4-0 out of 5 stars good but could have been better
I really like the upbeat personality of Racheal Ray as she finds some good food deals here and abroad. I really wanted this book because I love to travel and thought this would be a great companion for when I am in the locales covered. The problem that I have truly with the book are minimal. My expectations were higher, I thought that there would be more pictures of what she ate, and more of the scenery she took in while travelling. I didnt realize that most of the book would be a written commentary on each place the food was at, and how she knew this or that patron, a bio on the owners, or why she chose the spot. I liked all this but I really wanted to see the food and (even though this would eventually be inaccurate) how much her total tabs came out to for each meal. I did appreciate that she chooses diverse cuisine and the standard favorites. She included some recipes which were decent enough but not great pics of the food to accompany it with. For example I loved her Portland Maine lunch on tv- this large, juicy lobster roll that she had trouble picking up with huge pieces of meat, but in the book she just mentioned that for lunch she had one helluva lobster roll. Another example is the enchilada and eggs shehad for breakfast in Laguna Beach, the book shows a small picture of it with the recipe, but on the show it looked mouth watering.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I love this book.I enjoy traveling and eating at new and different places. This book was enjoyable to read and informative.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I was so happy to receive this book.It has good information for places I can visit when I do get time to travel.I watch Rachael Ray's $40 a day show often and enjoy it alot.Food is one of the reasons I love to travel. It is fun to see new places and try some of the foods in different parts of the world. These little out of the way places are so fun to read about, and reading about places near where I live is also great.I enjoy Rachael's humor and it is nice to see someone with so much energy.I recommend the book and also the show.It was definitely worth the money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very well done!
This cookbook is the answer for busy moms everywhere. It not only gives delicious recipes but also helpful tips and information on how to shop, plan and cook more efficiently. Even though it is a "cooking ahead" cookbook, it can also be used as a regular cookbook since each recipe includes instructions for making and eating the dishes right away. This makes it an ultra-flexible, useful book. I will definitely be using it alot now that school and busy schedules are starting again! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Update the software!
As an instructor I felt the book was very good, but the students could not use the software on excel 97 or above. It was really frustrating, and I will not use it next semester.

4-0 out of 5 stars I think this is an excellent book for chefs to be.
This is an excellent book for chefs to be.It gives in detail how to design a decent menu. But the price I paid for it is way to much. I picked up the book in our school bookstore, Lambton College, in Sarnia, OntarioCanada. It cost me 102.95 plus GST Tax. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Buy For Anyone Who Wants To Find Where Parisians Dine
This book reads like a novel. Each section introduces the reader to the charms and peculiarities of the neighborhoods of Paris, followed by vivid descriptions of the history and atmosphere of the most interesting bistros and the best fare offered by each. This is not your typical tourist guide.I loved the fact that it is a slim book, packed with information, which can easily fit in a purse or pocket. The authors have focusssed on the bistroswhere Parisians find the best food for the best value.I loved the photographs, which capture the charm of Paris and made me yearn for a return visit.

5-0 out of 5 stars So good I can taste it
This is THE book for lovers of Paris cafe culture, the Gat Parisienne of Toulouse and Degas and young Picasso, the smoke-filled existentialist redoubts of postwar angst and Sartre, the whole range of places, from tucked-away local digs where shirtsleeve workers take their lunch served by big-armed mamas to the ritzy-boulevard tourist traps, all the color, sounds, palate treats and eye treats you could possibly want, the stuff that brought you to Paris in the first place, are what Christine and Dennis Graf have confected for you, and not only that but they tell you how it's done, how the cafe "works," with the local body language and recognitions and intricate gestural vocabulary and what the places mean to les parisiens indigenes as well as the reverent foreigner drop-in. It's the book to have hidden in your pocket when you enter, the treasure-hunt clue that pointed you there but remains carefully concealed so that the habitus will think you just naturally gravitated to the place or else were astrally tossed there by astounding good luck. The book is worth five, ten times its purchase price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than a travel guide
Much more than a standard travel guide, this book is a work of art. It's beautifully written and sprinkled with entertaining vignettes and charming photographs. The authors have departed from the beaten path and searched Paris to find a select group of Bistros, the kind the average tourist hopes to find but rarely does. They are all unique, but they all have some things in common: appealing atmosphere, creative menus and outstanding value-- and they all make me anxious to return to Paris! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but hard to use
This book has a TON of drinks, but there are no color photos and the drinks are arranged by the name of the drink, not the type of alcohol or main ingredients.Plus, as a paperback, you have to hold it open to use it- not very handy.I probably wouldn't buy it again.

2-0 out of 5 stars ok
I was not impresed with this book. While everything is sorted it is still kind of piled together(small print and crapping newprint paper with no space between anything). I looked up some of my favorite and the recipes were messed up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very good for beginners
This book lists drinks only by their main alcohol ingredient ONLY. Not very helpful if you don't know the drink's main alcohol ingredient. What kind of bartender bible doesn't have a recipe for a cosmopolitan? Is an alphabetical list of all the dinks in the book too much to ask? Every time I use this book I get pissed off. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ATaste of Heaven
After many trips to Maui over the years we finally tried Hali'Imaile General Store. It was my Birthday and wanted to try a new place. What a treat! The service was the best Joan was our fantastic Server and made us feel like Royalty. Her suggestions made our dinner the very best it could be. Since that first trip we have had many, many dinners and taken our Clients and family there for dinner, we get such rave reviews we seldom take new Clients anywhere else except when in a hurry on time or for a little more casual bite we go to "that other place" they have ribs too! We enjoy the fantastic variety of foods. I fell in love with the fishcakes at first bite had to go back the next day and ordered them just for me NO!sharing. My family and friends know if you want to please me with a "gift" a dinner gift certicaate works.Where else would I want to go. One of my favorite deserts Pina Colada Cheesecake this was the most Heavenly taste. I tell people when we take them to the Restraunt its WONDERFUL and still they cant believe how good the food and service is. Mahalo for all the great times we have had at your Place and they other place too! Bev & Joe you have really done a great job keep up your part and we'll keep up ours "eatting at your places with family, friends and clients" My best Friend gave me a gift certificate after 2 trips to the restraunt in a week we had to go back to Portland, Joan sujested since I love the food why not take a cookbook back so I did.My daughter who loves cooking stole my book. So had to buy a new. Need to be able to get a fishcake fix. Now after several more trips we now live here and eat at both of your places alot. Have to go to Joes for Crab Dip. They to have a great staff but there is no place like Hali'Imaile General Store.I flew to PDX on business 15 times this year always tell people on the flight they have to go eat at both your places it never suprises me when we run into those people at dinner. Now I'm hungry I think I'll go make reservation for dinner tonite!!!!! See you at Hali'Imaile General Store we are the couple at the table by the window! Agian Much Mahalo Bev & Joe You have done a great job! Maui has alot of fine Dinnng and truly this is our Favorite!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful as it is good!
The Portuguese Bean Soup recipe is really the best I've ever had.5-0 out of 5 stars WowWee Maui
I purchased this book several months ago in anticipation of hosting a baby shower with a luau theme.I spent several months agonizing over which of the many amazing dishes I should make.I settled on the soba noodle salad, pork tenderloin with pineapple chutney (I omited the mushroom polenta) Paella and pineapple pie. It was amazing.although the recipes involve a boatload of chopping, and in some cases, a lot of ingredients, most can be made one or two days ahead.Anyone interested in fresh, complex flavors and textures should buy this book.My guests ran the gamet of tastes and ages, but I ended up with very few leftovers.I am a cookbook affeciando and I say this is a Great Great Book.I'd even fly to Maui to have them cook for me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I STILL love it
I bought this in 2003. Is vertical food out of fashion? Not so trendy anymore? Who cares. I think everyone likes a beautiful presentation and the recipes in this book are not only lovely to look at, they are actually good. The recipes would be good even if they weren't "stacked". Plus, the book inspires you to be creative and think of variations. I still love this book and refer to it often. I wish there was Volume II.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saw it on Food Network... bought it

This cookbook is an invaluable resource for my catering department as well as a basis for recipes for my culinary class. They are easy to follow and have both Metric and U.S. measurements for ease of conversions.5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough, easy to read and easy to follow cookbook.
The recipes in this cookbook are all prepared in quantities of 50.It contains both US Standard and Metric weights and measures. The dishes are basic and easy to prepare. This is very important when you are dealing with feeding a large number of people.I have personally used many recipes from this book to serve over 200 people. All the dishes were well received. They turned out exactly as they should and the cookbook even has additional information to aid in figuring how much of each ingredient to buy. When it comes to cooking in bulk, this book is - hands downs - my favorite. ... If you are planning on joining the "Chef Ranks", then this is a must have book for you.I have been a Chef for 40 years and I have used this book as a training tool for new Chef that I have training. You will find it up-to-day and comprehensive in content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for culinary students
This book gives great information on preparing and handling food properly and of course the most important is how to store food before and after cooking. This book was a requirement for class but another book I purchase was not a requirement but I thought was extremely helpful was The Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam. This book had very similar questions to what's in class and on the exam and it help me pass with high grades.Thank you Dr. Leonardi and Ms. Heilman

4-0 out of 5 stars If you want to know the hows and whys, this is a good book
This book is required for the Culinary school that I attend and I have found it extremely helpful. As its title implies, it is for the serious student and a good reference book to keep because it identifies foods, explains proper handling, storage, and preparation tecnique, and alsoincludes recipes. If you just want to throw together a recipe, buy a BettyCrocker cookbook. If you want to do it the professional way, buy thisbook. ...
