Just What I Needed
I had many questions about smoking, shellfish in particular, and this book answered those questions.It is an easy to read book, that I would recommend for anyone interested in grilling and smoking fish!

Excellent book!
Many grilling and smoking books give seafood only passing attention; not this book. Recipes are excellent, and while they are much more adventurous than what is typically found in grilling and smoking books, they are still user friendly in both taste and ingredients. This is one book I'll keep on my "most used" shelf for some time to come.

Good Food- Fast!
I like this cookbook because it kept to basic ingredients.There is nothing worse than wanting to try a recipe and having to spend extra money on ingredients you will only use in one recipe.I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but am looking forward to it soon.

Eat Well While Traveling
I discovered this book when it was featured in Highways magazine.Learning to cook decent meals in an RV can be tricky.There's little counter space, minimal cupboard space and the fridge won't hold much, unless you have a top-of-the-line motorhome.
A must have for RV'ers !
After seeing JoAnna Lund make some easy dishes on the RV Today series, I decided that I would like to have a copy of her book. This book is a must have for RV'ers and home cooks alike! The book is full of easy, healthy and tasty receipes that you can make quickly. Well rounded grilling guide
This is an excellent book to get, when you want to go to the next level of grilling.Reading it is a hoot, you can almost hear him talking his way through the book.What I really like is that this book is not just about grilling, but also includes lots of complimentary dishes that go well with it.Check out the last page for the pie, you will see what I mean.Still trying to balance out the timing on how to run two grills, but I'll get it down.Best part I really like is the added commentary on what dishes to serve together, great choices!!

Not by Robert Rainford!
I was looking for a cookbook by Robert Rainford the chef and host of the show License to Grill.Typing in his name pulled up this book. The Hungry Backpacker
This is a must have book for the backpacker.It is full of great recipes and cooking hints.I would recommend this to anyone packing thier own food.

You can't go wrong with June
I like my backcountry meals to come together easily at home from easily purchased ingredients, to be very lightweight, and to cook quickly in camp so they don't waste time and fuel. At the same time, I can't stand most packaged meals and find that simply adding boiling water to a packaged meal yields only UFOs: Unidentifiable (and inedible) Floating Objects. I'm not interested in wasting time, money, and weight on being "gourmet" in the backcountry. *The Well-Fed Backpacker* by June Fleming strikes the perfect balance for me. For her recipes that I like the best, the shopping is easy, the preparation at home and in camp is easy, the weight is light (especially Cheesy Bacospuds), and the taste is good to great. This is the most practical recipe book for backpackers that I know of.

This Is The One
I went over the backpacking cookbooks offered on Amazon using the extremely useful viewable pages, and selected the three I thought were best. Of the three I purchased, the Well-Fed-Backpacker is notably more informative. It is in that class of books known as perennial favorites, first published in 1976 and still a very strong book today in its third edition. I should know, I tested the recipes!
Culinary school did not teach me how to man handle the grill, Elizabeth Karmel did! This book will light your fire and keep it burning; even in mid February when you're sporten your long undies.Taming the Flame is full of great tips, tricks, and techniques. If you don't own this book my guess is you're just flat out grilling wrong!
Fabulous Flame Tamer
If you follow the clear step-by-step instructions from lighting the fire to clean-up and select any recipe in this well written, fun to read book, you will have a wonderful meal and increase your confidence about grillilng.

Catch the Passion & Heat

Great Inspiration for Grillers
I just purchased Get Grilling after seeing a demonstration by the Food Network Kitchens Staff at Chef Central, and I have to say it is THE best book on grilling I have seen.As someone who was recently crushed to discover an allergy to beef, I thought my grilling days were over.They had me from the first recipe though - shrimp spring rolls with dipping sauce.The creative takes on these recipes are exciting.This isn't a book with 20 million recipes for barbecue sauce.They really took the time and developed many varied dishes and captured the whole spirit of grilling.The varied foods include fun appetizers, as well as lamb, and swordfish.By not simply concentrating on ribs and burgers, they gave me ideas on new things and new ingredients to try.The tips are easy to spot but don't get in the way of the recipe.The shopping tips and explanations of new ingredients and where to get them are helpful also.Worth the price of several other grilling books combined.A wonderful recipe book.

Get Going With Get Grilling
Once again food editor Jennifer Darling (who did the fantastic BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS COOKBOOK that has become a standby) comes through for the people at Food Network with a winner.Though our days here in the Bay Area have been filled with rain, inside we've managed to do some indoor grilling and used sixof the recipes she provides (including side dish recipes, which eliminated the need to use the range entirely).With a gas grill, everything's easy especially in a moist climate, but as the book says, there will always be people who prefer charcoal and more power to them.Most of the recipes Darling includes can be adapted for both.Now that summer is almost upon us this book will get a real workout.It is sort of a heavy book, I'll tell you that, but one thing about people who use cookbooks, we know what it's like to have to lift!Not that 2 pounds is particularly notable any more.

This book on the history of smoking is not only an articulate guide which dispenses with the "silly" notion of cancer, but it involves the reader on a sojourn that is out of this world. Explore ancient smoking history, ranging from Chinese opium pipes in the 800 AD era to a more refined place called Paris where tobacco was shipped in X-Ray tubes to keep freshness.Comes with free lighter fluid and a carton of cigs.
Smokin'
I really like this cookbook.If you are new to indoor smoking and using the stovetop smoker, it is a very useful guide that covers tips on using the smoker, pairing woodchips with a variety of foods, and plenty of tasty recipes.It also includes the author's personal experiences with using the smoker.This is a definite plus that shows up in the recipes and indicates that the author is familiar with them and didn't just collect a bunch of untried recipes to fill up the book.One comment that caught my attention was the turkey wings, the author mentions that he doesn't smoke them to eat as a main dish because they can be tough.I used to bake turkey wings portions in the oven at a low temperature and they always turned out great.Now I smoke them first and then finish them in the oven.Now they are even better! A Must For Campers Everywhere
I used this book for the first time this past weekend. Everything was delicious and very easy to make : San Francisco Cioppino, Cheesy Biscuits one night, and pancakes made with the multipurpose baking mix the next morning. I am dying to try more recipes when we go again in three weeks.
For both the hardened camper and the novice; for the camping trip and the backyard grill; for the basics and the super-spreads
This book received high marks from me before I even opened it--it has a compact format and a sturdy paperback cover, perfect for packing in your camping gear without excess weight or bulk.By compact, I am referring only to the cover dimensions; this is a thick recipe-packed book that is well worth the cover price.

A different view of the grill
Not particularly amusing.Does, however, provide some different cooking results from the normal.I'm not certain I would get another one if mine disappeared.

A charming cookbook
Recipes are fairly simple, which greatly enhances the probability that the reader will actually use them. Also the recipes aren't so many, which is good since you just need a few good ones, not an confusing endless array of them. Food is put in a context in a humorous way, which is a nice bonus.
Redneck humor and Southern spice
The Redneck Grill: The Most Fun You Can Have With Fire, Characoal, And A Dead Animal: it would do equally well in our humor section, but is featured here for its very serious barbecue recipes, from grilled rabbit to maple-grilled pound cake. Add a layer of saucy Foxworthy redneck humor and Southern spice and an exceptionally handy 'glazed hardcover' format with spill-proof pages and you have a book readily accessible by the 'que.

This book inspired my husband and I to have a picnic on Mother's Day - tablecloth on the picnic table underneath the oak tree, portable radio playing tinny-sounding oldies on the AM dial.What a perfect brunch. We started with Jackson's "Champagne Punch #5" and later had the delicate and scrumptious "Crepes w/Swiss Chard & Golden Raisins."I'm making his "Rhubarb Custard Tart" next, which looks really delicious -- even though, as he says, food tastes a little better when you're outside, I'm sure this is going to taste pretty darn good when I eat it in the house as well.

Real smoked ribs aren't boiled first
Have to agree with some of the other reviewers.This isn't the book to get if you're new to smoking foods.Much better books are out there.The recipies were fine until I got to the part about how to prepare ribs.None of the other books I have on smoking would even dare bring up boiling your ribs before placing them on the grill.Yet, recipe after rib recipe calls for boiling your ribs and then throwing them on the grill.It's true that boiling will render the fat and make the meat tender but it'll also make it bland.Why am I harping on this?Because the real test for quality smoked foods includes ribs (brisket and pork shoulder are the other tests).

I found this book to only be okay and boring it needs zaz not blaa..That is what it is blaa. I would pass it on or give it to a in-law then to keep it.It has good reciepes but no more then the other ones and it is a basic book. I think ,if this is to have a bang it needs more then what it has..

Good but not great
As another reviewer said, this book should not be the first book an a BBQers library.Although it has numerous recipes (including smoked vegetables and 17 different mops & sauces), it lacks the basics.There are no basic "recipes" for whole turkey, salmon or baby back ribs.There isn't even a temperature chart.The author discusses the difference between grilling and BBQing, and different types of smokers.There is a good discussion of wood types, but I wish I had read the other reviews before buying it. ... Good stuff!
I have quite a few cookbooks, and even more camping books. I would rate this as one of the better books I have read about cooking in the woods. The instructions are easy to follow and the recipes are delicious. There are about 200 tasty recipes total, and he uses camp stoves, dutch ovens, reflector ovens, and the fire itself. The book has advice on pans and what to pack. He shows you how to cook the meals for big groups and small alike. And there are plenty of fun recipes for kids and scouts in here as well. He shows you how to cook in foil to cut down on dishes and pans, and other timesavers.Read more

The best cookbook ever
I dare you to find a bad recipe in this book. Every single recipe is a winner. The Jamaican cole slaw is so good everyone who eats it asks me for the recipe. The same for the jerk chicken. I love this book.

Veggie BBQ!
My husband and I have been vegetarians for about twenty years and are raising our kids vegetarian too. For years I've always brought veggie burgers and tofu pups to other people's barbeque parties every summer. I thought we needn't bother owning a grill of our own because all we could make on it would be garden burgers anyway (how exciting is that? not very!) Anyway, this book has shown me how wrong I was. We recently acquired a very nice gas grill and I have been cooking up a storm on it! I've been using this cookbook and everything has been delicious. Not one bad recipe so far. I had a BBQ party of my own finally for my sons first Birthday recently and it was a totally hit. I made veggie pizzas (with the recipe from this book, although I used my own pizza dough recipe.)I grilled up all the veggies and than had everyone fix their own pizzas which I grilled for them. It was a lot of fun. Everyone gobbled them them up, raving about how delicious they were. Plus it was nice for people to see that a BBQ doesn't have to revolve around meat.
Yet another book that doesn't get it!
Let me start by saying that I enjoy reading cookbooks as much as I enjoy using them, and from the first read, I am not very impressed.I really wanted a vegetarian grilling book, what I got was a book that calls for chicken stock in at least one recipe, tells me what kind of meat I could throw in to the mix and tells me that I won't even miss the meat.While there may be pros and cons to the cheese question, how can anyone justify chicken broth in a vegetarian cook book?
