4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Author on his Adopted Speciality
There is something droll about seeing Pierre Franey, the former executive chef of La Pavillion, classically trained French native doing books of quick cooking. It suddenly started making sense to me when I read that Franey was employed as the head of the Howard Johnson's research and development kitchen in the 60's before going to his gig as a culinary columnist for the New York Times. The credentials of this chef, along with my interest in preparing good food quickly lead me to buy this book shortly after it was published in 1989.5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook
I love this book, and I'm about to order one for my daughter. I've used the book for over five years and have tried about half therecipes. All are consistently good and are quick and fairly simple. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Always Find What I Want To Know
I got this book for a present about six months ago and can't stop picking it up.I heard this author on the radio recently and she was just as engaging and informative talking about burgers as she was about wine-and all the info she discussed is in this book, so I figure it's a darn good deal.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tips and Techniques to Boost Basic Cooking Skills.
"The Food Lover's Tiptionary" is a collection of tips and techniques on basic culinary subjects, organized alphabetically. I believe there are about 500 separate entries, but the book doesn't say. The 6,000 tips referred to on the book's cover fall under theentries. The book covers specific foods, general food categories, kitchen utensils, and culinary techniques. Food entries are presented in the following format: Tidbit (either a definition or food trivia), Purchasing, Equivalents, Storing, Preparing, Cooking, and/or Using. Some of the food entries are accompanied by short recipes. The formats of other types of entries vary, and may be best described by example: The entry for "Cookies" provides extensive instructions on making dough, preparing pans, baking, finishing, and storing. "Ice" gives general information and instructions for various ice cubes for different occasions. "Baked Goods" includes general baking tips. "Pasta Shapes" describes 65 shapes. Food quotes by recognizable names are scattered throughout the book, wherever the subject of the quote is found. There are several charts in the book, such as metric conversion, oven temperature equivalents, and pan sizes. And there is a Recipe Index in the back, for the over 100 short recipes found throughout the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks again, Sharon Tyler Herbst
I've long been a fan of Sharon Tyler Herbst's books (have "The Ultimate A to Z Bar Guide," the "New Food Lover's Companion, the "Wine Lover's Companion" and "The Ultimate Guide to Pitcher Drinks").So, when I recently received the new edition of her "Tiptionary" I eagerly started thumbing through it.This one's absolutely fabulous, and is also arranged in an easy A to Z format, which is one of the reasons I like this author's books so much!My new hubby's a hamburger fanatic (I'll convert him, yet;) so imagine my delight when I found over two pages of info on the subject. Now I cook his burgers just the way he likes them.Of course, I've found oodles of other subjects that make ME happy, like corn. The "Tiptionary" gave me dozens of hints on how to buy, store and cook it, and it has a super recipe for "Grilled Corn Off the Cob," which my spouse loves! And that brings me to another favorite feature of this book--it has dozens of short recipes scattered throughout. Not to mention that it tells you what to do with leftovers of whatever food you're looking up.Add to that loads of charts (temperature, measurements, pan sizes, pasta sizes, etc.), and you've got a book that every cook should have.Thank you, Sharon Tyler Herbst, for another great one! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook
In "The Ultimate Cooking with 4 Ingredients" author Jean Coates treats the reader to a plethora of simple, yet tasty, recipes. This is a particularly great cookbook for those with little cooking experience or for someone who wants to put together a balanced, healthy, home cooked meal without a lot of fuss. The instructions for preparation of each dish could not be easier. If you are used to the books with three or four paragraphs of preparation instructions you will be pleasantly surprised to find that these recipes can all be completed with only three to four simple steps.Read more

Decent starting point for cooking-impaired college students if they don't mind eating eggs and potatoes often.A little more variation in the recipes would be nice as well as some pointers on how to substitute ingredients and an explanation on why some ingredients do (What is the purpose of using cornstarch?I know, some of it is common sense, but heyyyyyyy.... I'm a stupid college student). For example, for one recipe for frying chicken, I used pork and it tasted fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like Creme Brulee!
One of my all time favorites for dessert, after a fine dining experience.I have enjoyed Creme Brulee, Flan, custards of all description all over the dining world, and this little gem of a book has captured ALL of the varieties known to the culinary world.I can hardly wait to get my eggs, creams and such together to start experimenting with the many techniques and ingredients that are suggested in this little book.Congratulations Debbie on a masterpiece!

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL addition to the cookbook collection
If you LOVE Creme Brulee and want to make it yourself - this is a great cookbook! This book is very small - and fits nicely on my cookbook shelf.

1-0 out of 5 stars It should be called "BEAN AND PASTA COOKBOOK."
I assume that these editors know that grains such as quinoa, amaranth, rye, spelt, kasha and [has no one ever heard of?] wheat can make fine main or side dishes.I had hoped for some new ideas for these and other grains and vegetables on which I have thrived for years.Have they never heard of porridges? If you want speed, make porridge. And quinoa cooks in about fifteen minutes. Most small or cracked grains cook in 15-20 minutes. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, delicious, and sampling from a variety of cuisines
With recipes including Carribean, Italian, Thai, Mexican, and plain old American flavors, you can make gourmet quality meals much faster than using traditional recipes for similar dishes. Some newly available products, like hamburger-style "crumbles" and premade polenta tubes can make some of these recipes even faster. I just LOVE the Jamaican Jerk Tempeh served over noodles, and the vegetarian "Sloppy Joes." I'm online now to order some of the others in this "low-fat & fast" series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Food - But Check the Nutrition Info!
I love this cookbook, use it all the time. One of my favorite recipes is the Mushroom Chowder...Yum!!! BUT....The nutrition information in the book is completely innaccurate - sometimes by more than 100 calories PER SERVING. Luckily I caught it before any damage was done. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!
I really like this book, and always keep it in easy reach.I already have several favorite recipes, including Ravioli in Sage Brown Butter Sauce (my fav), Dessert Wontons (my husband's fav), and Ham and Swiss Pockets (so easy!).Most of the recipes taste like they were so hard to make, and they weren't -- and I am a novice cook, so if I say it's easy, it is!
1-0 out of 5 stars "Everyday cooking?"Give me a break!
Don't be fooled by the title of this cookbook.First, it is filled with exotic and gourmet, not to mention expensive, recipies. The choice of ingredients might be fine if you live in New York or San Francisco, but here in northern Wisconsin many ingredients just aren't available.(And if they were, would you fix squab or fried rabbit for Tuesday night dinner for your family?)
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This is a great cookbook for the beginner and experienced cook. The recipes are easy yet elegant. The variety is excellent.

I'm very happy with my purchase there.I would recommend this vendor.Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! I use it all the time!
I love this cookbook! Great photos, great, varied recipes, and not dumbed down as with some seemingly "international" cookbooks (which recommend subbing soy sauce for fish sauce and the like). I've liked everything I've made from this one, and while I often take longer than the author suggests, it's because I'm slow on prep. I still consider this a "quick cook" cookbook, and one of the best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concord Concerning Calories And Carbs
When you are Dana Carpender and your entire writing career has been predicated on your reputation for being "that bestselling low-carb recipe book lady," then you can imagine the stunned surprise from people who bought her previous books when the title of her new book conspicuously omitted the word "low-carb" for the first time since she started writing cookbooks. Hmmm, that's strange!
5-0 out of 5 stars The best yet...
I love Dana's previous cookbooks, so I had to buy this as soon as I saw it. I've never posted a review on amazon, but I love this book so much I had to. I spend evenings paging through it trying to decide which recipe to make next, out of all the delicious recipes. They are easy too. Some recipes even have a wide variety of ingredients, which I love. I am part of a CSA (community supported agriculture) and I get some of those ingredients in my weekly boxes (fennel, leeks, radicchio, etc).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Healthy, Low Carb Cookbook out there!!
I just bought the "Every Calorie Counts Cookbook", I was torn between the Low Carb Cookbook and this one, I am VERY pleased with this book. It is low carb--GOOD CARB and low fat.Dana starts the book with discussions on good fats, saturated vs unsatured, sweeteners, thickeners.. I have a Master's Degree in medicine and thought I was very knowlegable when it came to nutrition, but she really gave me a entirely new perspective when it comes to healthy fats, and I never knew of xanthan gum to thicken sauces as an alternate to the old corn starch.I have made several dishes out of her book and I must say DELICIOUS!!My boyfriend was quite impressed. The meals are surpisingly easy and quick to make, and the taste is superb.I've been blessed with a thin frame, but I am very concerned with eating healthy and low carb (most of the highly processed junk out there is why America is so obese). This cookbook is a great addition to every home.Thank you so much for this fabulous book!!I hope your book inspires more American's to eat healthy and to realize that it IS NOT difficult to eat healthy and fill your home with fruits and vegatables versus the packaged, processed junk out there. It saddens me to see so many obese children whose future will be one of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease if the parents don't change what they provide for their family to eat. I think people don't know how to eat healthy, or they have the misconception that healthy food doesn't taste good.Your book will enlighten and inspire families to get healthy. Thank you!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite cookbooks
This is one of our favorite cookbooks (our others from Moosewood, Jane Brody, and Tara Duggan).I think every recipe we've tried so far has been a winner. One of our staples is the lasagna recipe, which lets you skip the boiling the noodles step.Easy, fast, delicious.

5-0 out of 5 stars a lot a great recipes
This is a great book for someone who is not necessarily a strict vegetarian, but would like to try eating more vegetables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super!!
I believe that this is one of those cookbooks most people will end up using all the time -- and that goes for both vegetarians and non-veggies.My husband and I recently re-dedicated ourselves to lacto-ovo vegetarianism, and, using recipes from this book, we don't miss meat at all. Also, the recipes truly are "quick", the directions are simple and easy to follow, and the ingredients are "normal", which, for me, makes grocery shopping a lot easier. One more thing -- the book is not bulky and is soft-cover, so I find it a lot easier to use in the kitchen and read in general than I do big, hard-cover cookbooks.Anyway, I hope you try this book; it really is wonderful! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book with great recipes and techniques!
My husband and I aren't diabetic, but we both need to lose weight. We didn't have much success with any of the brand-name diets, so we went to a registered dietician who put us on a diabetic exchange diet.Initially we had a hard time sticking to it, because it was hard to figure out ways to make food tasty with limited fat and starch intake, not to mention trying to figure out correct portion sizes to fit our exchanges.5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Food's Quick & Easy Diabetic Cooking
Brief and to the point, this book was just WONDERFUL.Mr. Food's TV recipes always seem so deliciously decedant. This book is also delicious ... but very far from decadent! Loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great gift for vegetarians
I purchased this cook book for aWedding gift (along with a cash gift) , to the couple getting married who are strict vegetarians. Cash is nice but I also wanted to give them something of meaning that can be handed down generation to generation. Easy to follow vegetariancookbooks are hard to find. The Newlywedsboth work, have a 2year old son; so I wanted to help make their meals easier. After reading the cookbook, I know I made the right choice. This cookbook is amazing with meals made out of 5 ingredients. App's, Soups, salads, dinners and desserts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet
Great variety of fast and easy recipes. Delicious for vegetarians and anyone who is interested in some new recipe ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars A kitchen staple
This is the most used book in my kitchen. I use the recipes as is, or as a template to create my own variations. The book makes good use of all the staples of a veg/vegan diet: grains, beans, soy, veggies, and more. If you are exploring a vegetarian diet, or transitioning to a vegan diet, this is a great guide. OK, so maybe it's not always "gourmet," but it's always good! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the beginner cook
Great book. Easy to read. Perfect for the beginner cook. Spiral bound so it's easy to fold the pages back. Would be nice to have some sort of menu planner, for example buy the ingredients for one dinner and some of those can be used the next day for lunch or another dinner so I dont have a box of 11 eggs left over. I could dig and find another recipe that calls for eggs too but I'm a begginer cook - I need someone to point me to the next recipe.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for those with a general idea on how to cook
I purchased this book from Amazon and received it today, and I am sending it back tomorrow. It is geared towards people who have NO IDEA how to cook, yet the recipes are for food that most college aged students wouldn't eat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good college book!
This cookbook has humor, helpful tid bits, good recipes, and a good variety of recipes. It is worth the buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars *Must read* when going off to college
I'm a freshman in college, and this book really made my first year cooking experiences easy and fun. I especially recommend the breakfast shakes (filling and delicious!), and if you're feeling extra adventurous, go for the meatballs. I made it for a group of friends, with a side of the mashed potatoes, and everyone was really impressed. Wash it all down with home-made chai tea (much better and cheaper than starbucks, believe me!), and you'll have a lot of people asking for seconds! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ...Wow, that hits the spot...
I originally purchased this book because I was looking for some new ideas to help make feeding my family a little bit easier. I wasn't disappointed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good buy for the wife
I purchased this one for the wife and see loved it.She in very much a believer in comfort foods and this book has several dishs that she loves.I do have to say that these dishs are pretty easy to make - Rachael is truly the queen of good quick meals

4-0 out of 5 stars I found another comfort cookbook that makes the best wedding present!
I am an avid, but amateur chef and am getting married in Fall 05. I've been given a bunch of cookbooks. Although I love Rachael Ray, my favorite cookbook so far, hands down, is called NOT ON LOVE ALONE by Jessie Carry Saunders. It has a friendly, intimate tone, and it feels like something written by a young woman for other young couples. The recipes are creative without ever feeling fussy -- the author really loves her comfort food!

4-0 out of 5 stars Like my other Gooseberry Patch book more
This book is a true keeper if you are in a hurry. The main thing I noticed in this particular book is a lack of seasoning ingredients. I guess one would do so to his/her own tastes though (hubby, who even SALTS HIS HAM, is more adamant about this opinion than I am...and he still has startlingly low blood pressure...sheesh!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book!
Have you EVER had a recipe book from which you've tried almost ALL of the recipes? With this one, well, I have. I think that there's only a handful now that I haven't prepared and the only one that was a real stinkaroo was a spinach dish (hey, imagine that!).I use this almost nightly for something, most of the time I plan the whole meal from this book. The recipes are just wonderful and they're done in no time at all.I'm in the process of getting the meals in minutes book - the second one in this series because they're just great. You won't be disappointed with this one!Just hope I don't wear mine out too soon!

4-0 out of 5 stars But where are the rest of the pictures?
I like the book. The recipes look great, and it's very detailed on what to do (and not to do). Lots of variations on each recipe, and also a lot of the questions that I ask myself when trying a new recipe are already answered (like, if I change this, what will happen?)
4-0 out of 5 stars Party Cupcakes
What is more lovely than a platter full of tiny White Russian Cupcakes and Lemon Cupcakes at a baby shower? And following the author's suggestions, I even made up fortunes and inserted them in each cupcake. Guests were able to sample a variety, and (in combination with a lot of cheesecakes) no dessert table ever looked more inviting.Word of warning: I'm a librarian, so I checked this book out of the library. My daughter liked it so much, I had to buy it for her. Always one more recipe to try! And so many useful tips.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great idea book
