1-0 out of 5 stars Not this Guy
Who did she interview to think this is what guy's like to eat? Every recepie in here is designed for women to make sure they can collect their husbands life insurance checks from heart attacks, and still be young enough to enjoy them. Healthy? I don't think so. If you really think her meals are healthy, look how much weight she has gained over the past couple years. Every meal she uses a lot of olive oil, butter, and salty additives. then writing a recepie for "Hamburger Salad" Basically garden greens from a bag, and a couple fried hamburger patties placed on top of the greens, with cheese on it. Oh my...Quick, easy and "Healthy" meals guys like to eat. Yummo? I don't think so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
I'm Jamaican but I love Puerto Rican food, I guess it's because Jamaican and Puerto Rican cooking is pretty similar I guess. There are so many recipes in this book and it's very easy to follow.I first saw this book at my Aunt-in-law's home (She's from P.R) and TiTi Julie told me if I want to learn how to make Arroz con Gandules that I should buy this book and I did.Buy this book, you won'tbe sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Puerto Rican Cookery
I have that book in spanish, because I am from Puerto Rico and my daughter just got married and she wanted the book but she likes it better in English and believe it or not the price was cheaper thru Amazon than in Puerto Rico.
5-0 out of 5 stars PR Cookery....a case of health.
Deep fried?...lol...the person complaining about this as a health issue obviously doesn't know what Puerto Rican cooking is then.Ive been eating my mom's cooking recipes from this book for years, and no one in my immediate family is overweight or obese or unhealthy.Sure things are fried but they are fried at very high heat which keeps the oil from setting in.Plus, Puerto Ricans don't die from fried foods like typical Americans because its different. They actually perform physical labor which uses up those calories, use olive and canola oil instead of your regular vegetable oil, and eat a balanced diet full of locally grown vegetables, fruits, and raised meat. If this person is judging this book becuase of their personal health concerns, then they probably need to judge your typical American cook books and see how unhealthy they are. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook!
I own many cookbooks and this is the one I always use. The recipes are simple, quick and incredibly tasty. It has a great variety of items and I haven't found a recipe yet that I didn't like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook in the House!
I originally bought this cookbook for my young teen daughter. She is required to cook one dinner each week, and I thought this would be simple and straightforward enough. Then I started using it, and it has become the only cookbook I ever seem to use these days.No exotic or expensive ingredients, easy directions for each recipe, and the food actually tastes good!My other cookbooks are all lined up on the bookshelf in the living room, but this one lives on top of the microwave in the kitchen...so, that's a good recommendation!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, too bad you can't put your hands on it
This is an excellent cookbook, especially for newer cooks who don't have exotic ingredients on hand. However, after receiving this book for a wedding present in May, I decided to order 3 copies for family as Christmas presents. I ordered in early October, but will not likely have this book until after the holidays. So, save your breath and buy this elsewhere. What good is a great book if you can't really get it. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It's not as complicated as Sears wants you to believe
Sears wants you to think he has come up with a complicated system which he calls The Zone.
1-0 out of 5 stars More figuring out if you're female
The Zone is a great diet if you have good recipes (not many in here) and if it has the proportions that you need for your personal meal. I've gotten a few good ones out of "What to Eat in the Zone". There are two different weekly menus - for women and for men. Not so in this book. It is based entirely on men. If you are a woman, you have to figure it out for yourself how much to cut down on the ingredients. Some things are obvious - if it calls for 4 oz of meat, you go to 3 oz. But the rest of the recipe is too difficult to figure out. Some people say the Zone is complicated enough as it is, and this book doesn't make a case against that, unless, of course, you are a man.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough edible recipes
This book was good in that I could skim through 3 short chapters and understand the Zone concept completely. It's really all I needed to know to get going. Also, the quick list of food blocks in the back was great. However, the recipes are gross.I have never seen so much cabbage in a cookbook.Just gross. The Formula has better recipes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "scratch" cook who loves this book!
I have always loved to cook.I also love to make things from scratch, so normally I wouldn't look for a book such as this. However, in anticipation of purchasing a home in the country, at least 15 miles from a grocery store, and with gas prices soaring, I decided to check this out of the library after doing some homework online.I picked this book up today and within an hour I had made, and my family consumed, the corn chowder recipe.I was expecting that "canned" taste what with the evaporated milk and cream corn but it was actually really good.Bread and a salad rounded out a nice meal. Before I decide tobuy a cookbook, I make a list of all of the recipes I would be willing to attempt to serve my family, and if the list is at least 75% of the total recipes in the book, I find it worthwhile to own a copy. There are only about three or four recipes in the this entire book I wouldn't try and even then, I am only opposed to those because they use ingredients that can't really be replaced that someone in the family doesn't like, like the mushroom pate.Overall, the recipes are simple but elegant and would be easy to use for entertaining. This is the kind of cookbook that can appeal to almost anyone and is very helpful if trying to stick to a small food budget, many of the ingredients in this book can be purchased in bulk or at stores like Aldi. Five stars all the way, this may be one of the best cookbooks I have used lately.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Great Quick Meals
Love this one, I'm "on the go" most of the time and this book enables me to have quick and really good meals. The Baked Crab Cakes are outstanding.Grab this one if you want good food that take less time and taste like you spent hours in the kitchen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

3-0 out of 5 stars I liked the book but
I found the book very good in describing what you need to look for and do.I liked the receipes..simple and things I would normally buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much sugar, processed food....
This book was disappointing. For starters, if you're cooking healthy recipes you should not be using instant rice, or canned cream-of-whatever soup. And just because you're cooking for children doesn't mean you have to add sugar to vegetables!
3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, But not Great
Decent recipes. Not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, but they're pretty good (the Chunky Apple Muffins are *very* delicious!).However, some recipes do use heavily processed stuff like cream-of-whatever soup, cheez whiz, etc.Ick. :(It's very easy and takes just a few minutes to make a white sauce instead of using a can of cream soup. Not sure why the authors didn't do that instead, as it's much better - both for flavor and health - than the processed stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guy meals on the grill
This sturdy paperboard cookbook, presented by Men's Health magazine, is geared for guys who are novices at cooking and looking for easy meals to prepare on the grill. These 50 recipes, each of which is enhanced with ingredients out of cans, include beef, chicken, fish, pizza, pork, Spam, turkey, and veggies. Among the recipes are beer-can chicken, red-hot ribs, Dr Pepper-glazed ham, teriyaki turkey, and spuds on a stick.5-0 out of 5 stars The secret is the can!
Let's face it, we all love being a little creative in the kitchen or around the grill every now and then. Who would have thought ordinary canned cola or beer would add great taste to the best meats on the grill? Mix a budweiser with worcestershire sauce, grilling mix, and a small jar of chopped jalapenos and you have a wild barbecue mix making you believe you may be out in the Caribbeans. Or a can of sloppy joe barbecue sauce mixed with jalapenos. There are recipes a plenty guaranteed to fire up your taste buds.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No weird foods or ingredients!
Being new to the gluten-free diet I have been very disappointed in the majority of the GF cookbooks. The ingredients are often a challenge to find, are expensive, and frankly just taste gross or have a funky texture. The more ingredients that are different from what we "used to eat" the more disappointing the outcome.Of all the cookbooks I've tried so far (8 of the "mainstream" ones) this one has the most familiar ingredients and "normal" foods. My 5 year old has enjoyed everything I have made from this book so far and has been excited to eat something GF that actually tastes like what he used to eat.The recipes are simple, fast, affordable, and best of all we actually enjoy food again!THANK YOU CONNIE SARROS!

I LOVE this book. The title is perfect.Every recipe I have tried has seriously been simple to prepare.Great color photographs make it easy to flip through and find something new to try.The dishes actaully look like the pictures! Each dish turns out tasting wonderful, and many have become repeat favorites in our house.I've purchased this book as a gift several times and won't hesitate to do so again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seriously AWESOME
This cook book is one of the better finds out there. Most cook books with the word "simple" in the title are filled with recipes that start with a can of condensed soup. This cookbook really is creative. The fish stew is fabulous.A friend of mine prepared it for me (along with the marscapone toasts with honey and berries).I like it so much I had to get the cookbook.I've since tried several other dishes--all fabulous.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book delivers on its title

I'm only writing this review to let you know the actual outcome of one of the recipes.I fell in love with Gifts In A Jar because they make great unique gifts.I made 4 jars today to give to teachers.Because this was my first time giving the gift to others I thought I'd try the recipe to taste what they would be making. They were VERY dry.Have one with a big glass of milk. The jars themselves came out very cute but I wished I had tasted the recipe before I decided to do them.I am a little disappointed.Just thought you'd like to know too.Try the recipe first and then decide if you want others to think this is your culinary best.I wish I had time to get another gift.Oh well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful format more than makes up for a few bland recipes and dated nutritional advice
I own several cookbooks intended for "solo" cooks, and this is my favorite of the bunch, no contest. The recipe formats are simple and easy to follow, and most of them can be carried out by an inexperienced cook with minimal difficulty and fair-to-excellent results. Furthermore, most of the ingredients called for here are easily found at any full service grocery store; the results are often quite economical. Anyone on a tight budget would do well using this book for a mainstay. The design is a bit soft and feminine for my taste, but I recognize the nurturing vibe being expressed here, and it doesn't cloy or irritate me the way serious self righteous Mennonite cookbooks or hippie tomes like "Diet For A Small Planet" do. This is a great cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine for beginners, Not overwhelming. Good meal ideas.
I looked at lots of cookbooks for beginners, and planned to get Rachel Rays, but found this one and bought it instead for my son and nephew (along with Cooks Illustrated). It has food they like, ingredients that aren't too complicated, pictures to see what they might like to make, and isn't so big as to overwhelm them. Side dishes to complement the entrees are offered at the end of the book. I think this is a good choice for new cooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, easy recipes
I've cooked about half a dozen or more recipes from this cookbook, and all have been simple and fabulous. Each recipe is divided up into "advance preparation" and "last-minute cooking", which means you can do alot of the prep work earlier in the day. Directions are easy to follow, ingredients are not to obscure, and suggestions for salads and side dishes allow you to complete the meal easily. A must-buy for anyone who likes gourmet food but doesn't have a lot of time to cook. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I have EVER written!
This book is the best cook book that I have EVER purchased.I Immediately I thumbed thru the pages and found that this book is divided into seasons, in order to take full advantage of the seasons growing cycles.Cherry Lemon Limaide in Summer.Cranberry chicken in the Autumn.. Chicken and dumplings for those cold winter nights, and Citris suprize awaits you in the spring.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for newly weds
I bought this book for a granddaughter that is gettng married.I have one myself and I know it will begreat for her--because I love my copy.Clarice Bostick

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, yes, and YES!
Thus far, everything in this cookbook is GOOD and HANDY (I have only had it a week or so, and have already used it three times, to the neglect of my other Gooseberry Patch cookbooks!) It's lots of fun just to read the recipes, which are both mouth-watering and almost TOO easy. Clear, simple instructions will please even the most novice cooks. I also loved how this book was organized by season: lighter, fresher dishes in the summer section; cozier, comfort-food dishes in the fall and winter.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great wedding gift !
the happy couple about to be married enjoy good food.the groom to be is the chef; the bride has a demanding career and has no time to cook, but wants to learn some basics just the same. This book is great for people like them...really begins at the beginning and has some very good recipes.I copied a few of them to keep for myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great as a Present or Starter Cookbook
First off, this book looks great. I have a collection of hand-me-down 'classics' (Beard, Joy, all that jazz) but none of them are very presentable. After getting married recently, we decided to get a new book and this one really stood out. I personally think the title (cooking together) is a little misleading, because there's not much really that would differentiate it from any other starter cookbook in that regard. It is more family oriented in meal choices, and gives some great pointers to get you moving around the kitchen. There is also excellent advice on meals, pairings etc.Overall its a very good resource, especially for a younger couple. And of course, thanks to the slipcover, it makes a great wedding or anniversary present!

5-0 out of 5 stars Over a hundred classic dishes for meals from breakfast to dinner
If you're seeking a shower or wedding gift for a couple who likes to cook or eat, BRIDE & GROOM COOKBOOK: RECIPES FOR COOKING TOGETHER is the item of choice for such a couple. The authors use their own experience as restaurant chefs and as a married couple to show how working families can use dozens of favorite dishes to create hundreds of family meals. Even though the authors are cooks, they don't presume any prior knowledge: the basics accompany over a hundred classic dishes for meals from breakfast to dinner and plenty of supportive tips from preparation and cooking times to a complexity scale between 1-4.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gifts in a jar Soups
I've made most of the recipes in this book and they're all pretty good. The friendship soup is the best.I love the whole idea.

3-0 out of 5 stars check the ingredients!
This is a great book idea, but look at the ingredients before shopping - lots of non-homemade seasonings/flavorings in the recipes that could easily be adapted to include more homemade ingredients.Use your own creativity to adapt the recipes and you'll have a real winner!

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good recipes, few recipes in book
I have most of the books in this series. My parents are aging and I have been looking for items that I can make for them which will have a long shelf life and would require them to do minimal food preparation, yet still have a 'home cooked meal'.The recipes fit the bill for the most part.In each book I found that there were a few recipes that are great and some I wouldn't try at all. This is what I usually find in any cookbook.I would comment that each book only has about 25 or so recipes in it.The rest of the pages consist of 6 copies each of pre-made instruction cards to enclose with each food package. I did feel disappointed in the number of recipes for the cost of the book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mixes (still) make sense!
This is a wonderful cookbook!I owned a copy in the 70's that got a lot of use.I now own a new copy. The latest edition has additional recipes and updates older ones so they are in line with current health guidelines. This cookbook helped me raise a family, and now, as empty-nesters, it's still helping us put dinner on the table!Everyone is busy these days and many are living on expensive and unhealthy takeout food. You can have delicious, thrifty and healthy meals with a minimum of fuss, using this cookbook. Periodically, I cull my cookbook collection and discard outdated ones - but I will never part with Make-A-Mix!

3-0 out of 5 stars Pleased so far...
I'm really excited about this book! So far all the recipes I've made have been great, with the exception of one - the Brownie Mix. The recipe does not call for any liquid, is this a misprint? It was crumbly - not even close to 'pouring' consistency.

This cookbook is amazing. Some of my friends are going to place an order and, like I have done, order a second for their daughters and daughters-inlaw. I may order more for Christmas.
