5-0 out of 5 stars great advice for what wines to keep on hand...and a great read
I bought this book for help in selecting ten wines to keep on hand for all occasions. And it worked! Now, whether I'm roasting a chicken or ordering in Thai food, there's always a good bottle to go with dinner. The bonus is the all the fascinating info (why Ph matters) and anecdotes (chef Patrick O'Connell on how easily he turned his whole staff into wine enthusiasts). Beautiful photographs, beautifully written. A great gift for the holidays or for engaged couples.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book!
WHAT TO DRINK WITH WHAT YOU EAT is a beautiful book filled with great ideas of what to wines and other beverages (from iced tea to lemonade) to serve with different dishes. The photography is absolutely mouth-watering!It's fun to flip through and read about what to serve with everything from chicken to chocolate brownies. This book is definitely worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book I've been looking for ever since I learned how to cook.
After learning to cook, I looked forward to serving new dishes to guests -- but found I was hesitant about entertaining because I never knew what wines to serve.I was tired of being dependent on my local wine store for recommendations that often seemed to be more about what they wanted to sell than what went with what I was cooking. WHAT TO DRINK WITH WHAT YOU EAT provides such thorough recommendations that it's easy to come up with the perfect match.I'm looking forward to entertaining again, now that I can serve wine and other drinks with equal grace to the food I prepare. And my non-drinking guests benefit, too, given all of the innovative recommendations for non-alcoholic beverages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice on What Goes With What
It seems that years ago there was a lot of discussion about what foods went with what wines. They that seemed to go away with the advice to drink what you like whenever and with whatever you want. But that just didn't seem to work. Sometimes the food or the wine would so overpower the other that they just did not want to go together.
5-0 out of 5 stars The item of choice for home cooks who are well beyond the basics
PERFECT PAIRINGS: A MASTER SOMMELIER'S PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR PARTNERING WINE WITH FOOD isn't for the casual cook: it's the item of choice for home cooks who are well beyond the basics and seek to understand the underlying logic of pairing foods with the wines available from around the world. Evan Goldstein is a restaurant industry veteran, as is his wife, so PERFECT PAIRINGS comes from a professional's point of view and offers the depth of perception on some twelve grape varietals paired with over fifty recipes by chef Joyce that other books couldn't touch in a wine analysis alone. Explanations of food and wine pairings focus on the elements which bring both to life with excellent pointers on other desirable pairings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Daughter Enjoying It Immensely.
I bought this book for my daughter who is a great cook. Upon returning home from a trip to Italy recently, she remarked to me that she wished she knew what kind of wine to order with her dinner. Now she knows.I have lost count at how many times she has thanked me for the book and told me how much she is enjoying it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great
This was my first book on wine.I've read numerous books on beer, so that was my background coming into the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Primer
This book is very easy to read and is a good introduction to the world of wine. The tear-out card in the front of the book is easy to carry with you to help with choosing the right wine for your meal at a restaurant. The glossary explains unfamiliar terms and the chapter headings are logically organized. Without being patronizing, the book explains the basics of wine making, flavor characteristics, and food pairings.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner, could use a bit more organization
For someone who's a complete novice to wine (I qualify), the book will start out very enjoyably, especially if you are interested in the wine making process. It gives you a good understanding of the types of wines, and what the names on the labels mean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful book from Karen MacNeil
I pre-ordered Wine, Food and Friends by Karen MacNeil and could hardly wait to receive it.In her true fashion, Ms. MacNeil has created another wonderfully accessible book on wine and food. The Wine Bible (her first book) is a staple in any true wine enthusiast's library and her new book is also a must. The recipes, along with wine pairings, and sharing of Ms. MacNeil's vast knowledge and expertise in wines and the wine world, make this more than just a visually beautiful book ... but a book one will turn to again and again for advice on entertaining with food and wine.Ms. MacNeil exhibits a warm, witty and personable style of writing that is universally appealing.I will be sending many copies of this book to friends and family! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As good as a book around
This book covers many principals of viticulture and enology, and does very, very well.5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive scientific overview
Jackson provides a well-written overview of viticulture and oenology, withacademic rigour and a bias towards more recent research. This book was very useful in my studies through the Cape Wine Academy, and Iexpect it to continue being a useful reference.Make sure to pick up the second edition, it contains significantly more material than the first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profits walking out the door?
This is a collection of tips on how to reduce your operating costs for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (including soft drinks). The book does spend quite a bit more time on alcoholic drinks, so you'll get more for your money if you have a bar or a restaurant with a liquor license. In general, the book is well written, easy to understand, and a quick read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great Book! I Found These step-by-step guides easy-to-read, and easy to understand! The books are packed with information. They reminded me of "cliff Notes" from my college days. The information is comprehensive without the fluff you find in so many of the more expensive books out there on the subject. The books are also packed with resources such as phone numbers and the web sites of the companies they are discussing - there is no "theory" just great information. ... Read more

Which came first: the chicken or the Eglise-Clinet? Well, if you're a disciple of author Sid Goldstein--and you will be--you've had that Bordeaux decanted long before you even thought of shopping for those Cacciatore ingredients. And "wine-first" cooking is precisely what Goldstein--vice president and director of marketing communications at Mendocino, California's Fetzer Vineyards--so ably demonstrates in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book on Wine and Food Pairing
A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry".With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. This book is a nice addition to any cookbook library.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant food and wine paring
We joined a wine group about 15 years ago.We get together about once a month to taste commerial wines in a blind tasting. This past year we decided to taste 3 different wine varietals, first without food and then the same 3 wines with food.I was a little concerned as to what to serve with certain foods so researched some books and decided to order The Wine Lover's Cookbook: Great Recipes for the Perfect Glass of Wine.I decided on the Veal-Stuffed Manicotti with Roasted Yellow Pepper Pesto.I choose the wines that were suggested, Sangiovese, Zinfandel and for the 3rd wine I choose a Pinot Noir.Without food the Pinot came first, then Zinfandel and Sangiovese. With food the Sangiovese came first then the Zinfandel and Pinot Noir last, just as the book suggested. The food was outstanding with the wines and we had rave reviews. I have also made many other delicious recipes from this book, using ingredients I never thought of using. Some recipes are a little time consumming but in the end its worth every minute. This is a wonderful cook book.I can hardly wait until our next tasting!I think I might make the Pizza with Peppered Shrimp, Canadian Bacon, Mushrooms, & Feta Cheese, sounds good doesn't it?I just ordered The Wine Lover Cooks with Wine. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for wine lovers

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reference on Spanish Cuisine and Wines
`The Foods and Wines of Spain' by culinary journalist Penelope Casas was the only comprehensive coverage of Spanish cuisine when it was published at the urging of Craig Claiborne in 1979 and it is probably still the only book in English which aims at covering the entire range of Spanish cuisine. As such, it stands among some of the other notable American books on national cuisines such as Diane Kochilas `The Glorious Foods of Greece', Jean Anderson's smaller book on `The Food of Portugal', Marcella Hazan's `Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking' and the granddaddy of them all, Julia Child's `Mastering the Art of French Cooking'. Casas shares in this tradition by being published by Child's publisher, Knopf, and having the same distinguished cookbook editor, Judith Jones. Since I have never seen an unattractive book published by Alfred E. Knopf, I am certain this book benefits from this association.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful recipes
A truly sensational cookbook! The Spanish truly know how to live and enjoy life through their food and wine! Most of the dishes are on the heavy side, but I guess that's why they have a 2 hour siesta afterwards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Food Folklore
Dabney captures the culinary culture of the Appalachians. Wonderful anecdotes and reminiscing carry the reader along. The Michie Tavern Apple Cobbler recipe is excellent (Almost like dining there again!). There is a factual error relating to Kentucky Burgoo. Dabney writes that this was first introduced to Kentucky by Col. Jaubert in 1810. Jaubert wasn't born until about 1840 according to census records and his grave marker. This error was no fault of the writer, though. Marion Flexner's 'Out of Kentucky Kitchens', which was sourced, also includes this error.

All I can say is this book is AWESOME.You must get it.I have never seen such quality, and old time cooking, and history wrapped up in one cookbook like this.I wish there were more books like this one.If we don't write down the knowledge these people had, and how they survived, and lived...we are making a tragic mistake.I cannot wait to start making some of the food listed from their recipes!I just saw this book last night at a bookstore in town.Don't hesitate to get this book, you won't be sorry. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A SELECTION OF ED'S JOURNALISTIC WORK.

4-0 out of 5 stars entertaining, yet slightly dated now
Elizabeth David's "An Omelette and a Glass of Wine" is an entertaining read for foodies, although, containing some essays she wrote during the 1950s, it has a slightly dated feeling. The section on "potted meats" belongs in that category, as do the food market and restaurant prices she lists in many of the pieces.5-0 out of 5 stars A tour down memory lane.....
This is my first Elizabeth David book, and I intend to read many more. I've been a fan of M.F.K. Fisher for many years and read and enjoyed her books thoroughly. David's writing is somewhat similar--though not as personal--at least AN OMELETTE AND A GLASS OF WINE is not terribly personal. Still, David shares many aspects of her work and travel that allowed me to feel connected to her in a personal way. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
This is a very interesting book to read and play with, especially since there is such a dearth of books that advise on food / wine pairings beyond simple colors. This book not only recommends kinds of wines, but explains the why and how of it - additionally, most of the recipes - almost all of them - include wine as an ingredient.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Original Treatment of the Subject. Buy It!
`Lobel's Meat and Wine' by Stanley, Leon, Evan, Mark, and David Lobel (of Lobel's Meats in upper East side Manhattan) plus Mary Goodbody and David Whiteman totally reversed my negative attitude toward `cooking with wine' books, and has seriously brought into question my review of the Lobel's earlier book, `Lobel's Prime Cuts'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most sophisticated cookbook in English
Looking back to 1970, the year this book was first published, puts its sophistications in context and underscores the enormity of its contributions.America was deep in culinary ignorance, eating out of cans and supplementing that metal-tinged blandness with gut-busting mountains of artificial 'foods'.America was lost somehwere between the post-war meat-and-potatoes era and the chemical concoctions of the 80s and beyond.Small glimmers of possibility illuminated the occassional suburban cocktail party, when hostesses under the influence of Julia Child trotted out a few hotel-food hors d'oeuvres, and a few ethnic enclaves still held up a candle of flavor, but America was largely a culinary wasteland.Servings were large, everything was bland, and mealtime had become TV time.Without flavor or family, American meals were effectively dead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wine tasting for the advanced wine taster
An amazing work which should be praised to the heavens by those advanced wine tasters who want to better understand what it is they're seeing, smelling, tasting and feeling. And why. Not a book for beginners, this is a carefully structured work of high calibre, right up there with the other landmark winetasting works by Amerine, Baldy, Broadbent, Noble and Peynaud. Every serious wine library should have a copy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting history and interviews
Talk about a novice!I am counted among those who know nothing about wine except what I think is tasty - you might say I don't know my Syrah from my Reisling.I know that I've had a few delicious wines, and I swear I'm going to try to write down their names when I'm at a restaurant, but invariably forget. The Renaissance Guide is a helpful reference to a person like me as it contains guidance from real experts.I thought that the interviews captured both the personalities of the chefs and the knowledgeable authors, but also gave useful information - and they were fun to read. While to a true onephile, like the character in the movie "Sideways," this information might be considered basic, to most of us the primer on wines in the second chapter will be informative. And for the person who already knows wine, I'm certain that there are nuggets and ideas that they will enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A book for the wine snob and the novice.
I got this book for my step-father the wine snob and he loves it.This is high praise coming from the man who hates most wine books and thinks he knows everything already.Added bonus- I love it too.Very helpful for a novice like myself, great writing and beautiful design. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Gift
This book offers something many guides lack: context and a true passion for the topic. The rich history and current culture where food and wine pairings are developed, is delightfully described with rare energy and insight. This is an ideal gift item for those you know who love wine, or are curious to learn more. ...
