This book provides a unique balance of readability and technical information.I have trouble blindly following a books' "instructions for healing" until I understand the reasoning behind it. Vaydaprovides a brief, satifying technical explanation of each condition, possible causes, and non-detailed recommendations. For the impatient amongus, this book is short and densly packed with information in an interestingand readable form. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A really great, new GF cookbook
I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) Bette Hagman's books are the first couple of books that I got, and they're pretty good. There are still a lot of recipes that I make out of those books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gluten-Free Recipes
Celiac disease is a poorly understood digestive disorder that affects both children and adults. It is an auto-immune disease that affects the small intestine, and is the result of an intolerance to gluten found in wheat, rye and barley and products derived from these grains. There are no drugs or a cure for this disease. Only a diet free of foods containing gluten is effective in living with the disease and avoiding the symptoms which make celiac disease so troubling. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best ever gluten free cookbook!
I am totally impressed with this cookbook.I have adapted recipes and cooked for my celiac husband for over 10 years and I thought I knew a lot about good gluten free baking. However, this book has given me a ton of good ideas (and recipes that work) and has rekindled my interest in baking.I particularly liked the lemon yogurt scones, shortcake, and white cake recipes.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe it gets better...
I recently purchased this book because I saw the recipe for a Pineapple Cake that needed no eggs and was supposed to be quick (it was) and make a "melt in your mouth" cake (it wasn't). I am a fairly accomplished cook and was surprised when I had to throw the cake away. I've never done that before! It was that bad--maybe I did something wrong, but I can't think what, as I followed the very short, easy recipe to the letter.I hope that the other recipes in the book that sound good (Black Bean Dip, Baked French Toast, Salmon Bisque--using leftover Salmon--some soups, like Shrimp, Corn and Sweet Potato Soup and some salads, like Mixed Green Salad with Cranberries and Sunflower Seeds, make the book worth the price. That's why I rated it 3 stars--it's got to get better than that cake!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best vegetarian cookbooks I have ever come across!
I have been a vegetarian for more than 25 years, and this is my favorite cookbook of the dozens I have acquired. The recipes are varied and come out very well -- the Veggie Paella (pictured on the cover), made with the Mediterranean stock (recipe is also in the book), is out of this world! There are also wonderful recipes with quinoa and other grains and beans that aren't found in most cookbooks (try the quinoa tabouli or quinoa caviar for a treat!).I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys good meatless meals!

5-0 out of 5 stars A cookbook you can use.
It's true. The recipes are good and only unnecessary fat is cut out.The recipes aren't too complicated or time-consuming and I haven't had a failure yet.If you like Alice Water's Vegetables, Deborah Madison and the like, you should enjoy this cookbook.Happy Cooking!

5-0 out of 5 stars High-Flavor, Low Fat Cooking
This books and all of Deborah Madisons' cookbooks are the standards in our household. If you only purchase it for two recipes the Paella and the Lasagna, you will have added great dishes to your menus.Your friends willlove them too. They have flavor, texture, are visually impressive and funto plan a meal around. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, Healthy Food Fast!
I love to browse through different cookbooks.I have quite a collection, and usually go to the library to find new recipes to try before I decide to purchase the entire book.I normally look for 3 things in a cookbook, besides delicious recipes that will work for my family. This includes:
3-0 out of 5 stars quick dinners
This book is pretty good at quick light cuisine, but its not very original, like the magazine from which it comes, the ingredients are often very similar giving many of the recipes similar tastes. I have found at least four good recipes that my whole family have liked though- the turkey and peas is delicious and kid friendly.I recommend buying the magazine first- Eating Well, and then deciding on the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eating Well does it again!
Eating Well Magazine in my favorite cooking magazine and this book is every bit as good. The recipes are easy to do, and are delicious, as well as healthy. My only negative comment is that I already have a lot of the recipes from the magazine. ... Read more

This book is fantastic! I loved every recipe I tried! Bravo Don! Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars No silly foofy food here
You don't have to be a guy to appreciate this book stuffed full of date-worthy dishes. I use this cookbook more than any on my shelf, and noone can ever believe these recipes are low-fat. From Chinese food to Carolina-style turkey BBQ, everything I've tried so far in this book is a real winner. Thank you, Don Mauer, for showing us healthy food that can be every bit as rich and tasty as the "bad" stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This book, along with Don Mauer's prior cookbook, Lean and Lovin It, helped me lose over 70 pounds.A lot of low fat cookbooks really aren't written by people who like to eat or cook, and it shows. This one is written by someone who enjoys both. These recipes make eating low fat food not just palatable, but a way of life. One note -- a few of the recipes in this book appear to be improvements from the earlier cookbook -- the hummus and cocolate sauce recipes come to mind -- but I'm actually happy to try the variations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars M. Kushner - Fake reviewer
I am training for a marathon and wanted to learn more about Glycemic Index as it is very important information for endurance sports as well as life in general.Something made me check the "see other reviews by this author"I guess I was interested in finding the caffiene book.Well, this person has written 255 diet/cookbook reviews in about 2 weeks.Going from claims of not being overweight and never had been, to contemplating gastric bypass surgery for weight loss. So, I was quite suprised at this. So, I will say, possible purchasers, if you are going to buy or not according to some review, check out the reviewer, I guess some people really need to get a life!!Sad. I plan to buy this book, since I have to give a number of stars, I will give what the great majority have done just so as not to skew the results this book has already garnered.I will post a new review after reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Lifesaver
I have enough 30-minute cookbooks to open my own bookstore. While the recipes in them are good, at times, they take more than 30-minutes to prepare when trying to help a 6-year old with homework. This book makes a overwhelmed grandma cry.I cooked on Sunday and Monday I picked up my grandson from daycare, prepared dinner, helped with his homework, got him ready for bed and cleaned the kitchen all before 9:00 p.m.I'm usually up until midnight cleaning and preparing for work the next day.Thank you, thank you Dena Irwin. My search is over.

5-0 out of 5 stars This cookbook rocks!!!!
I have a shelf full of highly rated cookbooks, but always had issues with finding the time, experience, and organization to use them. Domestic I am not, but eating out all the time is expensive and unhealthy so I found this fantastic little book (thanks for all the reviews, everyone).
4-0 out of 5 stars Great concept; recipes not kid friendly
I'm a working mom of 4 boys, all under the age of 10.I really like this book and the overall concept.Having it state specifically what to make and how to use the leftovers from today to use as an ingredient in tomorrow's meal, is a huge time saving idea. The pre-made shopping lists are such a perk. The book is useable from the moment you open it; no lengthy reading required to implement it's plan.

Editorial Review

In the 1970s, Alice Waters helped launch the revolution in American cuisine. She inspired a generation of food lovers with her passion for freshness and the best ingredients. Her influence helped infuse menus all over the U.S. with dishes rooted in Mediterranean cooking, often with a sunny, California twist. Dishes at the casual café, located upstairs in the same enchanting house as Chez Panisse, her more formal restaurant in Berkeley, California, include Wood Oven Baked Porcini Mushrooms, Tuna Confit, and Meyer Lemon Éclairs. Waters suggests making the mushrooms in your fireplace if you can, although recipe directions are for a conventional oven. Typical of the ingredient-driven cooking Waters encourages, the stunning tang of the éclairs requires Meyer lemons: a cross between a lemon and an orange, which are now exported beyond their native California. But the fresh tuna steak gently simmered in olive oil with garlic, fresh thyme, and fennel seeds and served with barely cooked green beans and aïoli, a pungent garlic mayonnaise, is sublime even made in an apartment kitchen. Her point is that you should use her recipes as guides, letting them inspire you to make the most of locally produced, seasonal foods in your area. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a Cookbook, not quite a Classic
This book is, at the very least, a feast for the eyes due to the hauntingly Art Nouveau woodcut illustrations by David Lance Goines. This, together with Alice Water's substantial reputation sets the bar of expectations very high for this book.4-0 out of 5 stars You Didn't Expect To Cook With This, Did You?
My foodie friends in Berkeley jokingly refer to Alice's books as "food porn". I have actually cooked a couple of the recipes and, while they are correct, they are exhausting. In Berkeley, CA, where the author's restaurant is thriving, it is easy to get the interesting and seasonal ingredients that are described in the book. However, the complexity of preparation of the recipes makes the book less acessible to most readers and home cooks.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the serious cook
I had made many things out of the book, and all have turned out delicious. The success of the dishes depends completely on having the highest quality, freshest ingredients available. If you can't get a hold of any pancetta or prosciutto, you're going to be really limited in what you can prepare from this book. The cookbook is definitely for a serious home cook, who's interested in spending time in the kitchen, making homemade sausages, experimenting with homemade pancetta, etc.If that's you, you will love it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy Ayurvedic Cookbook
The recipes are easy to follow and not expensive to make.Trying to eat healthy gets to be so expensive, this book offers many tasty economical alternatives to fast food.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for the lazy healthnut
This book has easy to follow/easy to cook recipes. I've already made two of the recipes, neither of which required obscure or expensive foods, and both of which were very easy to make. Both recipes took 20 minutes TOTAL - preparation & cooking time - to make, which is an added bonus since I find many veggie/health recipes to be very consuming. To top it off, the results are tasty. One word of caution - some of these recipes are a little ayurvedic suspicious - there are some foods which one may consider to be unfriendly to certain doshas but are listed underneath the dosha recipe anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on Ayervedic cooking
This book is a must! If you're interested in Ayurvedia and its principles - then you'll really enjoy this book. It has sections on the constitutions and recipes for each of these. 1-0 out of 5 stars Bland and Bad is more like it
I bought this cookbook a few years ago because a friend and I were trying to eat healthier. We made the peach cake and it was inedible, tasted like dog food with peaches. We were afraid to try much else.We started laughing about it over time and calling the author "Karen Barfie."One of the worst cookbooks I've ever used.

1-0 out of 5 stars tried the cheescake--it was not good.
The cheesecake (I used a pear puree -- one of the purees that were recommended) came out rubbery and not sweet at all.I was so disappointed...This was so bad that I didn't want to risk trying anything else.I guess I'll keep looking for other sugar-free cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy Days are here again...
Thank you, Thank you Bette Hagman for taking your disease and making such a wonderful contribution to the rest of the world.I have a husband and now a nephew that both need the gluten free programs, except when I first started with my husband most doctors did not have a clue what we were dealing with. I even went to a dietician at the hospital and she walked away with 3 pages of information, and I had nothing,I just paid the office fee. I made up a lot of things on my own but until I found Bette; I could never seem to find a way to put bread back into his diet. Now he eats everything just like the rest of the world. We are so fortunate that now this disease is more well known and how it is affecting at least 1 out of 250 people, makes Bette Hagman more important than ever.I have all of her books and they go with me everywhere. What a blessing, it has made life so much more for those that are suffering.

5-0 out of 5 stars For a celiac this book is a salvation.
If a celiac wants to avoid the ghastly annoyance of gluten hidden in foods of which you cannot find out what's in it, this book is a bible for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent wheat/gluten-free cookbook.
Ms. Hagman's three Gluten-Free Gourmet cookbooks have been a godsend to me.Not only have I been happy with all of her recipes, but I have learned from her cookbooks how to experiment with various gluten-free flours toadapt favorite recipes to be "safe" for me on a more restricteddiet._More from the Gluten-Free Gourmet_ is Ms. Hagman's second book, andthe first in which she offers recipes to be made in a bread machine.Iwould strongly recommend purchasing all three of her cookbooks, but if oneonly wants to buy - or to start with - one book, I feel that this would bethe most helpful one.Enjoy! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and Bias
A lot of the information suggests diets and foods that are not acceptable for everyone. They push macrobiotic and raw diets which are not the best. Many vegetables (such as tomatoes) need to be heated at a particular temperature enable to reach their full nutritional value. Also this book suggests many soy-based products, when in reality soy was created as an easy substitute to cow-dairy and is extremely processed. Many consumers are unaware of the fact that soy is very toxic to the body and is only nutritional when fermented (tempeh or miso).Someone who is allergic to cow-dairy should try goat-diary.Goat cells are smaller and easier for humans to digest, and has far more nutritional value and no allergens that cow diaryis exposed to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I am a nutritional consultant and recommend this book to all my clients.Juicing is a nutrient dense way to get important vitamins and minerals. The Juicing Bible provides not only a wide variety of wonderful recipes, but also includes information on juices for specific health problems. There is a section on smoothies and medicinal teas as well.An excellent book - the only juicing book you'll ever need.A perfect gift for a health conscious friend, or one who should be.Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointed
I was looking for recipes for my father who has difficulty swallowing due to advanced Alzheimer's.While I found the explanations, introductions and tips useful, the recipes were not of much use in our own situation.I would think that this book would be good for somebody who has difficulty CHEWING.For those with Alzheimer's, however, I'm not so sure. Many of the recipes could have been found in my "normal" cookbooks.Recipes that contain any opposites (broth with solids or hard/soft foods together) really aren't much use to us at this point. ... I realized this book was written YEARS ago after I received it. With medical science making such progress. I have to wonder how correct the book is now.I have a dog, Muffin that has cancer and I am desperately trying to save her.

I love this book...It's been such a help after finding out the shocking news that my husband has lymphoma. It uses all the "right foods" nutritionally speaking, to assist with his treatment plan. The food isdelicious. So much so that I'm eating healthfully as well.I've foundthat recipes easy to follow and quick to prepare. It would have beenalmost impossible for me to figure out how to incorporate soy in our dietsin such a tasteful way.I appreciate the book, the tips in it and thepeace of mind it's given me in knowing the I'm feeding my loved one thebest that I can.Thank you! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars try it
I was looking for ideas for feeding my family and keeping all of us in the zone.this is it.Also has good discriptions (what they are, where to find them) of some basic ingredients that are used a lot in the zone.Good info to help get your kitchen stocked. Yummy recipes.

2-0 out of 5 stars Zone in Seconds--yeah right!
The title of this book is a bit mis-leading. Many of the recipes call for many, many ingredients and the prep time is off. For example, one recipe says 20 min. prep time. But after you read it, it says to put something in the fridge for several hours. Making a lifestyle change like the Zone is hard enough without adding the frustration of buying sooo many ingredients and putting together complicated recipes. Plus, chicken and Salmon are about the only ingredients as meats. Where's pork or turkey?

4-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Title
First of all, I would like to say that The Zone Diet has changed my life! I have clearer focus, and can think better, sleep better, and I'm happier. I bought this book thinking it would help me cook faster meals. Lynn Sears understands the dilemma, but the book doesn't really address how to eat quick Zone meals, and they are VERY expensive. So far I haven't been able to make one recipe because I can't afford ALL of the ingredients! However, the ideas, the advice about eating out, and everything except the recipes is extremely helpful. Borrow the book from someone first. ... Read more
