Born in Louisiana and at home in Tennessee, author Michael Lee West makes any old body feel downright welcome at her kitchen table. 5-0 out of 5 stars My Most-Used Cookbook
This book is super, it's full of great stories about wonderful food. I've got a ton of cookbooks and this is the one I use the most. My favorite recipes are the Sweet Potato Souffle, Mashed Potato salad and Egg Salad redipes. I get compliments every time I serve these dishes to people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Feast for the Famished Southern or otherwise
Fair warning! If you are on a diet or trying to lose weight, this book is lethal. My stars, what a feast of food memoirs complete with rich and tempting recipes! And how I would love some of that coconut cake that emerges from an eight day recipe. 4-0 out of 5 stars talented novelist delivers delectable, engaging memoir
The author of three marvelous books about eccentric and defiant Southern women, Michael Lee West has concocted a winning recipe of down-home cooking and family history in a charming memoir/cookbook, "Consuming Passions."At peace with her love of food and proud of her women-centered family, West promotes food as the sustenance of all that is worthwhile in life. Her anecdotal style sparkles and her recipes are not only provocative, but understandable, even for amateur Yankee cooks and other such timid kitchen souls.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Another Great book from the Pardeys.
5-0 out of 5 stars Right On Target!
"Larry came below shivering and blue-lipped.I got him out of his wet clothes, warmed some freshwater so he could wipe down, and got out his dry clothes. But it wasn't until he had had some hot, solid food that he started to warm up and stop shivering" (p. 357); the real situations experienced during extended cruising and appropriate responses are the focus of this comprehensive book which contains relevant advice on nearly every cruising situation imaginable, with a strong emphasis on how those situations impact the crew.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised!!!
A couple of months ago, I attended a seminar taught by Lin & Larry called Confident Cruising. What a treat to meet this inspiring couple!I have offshore dreams myself and since I know I will be in charge of my own galley, I bought The Care & Feeding of Sailing Crew.I thought it would have a few recipes and hints on how to store food.Little did I know that the book is so much more:You travel with Lin & Larry on a 45 day passage from Japan to Canada and during the passage, Lin teaches you everything you need to know about provisioning, food care & storage, galley layout, cabin care - the list goes on and on.I haven't finished the book yet - I'm with them on day 30.They are eating mostly canned food now but Lin is still preparing great meals!I love Lin's style of writing - you really feel like she's talking to you over a cup of tea.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
If you can stand the heat is a really interesting book that tells you the lives of a few chefs that they invterviewed along with a few recipes. I read that it provided insight into the kitchen and things like that, but I hardly saw that going on. Luckily though, there stories and what they had to say were interesting enough. Recommended for all cooks looking to work in a kitchen.

4-0 out of 5 stars business and recipes
There are any number of books on the market that purport to tell you how to start and run your own restaurant. They tend to make up in enthusiasm what they lack in rigor in depicting a slice of the business world that is, at best, quirkily unpredictable. But If You Can Stand the Heat: Tales from Chefs and Restaurateurs is an exception.
5-0 out of 5 stars Standing In the Heat
This book is an awesome resource for people who hope to become cooks or chefs. In it you will read about the lives of people who started out doing something they thought they loved and then just decided that they wanted to cook and ended up becoming great at it. Then there is also the stories of people who had an intense desire to cook and had to struggle just to get someone in the culinary indusstry to even look at them. The people in this book either own their own restaurants or are working in the most top quality food establishments there is. It evens gives some of these chefs most favorite recipes. It gives you alot of valuable informaiton from the top schools to attend,to what can shut down a first time restaurant opener's establishment. It's a great book to read and it's guaranteed to lead to great success! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of book with a heavy wieght!
Since this is a text book for me who is taking culinary classes at a local College, I am not really qualified except that I have worked with food for the past 6 years and love anything that will improve my cooking skills. This book has given me enough information into the science of how and why we do what we do in cooking. It is interesting reading, full of good information and the workbook is a must if taking classes. The only thing I can say negative about the book, is that it's not bedtime reading.Since I do drag it to bed with me and read for hours, I'm always looking for new positions to get into the make it more comfortable.

5-0 out of 5 stars good job
Delivery was made without any trouble or delay and book was well packed .Thank you very much

5-0 out of 5 stars it always comes up with the food!
As someone already mentioned, it's a pity you do not have a six star rating. This is probably the best cooking book, professional and other that I have come across. It's accurate and reliable, and mostly it seems to cover everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for students
Being a swiss chef who went to school with the old Pauli I was surprised to see this new Edition based on North American Laws and guide lines. Not only does it cover Nutrition, kitchen Managment and basic history of cooking - it also contains a great Lexicon of most commenly used ingredients. There are also many basic recepies included and a great chapter on sauces, soups and basic cooking techniques - a must buy for all seriously interested cooking students. Just alone because it is soo much easier to read than the proffessional chef...

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The best thing about this cookbook is that the quantities of ingredients are all set.You don't need to double or triple the recipe.I bought this cookbook especially for today b/c I was in charge of preparing a lunch for 20 people as part of an all day workshop at work.I made the cream of broccoli soup, the black bean soup, and the greek salad pitas. The only recipe I would make again would be the greek salad - which was wonderful. The cream of broccoli soup was so bland that I was desparately tried to fix it.What saved me was that I created a red pepper pesto type paste to add to each bowl.Without it, I didn't even want to serve the soup. The black bean soup lacked luster as well.I was not proud to serve either soup.Like I mentioned earlier the large quantitiy recipes made grocery shopping and preparation easy. But who cares if it is easy to make mediocre soups - no thanx.I am disappointed in Moosewood. Also I specifically chose two soup recipes that the cookbook raved about as 'a time-honored favorite' and 'one of the most poplular'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy Cooking Vegetarian Style!
This is the ultimate book on cooking vegeterian entrees. It's based on volume but don't let that scare you away. With a few simple reductions you are on your way to preapring some of the most mouth watering, vegetarianitems from the tried and true recipes of the Moosewood Restaurant.4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Investment
I originally bought this book for the kitchen at our organic farm, where we regularly feed >15 people a day. After reading it myself, I wanted a copy for home too. Anyone who's vegetarian will need to cook in quantity atsome point (dinner parties, etc.), and this book makes it easy to do so. Nomore multiplying like crazy and ending up with haphazard results. I alsoliked that the ingredients were given by weight, which makes it much easierto measure out. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Maps?
The main reason I purchased the book was because I wanted the Hotel locations show on road maps. There isn't a single map in the entire book. For some reason I assumed this aide would be included in the printed version. In larger cites this would be a great help as I try to avoid going out of my way when traveling to find a place to stay. Its basically an outdated printed version of the Web site. Great to have along if your travel plans change and you have no internet connection but of limited use if you do.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Start
We used this book (along with Petswelcome and the Internet) to help find accommodations for ourselves and our rambunctious German Shepherd puppy during a move across country. It was extremely helpful in finding possible places to stay in cities that we were not familiar with.Of course, we called all of the places to confirm that they took pets, the rules and the extra fees, before making a decision on any one place. Each place we ended up at was pretty well described in the book and our dog loved his first road trip!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide with Free On-Line Updates
We use the book often, and successfully because we take the authors' advice which is to call ahead and confirm that the property still takes pets. We also go to their website (www.petsonthego.com) to check for updates as well. This is the only pet travel guide, that we know of, to offer both a print version and online version for updates. It really makes it easy for us.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent general textbook from the Irish Alice Waters. Buy It.
The `ballymaloe cooking school cookbook' by school co-owner and Irish TV cooking show host, Darina Allen is my second volume in my search for the perfect Irish cookbook. As it turns out, this very heavy and long (639 pages) book is much, much more than a book about Irish cooking, as well it should be, since it is comparable to the Culinary Institute of America's textbook, `The New Professional Chef'. That is, it is a general textbook for essentially all styles of European and American cooking, with a tendency to include more Irish recipes than you would expect from a French or Italian cooking textbook. In fact, a quick browse reveals recipes from around the world, many with an attribution to a close Darina Allen friend, such as Marcella Hazan.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent modern cuisine
The recipes are excellent and interesting, the commentary is informative and educational. The emphasis on seasonality is a good reminder of the real growing cycle of food, and the fairly simple treatment of ingredients highlights the flavor of well grown ingredients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Precise
The manual has been helpful to me in figuring out where to start and the best order in which to proceed.Although it can be a bit dry at times, being a textbook manual, I have very little complaints.Very useful just for the start-up cost list alone.Katz really leaves no stone unturned, I have been carrying this around and making notes left and right. Also, has been helpful in bolstering my confidence before heading into the foray of contractors, plumbers and designers.I will be curious to see how I feel about this book in a year from now, but at this time in the planning stages, it is very reassuring and insightful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for a Zero start-up !
I strongly recommend this book for those who tend to open up a restaurant with a little Food & Beverage / Administration experience and have many ideas but has difficulties in putting things together and most importantly;who are under the influence of friends, family, etc.Read more
