5-0 out of 5 stars Another Better Homes and Gardens winner
Produced by the Better Homes and Gardens and tested through their test kitchens "500 Five Ingredient Recipes" is a wonderful collection of no fuss recipes.Don't make the mistake of thinking these are necessarily fast recipes. While some take only a few minutes to prepare others such as the "Easy Elegant Beef Roast" can take several hours to prepare. The purpose of the book is exactly as the title states - each recipe takes only five ingredients.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully imaginative cookbook
Lynn Gigliotti is a lecturing instructor in Culinary Arts at the famous Culinary Institute of America and draws upon her many years of experience and expertise to put together "One Dish Meals: Flavorful Single-Dish meals From The world's Premier Culinary College". One-dish meals are designed for kitchen cooks who are under limitations of time but want to grace their family's dinner table with nutritious, delicious, and interesting meals that would please the palate even as they satisfied the appetite. Beautifully illustrated throughout with color photography of finished dishes, the "kitchen cook friendly" recipes comprising "One Dish Meals" range from 'Vegetable Soup with Radish Salsa'; 'Saigon Beef Stew'; 'Veal Braised in Asti Spumante'; and Frittata with Bacon, Corn and Pasta'; to 'Mushroom-Cauliflower Cury'; 'Potato Salad with Tuna, Olives, and Red Peppers'; and 'Gyro with Tsatziki Sauce'. A wonderfully imaginative cookbook, "One Dish Meals" is especially recommended to novice chefs needing easy to prepare and inspiringly served meals for any occasion from daily family fare to special occasion dining!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Hit from the CIA
This beautiful book, filled with more than 150 recipes and 100 color photographs, is not your typical casserole cookbook. It takes one dish meals to a whole new level. The recipes prove that one dish meals aren't only for cold weather. They range from long simmering rich and savory winter-type meals to light fare for hot summer days. They also run the gamut from dishes that take hours to cook to ones that take 15 minutes to prepare on those busy days, though casseroles and baked dishes predominate.

This book has made it easy for me to plan and cook healthy meals on a regular basis.I have been pleasantly surprised several times by recipes I wasn't sure I would like.I never knew that healthy food could be so flavorful!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for reforming one's diet
I bought this book because I have been diagnosed with a cardiac problem.I need to lose weight.I also have a few other health issues so being able to put good food on the table quickly is a must for me. This book gives wonderful recipes for doing just that. I've had the book for 2 weeks and I've used it nearly every day. And even the times I haven't used it, I've used the "good food fast" principles as I cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast easy delicious recipes
We usually rely on Moosewood cookbooks and Jane Brody, but this has become one of our first go-to books when looking for a good, fast, easy recipe. The black bean soup, for example is super easy (all ingredients we keep around the house), and amazingly delicious.I ate that soup every day until it was gone. The three or four other recipes we've tried have also been easy and delicious (although sometimes we have to go out and buy a few special ingredients). Also, each recipe includes cooking time and nutrition info, and at the beginning of the book there's basic info like what foods and utensils are good to have around, and what do words like saute and simmer mean exactly, which would make it a great book for people who don't do much cooking yet.We like it so much we bought an extra copy to give as a gift.

Every recipe I have tried in this book has been terrific....even the most bean-shy individual will have to admit that beans can be tasty.I didn't have a great deal of experience cooking with beans and lentils, so I appreciated the cooking method section.I can honestly say that this is the best cookbook I have ever bought.

5-0 out of 5 stars My new "cooking bible"!
I LOVE to cook and have always done a lot of Tex-Mex, Mediterranean, Indian, Asian, etc.Thing is, now I'm caring for my elderly parents and my dad was placed on a 2g sodium diet *gah!* so I needed to make a little adjustment.
3-0 out of 5 stars Keep it or return it? I'm sitting on the fence...
I looked through nearly every page last night and the book is back in the bag with the receipt ready to be returned.Although I don't think it's a "bad" book, it's just not what I expected. Not all of the recipes are truly "one dish" and it's got a heavy emphasis on fish. The recipies in general are not typical meals I would be overly enthused to make--or serve. We are not picky eaters but I can't imagine making some of these recipes and serving them without expecting a negative reaction from my husband. We might try at most a half dozen of the recipes but we're not likely to repeat them. So, I think it's best I return it.

5-0 out of 5 stars FeastFood to Celebrate Life
One of the best cookbooks I ever bougth. It's like a hobbie in itself. I plan to try a different receipe every weekend with great results!.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Feast" gives great inspiration for celebrating life!
In her fifth cookery book, "Feast", Nigella Lawson offers a collection of recipes and occasions to mark our lives. It is her experience that "food is the vital way we celebrate anything that matters" (vii). Before us, then, is a book replete with recipes new and familiar to mark occasions traditional (Christmas, New Year, Easter), foreign (at least from my ethnocentric perspective: Venetian, Eid, and Rosh Hashanah), and fun (Valentine's Day, Breakfast, and Midnight). A feast is not just a meal; it is a condition of an innate human need to mark an event or occasion with those to whom we have a close bond by augmenting it with food.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anything by Nigella is great!!
This was the first book I bought by Nigella Lawson and I loved it so much that I immediately bought every other book by her that I could find. The recipes are great and most of them are very easy to prepare.Besides that, the book is joy to just sit down and read, as are all her books!!!I also should mention all the gorgeous photographs of the food. You'll love this book!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the books that I reach for the most
I collect baking cookbooks and I have many. This book is one I reach for often. There are a few of my favorite recipes in here. The White Birthday Cake Frosting is the BEST!I make it all the time and always get raves about it.There is also a Raspberry Cheesecake Bar Recipe that is to die for!I give this book only 4 stars because there are recipes in this book that I think are not that great.I bake frequently (a least a few times a week) and therefore I'm pretty familiar with recipes that work and ingredients that work. The recipes that are notthat great are few though. No matter what cookbook you buy, you can always expect to like only so many of the recipes either due to personal opinion or the fact that it just might not be a good recipe.I recommend this book if you like good old fashioned baking.Lots of easy recipes and classic recipes. It's inexpensive and has tons of recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent baking book even if you are not a mom.
I bought this book for a gift but after looking through it I had to keep it for myself.I would say that I am a medium level cook but I think the recipes are so easy and fool proof that even beginers will have success with them.I usually do the bulk of my baking during the holidays. So far I have made mainly the cookies from this book.I was tired of having Christmas cookies that looked good but were lacking in taste. This book has solved that problem for me.For the last two years I have made all of my holiday baking from this book. The almond thumbprints with the milk chocolate ganache is out of this world. Also excellent is the cherry and white chocolate rugelach.I had never tried such a complex cookie before, you have to make a dough, roll it out and shape the cookie, but the results were outstanding. The recipe for apple pie has become my standard Thanksgiving one. Best of all are the notes Lauren writes throughout the book. You feel like you get to know her and her family. Each chapter has an introduction to it so you know what equipment or special techniques you will need. There are also confidence boosts as Lauren explains how easy it really is to make waffles, breads, cookies, etc.I have always wanted to try making homemade pizza dough and Lauren's recipe is so straightfoward that I'm finally going to give it a try. There are no pictures of finished products in this book but I didn't miss them in the least. The recipes are all simple and straightfoward. There is an emphasis on not needing to have special equipment or hard to find ingredients. You probably own all of the equipment you need and all ingredients can be found in your local grocery store. If you should ever want to go a more exoctic route, Lauren also provides an online resource guide so you can find real chocolate sprinkles or the perfect shape cookie cutter. Whenever I want to make a treat this is the first book I reach for.I recommend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy stuff!
I've never been much of a baker, but I received this cookbook as a gift and thought I'd try some recipes. All the recipes I've tried have been quick, easy and so delicious. I've made several of the muffins -- all so much better than anything you could buy in the store. Most of the recipes are so easy my 4-year-old can help. I use this cookbook often and I plan to give it as a gift to my friends who are busy parents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars saves room in your fridge!
My husband and I received this book for our wedding, and 4 years later we still love it. All our other books yielded 4 servings in most recipes, and we would end up with piles of tupperware containers in the fridge holding leftovers that inevitably went bad. We have tried all of the entree recipes in the book and love them. There are also a lot of recipes for soups, salads, and even some sandwiches food that is easily portable. My husband is the cook in our house- I rarely cook, and am very much a beginner, but all of these recipes were simple enough for me. Yes, there is a lot of chicken, but I don't know too many people who don't like chicken! And yes, there are a lot of vegetables too- but you're gonna be looking a long time for a recipe book without chicken or vegetables. If we didn't want to eat chicken or vegetables, we'd go to McDonalds.

3-0 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker's Cooking for Two
Possibly a good book for someone interested in lots of vegetables.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Lovers Dream
This cookbook is only useful if you live on an above average income and love chicken.Eighty percent of the dinner recipes are chicken, most of the rest are salads or some variation of noodles. The portions are all divided into two person sizes, however there is nothing to help you buy only what you need to prepare a meal for two without left over rations. In short, this cookbook is completely useless for anyone closely resembling a newly-wed couple on a tight budget who happen to not love chicken. Now I'm off to find a cookbook I can hopefully actually use.Very disappointing... ... Okay, you were about to open the wine and let it breathe, maybe you were going to saute the shrimp you bought yesterday. A simple delicious meal for two, just you and your husband, when he calls, says he's invited the boss, his wife and two guys from planning and their wives as well over for dinner. It's four-thirty and they're coming at six.
4-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite
I have cookbooks.I have a LOT of cookbooks. But lately this is the one I've been pulling out again and again.I've been cooking for years, but this cookbook showed me new and creative ways of making quick, EASY meals.Plus, the results are delicious, despite some of the negative reviews that have been posted here.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not Nearly as Good as Others...
I put off writing this review for a while, because I really love the Cake Doctor books, which are just fantastic, and didn't want to say anything that would hurt Ms. Byrn's feelings--she seems like a pretty cool chic. This book, however, was a major disappointment.I made several recipes from it and I'd say three out of four got two forks way, way down--my family did not like them at all.The other reviewer that says she depends a lot on soup and cheese, half and half is accurate. If I wanted such meals, I'd just zip on over to Cambells.com and save myself the cost of the book.I didn't find anything in here that my family was glad to see again aside from the Ham-and-Cheese Impossible Pie, which I found out was pretty well known elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars helpul to any health-seeking or dieting cook
the other reviews pretty much sum it up, however in addition I would like to add that all of these recipes are made from entirely "healthy" calories and can bring joy to any otherwise boring meal.If a less caloric sauce is desired, the sweetener is easily replaced with the according amount of STEVIA*, and the fat may be replaced with an equal amount of soymilk and thickener (i.e. xanthan, arrowroot, agar, etc...) resulting in a virtually calorie-free and equally satisfying topping for your gastronomic needs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who hate to cook!
I'm a vegan with a gluten intolerance who hates to cook.Rather than starve to death, I bought The Saucy Vegetarian! This book allows me to create really great-tasting meals without slaving over the stove. The sauces require no cooking, so they are ready in less than five minutes.I prepare a grain, like quinoa or brown rice, a protein like beans or tofu, and one of the sauces in the book, mix them together, and voila!I have a yummy, healthy, meal! Many of the sauces in the book make good salad dressings, too. In the margins of the book are suggestions of what each sauce might taste good with.I use the suggestions as a springboard to try all kinds of combinations. If you own a wire whisk and a bowl, this book is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring! You'll never go back to bottled dressings.:-)
I have several shelves full of vegan and vegan-friendly cookbooks. The Saucy Vegetarian is one of my favorites, not just for the delicious 100% vegan recipes, but for the creativity it inspires. The recipes generally involve processing about 6 to 8 no-cook (with occasional stove-top roasting) ingredients in the blender, and in some cases a food processor.Using this simple technique, I've made many awesome sauces and dressings, both Jo Stepaniak's recipes, and variations based on her recipes.A couple of ingredient substitutions I make that work well are 1 tablespoon chopped onion for each teaspoon powdered onion, and 1 teaspoon maple syrup for each teaspoon sugar.Unlike Jo's earlier works, some of these recipes call for sugar rather than a more natural, lower glycemic index sweetener.Fortunately, this isn't a problem as the maple syrup works fine, and there is a section listing recommended sweeteners and describing how they work in recipes.

I think that whether a person likes this book will depend some on his/her expectations when beginning to use it, and upon his/her experience w/ other cookbooks for slow-cookers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy cooking for a working mom
Lots of recipe variety, minimum effort. Delicious meat and vegetarian options. I leave the slow cooker on while sleeping at night or during the day while I am at work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and fun!
One of the things I loved about this book was that you didn't have to spend a lot of extra money on spices that you'll use one time. The author was brilliant to incorporate ready-made items that you can use for a recipe.. then use the remainder for something else. The book itself is laid out well which makes it easy to read. The only drawback would the spiral plastic spine. Those never do last very long without them coming partially undone. ... Read more

I was very disappointed in this book. The part of the book about how to actually cook once and eat for a week was very small. The book was mostly recipes. I returned the book ASAP.

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 Choice for 2003
The year's top cookbook is Jyl Steinback's Cook Once, Eat for a Week.If you are wanting the best tips on planning ahead, shopping smart, super-healthy meals, cooking shortcuts, and freezing advice, then Jyl's cookbook is for you. It's meant for busy, wellness-oriented family living.2-0 out of 5 stars dissapoinment! I thought it would lay out menus.
I ordered this book hoping it would be a weekly version of the once a month cooking books, intead it just had advice on freezing and preserving and a bunch of recipes, I still have to do all the planning, just as I would with any other cookbook.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the book
I have tried many of the recipes in this book and have at least really liked, if not loved, every one.The pictures are beautiful, the text is concise but makes a point, and the recipes are easy to follow.Even my carniverous husband, and my kids, have complimented me on everything I have made from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!! You must buy this book!
For people who have never had an appetite for the kitchen, this book is so wonderful! It tells you how to put your kitchen together, what basics you need and it's everything you can find at a mainstream grocery store as well as healthfood stores.5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes for a Vital Life

4-0 out of 5 stars Microwave Gourmet
This book is filled with ways to cook in your microwave, things I would not have thought could be done. It is an especially good book for beginning cooks, and I would highly recomend it for a wedding present.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction
This book provides a good introduction to Microwave cooking techniques and it gives several useeful tips on selecting and buying Microwave Cookware. The only drawback are the recipes included.Several of them are too gourmet and they should put more emphasis onn basic and popular dishes. However, I have found about seven dishes which I will prepare. There should also be more emphasis placed on dishes and cooking for the Single person.

5-0 out of 5 stars A serious cookbook for the microwave, truly excellent!
Don't cook in the microwave without this book.Transversely, if you don't have this cookbook, then you will miss out on many wonderful things you CAN cook in the microwave with superior results.Don't be fooled, the finished product will be truly delicious. I was highly sceptical of many of the recipes in the beginning but they turn out perfectly every time.Have relied on these recipes for many years. You will cook more often, quickly and easily, (saving you money as well) when you use this cookbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The most dog-eared cookbook in the kitchen...
That's because I am constantly reaching for it!I love this book. And you should know that I hate to cook.Really.But I do love to eat, and this book marries those two opposing characteristics beautifully.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and inspired
Simmons contends that fresh foods are more convenient than packaged and sets out to prove it with this seasonal approach to quick meals. Most meals can be on the table in an hour or less, each is accompanied with preparation and cooking times, and a "plan ahead" box alerts cooks to any extra steps such as marinating, cooling or the use of cooked ingredients.5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Top-Notch !
The recipes are without exception delicious. The descriptions of the times involved for preparation, cooking, and so forth are accurate, and the recipes that need more time are also clearly labeled. Now...this cookbook will make you feel inspired! Get this book! I've bought it for all my friends and for my daughter and they all love it. Not to mention it's got the best fudge sauce in the world in it! ... Read more
