5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely more than 15 minutes
I am not too thrilled with this cookbook. Many of the ingredients are not items that you would have readily available in your cabinets or refrigerator. Also, it seems like the preparation and cooking of these recipes would definitely take more than 15 minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutritous and easy!
My family loves food, we are the farmers market type of shoppers, picking up heirloom carrots, tomoatoes, and raw garbanzo beans. With this in mind, we LOVE this little book.We learned a lot about different sources of quality nutrition for our son (who is now 13 months). Although, we don't use the book a lot anymore, it was a good starting point for finding high quality, nutritious ingredients for little meals. There are some recipes that call for nuts, so we just skipped those until my son was one.No big deal.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very little help or direction
I was very excited to start feeding my son solids.I bought this book and Super Baby Food. This book is NO comparison to the Super Baby Food book. This book would be a great 3rd or 4th addition to your baby food cookbooks but not a very good starter book.It doesn't explain anything in detail.Compared to the Super Baby Food Book this book is awful. If you want detail and direction for feeding your baby, this is not the book to buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment
This book goes against everything my pediatrician and allergist recommend as far as introducing nuts to a child's diet.Half of the recipes call for nuts of some type for babies from ten months on.Everything I have heard from the Dr's or read says to wait at least one year and until two or three years if you have a family history of nut allergies.Very disappointed in this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased...
I was very worried about making bread, but Bette's Four Flour Bread was so easy and tasked great..I was very pleased.. I can't wait to try another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking at Bread in a Whole New Way!
This book makes it easy to have a new relationship with baked goods.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have not even read this and I know it's good
I have her first book (fabulous, I have already worn it out!). I don't own this one - yet. However, I have been baking bread for months in my bread machine using a recipe (adapted for my machine) from this book (the gluten-free white bread - can anyone tell me how many calories this has???). I am so thankful that I can still eat pizza and other treats I would miss so much, and it's all thanks to Bette. These breads may be too sweet, but that is relative. Use applesauce instead, or some other liquid replacement. Get creative. Learn to be a daring cook. As for these ingredients being too expensive: I don't buy it (especially not if it's too expensive!). You do have to be ingenuous and tenacious, but you can find local ethnic markets that carry these for much, much less than the distributors she is touting. Garfava flour can probably be found at an Indian market for dollars less per pound. Rice flour, tapioca starch, and potato starch are available at any Asian market for about 50 cents a pound. That's about $2 less per pound than the brand name flours at the health food store!!! See what I mean? This is a piece of cake. A gluten-free piece of cake. Bon appetit!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book even if you are not pregnant!
This book is a gem not only for its balanced nutritional information, but just as a GREAT cookbook. Have you ever had a cookbook where you can just pick it up and EVERYTHING you make is fabulous? Well, this is the one. Recipies are easy to make and quick for busy people. The salmon with papaya salsa is out of this world! Whenever I make something outstanding, I always say to my husband, "Guess what cookbook this came out of?" This book has made preparing for pregnancy a culinary delight! Thanks Jones and Hudson!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great nutritional info.
I love this book! I am trying to conceive and I bought it so I could start eating right. I am a healthy eater anyway, but the book offers useful info. about why you need certain nutrients and how much more of each vitamin and mineral as well as how many more calories you should be eating. There are also many good recipes. I have made only 2 so far but both were yummy. I highly recommend this book to anyone pregnant or looking to start trying to conceive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely rounded for your growing belly, growing family
As another reviewer stated, you do not have to be pregnant to reap in the wonderful results of this perfect cookbook.Lots of amazing recipes and chock full of priceless information on the nutrients we need, which foods have them and how to cook them to perfection.I have already lent this book to a friend who is pregnant, and can't wait to get it back.I plan to use this book for any future pregnancies as well as a lifestyle cookery catalyst. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite
This cookbook is INCREDIBLE!I got it for my birthday 10 years ago and have tried at least half of the recipes in it -- and my copy is battered enough to prove it.I especially recommend the Tapenade, Turkish Spinach & Lentil Soup, Sayra's Greens, Pasta e Fagioli, Pepperpot Soup, Mocha Pecan Pie, Galletas de Nueces, Polvorones de Canela, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Pulla, Ukrainian Almond Crescents (OK, so I have a sweet tooth). The best gift I've ever gotten!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Cookbook for Beginning Cooks
I purchased this cookbook about 15 years ago - - a little while before I moved out on my own.I purchased "The Joy of Cooking" and "The Silver Palate" at the same time. This is an excellent cookbook.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really great book!
I've used this book so many times that the binding is cracked. There are post-it notes sticking up from too many pages to count. And the book automatically opens to my favorite recipe, Pasta e Fagioli. It is my idea of the ultimate comfort food, and I cannot count how many times we've enjoyed it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Candidiasis ad infinitum
Of the large numbers of books on this subject, this one offered little new information.I did see a few recipes that appealed, but could have easily skipped this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Candidia Albican Yeast-Free Cookbook, The: How Good Nutrition Can Help Fight the Epidemic of Yeast-Related Diseases
This book has helped answer many of my questions regarding Candida and has explained what I can expect as I go through the healing process. It is very informative in relation to diet and has good recipes to make the plain food we have to eat a little more exciting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Candida Recipes
I thought this book was very helpful. What I liked most was the "rainbow meal plan" which listed the vegetables and meat combinations you could have on this diet at every meal.Because there are so many vegetables/meat combinations to choose from you shouldn't get bored. The plan also recommends steaming for all your food so it's easy to prepare - all you need is water, a pot and a steamer. The downside is you do have to chop a lot of veggies - however, it's worth it! I also had a hard time with another recipe which called for "Homemade Potassium Baking Powder" pg.83. In the recipe the book says to use potassium bicarbonate which can be ordered from a pharmacy. However, when I went to pick up my bicarbonate it had a skull and cross bone on the bottle and was rated somewhat toxic. When I talked to the pharmacist he said I needed to know what percentage of the potassium bicarbonate was called for because potassium bicarbonate is a strong base.Anyway I had no way to get that information so I skipped that recipe. So obviously the book should be more detailed about things like that.Yet even with this snaffoo I thought the book was helpful and still use most recipes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Absolute must have book for the new Vegan!
If you are new to Veganism, you are probably missing the familiar flavors of cheese. Although you cannot copy the flavor exactly, the book has many tasty recipes so that you can keep enjoying your old favorites while making a difference for your health and the rest of the planet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing!
The hardest part of becoming vegan for me was giving up cheese. This book literally saved my life (and the lives of countless animals!). The recipes are interesting and inventive, and while they don't taste, look, or behave exactly like cheese, they still have an uncanny resemblance and flavor that truly satisfies. Some of my favorites: Crock Cheez, Gee Whiz Spread, Port Wine Uncheese, Broccoli Pesto Pasta, Cheez Please Soup, Zucchini Chedda Soup, Philly Potato Chowder, Besto Pesto, Tofu Pate, Stuffed Shells, Chickpea Flour Pizza, French Bread Pizza, Cheez-A-Roni, and Tetrazzini. And I don't know what I would do without simple, convenient, inexpensive, and healthful staples like Parmezano Sprinkles (a Parmesan cheese alternative), which I use on almost everything, and Instant Cheez-It (a dry mix for cheesy sauces on-the-fly). People who don't like this book clearly haven't explored it fully. As with any cookbook, there are some recipes I like more than others, but there is so much to love here that you are sure to find your "cheese tooth" satisfied!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Cookbook I Was Always Waiting For!
This cookbook is pure magic!Who would have thought you could combine a few simple ingredients and end up with the most sumptuous sauces, delicious dips, and enticing entrees without using one ounce of dairy? Not to mention the block cheezes which work so well in a sandwich or sliced onto crackers. What amazing alchemy is at work here?I came across Ms. Stepaniak's first uncheese cookbook (The Uncheese Cookbook) several years ago when my then teenage daughter decided to become vegan.I really needed some ideas for food that was familiar, yet vegan, and also delicious, and hopefully healthy."The Uncheese Cookbook" satisfied all these requirements, and then some.I was simply amazed at the delicious recipes and the overwhelmingly positive responses from my family.Needless to say, this book soon became a much loved and much used treasure.I actually ordered a spare copy as I was worried I would wear out the first!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple is as simple does
Nothing fancy here, but if you need a few quick slow-cooker recipes always on hand, well, here you go. I especially like the stuffed peppers. I found this did the trick as far as comfort food that reminded me of my dear old mum.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a happy buyer
I've made 2 of the recipes so far and am reluctant to try more. If I had known what I now know BEFORE I bought the book, I'd never have bought it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Unimpressive
As a vegan for almost 10 years, and someone who loves to cook, I am constantly searching for new cookbooks. While the recipes in this book were easy to follow, the few that I tried did not taste very good.I tried four of the recipes, being faithful to the instructions. The recipes seemed to rely on an overdose of spices.I was not impressed.Simple, yes.Tasty, no. ... I kind of had my doubts about this book. My boyfriend and I have occasionally stopped by her show on PBS to mock her husband's guitar playing. Next time we might restrain ourselves - all the recipes we've tried from this book have been wonderful!

4-0 out of 5 stars Use the philsophy of this book every day but most of the recipes only a few times a week.
I just discovered this book and was really excited to read it. I must say that overall I wasn't disappointed. Her explanations on how we impact our bodies and the earth by the choices we make in food and even in the products we use is truly convincing. Her enthusiasm for food is contageous. The fact that she discusses various eating plans and the philosophy behind each is really wonderful. The amount of good information presented is amazing. That said, I was a little confused about the recipes. I am of Italian heritage so I was raised on olive oil, beans, nuts, grains, etc and continue to make them my basic food choices. But just because nuts and good quality oils have health benefits doesn't mean you can use them with wild abandon. Some of the recipes in this book have way too much fat per serving. Unless you're extremely active I truly can't imagine using most of these recipes on a regular basis and being able to control your weight. For example, there is a recipe for "Massaged Greens". This veg side dish has 11 grams of fat per serving (and only 150 calories). As someone who eats alot of greens, I can say first hand that a drizzle of good quality oil is all that you really need to season greens, anything more and you drown out their flavor. The "Walnut Oatmeal Raisin Cookies" are 400 calories and 21 grams of fat per cookie! To be fair, not all of the recipes are high in fat but the majority are. The other odd thing about many of these recipes are the copius amounts of sodium. Soy sauce (shoyu) seems to be the culprit here. The "Soba Noodle Salad" and the "Soba Noodle Soup" have 3,130 mg and 3,390 mg of sodium per serving respectively. And the above mentioned"Massaged Greens": 960 mg. of sodium per serving. Alot of recipes have 600 mg or higher (although not all recipes are high in sodium). So, I was baffled that Dean Ornish would write the Forward. Unless he's loosened his militant stance on the "proper" way to eat for health, he seemed like the last person who would herald most of the recipes in this tome.So maybe one should use the philosophy of this book every single day but the recipes only a few times a week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tips & Ideas On Safely Eating Out With Gluten/Food Allergies!
This book has been very helpful as a mom of a 2 yr old food allergy child. When my daughter was diagnosed with a couple of severe food allergies and many sensitivies, we had not dined out for a while. This book has helped to truly understand what to look out for and how to manage the eating out process. It's easy to use and I was impressed by the tips and knowledge relating to dealing with the specific top 10 allergens when dining out.Not only does it deal with the 10 allergens but relates them to each of the 7 cuisines such as Indian, American Steak and Seafood, French, etc. giving helpful tips on how allergens may be "hidden" or used in preparation that you would never expect. The book helps you to identify these items and communicate effectively with the restaurant staff. In addition, there is also useful information on safely choosing snacks when you are out, travel, etc.The book has helped me gain confidence in dining out as a family again. The book is a great read for those with celiac, food allergies or even parents of children with food allergies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease about a year ago and all the cookbooks I've used so far haven't been very good. So, needless to say, I was skeptical of this book that was getting rave reviews.I must say, this is by far the best gluten-free cookbook I've used.I've baked pumpkin muffins, pumpkin bread, a pizza and a birthday cake and all were wonderful.I'm not sure what Annalise does differently, but the breads are fluffy and rise just like wheat-based breads.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Bread!

Editorial Review

When Michael Milken was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 1993, he wasted no time switching from his daily egg-and-bacon-sandwich breakfasts to a low-fat, vegetarian diet. He also founded CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate. Through research supported by CaP CURE, Milken learned that cutting down on fat was not enough--that soy protein could be an important missing ingredient in his diet. He duly incorporated all of the cancer-fighting ingredients into his diet, but he missed the joy of eating.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
The book presents recipes attractively.I've tried a few and they were easier and better than I expected, given the somewhat unusual ingredients for familiar foods. The book goes astray, to some degree, in my opinion, because it works too hard at recreating unhealthy high fat foods with low-fat, high-soy, equivalents.Better to just present vegetarian recipees that don't try to seem like something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars a treat for the eyes
what i loved most about this book is the 'photojournalist'4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who are lactose intolerant
I purchased this book because it contained recipes like flan that didn't require any dairy products. It also provides some great tips for substituting out ingredients like cream and other milk products without sacrificing texture and taste.Read more

Holley Bishop loves bees. No, more than that: she idolizes them. She marvels at their native abilities and the momentous role these misunderstood and unjustly feared creatures have played in the development of human history. And with her book, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars She's as sweet as....
I don't think I can add much to all of the valid points the other reviewers have touched on (although I take issue with the scientific criticisms of one reviewer - I think she didn't read those passages closely enough) however I can't resist saying how enjoyable and eminently readable Holley Bishop's book is.
4-0 out of 5 stars well written
I found this book to be a great read. The writing was quite eloquent and absorbing and I found that I got to know honey bees intimately. Because the structure of the book, the sense you get of the history of the honey bee is somewhat fragmented. I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is something lacking to the science side, although very well researched and very nearly comprehensive, I didn't feel like the social and environmental issues facing this amazing creature were sufficiently addressed. I was dissappointed that the issue of genetically engineered food and organisms was glossed over, this however may be because the book is largely set in the USA which is one of the few countries worldwide where the implications and effects of GMO's for humans and animals are also largely glossed over. I felt that Hattie Ellis in her wonderful history: "Sweetness and Light: The Mysterious History of the Honey Bee" did a remarkable job at addressing the various issues of the plight of the modern honey bee, and like Holley Bishop's book is a very compelling read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good History Book, Bad Science Reference
Bishop presents an entertaining history of bees and beekeeping, and gives us an absolutely fascinting tour into the relationship between humans and bees, both ancient and modern. What she misses are her science references:

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book has the Best Tasting Wheat-Free Pumpkin Pie Recipe
This is a great cookbook. The pumkin pie crust is wheat free and it tastes great. It's always a hit at the holidays, and the pumkin pie part of the recipe is dairy free, this recipe is so nutritious that you can eat it anytime. The entire book has some great solutions. And if you are in NYC you should try to take a class at Ann Marie's Cooking School.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
This is a great follow-up to The Book of Whole Meals, because the food gets more creative. The first part of the book explains how to balance meals using the Chinese 5-Element system, which really helps in overcoming cravings for junk foods. They also label the recipes so you can figure out how to fit them into the system. I have to admit I've mainly used the book for this purpose. For the recipes, I adjusted them to suit my own taste, and found them satisfying. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The Sugar Busters! diet lets you eat just about anything except certain carbohydrates, including refined sugars, red and white potatoes, corn, white rice, highly processed grains, beets, and carrots. This cookbook offers a variety of Sugar Busters!- acceptable recipes, averaging about 40 percent "correct" carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat. These recipes won't keep you in the kitchen all day, though most aren't produced in a flash, either. Breakfasts are predominantly egg dishes. Lunches include Stir-Fried Ginger Chicken, Chesapeake Crab Cakes, Whole-Wheat Spaghetti with Olive-Tomato Sauce, Fourth of July Macaroni Salad (colorful with red onions, tomatoes, green bell peppers, and onions), and Bayou Spicy Boiled Shrimp. Dinner entrées emphasize meat, fish, and poultry, with some regional and international dishes. The collection also includes separate recipe sections for vegetables, appetizers, salad dressings, sauces, and holiday dishes. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I was pleasantly surprised by this cookbook. The recipes are very easy to use and to shop for. The food taste very good. I had more energy and overall felt better. This cookbook is very helpful to me as a person with hypoglycemia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Tool
The book is very helpful in putting together menus for people who have to watch their diet. It takes a lot of guesswork out of what to cook, and portions etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars I FINALLY UNDERSTAND HOW MY BODY WORKS!
I am surprised at the negative comments by the 'vegetarians'. This book is for everyone and has recipes that will work for you! I have just begun ANOTHER weight loss mission and have already lost 10lbs! I don't feel hungry and now understand the foods that will make my body eat the fat instead of store it. I now look at all labels and will not buy anything that has 1 or more grams of sugar. Once I started looking at labels it was amazing to see just how much sugar I was eating without realizing. I am approaching 40 and my body was not responding to diets, exercise or anything. It is responding now. I am not a cook, but with this book, I am able to cook the recipes with ease and I like the meals! There are plenty of choices too. I hesitated before buying this book, but it was the best book purchase that I have ever made! Good luck to you too! I could hardly put this book down. Just like my new morning brew made from soy beans. Taste like coffee, sans the caffeine, and contains no tannic acids. I have no more heartburn and that is something to write about. Google it online under "s oyfee".

It's so refreshing to read a book that doesn't preach "diet". It's a vicious cycle. What we eat affects our mood and our mood affects what we want to eat!!

This book is an overview of nutritional and dietary practices, and how they can affect your health, particularly your mental well-being.It is organized into two main sections: The Food-Mood Link, and Nutrition Know-How.In the first section, there are separate chapters about such topics as blood chemistry, carbohydrates, fats and chocolate, and dietary affects on energy levels, PMS and SAD, depression, stress, thinking and memory, as well as chapters on food allergies and intolerances, and eating disorders. The second section presents advice on healthy eating habits for positive mental well-being, with chapters on shopping and supplements. At the end of the book are a glossary, a short section of recipes, a list of organizations devoted to specific diet and health concerns, references organized by chapter, and an index.
