5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely charming!!
You know how you wonder if a book is as good on the inside as it looks on the outside? The old cliche of "don't judge a book......"? Well, go ahead and judge this book because the cover is definitely a peek into what is on the inside!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best cake decorating book I've ever seen
I have a vast array of cake decorating books in my collection and I've never come across one that I liked anywhere near as much as this book. With such a beautiful cover, I assumed that this would be the highlight of the book and then there would be a few other nice ones that I might try as well.I was not prepared to want to try about 90% of the ideas in this book.In fact, there are about 10 in here that could have easily been the cover recipe. The Romantic Rose Tower (although VERY intimidating) has got to be the most beautiful and original cake I've ever seen.I highly recommend this book - if just for the artwork!I can't wait to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really can't believe there's no dairy
I have waited a long time for this new book by my favorite vegan baking author but this book is even more than I expected. The coconut cake is sooo good, the new muffins delic, the new advice on using dry sweeteners makes it easier (and less expensive ) to bake healthy. If I lived in nyc, I'd be taking her classes for sure, but for now, I am making the recipes and happy. Tell all your friends about this book, not only the dairy frees.
5-0 out of 5 stars wow

I love to bake and I could never thought thatsomething that has no eggs or dairy cantaste sooooo good . The recepies are easy to follow , dont take too much timeand once again tastegood , just yesterday i made Hot Fudge Sunday Cakeand it was lovely
4-0 out of 5 stars You'll never believe this desserts are vegan!
This book is completely vegan and most recipes contain some whole grain ingredients and less refined sweeteners.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
This book is a nostagic look at ice cream manufacturing and store operation. We have opened 30 plus ice cream stores over the last 25 years and would not recommend anyone using this book as a reference. This guy enjoys making ice cream and spinning a good yarn but in the real world of ice cream store operation his ideas are outdated and seriously flawed. Ice cream shops work in only a few areas of this country and require hard work and long hours. They fail at an alarming rate and rarely gross enough to make a decent living. If you are planning on an ice cream store operation make sure you do a decent demographical study before attempting it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book was an interesting guide to ice cream. It has helped me gain an insight in how to make and distribute ice cream. It answered most of my questions and helped me decide my next course of action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for ice cream professionals
Working as a dairy technician in a medium sized ice-cream-factory, I needed something to expand my knowledge on the subject. Thats why I bought this book. And I was amazed: Ice Cream and Frozen Desserts: A Commercial Guide to Production and Marketing really met my expectations and did a lot more. Its well written, easily accessible and thorough. A must buy for both ice-cream-professionals and enthusiasts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My first try was delicious but disappointing.
As an experienced baker, I looked forward to making my first recipe from this book. What I chose was New York Black and Whites. The recipe said it made 9 cookies.Following the directions to the letter, the recipe made 15 cookies instead.Maybe this was simply a typo, but I would think an editor would have caught it.The baking time was correct and the cookies are delicious; however, the author states there will be 3 tablespoons chocolate glaze leftover. After generously glazing half of each cookie, I measured the leftover chocolate glaze and it measured 2/3 cup!So this was not worked out.The vanilla glaze was also not worked out, as with the 3 tablespoons of water called for, the icing was much too thin, and I had to add more sugar. When one buys cookbooks one expects them to contain recipes that have already been worked out.I can only hope the other recipes are worked out better.BUT--the finished cookies are delicious, and that is what counts.I would recommend this book to experienced bakers so that you'll know how to compensate for any errors in it.In this particular book, I cannot find any information on the recommended method for measuring flour, since no two books are the same. And some more information on where to purchase the recommended cookie sheets would be helpful for some readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cookie Book in My collection,
I refer to this book constantly. The recipes are easy, ingrediants easly found arond the house (a huge plus), and despite rather simple ingrediahts the resutls are delicious. Each of my family has a different favorite, so they keep me hoppingn but their appreciaton is worth it.Besides, who wants a hard bite sized cookhyou can have these gynormous soft, delicious delecacies.I haven't made every recipe in the book, but plan to.Every cookie so far has met with rave comments from school bake sales, to church socials, and to (okay, I admit it) just when I want to make a huge batch of delicious chocolate filled cookies all for meysef.I plan to buy 8 more marketplace copies today since they are cheap.I'll give them as gifts and my own copy is dog-eared from use so I can finally replaceMy thanks to the authors for creating easy cookis from recipes easily found around the house that are so very delicious and easy to make, even for a novie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its name!
Every cookie I've made from this book has been incredibly yummy and gotten rave reviews.I have only two complaints that caused me to give 4 stars rather than 5.First, though the pictures are very good, not every cookie is shown -- and I like to have some idea of what they're supposed to look like, especially with unfamiliar recipes. And second, some of the cookies are supposed to be like sandwiches -- two cookies with a filling between -- and these are not nearly so easy to achieve as the book seems to imply. It's really hard (at least for me!) to get two cookies to be exactly the same size and shape! However, those two small things aside, the recipes are excellent, and the book also has a couple things many cookbooks don't, such as summaries of prep and cooking time at the bottom of each page, and storage instructions for every recipe. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unique and creative!
I'm a professional baker and have purchased many cake decorating books, including nearly all of Colette's books.I absolutely loved this book!I like the way photos instead of drawn illustrations are used for the "how to" part of each cake. She shows you step by step, how to makeher unique cakes. And yes, there are some slight imperfections...it's a cake for cryin' out Larry. Her photos are great. They are real! Not airbrushed photos. If you go to a wedding, look at the cake...really look, there are always little flaws. They are covered with flowers or facing the back of the room.Kate makes cakes that are actually feasable...and cost effective. I've taken classes with some famous cake makers and their techniques although informative, are quite laborous and time consuming.I don't have that kind of time. Simple techniques, elegant, unique design. Very inspirational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love It!
I saw Kate Sullivan on the Food Network and had to buy this book.I'm just getting into cake decorating and this book gave me some good tips and new ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Controversial Sampler
This is the book that has split the community of cake decorators right down the middle, from stem to stern.Half of us think that Sullivan's craft, while passionate and inspiring, shows signs of sloppy, careless finish, while the other half holds her up as the exemplar of a new kind of fun styling that hasn't been seen in decades.I decided to make up my mind by ordering two copies of her book, one to give to my mother, one to keep for myself. We challenged each other to find the best and worst recipes and tips in Sullivan's opus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't say enough wonderful things about this book!
My dream is to one day own a small bakery in my community. I have read several books on the business, and on baking itself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow...great for novice and up
I have been buying up a storm on instructional cooking books lately and I figured this one would be a great way to get my feet wet in the realm of baking, which is an area that I have ignored for awhile.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great tips
I have been baking for few years now and even though my cakes turn really well, I was not aware of all those small tips that make baking more convenient and efficient. Tempering eggs, making custard( finally with pictures!!) or even kneading yeast dough to make it strong and elastic - all you can find it here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for amateurs!!!!
I bought the low fat from Medrich first and those recipes already gave me a shock to their level of difficulty.Unless you have years of experience or specially trained, don't waste your time and effort, because it won't turn out.I don't know how many times I've tried to make the safe meringue but only ending up with scrambled egg whites.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
I saw this book after looking at three of the author's other books (A Year in Chocolate, Bittersweet, and Cookie/Bars). Surprising, I found my experience with this one to be a bit deflated. It does have beautiful photographs for just about all of the desserts and this is very much appreciated. However, I have seen much of these same recipes in Bittersweet, so this book was a bit of a let-down. I was also annoyed by the author's descriptions of her life experiences in this first book...somehow she appeared self-absorbed, and this was evident even in her last book, Bittersweet- so apparently this might suggest a pattern.3-0 out of 5 stars Eye pleasing, written for professional chefs
This is an interesting book with lots of beautiful pictures of chocolate desserts.Looking at the pictures and reading the ingredient lists should make your mouth beg for a piece of the masterpiece that you are seeing. However, be warned - those who are just learning to make desserts or who those have some skills already (like myself)of making desserts- this book is not for you.First for all you HAVE to have a patient to read the recipe carefully. Since most of the desserts in this book have several components and each of those components needs to be assembled separately (has its recipe of its own - thankfully listed at the end of the book as a separate chapter - "Building Blocks ..."). Second, you will need lots of time and lots of space in refrigerator and freezer as you proceed with your masterpiece. However, all said, the desserts I believe will be heavenly once they will be on a plate, in front of you. Check out your local libraries for a copy of this book before you buy. ... Read more

I HAVE BEEN SOMERSIZING FOR ABOUT 5 WEEKS AND HAVE ENJOYED THE FOOD RECIPES IN SUZANNE SOMERS 3 BOOKS, SO I THOUGHT I WOULD TRY THIS DESSERT BOOK.SO FAR I HAVE LOST 10 LBS AND AM LOVING THE RESULTS WITHOUT STARVING MYSELF.HER PROGRAM IS TRUELY A WAY TO LIVE BY.YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PURCHASE HER PRODUCTS, BECAUSE SHE GIVES YOU MOST OF THE RECIPES IN HER BOOKS, I LIKE THAT!THIS DESSERT BOOK DID FALL SHORT THOUGH COMPARED TO THE OTHER WONDERFUL BOOKS.I HAVE TRIED THE CHEESECAKE WHICH IS OK, BUT WHEN YOUR EARLY ON HAVING THE SUGAR CRAVINGS IT LEAVES SOMETHING TO BE DESIRED, I SUFFERD THROUGH.WE ALSO TRIED THE ICE CREAM AND THE PREVIOUS REVIEW IS EXACTLY RIGHT, THE SOMERSWEET MAKES THE ICE CREAM HARD AS A ROCK, IT WASNT VERY GOOD.I HAVE YET TO TRY ANY OTHER RECIPES.THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY LOOK MORE LIKE THE DESSERTS I AM USED TO ARE ON LEVEL 2, SO I GUESS WE JUST HAVE TO SUFFER THROUGH.I HAVE MADE A GOOD MOUSSE DESSERT USING SUGAR FREE CHOC PUDDING AND CREAM, BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE AN ALMOST LEVEL ONE.I PERSONALLY WOULDNT WASTE THE $ ON THIS BOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great with a little help.
I have tried a couple of desserts and they worked great. I used Splenda as sweetner with no problem. I also substituted lower fat dairy products. I love this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who know what they want!
This book is great for those who know what they want, that is, desserts that fit into their Somersizing way of eating, as well as a love for baking. If you have given up sugar and are no longer craving the sickening sweet things you previously ate, then these recipes are perfect. The creme brulee is rich and creamy and just sweet enough. After all, aren't we supposed to be adjusting to a healthier lifestyle? If what you want is a rich ice cream sundae that makes your teeth ache, then this book isn't for you.But if you have given up sweets, and find the sweetness of natural fruit to be sweet enough and have a love of baking and cooking, then these recipes will do the trick. My family loved them, too. ... I'm only writing this review to let you know the actual outcome of one of the recipes.I fell in love with Gifts In A Jar because they make great unique gifts.I made 4 jars today to give to teachers.Because this was my first time giving the gift to others I thought I'd try the recipe to taste what they would be making. They were VERY dry.Have one with a big glass of milk. The jars themselves came out very cute but I wished I had tasted the recipe before I decided to do them.I am a little disappointed.Just thought you'd like to know too.Try the recipe first and then decide if you want others to think this is your culinary best.I wish I had time to get another gift.Oh well. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Wedding Cake
As an experienced cake decorator looking for new ideas, I was not impressed with this book. The examples were a bit staid. I would not even recommend it for new bakers since there are no explicit guidelines for making the decorations, constructing the cakes, etc. I would recommend The Well Decorated Cake by Toba Garrett. The instructions are simple and easy to follow even for the novice. And the recipes are wonderful. I have tested almost every one and had great results the first time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
Sadly, I was extremely underwhelmed by this book.It is just a collection of some above-average cake decorating. There are no instructions on how to make the sugar paste flowers or decorations.A better book would be Margaret Braun's Cakewalk. This book, however, is great for beginners or clueless brides. For us pastry folks, I recommend you pass on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best!
Fantastic cookbook! There are over 300 recipes in this volume and you'll want to try all of them. The 30 page "Getting Started" section is invaluable and has many useful illustrations and handy tips. Ditto on the "Ingredients" section in the back of the book - although that section would have been better placed in the front.A nice plus is the wipe-clean cover underneath the dust jacket. The recipe titles and text fonts are easy to read and the overall design of the book is logical and practical to use. While the book is large, it's not heavy owing to the choice of paper.Save the wrist-breaking heavy glossy enamel stock for the coffee table books!

I attended an event at our local bookstore, which hosted one of the editors of this book from King Arthur.I thought the session would be fun, but was determined that I was not going to buy another book with cookie recipes. That was until the editor let us sample several cookies from the book, including Magic in the Middle (chocolate filled with peanut butter), and Salty Oatmeal (the best oatmeal cookie I have ever eaten in my life, although others may find the slightly salty taste a bit odd). After biting into these, I immediately bought three copies, one for myself and two for holiday gifts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what it seems
The cover of this book excited me, but when I received it, the decorations and ideas were very basic and child-like. It was disappointing as the cover gave an indication of exactly what I was looking for, but the insides failed to ignite! Good recipes for frosting etc, but unfortunately not as good as it looked!

2-0 out of 5 stars dissapointed
I thought this book would have some really nice looking ideas and info.It is a "cute" book more for beginners... I wasn't happy with the substance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely and educational book
If you are used to putting evaporated milk and strawberry jam into your ice cream maker to get a quick batch of ice cream, this isn't the book for you. This book neccesitiates time to prepare the ingredients.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Think I'll Miss Ice Cream
This book has really helped me - a devout ice cream eater, now born-again vegan.I have made four recipes in two weeks and this book gives me hope that milk, cream, butter, eggs, and sugar will never enter my diet again.Although it is hard for me to find honey dates (used in many of the recipes), the medjool dates has been a great substitute.Thank you Mr. Jeff Rogers.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
This is incredible! As a vegan looking for an alternative to dairy AND an alternative to soy ice cream I've finally found something that meets taste and texture standards. I made my first recipe tonight, choclate (and towards the end I threw in a little peanut butter to get some ripples) and I am floored.

Editorial Review

Rich and silky, fresh foie gras is one of the world's great foods. But until the mid-80s, due to importation restrictions and without domestic production, none was available here. Michael A. Ginor, proprietor of Hudson Valley Foie Gras, was among the first to establish production of domestic duck foie gras, which excited the livers' current popularity.Read more

Chill your bottle of sauterne!Your mouth will be watering - makes abeautiful coffee table book or great hostess gift for a "foodie".

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop being ridiculous
This is not a forum for open discussion about the method of making Foie. This review section is about a book and how well it was written and the information you get from it.This is a great book about the preparation of Foie and some really nice pictures as well.I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in Foie.

1-0 out of 5 stars interesting...why the love?
You have to be a very shallow and uneducated person to eat a product which causes such cruelty to a living thing.I am not an extremist....just a person with a warm heart and head on my shoulders.Common sense people...many other foods out there who do you think you are creating a demand for such a cruel product? ... I've made most of the recipes in this book and they're all pretty good. The friendship soup is the best.I love the whole idea.

3-0 out of 5 stars check the ingredients!
This is a great book idea, but look at the ingredients before shopping - lots of non-homemade seasonings/flavorings in the recipes that could easily be adapted to include more homemade ingredients.Use your own creativity to adapt the recipes and you'll have a real winner!

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good recipes, few recipes in book
I have most of the books in this series. My parents are aging and I have been looking for items that I can make for them which will have a long shelf life and would require them to do minimal food preparation, yet still have a 'home cooked meal'.The recipes fit the bill for the most part.In each book I found that there were a few recipes that are great and some I wouldn't try at all. This is what I usually find in any cookbook.I would comment that each book only has about 25 or so recipes in it.The rest of the pages consist of 6 copies each of pre-made instruction cards to enclose with each food package. I did feel disappointed in the number of recipes for the cost of the book ... Read more

Editorial Review

Although the wedding cake is usually one of the last details engaged couples settle on before the big day, it's just as important for setting the tone and style of the celebration as the flowers or the invitations. An elegant, towering Croquembouche studded with golden almonds and wrapped in clouds of spun sugar sends a different message than a rich-looking Gianduja Truffle Cake decorated with fresh fruit and dusted with gold powder or a White Chocolate Satin Apricot Cake adorned with flowers (click to see photos). Chef Dede Wilson believes that wedding cakes should be aesthetically pleasing, but above all should "reflect the tastes, beliefs, and desires of the bridal couple." With the aim of creating cakes that taste as good as they look, Wilson lends her expertise and creative spirit to the marvelous constructions in Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The Wedding Cake Book by Dede Wilson
I thought this book with very average... It just seemed to be the some kind of work though out the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars It was NOT what I had expected at all!
I had expected to see more ideas for wedding cakes and these were NOT something people in my circle would make or eat! When writing a book like this, ALL types of readers should be considered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best recipes with mixing amounts included for differing pan sizes!
I just made a wedding cake for my cousin's wedding and this book was clearly the best as far as giving practical advice, explaining how to fix problems (for example, what to do if you are making Italian meringue frosting and the egg whites are whipped before the sugar syrup is up to temperature or vise versa so each recipe comes out perfectly!), and including such a wonderful array of gourmet recipes including how to make marzipan (which is so easy!using just corn syrup and almond paste which can be shaped like clay for edible decorations and then I hand tinted/painted mine using paste icing color) and chocolate plastic (simply white chocolate and corn syrup which can be molded or cut out with cookie cutters). The book has lovely photographs with the recipes and directions immediately following each photo, or, if you're like me, you can pick and choose what ideas you like and augment to your heart's content!I had fun making a pound cake with raspberry mousse filling, Italian meringue buttercream frosting (so smooth and not as sweet as the usual confectioners sugar frostings and it tastes like whipped cream), and decorations out of marzipan and chocolate plastic in the shapes of grapes, acorns, leaves, and roses for the woodland theme wedding. The advantage of marzipan is that it can make very large decorations with little fear that it will collapse.I adore this book and have Dede Wilson's other book as well and hope she'll put out more! ...
