5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic, simple, advanced
Echoing so many other rave reviews, I have to say this is one of the most exciting cookbooks I've hefted (and it is hefty!) in a long time. It seems like nearly everything that I've eaten in Italy or seen on an Italian menu or read in another Italian cookbook has a straightforward, canonical recipe in this tome. It was like discovery, uncovering secrets again and again. I was breathless turning pages in my favorites sections, and kept returning to the book for days, unable to pull myself away.
5-0 out of 5 stars A truly great book
There are a great many things to like about this book and very little if anything to dislike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks again King Arthur
I pre-ordered this book and looked forward to receiving it.I can tell you after trying 2 recipes in the first few days, it was well worth the wait. This book could replace all of my other baking books. The recipes are indeed not intended for dieters, but for those who love to bake and would like to provide healthier alternatives to their families. The pumpkin bars I made were received with raves at the party I brought them to.I also made the Saurkraut Rye bread which is moist and delicious, and healthy with 5 grams fiber per serving. The nutrition info is provided which is helpful. There is also a useful explanation of the various whole grain ingredients.I look forward to trying more recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I like to eat healthy and I love to bake!Until now, the two did not often go well together.I would substitute some flour for whole wheat, try fat alternatives, etc... with mixed results. No more! The first two nights I had this book I read it like a novel. There is so much good information and I wanted to see everything in it.I have since made 3 recipes: the easy whole-wheat bread, oatmeal cookies and peanut butter cookies and all came out great.I even substituted organic cane sugar for standard white sugar in the cookies (though I wouldn't risk that with breads) and they were fabulous.
4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for your Baking Library
Like their New England neighbors at Cook's Illustrated, the King Arthur bakers are dedicated to testing and re-testing, and above all, technique. There's a good dose of baking science, too - this is a volume Alton Brown and Rose Levy Beranbaum must assuredly have acquired for their own libraries. The knowledge that both Cinnamon and Garlic can impair the rising process in breads is in itself worth the price of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Southern Cooking
Paula Deen creates recipes to tempt your tastebuds in this collection of recipes. They are simple to make, often requiring only those ingredients that are on-hand in your kitchen. The results are satisfying and delicious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quickly becomming my favorite cookbook!
This book has been out for about 10 years now, but I only picked up a copy of it about a year ago and it has quickly become one of my favorite cookbooks. THE LADY & SONS SAVANNAH COUNTRY COOKBOOK is chock full of not only delicious recipes, but most are fairly simple to prepare.
4-0 out of 5 stars This looks like a good one.
I can't wait to try more of the recipes in this book.I have a lot of cookbooks, and many of them contain recipes I know I will never make, either because they're too complicated or just don't appeal to me, period. This book, however, lists recipes that are generally short and simple, and the food items look very down-to-earth and appetizing.I bought the book in the first place because several of my friends at work said it was their favorite and contained honest-to-goodness "real" food and meals their families like.I think they're right about that. ... Editorial Review

Warmly effusive and dear yet gritty, Paula H. Deen seems mythically Southern. But this cooking luminary, proprietor of Savannah, Georgia'sLady & Sons restaurant, is the real thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars what can I say?
the book is by Paula Deen so it has to be great! My experience buying it through Amazon was the norm - great prices, prompt delivery, and product just as described.........who could ask for more??

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing great
Read the recipes carefully, mistakes abound. Desserts pretty good, alot of box mixes, etc.. Really doesn't teach alot about cooking, but recipes are easy and some are very quick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrumptous
I absolutely love Paula and this is the first cookbook of hers that I've bought. The book has a great layout (cakes, pies, cookies, bars, etc.) There are a few pictures (they are not on the same pages as their recipes) that make me want to bake even more! Everything in the book sounds so delicious but the thing that really got me was her pound cake. Now she has about 5 or 6 pound cake variations - I tried the cream cheese variation. Over the past 6 months I have been searching for "the" pound cake recipe and have tried a ton of different ones always with disappointment. When I tried Paula's I kept my expectations low and I was blown away!! It actually tasted like pound cake, not too sweet, not to floury--just perfect!!! I can't wait to try the rest of her recipes, for each ten I looked at I would deffinitely try at least 8 and consider the other 2! A minor disappointment is that some of her recipes call for pre-made cake mixes. Although it is great for cutting down on time I suppose, I don't see the sense in putting pre-made mixes into a cookbook. Still doesn't take away from the flavor or temptation of her desserts. Excellence! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great advice for what wines to keep on hand...and a great read
I bought this book for help in selecting ten wines to keep on hand for all occasions. And it worked! Now, whether I'm roasting a chicken or ordering in Thai food, there's always a good bottle to go with dinner. The bonus is the all the fascinating info (why Ph matters) and anecdotes (chef Patrick O'Connell on how easily he turned his whole staff into wine enthusiasts). Beautiful photographs, beautifully written. A great gift for the holidays or for engaged couples.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book!
WHAT TO DRINK WITH WHAT YOU EAT is a beautiful book filled with great ideas of what to wines and other beverages (from iced tea to lemonade) to serve with different dishes. The photography is absolutely mouth-watering!It's fun to flip through and read about what to serve with everything from chicken to chocolate brownies. This book is definitely worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book I've been looking for ever since I learned how to cook.
After learning to cook, I looked forward to serving new dishes to guests -- but found I was hesitant about entertaining because I never knew what wines to serve.I was tired of being dependent on my local wine store for recommendations that often seemed to be more about what they wanted to sell than what went with what I was cooking. WHAT TO DRINK WITH WHAT YOU EAT provides such thorough recommendations that it's easy to come up with the perfect match.I'm looking forward to entertaining again, now that I can serve wine and other drinks with equal grace to the food I prepare. And my non-drinking guests benefit, too, given all of the innovative recommendations for non-alcoholic beverages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Baking must
I love this book! But what else to expect from Dorie Greenspan? Her instructions are always so concise and easy to follow, that it is really impossible to get anything less than the desired result. Plus, it's a beautiful book, with gorgeous pictures. It is a large book, fit for a coffee table, but it's also easy to just place it on a counter and refer to it as you bake. But it's not completely wasted on a coffee table either, as Dorie Greenspan is extremely fun to read with plenty of anecdotes and an impersonal, friendly style.
5-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
Now here's a baker after my own heart - Dorie Greenspan writes, "Some woman collect diamonds, I collect mixing bowls."After achieving a Doctorate in Gerontology some thirty years ago, Greenspan decided that she really wanted to bake - and bake, and bake, and bake - and bake she did - and still does, almost every day.
5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!!
There is no other word for this work of art for all the "little" people of the baking world who don't have restaurant-grade kitchens yet want to bake as if they do!!

Editorial Review

With more than 3,000 entries on every aspect of wine from vine pests to specific grapes, this hefty tome has something for both the seasoned connoisseur and novice alike. Edited by one of today's premier wine columnists, the work covers all aspects of wine, travelling back in time to early Greece to examine wine's role in Dionysian revels, then returning to today's wine centers to explore all aspects of wine appreciation. A full third of the book is dedicated to specific wines and wine-producing regions. All those technical terms you've heard and puzzled over at tastings are clearly explained, making this the perfect reference for newcomers to the world of oenology.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Wine Book.....EVER
This tome is simply the best reference for professionals, amateurs and students on the subject of wine. The 3rd edition is updated with additional entries and new statistics, and better maps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for This Book
I use the Oxford Companion constantly!Wine terms and references can be a bit confusing at times and that's where this book comes in.This book is organized in alphabetical order so if you see a wine related term or word that needs some splain' just refer to The Oxford Companion to Wine.
4-0 out of 5 stars Refer back to it often
If you're into wine, or into learning about it, then this book does well to supplement another perhaps smaller, more specialized book.It doesn't necessarily deal at length with nuances of individual grapes, or how to develop a thorough tasting method. It's very useful when you come across a wine term you won't find in Webster's or want to know what the deal is with grafting, etc.I don't give it a 5 because I think, considering it's namesake and already generous size, they could have gone into more detail on some of the world's lesser-known but up-and-coming varietals at the expense of a few dozen more pages. But still a very good book to have if you want to fill your mind, or just like reading encyclopedias cover to cover. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE
To the person who thought Paula mentioned her ingredients you "had to buy" in these cookbooks...there aren't any.I don't think she even has a food line.I think you may be talking about the fact that she has "the Lady's House Seasoning" in several recipes. The recipe for that is in the cookbook: all it is in salt, pepper and garlic. You don't buy it.As for the cookbook: You know those cookbooks you go to every time you want the most amazing tried and true and incredibly good recipes: for company, for family, for when you KNOW it will be incredible no matter what recipe you try? These are those cookbooks...you will always reach for them first.I happen to own about 100 cookbooks and these are the best ones: We are chefs who own a food lines (Terra Sol and Romeo's) so we are a very picky and food-loving household...and let me tell you, these will be your favorite cookbooks whether you love Southern cooking or just really good food...you can't lose. It's like purchasing that costly pair of shoes that you wear all the time so they are worth it: this will be like your favorite pair yet it's a bargain so it makes it even better!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough, not well proofread
This book is very thorough, and although it seems a bit alarmist, it's apparent that the information he covers could really become necessary in terms of a major disaster. My primary criticism is the in the editing. The author continually uses the word "loose" when he means "lose," for example, and it's an error that's found throughout the book. It makes me cringe when I see it, but when you get past things like that the information is valuable and it's well presented.

3-0 out of 5 stars The best?
I picked up this book after having read it some time ago. Reason is I chanced to read these reviews, and I'm stunned. Best book on the subject, perhaps. However, I've yet to read one book, on the subject, worth the price. Please, do yourself a favor and use the price of this book as partial payment for a Red Cross course. Very much of the content is common sense, and more important, time is valuable - don't waste it on this. ... Read more

Sure, you might lose weight on this diet, but ultimately, your health will decline.Almost everything in here is packed with sugar or preservatives as the suggested ingredients.I actually GAINED weight from this plan!I was only 5 lbs overwight when I started (125 and 5'4") and gained five in about a month and a half.I switched to Ultrametabolism which actually has meat 116.5 (4 lbs. BELOW recommended weight for my height) and I feel fantastic.Buy Ultrametabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman, it contradicts everything (almost) that this book says.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
This is a fabulous cookbook. The recipes are simple and quick. The results are delicious and filling.I eat virtually all of my meals & snacks out of this book, and my energy remains stable throughout the day. I use about 95% of the recipes, which is unprecedented for a cookbook in my home, as my family tends to be picky. This has made dinners much for enjoyable for all of us without compromising my weight.

I am really enjoying this cook book! I love the look of the book - the beautiful photos of the islands, the food and the celebrities! I found that the recipes called for common items easily found in super markets, preparation was not too complicated and of the recipes I have tried so far, the dishes are delicious! I think anyone who loves to cook would thoroughly enjoy this cook book!

3-0 out of 5 stars RESORT FOOD
Although the book was written for a good cause (The Grenada Relief Fund),I have to give it a mediocre review. I when I purchased the book, I thought that it would be authenic Caribbean Food, with a focus on Grenadian recipes. However, this was not the case. Each chapter begins with a story about one of Freeman's "Celebrity" friends and the particular island that they frequent often. The only celebrities that have any familial ties to the Caribbean is Michael Douglas who is Bahamian on his mother's side; and Daisy Fuentes, who is Cuban. All of the celebs, (with the execption of Fuentes, who cooks for herself with help from her family) have professional chefs that make food for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Southern Gentleman" Never Disappoints
We had the pleasure of spending two days with Tyler working on the premier season of his "Tyler's Ultimate" series. It's hard to believe that at that time he was celebrating two things:the upcoming publication of his first cookbook and the installation of his new plasma TV.With the publication of his third book, Tyler continues to bring his simple techniques to the kitchens of the average at-home cook. No, it's not strictly based on the Series, but Tyler's Ultimate carries through on the show's theme with Tyler's unique twists on popular dishes. All of the recipes work great and are easy to follow. It's obvious that everything here has been painstakingly tested, as Tyler says "to the last grain of salt."

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Cookbook from Tyler Florence
This new cookbook is chock full of wonderful comfort foods. Each recipe is accompanied by a gorgeous photo. Tyler's new television show of the same name is a great cooking show with Tyler alone in the kitchen doing what he does best.He takes an ordinary dish and makes it a little something extra special with his own Tyler twist and that goes for all the recipes in the new cookbook. It is billed as being a companion to the TV show.I have made many of Tyler's recipes over the past few years and they always come out a little cut above any one else's recipe in my opinion. If you liked Tyler's first 2 cookbooks then you will love this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars How Disappointing
I have watched all the Tyler shows and was extremely impressed with the new "Tyler's Ultimate" In fact have made almost every recipe on the show. Unfortunately this book was showcased on the the Food Network as a companion to the show. Not so, just a few of the recipes from the show are in the book. Book is nice, but not what I expected. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT COOKBOOK!
I don't know if I could live without this cookbook.I have the Entertaining version as well and love it just as well. We've tried over half of the recipes and there hasn't been one that we didn't like.HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Book That Started a Revolution
With five kids and two working parents, our family depended heavily on convenience foods. We had a slow cooker tucked way back under the cabinets, but it saw use only once or twice a year, usually for a dip or somesuch during the holidays. Our dinners were expensive, low quality and somehow unsatisfying.
