Really Good!
The book is a good book in the sense of what the subject is:drinks for the preps.There was mention of what to "wear" and such, but it didn't get into that, look for other sources like the Preppy Handbook for that.Otherwise, a really good book, fun to read, recipes, and a great sense of humor!You can tell that the authors had fun writing this book.

Preppy memories, anyone?
To really appreciate a book about preppy drinking in the 80s, you had to have been a preppy drinker in the 80s!Reading TIM brought me right back to the days of drinking Tab & rum while pulling all-nighters in prep school and college...This is a PERFECT gift for a fellow preppy friend =D.

Booze for Blueboods
Most of this book is funny and dead-on accurate, however the appendixes on movies, music, and especially books were complete drivel.The excerpts from prep school brochures were a nice touch if somewhat random."Tipsy" is a good intro to drinking even if you're no fan of preppiness.Also, it makes a great companion to Lisa Birnbach's peerless "Official Preppy Handbook", which touched on alcohol but didn't go into the detail of "Tipsy". ... Good things do come in small packages
Lots of easy, great recipes. If for no other reason, you should buy this book just for the basic english muffin recipe and scone recipes.

The Best Resource for Tradition as well as Recipes!
A friend and I have recently begun taking tea and we love the true British and Victorian style of tea houses.I wanted to find a book for her that was a great resource on the history of afternoon and high tea as well as providing some recipes to go along with the information.This was the best book I found.No other goes into as much detail about the history of tea that this book does.The only downfall is that the only illustrations in the book are line drawings.There are no photos.Still, that didn't keep me from picking this book over several others that did have nice pictures, because in the end, the content of this book superceded any other.

I've recently bought 4 different tea books and this is the best one I have so far.There are a lot of the expected recipes for traditional tea time fare, with some minor omissions I felt.The print left something to be desired, some of it was blurred, but if you just want to buy 1 English tea book, this is it. ... Excellent information, great little book on juicing
I'd never heard of Jay Kordich, but from his bio in the book he's REALLY dedicated to the concept of juicing -- a pioneer, really. His enthusiasm is welcome, he knows what he's talking about and virtually every recipe is worth making! I bought a Breville juicer from amazon.com and I wish this book had shipped with it!
It's a good book...
I definitely think it's a good book if you're just starting out.In the back it gives you a lot of info about the different vitamins and minerals what fruit/vegetable has it and how it helps your body.I actually ordered this book for someone else, and they were so grateful.Bottom line is it's not a waste of money.Good Luck everyone!

Solid
A good introduction. This in combination with Jeff Cox's book gave me a solid start

First book you should own
This is the first book you should buy if your making wine.One fault I find with the book is that it assumes your starting with fresh grapes, while most people probably start with fresh juice or must.
Very good starter text for the budding winemaker
This book coached me through making my first wine last year and it was extremely helpful. Iverson walks through the winemaking process in a way that helps the reader determine the best approach to acheive a desired outcome.Read more

A little dry in the middle
If you're in the business you should read this book.

Blood and Wine: the story of the Gallo Wine Empire
This is an excellent book.The author does an outstanding job of telling both sides whenever a conflict arises.Obviously a great researcher, Hawkes pulls out information that was deliberately hidden. An Utter Hatchet Job
The book is ponderous garbage.The last third of the book is devoted to a one-sided account of the inter-family trademark infringement lawsuit that Gallo Winery won after a trial and won again on appeal.As one who is intimately familiar with the case, I can tell you that her account is pure fiction - - wishful thinking on the defendant's part. ... Good Drinks Good Fun!
This is a good book for people who want to know how to mix drinks and how to mix them well. It also has some non-alcholic mixes for the kids parties and stuff! And the cover is water proof and has a place keeping ribbon too!

Very good!
Got this book and was immediately impressed by the loads of recipes. However, there are some good ones missing and some of the recipes are tinkered with a bit (as most are), but that's just nitpicking. Overall an outstanding recipe book! Well worth the price!

Great for bartenders, not great for browsing by ingredient
This book is great for bartenders, as it has about every drink imaginable.If you're looking for something specific, its organized alphabetically making that easy.If you're more casually looking for something to try, based on what you have available in your home bar, for example, its difficult to browse and find something you like.It's all there, its just difficult to find.Organizing the recipes into chapters according to their base would have been more helpful.

Another bartender who loves this book.
I own four or five drink recipe books.This is the one that travels with me when I tend bar.I've bought several copies of it over the years -- the single downside of this book is that, if you turn your back on it, one of your fellow bartenders will steal it from you.It's just that good.
The most complete of all the drink guides.

Nice assortment of beers from around the world
The book begins with a very short section on calculations and basic identification.There is a good assortment of beers from around the world contained in this book.The authors concentrate on extracts, but the recipes offer choices for alternate methods and different yeast.Not a bad book, but I have not utilized it like I have other brewing books.It is unique in that it tries to duplicate popular beers, with alternate methods. You will find that it is quite difficult to copy a commercial beer perfectly.One should have a good understanding of brewing before attempting to use this book.

Buy this book
I do agree with some of the other reviews that Tess and Mark's second book, Beer Captured, is much better than this one, but this is still a great book. Especially if you are interested in brewing some lesser known beers of the world. This book is worth it for the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale recipe alone!

Awesome Book
I own a small brewing shop in Dunedin South Island New Zealand. I have made many of the recipes and have found them fantastic.Many of my customers have moved from kit brewing to mini mash brewing; they can't beleive what a difference it is too experience the great styles of fresh brewed beer from all over the world.I now offer these recipes fresh milled in the shop and by mail, many customers have now brought this book and love it.

One of few books on the subject
Perhaps this book would be best utilized by a geologist interested in learning how soils effect vines/plants. Professor White introduces the book by stating the common notions of "terroir" but concludes irregardless of the term, "the soil cannot be ignored as an integral component of wine [grape] growing." This is indeed the premise behind this study.
Soils For Fine Wines
A great book on beginning growing. To get the full understanding about what Mr white is talking about the book Science in Agriculture I feel, should be read first. Great section,along with the pros and cons, of different types of irrigation. Seems to lean a little heavy on the soils of California. For the person not growing grapes but enjoys good wine it is an excellant sorce of how the wine gets its flavor. The principles presented will aid anyone growing almost anything.

A long-needed book
In "Soils for Fine Wines" Robert White sets to provide information needed for better understanding of how soils and their properties relate to management and wine-grape production. This book is a long-needed one indeed; most other viticultural books are discussing soil as an environmental factor only in passing.

Outstanding resource for amateurs and pros alike
This is far and away the best all-around bartending guide I've seen.The authors go way beyond drink recipies and discuss history, glassware, bar equipment, and drink making technique.It's easy to read and understand.Highly recommended.

Take It From A Pro
Well, I'm a professional bartender and was getting ready to order some more of "Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guides" for some of my bartender friends when I noticed the "pulpfoto" review and just felt I had to respond.I disagree with everything he said, and wonder if we have different books!
This is a great book
I can't stand it. The Ultimate A-to-Z Bar guide is a great book and I'm confused by the "pulpfoto" review below-I think it is misleading. I've looked through the Seagram's Bartending Guide including the index for the last 15 minutes and I cannot find "Caesar." So if the review is based on this, then where is it? My version of the Seagram's book is 1995 (which seems old but it's the one where pupfoto's full review of the guide is listed. Also see the review of the Seagram's Guide where pulpfoto says "The Ultimate A-Z Bar Guide has a weird index where you need to know the main liquor involved before you can look up the drink!! What if you dont know?" Well, duh! As the name, the Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide, says it's A to Z so you look in the main body of the book. If you're looking for "Bushwhacker" look under the Bs, if you're looking for a "Knickerbocker Cocktail" look under the Ks. I think the four indexes are terrific and I have not seen another book like this where you can look up by 1-drinks by alcohol type, 2- drinks by primary non-alcoholic ingredient, 3-drinks by classic categories or 4-drinks by special category.The other reviewers have got it right. ... I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about, but this book is beautiful, wonderful and incredibly informative.I love Jay Kordich and he speaks the truth -- as his book shows -- it's all about fresh foods and sensible eating.The recipes in the book are fantastic.This book is even better than his "Power of Juicing" book.A classic.

I don't recommend this book.If you remember Kordichs informercials, you know all about the "Juiceman's" claims that juicing solves basically every health problem under the sun,and how eating 'dead'foods like meat is awful.A bunch of bunk!

As good as a book around
This book covers many principals of viticulture and enology, and does very, very well. Comprehensive scientific overview
Jackson provides a well-written overview of viticulture and oenology, withacademic rigour and a bias towards more recent research.This book was very useful in my studies through the Cape Wine Academy, and Iexpect it to continue being a useful reference.Make sure to pick up the second edition, it contains significantly more material than the first.

Absorbing Read on Robert Parker and the Wine Industry
Elin McCoy's 'Emperor of Wine' is an absorbing account of the rise of wine critic Robert Parker and his influence on the international wine industry.McCoy's biography works on a number of levels:

Parker seems like a good guy who yanks wine into the modern age of pop culture and instant millionaires while retaining his own ideals. The author obviously likes Parker and is knowlegeable about the wine culture, its cat fights, penchant for snobbery and elitism and jealousies. The impact of Parker and America on the modern wine business in France (especially Bordeaux) and worldwide is detailed and fairly assessed. The best second book on brewing you should get
Wow.Radical, indeed.The etymology is apropos;radical comes from the Latin radix, meaning root.Mosher gets to the root of all sorts of subjects with his witty style and erudition.This guy knows his stuff.If there is any grain or sugar or spice or herb in this world that has ended up in a brewpot, Mosher has probably written about it.
The most fun you'll ever have reading a brewing text
Funny thing is, I have read How to Brew and Designing Great Beers, written by two of the other "raters" of Radical Brewing.
Homebrew World-Altering
The strange title fits.It is written with wit, humor, passion and loads of knowledge.I've got a couple dozen brewing books, but I keep coming back to this one.
