be WONDERFUl, just because the book says that they have been tested again and again, but they were just so-so. but this book does have a TON of cool and useful information in it, and im in culinary school, and it has helped me to write so many papers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is A Hoot...
I love this cookbook! I first encountered this cookbook in my local library. Within two days, I owned my own copy. So many great ideas, so many interesting sections. I love the sidebars printed in red throughout the book. Look to these for some good inside tips. Ideas like finger bowls with sliced lemon when you are entertaining with foods like spare ribs. How to set up your cocktail bar...yes this cookbook has recipes for some classic cocktails. A section titled 'Fish School', giving page after page of detailed descriptions of types of fish, and what to substitute with if that fish isn't available. Sections on grain, pasta, breads, ect. Get one for yourself, and then get one for all your friends and family to give as Christmas or birthday gifts. They will never forget this gift, or who gave it to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book for someone in college
I must admit I have no clue about most of the stuff out there (I just learned how to cook recently). I took this book out of curiosity from our college library and found it very useful. For someone like me, its a life saver.. This book has tons of useful new and old hints. It is true some of the hints are from the past or based on common sense, but not everyone knows it (hello, this book said hints not new hints and not everyone knows everything). After reading this book I've decided to buy it for myself and my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL - FULL OF GREAT INFORMATION
This is a great book.I didn't know so many common household items could be used in such an effective way.I have tried several cleaning suggestions for around my house and my friends and relatives are really impressed!
5-0 out of 5 stars Haley's Comet...hahah
This book is chock-full of ideas for the perplexed at home. Out of tomato paste? Not sure what potatoes to buy? And what the heck is the difference between baking powder and baking soda and does anyone even care> This book is especially valuable for the section on substitutes, like allspice berries or ground allspice. You can use a mix of nutmeg and cinnamon in a pinch. Well, I love jerk seasoning and it does require allspice, a member of the pepper family but if you don't want to run to the store and pony up four bucks for a small jar of it, I'm right with you and Mr. Haley on that. Haley has recommendations on homemade cleansers in the companion book by Haley on cleaning hints, but there are a few ideas here. Mostly, this is a basic home ec book. This is like Heloise's Hints for the Hopelessly He-Man. For guys who want to learn to keep house, this is a fine book. I'd recommend both as a set for anyone setting up house. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous coffee table book :)
I love to get this book out to just look at the beautiful pictures. Sometimes I use it for inspiration though. It is not really an instructional book per se. There are "directions" for making the cakes but you really have to be very experienced already.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Guide for Experienced Baker
Colette Peters is one of the world's best bakers and cake decorators.I purchased this book with that in mind. The book did not turn out to be what I thought it was going to be.I thought that it was going to teach you generalized ideas on cake decorating and how to create your own designs. This helps you a little, but it really is more about creating the design that is displayed in the book. The designs are open to personalization, which is good.A good thing about this book is that it includes a chart that tells you how manu people a cake will serve depending on the pan size and/or shape. It gives you the basic rules on cake tiering and design which is very helpful.Overall, this is a good book to purchase if you are really into baking and cake decoration.I would recommend it to people who are starting a business or aspire to be master bakers, open a bakery, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, beautiful book. Another Colette Peters must-have.
She just keeps getting better and better. Beautiful cakes with FRESH ideas that you can easily incorporate into your own creations. Great use of color, and wonderful new ideas for gumpaste, fondant and royal icing. Fabulous inspiration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Reforming Fast Food Junkie!
As a guy who LOVES fast food (give me anything fried!), I've been disappointed to find my metabolism slowing as I get older.Translation: I now find myself packing on the pounds when I eat fast food. This book shows quick and easy ways to prepare some of my favorite fast food items, in a way that tastes just as good, but isn't hard on the waist line. It's a good thing, too, because I don't know if I ever could have given up the drive thru!

5-0 out of 5 stars The secret is out!
As someone who craves McDonalds french fries, but desperately steers my car away from the drive-thru, it's nice to know that I can still get my "fast food fix" without the guilt.I was wary of this book when I first heard about it from a friend and thought that the recipes would take way longer to make than they do.Plus, how could you actually make healthy french fries that still tasted like Mickie D's?I was surprised to find that not only was the food easy and quick to make, but it tastes really good.My days of avoiding the drive-thru are over.Who needs it?I think I've found this year's stocking stuffer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Food
I don't think you need to be a "fast-food junkie" to enjoy this cookbook. While the calorie- and fat-cutting recipies will certainly be enjoyed by fast-food lovers, the not-too-difficult, easy-to-follow directions let anyone create food that is low in fat but also fun and different.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
2-0 out of 5 stars A few winners, but mostly boring and flavorless
I really wish this book had reviews written IN THE BOOK.Because...some of the recipes are really quite good and flavorful, but most, like 75% or more, are really boring.I enjoy the Mexican Cornbread, the Tastes-like-Chile-Rellenos, the Coq au Vin, the Steak Fajitas; but mostly, I'm adding in the salt and fat that they tried to take out since it would be too boring otherwise. There are just not enough other flavors to make up for the lack of salt and fat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't live without this cookbook
I also bought the forget it entertaining book. These both are the best slow cooker recipe books I've ever bought.I am not one for soups or soupy dinner often. This book saved my dinners. With 3 young kids and a business to run, my time is valuable. These dinners are fabulous, easy and practicle. Most ingredients are in most kitchens and soups are a very small part of the whole book. This is a must have for every family! ... Read more
