3-0 out of 5 stars would not be 1st choice
Be careful if you take this book into the kitchen. It is printed on the cheapest of papers and tears and damages easily if it gets wet. The recipes are o.k.; the information is o.k., although conflicts with some information in her Coconut Diet book, but nothing very interesting or inspirational is shared.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Information
I bought this book to add juice to my diet as well as for a juice fast to detox. However, this book is missing important information on this topic. This book is very helpful for ADDING more juice to your diet, but it doesn't cover the necessary information on a strict juice diet commonly used for cleansing (detoxing), illness, and weight loss.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative...well laid out & easy to read
This book is EXCELLENT and one which I highly recommend. Yes...it's from 1992 but it all still stands true. The one thing about eating this type of food/juice and eating this way in general is that the underlying benefits and facts don't change. It certainly is not a fad but based on principles that stand the test of time. You can buy a book on this subject that is 50 years old or one that is brand new...they will say pretty much the same thing. This book is very well laid out tho' and is packed with a wealth of information. It points out the benefits of juicing and what each vegetable and fruit is good for...and how to drink them, along with some excellent recipes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong here.
This is no casual companion, but a professional bar manager's handbook which was over two years in the making: as such, it goes far beyond the usual focus on recipes to cover all the basics on how to set up, operate and manage a successful beverage operation. All kinds of bar operators receive tips on trends, marketing, equipment and products, and more. Professionals seeking a comprehensive manual to the business can't go wrong here. And yes, it does include recipes - lots of 'em. And a companion cd-rom packed with information.
5-0 out of 5 stars The bestbar management book in the market!
The Professional Bar and Beverage Manager's Handbook is a hefty hardback, and serves as a comprehensive guide to the successful management of bars, pubs, and night clubs. This volume comprises nineteen chapters that cover diverse topics such as how to make a gin and tonic, hiring and firing employees, to tips on how to recognize fake IDs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Those Planning To Open A Bar Need This Book
I found the format of this book to be very sturdy. The hard cover and strong binding almost guarantee this book will have a nice long life. The larger size of the book allows for larger print inside, which I found much easier to read than many smaller format items.

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite
Concise, entertaining, educational, and -- best of all -- interactive (lots of tastings!)In a word: wonderful!I keep coming back to this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow. This book is what every wine introduction aspires to be.
For years, I was in the category of people who liked wine, or at least SOME wine, but wasn't quite sure how to proceed. Every so often, I'd buy one of those wine tasting kits, or pick up a book for wine beginners, but they never got me very far. Either they required a major financial and social commitment (HOW many bottles do you want me to buy for this tasting? and do I have, say, 8 other friends who'd want to participate? can they all show up on Friday night, without me having to cook?), or they threw around terms that they expected me to understand intuitively. It didn't help a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sets the record straight
Everyone knows this event was controversial. It is the tasting that allowed premium U.S. wineries to begin the meteoric rise in quality (and price) that we see today.Arguably, it is what launched the globe's infatuation with the "New World Style".
4-0 out of 5 stars Great story of an event that changed the world of wine
This is the story of the wine tasting event that put California and Napa Valley on the elite winemaking map.For those who don't know, in 1976 a British wine merchant stage a blind tasting of elite French wines against California wines. The judges were all French and expected to judge in favor of the French wines. But, the California wines scored much better and suddenly French dominance of winemaking was being questioned everywhere.George Taber was the only journalist at the event and wrote a small article for Time magazine. This is his story of what happened that day and the impact it had on the world wine industry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to get started
As has been said previously, there are few pricing details in this book. Not that they would help me in 2004, since this book is getting on in years.Other than that, it's an excellent reference for things you probably aren't thinking about. It takes a realistic approach to the problems a brewer will face and helps the reader to understand the many layers there are in opening their own brewery. It's not just a matter of deciding to do it and start brewing.I think some readers want their hand held through the whole thing, which obviously can't be done.Great book for anyone else.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money
Vague, vague and vague. Did I mention there's few specifics in this book? Certainly not worth $80.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its helpful!
That first review, dont worry about it.This book is helpful your not going to find any prices in this book on purpose, because prices on things change so much.If thats all your concerned about than this book isnt for you. This book is extreamly helpful and lots of information on how other breweries did it.It also includes a sample business plan. This is well worth the money! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners too
There's much in this book that would fly over the head of a novice, but for someone interested in getting to know Bordeaux - really get to know Bordeaux - this is a great introduction (if you want to spend the money). Color photos demonstrate the beauty of the chateaux, and there is a wealth of information here. What vintages were considered good at what estate and why - that's one of the most important things a novitiate can learn, and one of the most difficult to pick up on the fly. Here it all is for everyone...even the seasoned pros.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only in your dreams
The contents of this great coffee-table book are mostly drawn from Parker's other publications. Mostly his other books on Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone Valley, and of course the wine advocate (Parker's famous bi-monthly review of the world's wines). It conatins some very nice pictures of Chateaux and related scenery. However, most (if not all) of the wine producers featured in the book produce wines that are unfortunately reserved to the super-rich due to their prices. In a way, this book resembles one of those beautiful coffee-table books about Ferraris, Porsches or super models, which showcase masterpieces only to be dreamt about by the common man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and up to date info
After reading both "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing" and "How to Brew" How to Brew wins hands down. This book just feels much more up to date than Papazian's book. As a pretty new homebrewer (only 1 year experience) I found this book answered alot of the lingering questions and concerns I had. It also has a good habit of presenting more than one approach to doing things and gives the pros and cons for each. This book also has a good amount of more technical information too, so really think this is a good buy for novice and experienced homebrewers alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars A series of step-by-step processes perfect for the novice at brewing
HOW TO BREW: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO BREW BEER RIGHT THE FIRST TIME is more than another beer recipe book: it's a series of step-by-step processes perfect for the novice at brewing, explaining terminology, techniques, and even more intermediate processes. A 'crash course' in the basics leads to more extensive discussions of hop quality, fermentation processes, yeasts, and the later considerations of lagers and specialty brews. There are plenty of brewing books on the market, but this is the perfect place to begin, moving deftly from introduction to more advanced brewing.
5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete book for homebrewers
I picked this book up just before ordering my brewing equipment three years ago. 3 years, 52 brewing books read, 110 batches, 6 Best of Show awards, and a lot of long nights of drinking later, it is still the best book I own on practical brewing procedures.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition
Amazon asked me for a review. For me, brand new to homebrewing, this book is disappointing.A major flaw is the poor quality of the paper, print style, organization, and just read-ability of the book.It is not very inviting.I was about to return it to Amazon, but would only get only get a few bucks back after the return postage; therefore, I will donate it to my local library.I am still looking for a good homebrew starter book for Extract brewing, which may lead me to All-grain.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Must Praise This Book
This book helped me in a lot of ways. Not just the know how to brew a great beer, but also the know how on ways to update, upgrade, and the inspiration to create new things on my homebrewing setup.A must have for the brewer of all ages and also all levels of skill.

3-0 out of 5 stars A valuable reference, but not a great improvement over 2nd Ed.
There is a wealth of information in this book...as there was in the 2nd Edition. Some of the recipes, ingredients and beer style information are updated. But I just cannot get past a feeling that Charlie isn't *really* up on the homebrewing gear that's out there and in common use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but confusing
I have been using this book for a few months. The recipes I've tried are generally tasty, if sometimes bland, but it sorely needs an index by food, eg, beef, as another reviewer commented. Some of the recipes require creative thinking, and a bit of cooking experience. '3 large potatoes' can mean different things to different people, and if you want to use another type of potato?Equivalents in ounces or cups would be helpful. And "x cups of pasta" cooked?/uncooked?A novice would have a hard time with this. And some of the titles are more colorful than helpful.A meat salad doesn't mention the meat in the title, so finding it without an index is pretty difficult.

4-0 out of 5 stars Losing the extra me
It is a helpful book for me while doing Weight Watchers....the recipes are well written and easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars College-level culinary schools in particular must have this reference
If you want to enter the catering business, there are plenty of lighter guides on the topic on the market - but if you're really serious about professionally entering the business, you can't be without THE PROFESSIONAL CATERER'S HANDBOOK: HOW TO OPEN AND OPERATE A FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL CATERING BUSINESS. A cd-rom supplements the weighty exploration which is actually a detailed manual of step-by-step instruction on all the basics. From bookkeeping and handling profits and loss to considering the pros and cons of professional equipment, there's no better guide on the market. College-level culinary schools in particular must have this reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
It was nice to know the different types of cheeses, regions, and history but what this book lacked, and what I was looking for, was an explanation of tghe cheese process behind making these cheese. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the history and geography lessons, but I wanted to know more about the actual cheese. I mean what kind of milk do you start with, what additives, what temperature, what types of processing. So, for me it was the wrong book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have Cheese Will Travel
Although I wont be taking the trip the book was intended for for a couple of more months, I've found it to be a wonderful read, loaded with the who, what where of cheese, but much more useful information as well to help plan a trip. Mr Jenkins really knows his cheese and how to write an interesting book.

4-0 out of 5 stars More of an epicure's guide than an introduction.
`Cheese Primer' by a leading American `fromagerie' (sic), Steven Jenkins is a typical Workman Publishing slick treatment of a subject in a relatively inexpensive trade paperback format which is great to look at and promises lots of useful information on it's subject. This, like most of Workman's similar titles largely delivers on its promise, but it does not quite live up to its moniker as a `Primer'. The primary reason for this is that it does live up to the promise that the author is `America's most opinionated authority'.

4-0 out of 5 stars The standard intro for those starting out
This book is the standard for those starting out. It is often included in brewing kits and covers brewing in a broad manor. Charlie's motto is to relax, don't worry, have a home brew. This is very good advice. Most of what we do while brewing can be done in many ways and the processes have a high tolerance for variations.
5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of homebrewing
If your interested in homebrewing, this book is the place to start.I've read it cover to cover several times over the years and have used it as reference many times. It's easy to understand for a beginner and is where i learned the most important phrase of homebrewing, "relax and have a homebrew".

4-0 out of 5 stars All you ever wanted to know about home brewing.
I got interested in home brewing last fall ('03) and went to a shop that specializes in equipment and kits. From there, I wanted to get into learning more about the process and devining my own concoctions. This book is a recommended upgrade to their beginners kit and I purchased it later after brewing a kit or two. After reading this book, I am very confident that I know what to do to get the tastes out of the different breeds of hops and grain mixtures. This book actually goes a little further than I needed it to, as it goes into the chemical processes with the different ions in the water, and such as that. However, if you are a beginner brewer and want to delve into your own creations, this is where to go.It's a great work to set you on the right track. It has everything you WANT to know and some that you could probably care less about, but worth adding to the shelf if you enjoy the hobby. ... You can't go wrong with Wine Report 2006, which was rated the 'Best Wine Book in the World 2004 and 2005' by Gourmand International: it packs a wealth of updated facts in a truly pocket-sized - albeit thick - edition and is a 'must' for any wine buff who wants to latest news on the greatest wines.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very handy and up-to-date resource for the wine lover...
Wine Report 2004 by Tom Stevenson is an exceptional reference for both the expert and the beginner.I'm in the wine business and have dozens of wine books which each have their merits.Mr. Stevenson's New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia is one of the benchmarks of the business and is respected world over. The Wine Report 2004 is a much smaller book in comparison, but it's chock full of information.Relying on local experts to cover the various regions of the world is a well chosen strategy. The Grapevine section at the beginning of each chapter provides juicy (no pun intended) gossip for wine insiders. It's also great to read the opinions of the experts and their predictions/hopes for the future of wine in their part of the world. The information inside is as current as it gets.Simply a great pocket reference for the wine insider.Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'Must-Have' for traveling wine lovers

4-0 out of 5 stars Good beginner book
This was one of my first homebrew books.I now have a whole bookshelf of brewing books. The two things that set Homebrewing for Dummies apart is that it covers many topics without going into great depth and it has an excellent index. This book is a great quick reference for beginning brewers though when it isn't loaned out I still look things up in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference guide for beginner brewers
I've been a homebrewer for three years now, and have learned a lot in that time.It took an entire year prior to just get down the vocabulary used in homebrewing terms, and this book helped with that process all along the way. It's chock full of the basics of homebrewing, and I refer to it each time I brew a new recipe. It's definitely for beginners though. As my brewing techniques have advanced, so have my references.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good general guide book.
I have been brewing for about 3 years now and still find useful items in this book.I have still not moved to all grain, but for the beginner this is a good all around book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Brand-New Beginners
For beginners, I would rate the book 2 stars. For more experienced winemakers, this would be a fantastic reference book.
5-0 out of 5 stars New to Winemaking? So am I.
A friend over seas, living in a country where one must make their own, recommended this gem to me last year.Since then, although possessed of no previous knowledge or experience, I succeeded rather easily in making good wines. I also compared the wine from the recipes in Anderson book with highly recommended kits from Vino Del Vida.Although much easier and quicker, the kit product, while very satisfactory according to those who have tasted it, did not measure up to the superior wine made from Anderson's recipes.4-0 out of 5 stars Great 'recipe book' for beginning winemakers
Some books are meant to be read, and others are meant to be used. This one definitely falls into the second category. Spiral bound, this falls neatly open to whichever wine recipe you are currently working on. There are recipes for apricot wine, kiwi fruit wine, ruby port, sparkling wine, and everything in between.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book for winemakers
This book is must have for anyone who is in wine production business. The authors discuss viticultural considerations as they relate to winemaking as well as sensory evaluation and the importance of each analyte in the spectrum of winery operations.I bought this book with "Successful wine marketing" and have greatly benefited from these two books. 4-0 out of 5 stars Wine Analysis and Production

4-0 out of 5 stars Cellar space
Its a good coffee table book, Some great photos with good ideas, and some general information for those looking to build a cellar. I'm glad to have it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great coffee table book
Beautiful pictures, it gives you plenty of things to talk about andthink about if you are planning a wine cellar. This book does not give a lot of details on why things are done the way they are - it is more of an idea book.I've read a few other books on the details of wine cellar construction, so I already knew why things are done as they are in many of the pictures.
