5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I'm not a vegetarian but I found this book a great inspiration. Lots of practical information and clever recipes make this book much better than average. In fact, great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Souper Book. Buy it, esp. if you have no other Madison books
`Vegetable Soups from Deborah Madison's Kitchen' is a title loaded with significance, for a book by the foremost writer on vegetarian cooking techniques, Deborah Madison. The first implication, which reading the book bears out, is that this is all about vegetarian, but not necessarily vegan soup recipes. As in all her books, Ms. Madison makes liberal use of milk products and eggs, with no apologies for that fact. The second implication is that Madison is turning her name, or more exactly `Deborah Madison's Kitchen' into a brand name, in much the same way as Mark Bittman has turned his `How to Cook Everything' and Rachael Ray has turned '30 Minute Meals' into a brand, with the hopes that brand recognition rather than the quality of the book's contents will get you to buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best of the Grand Finales volumes
Of the three plated dessert books that Boyle and Moriarty made together (the other two are Grand Finales: A Neoclassic View of Plated Desserts, and A Modernist View of Plated Desserts), I would say that this one is the best. The pictures here are as gorgeous as always, but the presentations and recipes are much more feasible than the other two. Unlike a lot of the dishes from Modernist View, these ones are actually servable in a restaurant, or at a dinner party. They are not over the top dishes that are just for show. I would give this 4 1/2 stars if I could. The one thing that prevents it from being a 5 star book is the lack of glossary and the constant use of 'non-edible garnishes'. I am not a fan of huge sugar garnishes that no-one is going to eat, or if they do it would break their teeth. Don't get me wrong, they look really pretty, but I believe that everything you put on the plate you should be able to eat. Just difference in styles, I guess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Im a pastry student in Peru and I just can tell all the people that love pastry that this the best book I ever seen and I recommend a lot

5-0 out of 5 stars tough, but fun
A very, very awesome book. You have to be hard core to want this book. It took about 5 hours for me and some friends to make one of the desserts, but we had a blast. It measures everything out with wait, so you don't have to worry if you bought the jumbo eggs when the recipee assumes you are using large. If you like cooking, buy this book. If you don't like cooking, I still say buy this book.Read more

Yes, it's rather pricey, but this is the only book on chocolate confections that you'll ever need to buy. Though the English translation is a little awkward in places, Wybauw communicates the information in a straightforward manner. And the photography is amazing!

This is an amazing book!!!!!!!I love the soups, the variety, the notes and suggestions about making the different classes of soups! My hat is off to the authors.

Soup is the most heart-warming dish to create that soothes the soul and warms the body -- and is also easy to make. This beautifully and fully illustrated new book from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) is great for novice cooks as well as experienced at-home chefs. It begins with an introduction about what you will need from ingredients and equipment to explanations of various consistencies, flavors and seasonings as well as cooking and storing your delectable soups.I enjoy broths and like to create healthy, hearty, soul-warming soups (p. 29).Clear vegetable soup packs a hearty crunch with added carrots, celery and turnips (or add your own favorites). Health advocates will find many exceptional soups, such as tomato and sweet pepper soup (p. 36) or Soto Ayam (Indonesian chicken, noodle and potato soup).Cream soups(p. 99), particularly Cheddar Cheese Soup (not cooked), will be delicious for my cheese lover husband.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Best Soup Book!
I took the advice of the other postings here, and bought this book.My family is DELIGHTED that I did.Every week I make a new soup. The book is easy to read, the recipes are easy to prepare, and the soups are DELICIOUS.I haven't made a bad soup yet. Now, if I could just get this book translated into Spanish for my friends in latin america.....

Television cooking shows are occasionally moderately entertaining to watch, but as sources for usable recipes and good cooking ideas, they are hit or miss at best. Cookbooks based on cooking shows are even less likely to be useful in the kitchen. One shining exception is Julia Child's "Master Chef" series. One of the best cooking shows ever produced, it also yielded some wonderful cookbooks, including Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I love this book.I am a beginer and have alredy tried a couple of recipes in this book. The bagels and the croisans they are both delicious. The book gives you very good explanations on how to make them so you don't have to be an expert.Unfortunatelly I don't own a mixer they are quite expensive so I'll have to wait until Christmas to give myself a gift. The Croissans are supposed to be made with a mixer but I was able to use my food processor instead, it did a good job mixing the dough, and the end result was good.
4-0 out of 5 stars A lovingly written book...with 1 caveat
Baking with Julia is a wonderful book for home cooks who take their cooking seriously. Since the book has several authors, each expert in his/her own area of baking, you get the best of each type of baking. Whether it's artisanal breads, chocolate cake, danish pastries, or fruit tarts, it's all in here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully presented
'Baking with Julia' is just a book that must be owned by all baking-enthusiasts because of its concise directions, it's beautiful pictures, and the satisfaction of sharing the completed products with friends and family. There is something for everyone, and a basis for anyone to build off of. The book covers recipes from the simplest Irish Soda Bread (which is delicious nonetheless) to much more elaborate pastries and breads. What slightly disappointed me upon first opening the book was the presence of a heavy-duty mixture in almost every recipe. I still don't have my mixture, but I have completed many recipes successfully by hand (it's a great workout).

1-0 out of 5 stars Not-So-Real Stews
This book reveals just how precious and convoluted the process of cooking has become for the self-consciously culinarily sophisticated. As a previous reviewer has mentioned, many of its recipes require obscure ingredients or time consuming procedures which when closely examined would appear to have been included for the sake of sheer novelty. Case in point: the author asks the cook in several of the recipes to braid a "rope" from flour and water which is then placed inside the lid of the cooking pot, ostensibly as a seal. After cooking, this "rope" is discarded. Since most well-made casserole dishes or large stewpots include tight-sealing lids, this extra maneuver can only be viewed as the sort of one-upsmanship beloved by upscale cooks with too much time on their hands. Likewise, complex steps such as rendering one's own lard (which the author requires the cook to do in more than one recipe) or tracking down expensive, obscure spices which will in all likelihood be used only once, and then in minute quantity, simply do not justify the time or effort involved. The basic idea of a stew is to create a tasty, satisfying one-pot meal from available ingredients. When it takes weeks to assemble the ingredients and more than a day to prepare the dish, somebody is definitely missing the point.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any cook's shelf
I have owned this book for about a year now, and it's fantastic. The recipes are not instant, but if you have the time and inclination to make wonderful, authentic tasting (vegetarian and non-vegetarian) food, buy this book.My particular favorites are the chicken and sweet potato curry, spinach bouillibaise, and the full-length traditional bouillabaise. However, I have never made a recipe from this book that I didn't like. After buying loads of seasonal vegetables at the farmer's market - this book is one of my first stops in finding ways to use the vegetables. I'm buying a copy today for my brother; I'm sure he'll love it.I'm also looking forward to using Mr. Wright's Meditaranean cookbook which I'm buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ULTIMATE COMFORT FOOD BOOK--THE WRIGHT STUFF
This book, like all of Clifford Wright's books, is a pleasure and a treasure. The man is a genius. Most of the recipes are extremely easy and extremely delicious, like the Hungarian Smoked Sausage and Prune Stew, which has a total of 4 ingredients, including water (a garnish/enrichment adds 2 more). Wright makes the recipes easy by giving authentic ingredients but including substitutes that you can find in any market. For example, he says to use a prosciutto bone or a ham bone; goat milk or cow milk plus cream, etc. Many of the stews have only 3 or 4 ingredients after water and salt and pepper; many include ingredients that are just throw-ins that require no preparation, like olives, capers, tomato paste, nuts, or raisins. The more adventurous cook can try recipes that include things like preserved lemons--Wright tells you how to make them. He also makes the book idiot-proof with the organization: "Stews With Beef," "Stews With Pork," "Stews With Vegetables"--you get the idea. If you don't like some of the ingredients, you can substitute what you do like. You can't go wrong with Wright. ... Read more

I just bought this book and made a recipe right away. I tried theGolden Cake with Fudge Frosting. The cake and the frosting were delicious. Absolute rubbish. Who publishes a cookbook without pictures. Ok. There are about a dozen pictures, but even so. 400 recipes and no pictures beside them. You eat with your eyes first. What a waste of 45 dollars. The author is a thief.

This 600+ page tome has a wonderful cosmopolitan approach and organisation to it's wonderful recipes for appetizers from around the world. The background information is very helpful and educational. The ingredients are generally readily available, prep time is reasonable, and instructions are clearly written. Although not necessary, I wouldn't mind if it had more photos in the book or on a website, as some of the appetizersare such appetizing eye candy!

Editorial Review

Miniature houses have an undeniable appeal, especially when they're made out of food. But the architectural achievements in this guide are so charming and sometimes so elaborate that it's hard to imagine actually eating them; they're meant to be admired, not devoured. From rustic to royal, humble to ornate, this eclectic assortment ranges from cooking-school complex to child-simple. Some were even designed by kids and could certainly be constructed by them. (Just be sure to buy extra trimmings, since the budding architects are bound to do some nibbling!)Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I'll keep it but only as a supplement to better books
This book has pictures of some really cool ideas, and pictures of some less-cool ideas. It also has several basic recipes and some general building information, but it isn't very detailed. Most frustrating are the pictures of houses that have only one or two pictures and little or no information about some of the most interesting design details!
2-0 out of 5 stars Really disappointing
If you are seeking the inside secrets to gingerbread artistry, don't expect much from this book. This book doesn't even begin to cover the many gingerbread/food techniques currently available -- and that home builders can use -- which mimic real-life or fantasy -- building structures and contents.I thought that many of the instructions shown were too simple and general -- the reader deserved to read more details, more inside information on how to work with food items to create effects -- especially since the author is a pastry chef! The book's description also promises photos of the Grove Park Inn's gingerbread competition entries. But if you expect to see the competition's top of the line entries featuring incredible details, don't. I looked forward to receiving this book.I'm sorry I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I cannot tell you how much I loved this book!!!!!
I made silky smooth Creme' Brulee from this book before I even set foot in Culinary School. I also made the cream puffs, and the pastry cream (which in general is tricky to make) like a pro.
5-0 out of 5 stars Baking demystified
I love this book.I'd considered myself an intermediate baker, and it makes a world of difference to understand the science of baking. The chapter on ganache alone is worth the price of the book several times over.It has opened up the doors for me in terms of being able to create my own recipes and variations. An important facet of this book also is Sherry Yard's style.Noticably absent is the air of condescention some authors adopt when deigning to speak with the amateur baker. Her comment at the end of the explanation of simple syrup:"See why they call it simple"?
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST!
If you're an avid baker this book is one of the best out there!I purchased this book on impulse on my way to the cashier out of the bookstore. The night before I was watching a re-run of Wolfgang Puck and Sherry Yard helped him out Wolfgang Puck saying that Sherry won the James Beard award which is like the Oscars in the Pastry world.Boy was I so lucky its one of he best impulse buy I ever did! :)

This book gives me something to work up to. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease about a year ago and all the cookbooks I've used so far haven't been very good. So, needless to say, I was skeptical of this book that was getting rave reviews.I must say, this is by far the best gluten-free cookbook I've used.I've baked pumpkin muffins, pumpkin bread, a pizza and a birthday cake and all were wonderful.I'm not sure what Annalise does differently, but the breads are fluffy and rise just like wheat-based breads.I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars And you thought Bisquick was only for pancakes....
I remember as a kid, always having a box of Bisquick on the kitchen shelf. It was a staple in the kitchen. From pancakes to biscuits it was always used. And for variety they had different recipes on the box. My favorite being the Impossible Cheeseburger Pie. It was always a treat to have it for dinner. So when I saw that there was a Bisquick cookbook I had to have it. And I am glad I picked it up. Not only are there the traditional recipes for pancakes, biscuits and waffles, that have been on the box for years, but there also many different recipes that work for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even desert. There are some great color photos to go along with each recipe and they have also included old Bisquick advertisements from over the years which are very nostalgic. This is a great cookbook to have around the house, especially when you are looking for something quick to whip up. ... Read more

I am eternally grateful that Fox's definition of morning food includes black bean chili, blintzes, quesadillas and coffee cake! I'm not a morning person, but I love Morning Food.
