The author enthusiastically shares his passion and experience with grape growing and winemaking
This book is clearly written and easy to read. In addition to the educational aspects, the author effortlessly recounts his own home winemaking experience and shares his passion for it. I found the tables and calculations extremely helpful. A lot of attention is paid to describing the technology and chemistry of the homemade wine. However, the author puts even more emphasis on choosing and correctly growing the right grape at the right place and calls it "your single most important decision". That's why the first chapters on the grape varieties and basic viticulture techniques are especially helpful for beginning grape growers. I truly enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it!
WoW what a book !!!!
I have read a lot about this book so I had to have it. I recently bought a small vineyard in Slovakia and I have tons of local books about winemaking. I am a real newbie and after I read these books I had an idea how to make wine, but that was not enough. I always had tons of questions, which I did not know who to ask. Well Jeff Cox answers them. LOVE this cookbook
Unlike other reviewers, I was unfamiliar with the editors of this cookbook.Bought it because of the cheesecake on the cover!
Best light cookbook ever
I have to admit I am not a fan of "light" cooking or the manymagazines out there; I am also a huge fan of the whole "Cooks Illustrated" books and magazine, so I loved this book. Most low fat and/or low calorie recipes rely on "light" or artifical products to cut calories.This book does not, it adheres to the high standard of Cook's Illustrated recipes. The recipes are not the most low fat or calorie possible, but each is delicious and most importantly works like they say it will. This is also the first oftheir books to provide full nutritional counts.There are the usual detailed explanations of what works and what doesn't so you know exactly why this recipe is going to work.Everything I've tried has been fabulous.

The cookbook I've been waiting for!
So far, I've enjoyed every recipe I've tried in the book. Low-fat blueberry muffins to me taste even better than the original, because they're less greasy. And they're vastly improved from the hockey puck, low-fat muffins I've made in the past. You'll often have to do a little extra work with the recipes -- this is from Cook's Illustrated, after all, not Betty Crocker. Not so "real" or "simple"
I enjoy Real Simple magazine and their other two books. However, this is a little disappointing as a cookbook. It is certainly pretty on my kitchen shelf, with large pictures of each dish and an attractive layout. But the recipes just don't strike me as particularly "real" or "simple". The "No Shop Meals" recipes ALL contain foods that are rarely in my kitchen, even though I cook often, so that defeats the purpose of the chapter and leaves me feeling lied to. I was going to try a scallop chowder recipe, but realized that buying the ingredients (even frozen) was going to cost far more than going out to a nice seafood restaurant.
Best cookbook ever
Granted, I don't sit around reading cookbooks, but this one was the best I've ever picked up.Wonderfully simple yet creative... and the pictures alone could earn it a place on my coffee table.Incredibly modern.Worth the investment.This is how cooking should be.

Great, Easy, Portable , and Fast. to make and eat.
Ok, I can't really cook, and I really don't have time to try either.I've been looking for years for a cookbook with brain dead recipes that is cheap, easy to make, and most important to me, easy to carry.I'm a very busy person and needs to muti-task between work and school. I heard about Bisquick for years but never used it. I bought this book, sight unseen, because I thought it sounded too good to be true on how easy it is, that I would just give it a shot.This is the best book I ever got for realist recipes that I can make.I baked the Cheeseburger Pie, while I was cleaning my apt and doing homework.25 mins in the oven, it came out great. With the leftovers, I reheated it in the microwave and it came out good.This is a great book to give to somebody who can't or has very limited skills cooking or a college student, who has access to a oven or a toaster oven that can bake.If you want to make it a gift theme, give them the book, a pie pan, and a box of Bisquick. I can not wait till have I the chance to try out the other recipes but the best thing is that each recipe comes with a calorie count for each slice.

Essential of Food Safety & Sanitation
I am using your textbook for a class I teach for the Oklahoma City/County Health Department.I Love It!The class I teach is the Food Service Operator's Certification Course that is required by all food service operators in this county. I am a Registered Dietitian who is contracted by Oklahoma State University-OKC and Francis Tuttle to teach the class for the health department. It is kind of a community service offered by the two schools. I have only been teaching the class for three years now, and by far your book is the best. Meets the training needs for Food Handlers
As an instructor who teaches Food Safety classes to front-line employees, I find this text an excellent resource. It is comprehensive yet still easy-to-understand, a difficult combination to achieve for some of the technical aspects of foodborne illness, pathogens, etc. The cartoon-style drawings add to the enjoyment. I have had many trainees who share these positive comments. Only negative comment would be to include color photos instead of the old, grainy B&W. An excellent food safety training resource

This Book Makes Me Want to Drink A Whole Glass of Buttermilk
The Lee Bros. Cookbook is really inspiring--it makes me want to take the day off and go crabbing, mix up a frosty pitcher of mint julips for my friends, or drink a whole glass of buttermilk (like my Grandpa used to do). It makes me--a New Yorker via Southern California--want to go to the South! Right now, this very minute. The recipes are welcoming, homey, conjure images of grandma's kitchen (Grandma was from Chicago but made a mean fried chicken and biscuit). They are also elegant in their simplicity, in their respect for pure, fresh ingredients--and completely unpretentious. The book includes a long, affectionate mediation on grits (a much maligned delicious food): lemon grits, herb grits blue cheese grits!!! It is truly grit-tastic. Vegetarians who love Southern food--take heart--this book loves you: collards, okra,field peas, squash,jerusalem artichokes and ramps! The buttermilk lime dressing and pimento cheese sandwiches are killer. And of course, there is plenty of meat--things like hot-pepper roasted duck and fiery BBQ pork tenderloin, not to mention the classic--fried chicken.

The Lee Bros.' recipes are fantastic, but the writing itself is the real marvel here. I never expect a cookbook to be a good read, but this book's lyrical prose should be savored and the delicious stories should be served again and again. ... Read more

This is a fantastic collection of recipes with excerpts from the books where the recipe is mentioned.If you ever got hungry reading one of Jan Karon's Mitford books, this is a must have for your kitchen.I checked it out of my library and bought it the next day, I loved it so much.

Coolest Cookbook Ever
I've gone through enough cookbooks to confidently say that this book is the best presentation, and tidbits of information about health benefits, nice pictures of select recipies, and yummy, original, simple recipies for your slow cooker.I came back to this site to see if there would be other cookbooks by this publisher.I don't give it five stars, only cause I have to do all the cooking and am bitter.

Wonderful Look at the World
If you enjoy the Material World series, you will love this book.It is a fantastic look at something that we all share, food, and how it can be so different around the world.Like traveling without leaving your couch.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hungry Planet.I loved seeing the photos of each family representing a country on this great planet. It made me think about how much I pay for food during the week,and what my family eats. It also showed that the countries that ate more vegetables and less processed foods seemed to have less diseases and spent less.I also liked to read how members in thefamilies helped each other out with daily chores. I especially found the essay titled, Baked, Boiled, Roasted and Fried interesting. It was about how humans are the only species on Earth that cooks their food and that humans are not carnivores, but cookivores. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading other books by the this author and photographer team.

A winner.
CHRISTMAS WITH SOUTHERN LIVING 2006 (0848731158, $29.95) isn't strictly a cookbook, though recipes are its core: it combines menus and time-saving holiday plans as well as party ideas with dishes which lend to entertainment and family gatherings. Many are fast, easy editor's picks, with chapters handily divided by type of entertainment: brunch buffet, office party, dinner party, and the like. A winner.
Not Up To Snuff
Like many of you, I collect these books year after year.This year was very disappointing.The book really is mainly recipes.I don't buy them for that, although the few I try are good. I buy this book mainly for the decorating and gift ideas.This year the book is really lacking in them.In years past they've shown how to decorate the outside of your house, the mantle, the table, and just about anywhere in a house that you could put a decoration.This year you basically have one mantle.That's it.Sorry, this book had me saying to myself, "I paid full price for this!!"

Not what I was looking for at all.
I admit it, the 12 steps to Raw foods should have given away that this book is just a rehash of 12 steps.

Courage to create change through personal choice
Victoria Boutenko is a revolutionary. Like those who have come before her and those who will follow, it is not an easy path, nor will everyone see the truth in what she espouses. However, it is essential to to read this book (and her others if you wish to have a comprehensive view) to begin to understand how our food choices affect not only our health, but our surroundings as well. I was in a natural food store this morning in Eugene, Oregon and was delighted to see this title as well as many of her others above the shelf in the living food section of the store. 12 Steps is an important piece of the literature that is finally becoming available to the masses, shedding light on how to be healthy, prevent illness, and be a part of the sustainable movement that is necessary if we are to continue to inhabit this earth.

Great Restaurant, Great Recipes
While this is a wonderful establishment and one of the best steakhouses I've ever dined at, the recipes, although fantastic, tend to be a tad on the more 'experienced' side.

One of Wine's Grand Old Men
By Bill Marsano. We can divide wine drinkers into three classes. Ordinaire Joe, who'd rather drink wine than talk about it, is here advised to flee: This book will bore him stupid. The Wine Geek is just the opposite; for him wine is an excuse to prattle about clonal selection and hints of toffee on the nose. He'll love this book--will take it to bed with him. It is a gold mine of tasting notes covering many decades and innumerable wines from most regions of the world. The emphasis is on France, with Germany a distant third (there is no second), Italy a distant fifth (there is no fourth) and everybody else reduced to odds and ends. There's lots of stuff on champagne and port, too--a quintessentially British slant.

His slender volume, Michael Broadbent's Complete Guide to Wine Tasting and Wine Cellars (1982) has long been, like they say about middleweight boxers, pound-for-pound the best book I've ever read about appreciating wine. Throw the other bread books out
Being a skeptic in matters of baking books of by fly by night writers and having been let down in the past, my skepticism hardened me. I was not expecting much in the answer of the perfect bread. The title of perfection does not come easily. Reinhart has mastered the understanding of bread from A-Z.He not only explains methods but the science behind what is actually happening to your creation which can help you self determine the full potential or correct it.
Phenomenal Book
I won't repeat all the praise that's already been lavished on this book here. It's all true. This is a user-friendly way to start baking bread!
I've been a professional artisan baker for a number of years, and I still refer to Reinhart for guidance. His simple, straightforward approach takes the "daunting" out of the daunting world of artisan bread baking.

Mangoes and Curry and so Much More, Oh My!
Mangoes & Curry Leaves is one of my favorite cookbooks and I have scores of Indian cookbooks, as I'm sort of a gourmet chef. I wrote a cooking column for a sailing magazine for a couple years and one of my favorite articles was my "Two Ways to Tandoori" which you can read in one of my "Amazon So You'd Like to Guides," if you want. Tandoori chicken is just delicious. Anyway, while I was making the guide, I listed fifty cookbooks from my collection. I have more. I know, I know, one would think a couple books would be enough, but it's sort of an obsession with me, making food taste great and I just love to see how others have done it.
Beautiful and authentic
I cannot imagine anyone writing anything negative about this book...my family and I come from Bangladesh and India and I have tons of Pakistani friends. The depth that the authors have gone into understanding ingredients and the cooking is remarkable. I cannot imagine how they came to know some of those details. Like my neighbor in PA who had written a negative review, I have also Jaffrey's books which i love but Alford and Duguid got into the very essence of real home cooking of the subcontinent.Other authors sometimes focus on party foods while this book advises the readers on what people really eat on a daily basis. The other travel advice is interesting and the photographs gorgeous although i understand the concerns of the Bethlehem, PA reviewer of pictures that are hard to interpret. Just let it go. They still do an even better job with this book than Hot Sour Salty Sweet. The book is great. I'm glad amazon offers it for a lower price than bookstores.

Good work in a cookbook/travelogue
I am a novice American learning to cook Indian style.I have studied enough books to know that sticking curry powder in a melange of stewing vegetables is not really "getting it" in terms of creating an authentic Indian meal.In my search for authenticity, I think Alford & Duguid go a long way in presenting just that, scouring the villages & cities of India.
