4-0 out of 5 stars Great for grilling & sauces
This is a nice cookbook for those interested in Asian food. There are many recipes for marinades and sauces, as well as grilled salads, noodles and flatbreads, even Thai quesadillas. Su-Mei Yu, a native of Thailand, does a nice job of explaining methods for grilling and for proper satay. There are recipes from most countries in southeast Asia, Japan, Korea and China. The recipes appear to be rather authentic and easy to follow. There are many good pictures of the food, and she suggests multiple ways to serve particular dishes (for example, with different sauces or sides).
4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious results
My wife and I have been visiting Thai and Vietnamese restaurants for years.I have bought several other cookbooks with little success; The recipes looked good on paper but didn't measure up.I found this book easy to follow. The ingredients were easy to find and the results were great.I would recommend this book to someone who has as least cooked some Asian food.

4-0 out of 5 stars More of Thai Taste than Asian
I buy this book so that I can cook some Southeast Asian food for my Chinese in-laws. I made the Malaysian Beef Kabob, but it turned out more like Thai beef Kabob.Too much emphasis on one ingredient, i.e tumeric, that I have too modify it.I was a little dissapointed. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Through vivid descriptions of restaurants and barbecue joints around the country, stirred together with legends and bits and pieces of barbecue history, Lolis Eric Elie profiles the largely American pastime of barbecuing. Traveling from Texas to the Carolinas, the author chronicles the lore and traditions of the barbecue belt and collects recipes, descriptions and photographs of everything from barbecued cows' faces to pigs' snouts, on his quest to determine barbecue's role in American culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great read.
First off, if you are buying this book expecting a cookbook, don't.Buy it because it is a hell of an entertaining read instead. The book itself is one man's story of traveling the backroads of the US searching for and eating a lot of good barbecue. It is also his opinion of what makes good barbecue - some folks take exception to what his opinions are. This is almost always the way with barbecue. As with religion and politics, an almost certain way to start an argument at a party is do discuss what makes "good barbecue" with others who have their own opinions. If you cannot handle reading another man's opinions, don't bother with this book. For me it proved to be interesting if not educational, and I certainly don't agree with all or even many of his opinions.
4-0 out of 5 stars Barbeque
I have not finished reading the book yet but thus far the author is doing a very thorough and detailed accounting of the origin of barbeque, various styles and some places with good barbeque.
5-0 out of 5 stars A delight - great food, adventure, wonderful pictures and recipes
I had a wonderful experience of things and places I never knew while reading this book. When a book can provide that, I don't know what more you could ask for.My first experience of eating ribs was as a boy at my father's union picnic. When they told me I could eat some ribs, I did not want to eat them.Once I tasted them, I could not get enough. For a while, I looked for every opportunity to find more of this magical delicacy. Then I ran into some tough, dried out, vein laden stuff that put me off it for quite awhile.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't judge this book by the cover !!!!!!!!!!
I had thought this was a great book for learning how to use Dutch Ovens for cooking. Lots of good general info and many nice pics. But, when it comes to the recipes I just don't get how the author can get them so screwed up. As I am new to Dutch Oven cooking I followed the recipes and cooking times precisely. I just wish the author had taken the time to take each recipe and follow it as per the directions to re-test the directions. Many of the cooking times are just plan screwed up and incorrect. As an example, there is no way in this world that the 1 hr cooking time for the sausage and sauerkraut recipe is anywhere near close to correct. Being new, I followed this literally and found that 1 hr is totally inadequate to get the dish to cook thoroughly. Tonite, I am trying the Big Woods Chichen recipe. One hour is completely inadequate for cooking. I am now trying to get the recipe to cook at 2 hrs. I'm sure my rice will be completely overcooked when the chicken is finally done. I am using a Viking professional stove which has been tested and calibrated and am also using a Lodge Dutch oven. Please don't waste your money on this book. It looks good but when you follow the recipes to the letter the results are poor and very disappointing!!!!!!!1

5-0 out of 5 stars Good history and some other ibformation
This book has just saved me from worrying about gifts for my friends and relatives who camp or hunt. I plan on giving this book to many friends. The book is a great mix of history of the dutch ovens and the food cooked in them. I find it well written from the non-expert's view and would make a good book to introduce people to dutch oven cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Dutch Oven...

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cookbook!
There are not enough complimentary words that I know to describe this book. The authors have done a tremendous job of combining a few simple ingredients into what consistantly amounts to great recipes.I love the grilling marinades, breakfasts, picnic fare, and comfort stews.I can honestly say that I have never been dissapointed with anything from this book...ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for those cooking on boats and ....
If youre cooking in a cramped space (boat, travel trailer, mountain cabin or tiny kitchen) and you do not have the time, skills or inclinations [like some people] and want flexibility with menus: buy this book.Thompson & Wheeler have mastered the above and done us all a favor in passing on both their recipes and tips. You can create a gracious meal with a minimum of fuss using Feasts Afloat. Not only are the menus creative and good, they are fast and I use them daily when I am on the run. 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Cookbook
I have used this book for years as the "Yachting Cookbook" and been one of those whotried to locate additional copiesthrough out-of-print searches and in obscure coastal bookstores so I could give it to friends.I was delighted to find it republished. It is a marvelous book filled with delicious ideas for meals that are uncomplicated masterpieces. My husband likes to tell people that he "single-handed" our 49' sailboat around Vancouver Island with a "splendid cook".The credit for the meals goes to this book. Incidently, if you read Wm Buckley's "Racing Through Paradise", Liz Wheeler was the cook on that voyage and many recipes that are praised in that book are included "Feasts Afloat" ... Read more

Who better to know about grilling than firefighters? There is the obvious, but foolish association of cooking with fire and firefighters. The truth is simply that firefighting is a dangerous and stressful job, and during downtime at the station, what better or more relaxing way to spend it than cooking and eating? Joseph T. Bonanno has collected the favorite grilling recipes of firefighters around the country and compiled them in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Playing with fire can be fun
Among my 20+ grilling cookbooks, this is the one to which I always turn when I want to put something good on the table with a minimum of fuss. Joe Bonanno shares with us his experience as a firehouse chef, and that of a number of other firefighters from around the country, in this remarkably good basic book. The recipes are straightforward, using ingredients that are readily available in most places. His chapters on grilling basics and safety tips are very helpful. The collection of marinade recipes is one of the best, and widest-ranging, to be found in the galaxy of grillbooks. The "Mexican Cerveza and Cilantro" marinade contributed by Richard Duden, an NYC Ladderman, is terrific; to get real flavor, be sure to use a lager (Bohemia and Dos Equis come to mind) as called for, not some thin swill like Corona. While one might assume that a firehouse cookbook would focus on beef and pork, the recipes for grilled veggies, fish, shellfish, lamb, chicken, and turkey are varied and uniformly excellent. There are a number of tasty salsa and salad recipes as well. The publisher has made this a particularly useable book by essentially eliminating the bad page turns that plague many otherwise good grill books (notably those of the Jamisons) and by including clear step-by-step instructions for taking the user from prep to palate. (Who really wants to deal with page turns when one's hands have marinade, sauce, or whatever on them?). Joe's Healthy Firehouse Cookbook is also highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You Grill, Girl
I found this boook at some random store and picked it up because it looked fun. I decided to use it as a theme night for my cooking club. I belong to an all girls coooking club and all of our husbands always operate the grill. This gave us some awesome confidence as we stoked the charcoal and made a three course meal. It was such a blast and we loved the campy smore sundaes as dessert. We are planning a You Grill, Girl II club this summer because we had such fun with this book. Just reading it and laughing at all the fun food titles and wording was worth the purchase. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars a girl and her grill
I don't cook a lot of fancy, labor-intensive food.I like being imaginative and speedy in the kitchen, and I usually figure I don't need a book that is going to have me go through 40 steps just to cook a pice of chicken. But despite my wariness of cookbooks, I now own all of Karen Brooks' (and her different partners') food and cocktail books.I never thought I'd be such a fan of...cookbooks?Yup."Dressed to Grill" is as fun to read as it is to use. When it comes to barbecue, women have traditionally taken the roles of preparing side dishes and smiling as they chew charred pieces of red meat.Well, this book makes tending the flames extremely accessible to women, from the basic how-to's and the tips on buying grills to the de-emphasis on meat (and a great low-fat chapter). The snappy writing and graphics that are the trademark of Ms. Brooks' books are present again here.Just broke up with a guy?Look in the "Bonfire of the Miseries" breakup chapter for recipes like Jerk Chicken with Grilled Bananas, Who's Sari Now?, and Chauvinist Pig (all delicious recipes). And for the absolute best versionof a classic:Forget Caesar: A Bang-up Cleopatra Salad. The recipe for Campy S'Mores Sundae with toasted marshmallows is super-easy, tasty, and what the authors call "An urban girl's idea of a Girl Scout campfire dessert experience."Read more

Editorial Review

People have been grilling over open flames as long as there have been flames. But let's face it, roast mastodon doesn't sound half as good as Sage Rubbed Veal Chops with Jerky Sauce. Tastes have changed, and we have gotten a little better at grilling. Specifically, Americans have gotten better--since, after all, grilling is the quintessential American culinary art. Don't believe it? Try finding an order of grilled Mescal Magic Baby Back Ribs next time you're in Paris. Cheryl Alters Jamison and Bill Jamison know this. It is the premise of their book Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good recipes, but close-minded attitude
I highly recommend this book for the recipes, but I was very turned off by the "open grill only" attitude of the authors. The authors believe in charcoal or other open flame methods only, and thumb their nose at Weber-style grills which employ the cover of the grill in cooking.4-0 out of 5 stars Tasty recipes & other stuff, too...
Love this book...well orgnanized by type-of-food. As a beginner/intermediate griller, I get a lot out of it since the book supplements the (savory) recipes with tips and tricks on grilling techniques; e.g vegetable grilling techniques in "Getting Fresh in the Garden," and tips on picking the bestcut of meat in "Serious Steaks."The cider-and-brown-sugar salmon (with spice rub) is one of my favorites...also love their beer-braised onion recipe in the burger section. I'll be heaping burgers high w/ these from now on.5-0 out of 5 stars The true bible of grilling
We have used the recipes in this book for a grilling demonstration day at our store for years. The book contains recipes for out of the ordinary menu items you wouldn't think of cooking on the grill. The last recipe I prepared was for Tortilla and Tomato soup, it was incredible.I'll never be able to eat Campbells again without thinking of these flavors. The other nice thing about this book is that it still covers the basics like dogs and burgers with advice on how to make them the best you've ever tasted.Read more
