5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories and great food
The book was so entertaining and have tried a couple of the recipes already and they are great.Haven't seen "Big John" in over 20 years, but thought the book would be a great present for a friend, Bob Stout (not knowing that Mark had sent Bob the website and he'd already ordered his own copy).Just like having John in the room, reading the anecdotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big John's Speedway Grill
Good recipes that are easy to follow, interesting stories, very informative for new tailgaters. You don't have to be a race fan to enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lipsmackin' Vegetarian Backpackin' - a meatless collection
I really enjoyed the first book by Tim and Christine Conners and now the couple has come out with a second book in the Lipsmackin' Backpackin' series that is completely vegetarian. Recipes include Fabulous Fry Brownies, Miso Madness, Algonquin Apple Leather and a series of bread recipes that would make any backpacking trip more enjoyable. There are great dishes for each meal time and some wonderful GORP ideas. The book has a range of drinks, fruit leathers and decadent desserts. I was pleasantly surprised when I found a recipe for Coleslaw which is dehydrated at home and rehydrated on the trail. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for trail food and not just for vegetarians!
Christine and Tim Conners did a great job putting this book together. Not just a collection of appealing trail food recipes, it gives tips on where to buy ingredients as well as other items of interest to the backwoods hiker/camper.I was privileged to be asked to contribute some of my own trail food ideas to this book.In my discussions with Christine, she told me that a lot of long distance hikers didn't like to use a dehydrator - something I can't identify with since my dehydrator has been invaluable in preparing for backwoods treks.Christine included a humorously written article about the benefits of the dehydrator. Many of the recipes include short notes from the contributors on the recipe and its use on the trail. If I had to pick one negative of the book, it would be that the title includes the word "vegetarian".I would think this may turn off the meat eaters. The book will appeal to all paddlers and trail hikers who want good tasting, unique, yet easy-to-prepare food. I own several trail food cookbooks, including the Conners other book, Lipsmackin' Backpackin'.I tend to reach for Lipsmackin' first when I am preparing for a trip and now I'm sure their new book will get just as much use from me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book before you turn on your grill
I'm a collector, and this is the best grilling cookbook I have ever seen.Recipes are flavorful, varied, and sophisticated, yet simple.I live in a southern state, and we grill almost every evening.I have several of the recipes from this book memorized because I have used them so much. Joe Famularo's other grilling cookbook, the Joy of Healthy Grilling is wonderful, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Source Book on Grilling
I purchased this book in 1989 and have prepared many of the recipes contained in it.They are without exception delicious. It also provides many helps on grilling techniques. If you're in the market for a grill, purchase this first. It will help you make a more informed decision.

My fiancee' and I cannot open this book without finding somethingmore we want to try.All recipes are easy to follow and come outbrilliantly. Our first excursion included stuffed salmon and artichokeswith garlic.Since then we have made at least another dozen dishes.Allsuperb - and they look like the pictures!By the way - the pictures areexcellent...I LOVE THIS BOOK! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction To Barbecue Style
This is book provides a good understanding of regional styles of barbecue.I genuinely liked it for its simplicity while still thoroughly exploring the subject of barbecue style differences. The recipes are the perfect finish to this book and serve to complement the text.
4-0 out of 5 stars From my review in "The National Barbecue News"
It seems no book these days can get by on title alone, but rather must also have some splashy subtitle thatmakes some wild and boastful claims of what you'll find inside. It's a sad truth, too, that so often the book itself pales in comparison to the subtitle and even sadder still when you've shelled out your hard-earned dollars to buy such a book. As a side note, you'll not find a review here on such books that will waste your money; Mama always said if you can't say anything nice then say nothing at all, so let the silence be your warning.5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to America's 4 regional styles of 'cue
This is a good book. It's different than some other barbecue books because it doesn't dwell on technique or one style of barbecue. It doesn't give opinions about which wood goes with what meat.It doesn't spend a lot of time on folksy tales. What it does give you is a well-rounded introduction into the four major U.S barbecue styles:Carolina, Memphis, Kansas City and Texas. And it gives you plenty of recipes to try. 5-0 out of 5 stars NOLS Cookery is hot!
I really liked this book on backcountry meal preparation. There are all sorts of usefull ideas from meal planning to packaging. The bulk of this book contains a large list of actual recipes proven at the NOLS. I liked the fact that the book actually has recipes that you could use. I expected a little more in the stove and cookware category, but only a minor gripe. I really did enjoy this book and plan on using it for future camping trips.

5-0 out of 5 stars KEY for expedition planning
This book is all you will ever need (and you WILL need it) to plan long trips.I find that planning food rations for long trips is one of the biggest logistical challenges. Not only can the planning be difficult, it can also be difficult to figure out which foods will keep your body energized and healthy over long periods of time (i.e. not Ramen). When you are on a high altitude expedition or on a long-distance backpacking trip this is very important. This book tells you which ingredients to bring along, how to break up food during the day (i.e. 10% of your food should be breakfast food, 25% should be lunch food, etc.) and which foods work well for each category.Included in the book are two worksheets which you can photocopy and use for each trip. The worksheets are basically formulas - you plug in the number of people in your group, the number of days you will be travelling, the quantity of food you want to take each day (the book also makes good reccomendations about how many pounds of food you should eat each day) - and then the book tells you how many pounds of breakfast foods, dinner foods, etc you will need for the entire trip.Once you have all of the basic ingredients, the book also has a great recipe section which tells you how to put together all of your ingredients into tasty meals. The book is small enough that you can take it with you on your trips (maybe 6 inches by 8 inches?).If you're really nitpicky you can cut the "cookbook" section out of the book and leave the rest at hometo save weight.I'm glad that I finally got around to writing a good review for this book, and someday I need to get around to writing a thank-you letter to Claudia Pearson for writing it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Add to the collection
Just one of many good books out there on how to cook while camping. However, if you are a light weekend hiker or some one who likes to cook simply, this is not the book for you.The concept of the NOLS school is that you'll carry a wide range of basic cooking stuff ( flower, sugar, etc), and thus have a wide range of meal options while hiking instaed of having to plan each meal in advance. 5-0 out of 5 stars A blend of quilts and recipes for hosting picnics
These new arrivals provide a wealth of projects for avid quilters and sewers. Suzette Halferty and Nancy Martin's Patchwork Picnic provides a blend of quilts and recipes for hosting picnics. From a 4th of July starred red, white and blue quilt to a blue willow pattern for a concert in the park, this pairs projects with holidays and food ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take me on a picnic!
It's been a long time since I've been on a picnic. I used to lovethem, and I'm not sure why we never go on them anymore. But this book is a visual picnic of quilts, foods, and color plates of antique cars and wildflowers and cello's and wild countryside with fine china and the soul of every fine picnic you have ever dreamed about. This volume is full of the kind of quilting projects I like best--practical and beautiful. There is a bee and bee hive quilt tablecloth to make for your patio and there are recipes for poached salmon and mango salsa to set on it. There's an Indian Summer quilt to spread on the ground beside your old black convertible to nibble on your sweet hazelnut pound cake. There's even a pastel dream house quilt to drag out to picnic at the building site of your new home. The book is a nice size and has full sized applique patterns and detailed color photos of quilts, accessories and country vegetation at it's peak. The directions and recipes are clear and there's a chapter at the end on quiltmaking basics. The best part of this book is that after browsing it for a lazy Saturday afternoon--it incited me to plan a picnic--maybe I'll make one of the fabric lined baskets and invite my husband to a ride in the country on his old silver wing. I've got a t-shirt quilt with dragon flies quilted on it and the dogwood and azealias are in bloom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Essential BBQ Books Of All Time
When this book came out in 1988, it was pretty much a revelation. I heard about it on NPR, where in an interview Bobby Seale talked about 'Que Bee Rab' - the opposite of real BBQ. Bobby talked about how most people didn't know how to BBQ - they'd stick some sauce on a piece of chicken, throw it on a hot grill, and then watch as the chicken turned into charcoal on the outside and undercooked pink meat on the inside.
5-0 out of 5 stars Left-Wing Radicals gotta eat!
Anyone who looks at this book will likely be expecting some sort of writings on left-wing radicalism. But that's not what this book is about at all, true, it was written by the co-founder of the Black Panther Party,Bobby Seale, but what he does in 'Barbecue 'N with Bobby', is enlighten usconnoiseurs of fine food with barbecue recipes. The recipes aremagnificent, and he even tells us some excellent tips on sauces and othertypes of delacacies. I honestly must stress moderation when using therecipes(before I bought the book I weighed 165 lbs, but now I've bloated upto almost 200lbs!, Bobby's great recipes certainly had something to do withmy degeneration into a bloated carbon copy of Che Guevara). If you likebarbecues, or like food in general, purchase this book immediately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCITED FOR SUMMER!
This book makes me pumped for summer! The recipes for the marinades and sauces look and sound really good. They are also explained very easily. One thing that I really liked about this cookbook, among others, is that the variety of meats, vegetables and all that good stuff is pretty big. It's not your 'regular old down home grillin' guide'.It's got pizazz, and I like that. I would recommend this cook book to anyone who likes grilling. Or, if you don't like grilling, get it for someone who does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
Wow. what a find.I was hesitant to buy the Williams and Sonoma book because I thought that the recipes would be too complicated and require expensive ingredients and be too fancy for the way I like to cook, but the dishes are easy to prepare and extremely elegant - without being too time consuming.I love this book.Got this book in the mail two weeks ago and have used it half a dozen times so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE the Williams-Sonoma Series!
This is a truely wonderful addition to any cookbook collection. Unlike most cookbooks that require you to spend a lot of money buying ingredients you most probably will only use once, these recipes mostly require olive oil, garlic, onions, peppers, the basic seasonings (e.g., oregano, salt, blackor lemon pepper, etc.), and occasionally one more fancy addition (making the dishes MUCH less expensive, and allowing the true delicious taste of the meats and vegetables to come through). The book also offers a nice variety of dishes. It includes recipes for grilling chicken, fish, meat, mushrooms, AND deserts!(Did you know you can make a desert on the grill?)As a last point, these simple dishes can look fancy enough to impress anyone.I made a whole dinner for my husband on our two year wedding anniversary.I served the Shrimp with Lemon-Garlic Butter and Grilled Portobello Mushrooms with Basil Oil over rice, the Grilled Red Pepper, Sweet Onion, and Tomato Salad on the side, and the Grilled Pears with Rasberry-Grand Manier Sauce for desert. It took me about 45 minutes to prepare all the rubs and sauces (just because it was my first time putting it all together), but about 10 minutes to cook everything at the same time, and 3 minutes to serve. The meal was such a hit that my husband wants to make a new grilling dish every Wednesday night!By the way, for the novice grillers, the book also offers a glossary and an instructional section discussing types of grills, preparing the grill, checking for doneness, etc.I hope you enjoy the book as much as we do! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Returning book immediately
I ordered this book hoping to find some good recipes for BBQing but instead I found a book that would you give part of the recipe and then you need the secret ingredient, cookshack's rib rub. Most of the recipes require you to order different types of rubs from cookshack instead of giving you the information needed to make the rub.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing at best.....
I purchased a Cookshack smoker over 5 years ago and have experimented with it off and on.While I realize that barbeque is more art than science, I have been frustrated by the lack of information on just how much wood to use with particular recipes.I pre-ordered this book in anticipation of learning some secrets and tricks in the use of the Cookshack smoker.I waited for more than a month for delivery of the book and upon receipt of it, I eagerly delved into it looking for answers to my many questions. To my great disappointment, this book offered absolutely no information that I hadn't learned from trial and error. How much wood should I use?The book suggests that I consult the Cookshack Operator's Manual. There are some general guidelines but the guidelines don't tell you what amount of wood works best with what amount of food.Although I have had some delicious food from the Cookshack, if I am cooking for guests, I use my Brinkmann smoker as I am more confident that the food will be cooked to perfection. The water smoker takes longer, but is more forgiving than the sealed, dry smoking Cookshack. People who like to smoke fish will find 48 pages of recipes. If you prefer beef or pork, the list is much smaller, 16 and 15 pages respectively. There are also small sections dedicated to sausages, lamb and game.In short, this is a book that should have been a digest for Cookshack owners and prospective buyers. At best, it is a generic guide for smoking recipes. It doesn't promote the product line and it isn't a worthwhile choice for anyone new to smoking foods. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy camping recipes
I have made 5 of the recipes in this book so far and have enjoyed them all.It covers all varieties of camp cooking from pie irons to dutch ovens to foil packets to the grill. The recipes I chose required no pre-cooked meat as stated in a previous review, and I have only seen a couple of recipes that do.The recipes are easy to assemble and some can be prepared to marinate before you leave home, making cooking on the road even easier.I found this a good basic campfire cookbook that gives you a little bit of everything and every campfire cooking method.I would recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great if everything is pre-cooked....
Most of the recipes call for prepared meat, not too helpful if you want to actually "cook" on the fire. A few clever things, but I'm returning it, not very useful. ... Read more

The idea of cooking with solar energy is new to me, but since I've been so impressed by previous publications by Lorraine Anderson, I decided to give the book a whirl and order it. The 150 easy recipes include a tantalizing tomato bisque soup, a unique Ozark pudding, and a to-die-for Boppin' John (traditional New Year's Day dinner down South).Using the free and clean energy of the sun will appeal to anyone hoping to be more environmentally responsible. Not only do Anderson and Palkovic teach neonates like me how to construct a solar oven (out of tin foil, cardboard, newspapers, and glass!), but the book also lists places where I can order such ovens. As for me, I'll be taking the solar cooker and a copy of Cooking with Sunshine to the Mississippi River beaches this summer.Bon appetit. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Creative ideas for camping
This really is a cool book, with all sorts of ideas for cooking in the outdoors, many that I had never thought of, (like cooking eggs and bacon in a bag stuck on a stick over the fire). The first part of the book talks about outdoor cooking at home, and has some neat frugal ideas for outdoor parties, then the book delves into camping for a chapter or so.(Dian has some really good organizational ideas for large and small groups.)The last 3/4 of the book is devoted to camp cooking. The ideas for cooking over the fire are really cool, and for someone who has done only a bit of camping and car camping at that, really unusual. However, if you like your food fresh and not from a can or packet, the recipes are pretty useless. Here are your cakes made from cake mix and canned fruit, casseroles with cream of whatever soup and all sorts of seasoning packets. If this sort of thing does'nt bother you, then the book should be perfect, if you're a health nut like me, it will.

3-0 out of 5 stars some innovative ideas
This book had many neat ideas to try with the kids while camping.I learned much about cooking actually in the coals and also using the dutch oven.I would reccomend this book to anyone new to camping or to intermediate campers who want to try new ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideas galore to save money
I first read this book as a teenage boy scout. I had camped once a month for many years and had tried all kinds of tricks to save money when camping, make your own gear, fun outdoor recipes, etc. but this book had tons of new ideas I had never heard of. 20 years after the first edition of this book means the author has updated it to our times, but it still great. This has always been indespensable to me. It really has made camping more fun and I reccommend it to anyone that takes kids camping, but you don't have to have them to try this stuff. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment
Don't waste your money.Their first book. Smoke & Spice, was one of the best I own.The success must have gone to their heads. It's a shame that they will surely make a lot of money for this poor effort only because of the first books quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outdoors cooking companion
This is the book I bought when I first bought a smoker several years ago and it has been very helpful. It serves the needs of the beginner or the more experienced outdoor cook. The recipes are pretty interesting and range from complex to quite simple, with an international flare. Although initially I bought the book to help me with smoking techniques and recipes I have found it extremely helpful as a "normal" cookbook. The sauces, pastes, dressings and marinade suggestions are easily transferred to traditional indoor cooking and I have done so as a result. The recipes also serve as a springboard for one's own creative ideas. Even if you don't have the time to follow the recipes it is fun to read them and imagine. Who knows it may even inspire you to smoke something outdoors! Recommended for all outdoor cooks who want to do something besides bbq on the grill.

3-0 out of 5 stars Feh
I had great hopes for this book, as I thought it would provide me with a range of interesting recipes to go with my already well-used smoker.Instead I found a mish-mash of recipes that, though they use the smoker, donot really put it to best use. While I'm sure the book will get used, itwon't get nearly as much use as other books on my shelf. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars PLANKING, SMOKING, GRILLING - IT'S ALL HERE!
I'm into planking. It is easy and delicious. Planking Secrets is a favorite new book of mine. But I keep going back to the delicious plank recipes in the BBQ Queens cookbooks. They hooked me on Planked Prawns in Bearnaise Butter in their first book Fish & Shellfish Grilled & Smoked. Now one of my favorites is the Artichoke Pecorino Glazed and Planked Chicken Breasts - these make you swoon - no kidding.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great grill guide for guys!
Guys - don't be frightened off by the "BBQ Queens" title. This is a great guide for men, too.My wife does most of the cooking in the kitchen, but I get to wear the chef's hat on the back deck. This book has helped me do it much more creatively and efficiently.I have only one tiny suggestion -- when lighting a charcoal fire with a chimney, turn it upside down and pack in the crumpled newspapers first -- then set it up and pour in the charcoal -- much easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barbecue-licious!
Okay. I was a complete grill greenhorn. I didn't even know how to light a charcoal chimney. But the Queens took me step by step through the process and, drum roll here, it's easy! And I've made some of the best food I've ever had from this book.My favorites are the grilled romaine with the Caesar dressing. Who knew you could grill lettuce, but it's fabulous. I slathered a steak with Porcini Paste, grilled it, and my oh my!I also tried their smoked tomato and basil butter when I got brave enough to venture into slow smoking. It's easy, too. Now, I'm on to barbecued ribs. If they're as good as the Love Potion for the Swine (don't you just love that?) barbecue sauce, I'll be in hog heaven. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
The new Paul Kirk book "Smoke It!" contains some good recipes, many of which stretch the boundaries that we normally associate with traditional barbecued foods. The text that accompanies each recipe is pure Paul Kirk, but the beautifully styled food photos seem oddly out of place. Anyone who's met Chef Paul knows he's a down-to-earth kind of guy, and it's hard to imagine him serving up this food in the settings portrayed in the photos. Despite this bit of cognitive dissonance, it's a good book, though not as useful as "Paul Kirk's Barbecues Sauces and Rubs". ... Read more
