5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I have several books on dehydrating your own trail meals and this iseasily the best. It is concise and full of good ideas and recipes. The guidance is flexible enough for the lightweight backpacker or for the canoe or pack mule traveler. For example, some of the recipes call for a dutch oven (too bulky and heavy for the lightweight backpacker) and others are suitable for a one pot meal (ideal for the lightweight backpacker).
5-0 out of 5 stars Trail Food Drying
Good book about the subject. No frills, but lots of good info in a small package.

5-0 out of 5 stars straightforward drying advice
I've had this book for a few years now, and have read it cover to cover several times. It gives good advice on how to dry everything from plain vegetables to your leftover dinner.I even started to dehydrate my own eggs, and let me tell you they come back wonderfully.Great book that will have you tossing aside those $6.00 nasty premade meals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dutch Oven cooking at it's best
For me as a German "Dutch Oven Lover" this cookbook is an easy and efficient way of learning how to cook with a Dutch Oven; the recipes are explained in detail and easy to change with other ingredients that are handy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Too Funny
I havn't had the opertunity to try the recipes yet but this cookbook is a great read. The recipes all look basic enough with a good mix of simple supermarket ingrediants as well as wild game recipes.I have about a 1/2 dozen dutch oven cookbooks and these are by far the best read so far.Unfortunatly despite the listing this is *not* spiral bound and wont stay open while cooking hands free. The second book, "more Cee dub's Dutch Oven and other camp cookin" is still spiral bound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best ever cookbook!
Never have I laughed so much as I did reading this cookbook. The stories are great and the recipes are even better.I used this book extensively while camping this year and it was the first time I ever used a DO(dutch oven). When my very picky middle daughter started looking for seconds and thirds at our meals, I knew I had learned a good thing. If anyone is just starting out or even is already using a dutch oven, this book is a must have! (Try the blackberry dump cake, I had'em licking out the dutchy!!)You will enjoy and use this book again and again! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We want More Cee Dub
After reading Cee Dub's first book and then his new Second book, we can only conclude that it is a must for the camp cook. The recipes are delicious, healthy and easy to produce.Cee Dub also indicates how tospice each recipe up with our own preferred tastes. His tall tales makeyou want to read the book in one sitting. However the recipes make youwant to start cooking.Having lived near the area Cee Dub refers to in histravels, I can imagine seeing him out there on the river and in thebackcountry where I work and play.Cee Dub gives little tid- bits of hintsto make every camp cook more seasoned and makes every upcoming trip a featto look forward to.His stories of "pards" gone by touch thesoul of anyone who enjoys good times, friends and family.I would like toknow the "real story" behind some of the antics going on inCeedub' s camps.I doubt people would ever want to leave with such agracious host, great cook, andeven better story teller.Keep up thegreat work, Cee Dub, we will never put you down! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids and parents!
This book gave me a lot of good ideas when I took my daycare kids camping this summer. They liked most of the recipes, but we tailored some of them to their liking. It was a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Beginner book for Campfire Cooking
A good beginner book to give basic recipes and ideas for cooking on the campfire. The book does what I imagine it set out to do, giving starting point for people doing outdoor cooking with younger children such as parents, scout leaders, or teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars just right
This is a fun book for kids, and has a lot of common sense easy recipes they can follow. It starts off by teaching the basics of building a campfire, especially the safety involved, and putting out the fire. It has sections on cooking on a grill, cooking in a pouch, and on a stick. If you havne't doen these it is hard to describe, since they do not mean an animal on a spit here. This is good for cub scouts or other youth groups to teach basic cooking skills to kids in the woods. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Complicated
All the recipes are pretty advanced (and expensive).I'd like to see more easy dishes that don't take 5 hours to prepare and $100 per oven.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook
This is well organized and appealing book for outdoor cooker. If you have cast iron dutch oven, you have to have this one.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great receipes, assumes basic skill however
I have been collecting and trying dutch oven receipes for some time and found the content of the Outdoor Dutch Oven book very solid. Some receipes are too involved for outdoor trips, but would work just fine in the kitchen.I originally checked the book out of the library, but was so impressed I thought it deserved to be purchased. The comments regarding no instruction on dutch oven skills are valid. You'll want another resource for that. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not only basic but for the experinced also
I am not a big fan of Cliff , but having said that, this book is one of his best. Many great tips are given and will keep food on the table/lap on those long trips.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Amount of Unique Information
Although I found a lot of this book to be useful, I was most impressed with the author's system to conserve fuel and speed cooking time while cooking outdoors in colder climates.

5-0 out of 5 stars great basic book
This is a great basic book 70 page book on this subject. I have about 10 different books on camp cooking, and this one covers many areas of outdoor cooking including camp stoves, fire making, selecting the right pots and pans. How to pack lightly is covered as well as sources to find things. Then there are the recipes which all work great and tste delicious. The writer has a homey style that is very comfortable to read, kind of like an old friend or uncle explaining things to you.The book is affordable. The interior illustrations are nice too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars vintage recipes
I highly reccommend this charming book produced by the folks at the National Forest Service non-profit museum in Montana, and chock full of recipes from forest ranger districts all over the country, celebrating 100 years of service. So it is filled with historic stories and photos of early ranger camps and cooks. Some of these vintage recipes have been around for awhile, and are very nostalgic. Most recipes list the contributing ranger, and their district.Spiral binding makes it easy to cook with, as you can keep the book open and flat on the page you need. All cookbooks should be made like that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I've reviewed many books for both my site and Amazon and this one is a real gem. I was a little skeptical at first but the recipes were great. The food tasted delicious when we took it on our trips.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Really Helpful Guide
It was really helpful for me in pre-preparing easy to transport tasty meals. I have used a few other backpacking cookbooks but found this one the most helpful. I really loved the Sierra Spaghetti and the summer lasgna. I even make them to eat at home. I thought all the meals when rehydrated tasted amazingly fresh. I was really happy with my purchase and use of this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough variety
This was the first backcountry cookbook I bought. I was looking for recipes that could be mostly assembled at home, would be lightweight to transport, and were easy to cook over a backpacking stove.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Fundamental Book
Cooking in fire and coals wasn't important to me until I ate in a humble farmhouse kitchen in the mountains of the Veneto a few years ago.The flavors of woodsmoke in the roast squab and the wild-mushroom risotto were magical. They transformed simple, lean ingredients into something amazingly rich, complex, and soul-stirring.I was haunted for months after by the memory of those flavors. Then I had one of the greatest meals of my life at Chez Panisse, which featured flame-broiled rabbit sausages and coal-roasted lamb, which was finshed in the kitchen fireplace in a puff of rosemary smoke. From my vantage in the dining room I watched the utterly simple preparation, an immemorial process, and vowed to learn whatever I could about hearth cooking. In lieu of a grandmother with traditional hearth-cooking skills, I had books, and The Magic of Fire continues to stand out above the others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perceptive, literate, and useful...the trifecta.
This is written by a man who thoroughly understands his subject. The well-produced, beautiful book will take you from being the owner of a fireplace (or, for that matter, any contained open fire) and make you into an accomplished open-fire cook. Rubel shows clearly that open-hearth cooking is not only an old-fashioned way to cook, but a method which offers unparalleled control of the cooking process, sufficient to entice those without any interest in its history. Having lived for 5 years "in 1867" in a one-room apartment on Boston's Beacon Hill, lighting by candle and oil and heating and cooking on an open, Rumford fireplace, I think I can offer a unique perspective on Mr. Rubel's methods and practice. Buy this book--you will not regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A magical presentation of an advanced yet natural topic
The Editorial Review provided above by Amazon is a very good technical description of the book contents; much practical and detailed information is indeed contained on this advanced cooking technique.I say "advanced" rather than "primitive" because open fire cooking offers a much greater variety of possibilities for combinations of convective, radiative, and thermal processing of food.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Just another gourmet cookbook
I was hoping that this would be a more useful camping cookbook. It is really a gourmet cookbook that tries to be a camping cookbook by using"sierra cup" as a unit of measurement (a "sierra cup" is a fancy backpacking cup purchased at trendy outdoor stores, and holds about 9 ounces)and by illustrating it with camping pictures and artwork. The ingredients for most of the recipes require access to gourmet and specialty stores.
5-0 out of 5 stars Move Over Wolfgang Puck
For those of us who like to cook, camp and eat well, this book has no peer. If you love to cook anyway, this is the book foryou. If you don't, stick with the premade stuff you buy at the sporting goods stores as the home prep is critical and time consuming. For me, it was heaven. And the rewards paid off in spades at the campsite because you merely "just add water" to create meals worthy of the finest home dinner party (as proof - we're home and I made one of the recipes for a dinner party this week!).Thank you Rick and Hal for changing the face of camp food -- and for your bright, witty text that made it even more of a pleasure.I can't wait for the sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gourmet Ultralight Backpackers Rejoice
The fact that everything tastes good outdoors has kept campers eating shoe leather and birdseed for years. This is for the serious back country gourmet who will go just about anywhere and do anything to eat well once they get there. Be prepared to break out the food dehydrator and camping oven. However, recipes like steamed Chinese dumplings and "The Most Dangerous Cake in the Wilderness" are good enough to serve at home. The book is lightweight at 17 ounces, yet packed with tasty ideas. "Leave No Crumbs" is the best kind of camp companion: it kept us well fed and laughing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hungry Backpacker
This is a must have book for the backpacker. It is full of great recipes and cooking hints.I would recommend this to anyone packing thier own food.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with June
I like my backcountry meals to come together easily at home from easily purchased ingredients, to be very lightweight, and to cook quickly in camp so they don't waste time and fuel. At the same time, I can't stand most packaged meals and find that simply adding boiling water to a packaged meal yields only UFOs: Unidentifiable (and inedible) Floating Objects. I'm not interested in wasting time, money, and weight on being "gourmet" in the backcountry. *The Well-Fed Backpacker* by June Fleming strikes the perfect balance for me. For her recipes that I like the best, the shopping is easy, the preparation at home and in camp is easy, the weight is light (especially Cheesy Bacospuds), and the taste is good to great. This is the most practical recipe book for backpackers that I know of.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Is The One
I went over the backpacking cookbooks offered on Amazon using the extremely useful viewable pages, and selected the three I thought were best. Of the three I purchased, the Well-Fed-Backpacker is notably more informative. It is in that class of books known as perennial favorites, first published in 1976 and still a very strong book today in its third edition. If you are buying one or three as I did, be sure to include this book. ... Read more

I used this book for the first time this past weekend. Everything was delicious and very easy to make : San Francisco Cioppino, Cheesy Biscuits one night, and pancakes made with the multipurpose baking mix the next morning. I am dying to try more recipes when we go again in three weeks.
5-0 out of 5 stars For both the hardened camper and the novice; for the camping trip and the backyard grill; for the basics and the super-spreads
This book received high marks from me before I even opened it--it has a compact format and a sturdy paperback cover, perfect for packing in your camping gear without excess weight or bulk.By compact, I am referring only to the cover dimensions; this is a thick recipe-packed book that is well worth the cover price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff!
I have quite a few cookbooks, and even more camping books. I would rate this as one of the better books I have read about cooking in the woods. The instructions are easy to follow and the recipes are delicious. There are about 200 tasty recipes total, and he uses camp stoves, dutch ovens, reflector ovens, and the fire itself. The book has advice on pans and what to pack. He shows you how to cook the meals for big groups and small alike. And there are plenty of fun recipes for kids and scouts in here as well. He shows you how to cook in foil to cut down on dishes and pans, and other timesavers.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my first pick, but may be good supplment for hikers.
After reading many reviews, I purchased this book, BACKCOUNTRY COOKING, and THE BACK-COUNTRY KITCHEN by Teresa Marrone.I can't help but compare the two books, so my opinion on this book is relative to my opinion of the other.
5-0 out of 5 stars Eat Well
This book has a good amount (it's not War and Peace) of recipes that are tasty and easy for backpacking! Also a chapter or two of good advice concerning food in general...how to pack it, what kinds of things work, making your own dried foods, etc. Each meal has a chapter, like Breakfast, Lunch, whatever...there are no-cook things, all the way to fresh baked bread on the trail and pizza.Yum!(well no I haven't done the pizza or bread but I'm going to try it since they sound so good! And easy too)

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly recipes
If you are looking for a book full of recipes, then this is the book for you.I would say they make up about 80% of the book. The first part is about gathering ingredients and there is a little wisdom about takingprecautions against animals. I got this book to complete the series, but Idon't really like to read a bunch of recipes, but someday I might. ... Read more

It is way past time for more healthy alternatives to meat dishes for people in the backcountry or in the bush. This book gives some really good and heathy choices.Semper Fi

5-0 out of 5 stars Lipsmackin' Vegetarian Backpackin' - a meatless collection
I really enjoyed the first book by Tim and Christine Conners and now the couple has come out with a second book in the Lipsmackin' Backpackin' series that is completely vegetarian. Recipes include Fabulous Fry Brownies, Miso Madness, Algonquin Apple Leather and a series of bread recipes that would make any backpacking trip more enjoyable. There are great dishes for each meal time and some wonderful GORP ideas. The book has a range of drinks, fruit leathers and decadent desserts. I was pleasantly surprised when I found a recipe for Coleslaw which is dehydrated at home and rehydrated on the trail. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for trail food and not just for vegetarians!
Christine and Tim Conners did a great job putting this book together. Not just a collection of appealing trail food recipes, it gives tips on where to buy ingredients as well as other items of interest to the backwoods hiker/camper.I was privileged to be asked to contribute some of my own trail food ideas to this book.In my discussions with Christine, she told me that a lot of long distance hikers didn't like to use a dehydrator - something I can't identify with since my dehydrator has been invaluable in preparing for backwoods treks.Christine included a humorously written article about the benefits of the dehydrator. Many of the recipes include short notes from the contributors on the recipe and its use on the trail. If I had to pick one negative of the book, it would be that the title includes the word "vegetarian".I would think this may turn off the meat eaters. The book will appeal to all paddlers and trail hikers who want good tasting, unique, yet easy-to-prepare food. I own several trail food cookbooks, including the Conners other book, Lipsmackin' Backpackin'.I tend to reach for Lipsmackin' first when I am preparing for a trip and now I'm sure their new book will get just as much use from me. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy camping recipes
I have made 5 of the recipes in this book so far and have enjoyed them all.It covers all varieties of camp cooking from pie irons to dutch ovens to foil packets to the grill. The recipes I chose required no pre-cooked meat as stated in a previous review, and I have only seen a couple of recipes that do.The recipes are easy to assemble and some can be prepared to marinate before you leave home, making cooking on the road even easier.I found this a good basic campfire cookbook that gives you a little bit of everything and every campfire cooking method.I would recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great if everything is pre-cooked....
Most of the recipes call for prepared meat, not too helpful if you want to actually "cook" on the fire. A few clever things, but I'm returning it, not very useful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Creative ideas for camping
This really is a cool book, with all sorts of ideas for cooking in the outdoors, many that I had never thought of, (like cooking eggs and bacon in a bag stuck on a stick over the fire). The first part of the book talks about outdoor cooking at home, and has some neat frugal ideas for outdoor parties, then the book delves into camping for a chapter or so.(Dian has some really good organizational ideas for large and small groups.)The last 3/4 of the book is devoted to camp cooking. The ideas for cooking over the fire are really cool, and for someone who has done only a bit of camping and car camping at that, really unusual. However, if you like your food fresh and not from a can or packet, the recipes are pretty useless. Here are your cakes made from cake mix and canned fruit, casseroles with cream of whatever soup and all sorts of seasoning packets. If this sort of thing does'nt bother you, then the book should be perfect, if you're a health nut like me, it will.

3-0 out of 5 stars some innovative ideas
This book had many neat ideas to try with the kids while camping.I learned much about cooking actually in the coals and also using the dutch oven.I would reccomend this book to anyone new to camping or to intermediate campers who want to try new ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideas galore to save money
I first read this book as a teenage boy scout. I had camped once a month for many years and had tried all kinds of tricks to save money when camping, make your own gear, fun outdoor recipes, etc. but this book had tons of new ideas I had never heard of. 20 years after the first edition of this book means the author has updated it to our times, but it still great. This has always been indespensable to me. It really has made camping more fun and I reccommend it to anyone that takes kids camping, but you don't have to have them to try this stuff. Read more
