5-0 out of 5 stars a magical adventure
I found this book in the bookstore at the Culinary Institute of America while I was waiting for the college's tour to begin. The title caught my attention, and the first paragraph hooked me.After reading parts of it for 10 minutes, I bought it and finished reading it over the next three days.I took my time, savoring each chapter, each conversation, each morsel offered up by this delightful young author.
4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful culinary hunter / gatherer memoir. Read it.
`The Scavenger's Guide to Haute Cuisine' by hunting and fishing sports writer, Steven Rinella is, as another reviewer points out, much less of a culinary memoir than the title may suggest, but that is not, I believe, a legitimate reason to give this memoir a low score.
4-0 out of 5 stars A DIY geek's introduction to hunting and cooking.
I don't read outdoor books, and am only mildly interested in food writing, but I really admire renegade DIY personalities. This book is all about people doing things their own way. From the author to the crazy characters he encounters, this book will inspire you to think about doing things yourself rather than having them done for you.Which is an interesting way of life, to say the least.Maybe I won't build an eel weir anytime soon, but I'm glad to have read about somebody who did. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I like it!
I really like the shopping lists. It is nice knowing that after I have been to the store I can prepare a week's worth of menus and I never have to say, "oops, I'm out of..."
5-0 out of 5 stars Cookbooks with Personality
Brook Noel is delightfully funny and her cookbooks are a result of all the years where she was learning to cook and accomplished tasks with amusing results, like the time she baked a cherry pie without pitting the cherries. Not unlike one of my aunts who made a cherry pie without straining the cherries from a can but can make the best lasagna in the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars I am REALLY cooking!!!And I actually sort of LIKE it!
Okay.I have been with my husband for almost 6 years. And during that time, I think I have probably cooked around 40 meals not using a box or frozen prepared item. And I was in complete agony from the moment I attempted to pick a dish to cook, all the way through to washing the dishes. Then, last week my Weekly Wonders book showed up!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Exquisite
Once again Marilyn Tausend does not disappoint!I own the Spanish edition of this book and have given the English edition to friends visiting Mexico and wanted a "real authentic Mexican cuisine" cookbook. She does a great job on explaining the traditions and festivities that go hand-in-hand with a lot of foods in Mexico. The Christmas punch is a family favorite served annually at our Posadas and Christmas meals.(Recipe tip:remove the seeds from the Guavaba fruit before adding to the punch.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn Tausend Rocks!
This book is a wonderful followup to her collaborative work "Mexico The Beautiful". I was afraid that many of the wonderfully authentic recipes from her other books might be duplicated here, but that's not the case. As usual, she's managed to come up with very authentic recipes (I have lived in Mexico for many years now and have studied the cuisines) that I had been hoping to find, such as Quail in Rose Petal Sauce of "Like Water For Chocolate" fame, Cream of Chile Poblano, and Torta Azteca, among others. The instructions are easy to understand, the photography is brilliant, the ingredients are relatively easy to find and Ms. Tausend again did her research right because these recipes taste like the real thing! This is not another taco/enchilada/burrito cookbook, there are many truly fascinating and hard-to-find dishes in this book. I'm so glad I bought it! If you're looking for another great Mexican cooking aid, this is the one to get after Mexico the Beautiful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent mexican cooking book!!!!
I was looking for a good authentic mexican book (my husband is mexican) and this one captured my attention. My husband reviewed it and he aggreed that the recipes are authentic from a lot of regions in Mexico. Each recipes has its own picture and very well presented.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good cook book, worth acquiring
The layout in my '98 paperback edition is quaint, at best, but the information is top-notch, an interesting assortment of dishes, most of which I'm interested in making. While this book isn't as pretty as some others, the information is unique, I like Rick Rodgers' writing style -- lots of useful information and food combinations I don't imagine that I'd have ever thought of. I'd like to see this cook book updated, I'd buy another copy. It would be really great if it had a spiral binding, so that it would lay flat -- I love details like that, making things truly useful.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Wonderful Cookbook

5-0 out of 5 stars Real food, really simple
I grew up in the 1970s eating dinners from the Crock Pot prepared in the morning to be ready when my parents came home from work.My mother was picky, she had only a handful of recipes she liked, because back then far too many recipes called for raw meat dumped in with a can of whatever soup and combined with frozen vegetables. But there were a few, a very few, that with some extra effort yielded wonderful results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tops the stack of more "advanced" cookbooks I have
I obtained this book at a garage sale after I was well into my years of being an experienced cook. It is by far the most used book in my extensive collection. The recipes are easy to understand, quick to prepare, and with almost no exceptions, turn out reliably great. I have cookbooks with recipes for the same items that are far more complex, yet not as consistent. I wish I had had this book when I was first starting out, because it would have saved me a lot of time and failures. I, too, was initially put off by the association with Glamour Magazine; don't let that deter you. You will wear this book out if you buy it; that's why I'm on this site - to order a newer copy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still great after all these years
My Mother gave me this cookbook as a gift shortly after it was published and shortly after I moved into my first apartment.I've had and really used this cookbook for all these years. On more than two occasions, I've opened this cookbook and recognized favorite recipes that I'd found in traditional gourmet magazines and couldn't believe were in this cookbook - really ahead of the times! When my niece moved into her first apartment, I started thinking about which cookbooks I had really loved and used on a regular basis. This is the first cookbook I sent her. Yes, I'm a bit embarrassed by recommending a "Glamour" book, but the fact is I think it is a really wonderful cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emabarrising...but I love it!
I consider myself an accomplished, well-informed, nutrition-oriented cook.I have numerous cookbooks, and yet, always return to many of the recipes in here: the blue cheese dip, the lamb, some of the salads and the chicken recipes are the best.I wish to goodness that the publishers would reprint or sequel this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Light Cookbook!
I have had this cookbook for a couple of years now and tried about half of the recipes. They have all been very tasty. My husband and I love to cook from this book after we come home from work because it's fast and allows us to eat healthy.I definatley use this cookbook more than any others I own!

5-0 out of 5 stars All-time favorite for busy families
As a registered dietitian, I often have patients who tell me that they don't have enough time to prepare healthy meals. I always recommend this cookbook for its quick dinners. It makes it easy to put together great tasting meals, and it provides suggestions for side dishes to make it a complete meal. It provides a shopping list, and also gives you a list of foods to keep on hand, so that you always can pull together a great meal at the last minute. Add in being heart-healthy, and you have a terrific resource. It isn't for someone who wants to spend the time cooking gourmet meals from scratch. It is perfect for moms looking for a way to have a variety of health, family-friendly meals. A wonderful resource for real life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes In So Little Time

The ADA is currently the most accurate and substantial nutritional source for how we live today.Month of Meals was created for diabetics but is also an excellence source for all of us who want to lose or maintain a healthy weight while eating good food.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother unless you are a new diabetic
This book doesn't have many recipes in it.It has some.Mostly it has suggestions such as for dinner you are to get a thin and crispy pizza from Pizza hut and have a salad with it.Or for Breakfast 1 package of instant oatmeal, wheat germ, 1 mini pack of raisons, and 1 cut fat free milk. For lunch one such suggestion is 1 Stouffer's lean cuisine cheese cannelloni 1/2 cup steamed broccoli, with margarine and 2 bread sticks and 2 cups mixed berries. Those aren't recipes!!The recipes are ok but because my husband is a picky eater we can only try about 5 of them. There are only about 28 recipes included.I'm not totally sorry I bought the book because my husband is newly diagnosed and it does have some good information in the book for newly diagnosed people.I will NEVER buy any of the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars practical and delicious
i am vietnamese and since i never had the priviledge to learn directly from my mom how to cook.. i picked up this book just to give it a try. within a few weeks, i have tried most of the recipes particularly the main dishes. not only are they quick recipes with only 4 to 5 steps max, the dishes require simple ingredients, obtainable and cheap.. not only that but all these dishes have turned out to be delicious.. i feel like i can compete with my mom's great cooking. lol. i absolutely love this book. it's a must have!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed guide for very traditionally Vietnamese dish
I like the book after just skimming through some of the pages.I know to cook some of them before and I think it matches the way it was taught in there.I believe this is an excellent book for those who really want to know to cook traditional Vietnamese dish especially the dish from the Northern Vietnam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great everyday Vietnamese cookbook
I come from a Vietnamese family but was raised in a small Wisconsin town.Growing up, my mom would make Vietnamese dishes along with standard American fare.Although the supermarkets in the area did not have available all the necessary ingredients to make authentic Vietnamese dishes, my mom found comparable replacements.I never cooked that much to begin with, but when I got older and lived away from my folks, I wanted to try my hand at Vietnamese cooking and found this book while I was a student in Washington DC.I've tried many of the recipes in this cookbook and found them easy to follow and the results tasted quite good. Also, I thought it was especially helpful that the author used ingredients that could be found almost anywhere in the U.S. and explained or had pictures of what some of the ingredients were (I had never seen actual lemongrass until I moved to DC!).So, I recommend this book to anyone interested in trying out Vietnamese cooking. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Picky Eaters Beware!!!
I am the Mom of a very picky eater & I am purchasing this book from Amazon after trying it out from the library.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too much fat!
This book contains way too many recipes with high fat items. It also doesn't contain the nutritional info for the finished items, which makes it useless to me.If you're thinking "healthy" means moderate to low fat/calorie, then this isn't the book for you!

2-0 out of 5 stars Should be called peanut butter snack book!
I was hoping to find some help in the snack dept, as I have a limited variety of ideas for my partially food-allergic kid.He is allergic to a few items -- one happens to be peanuts, the other egg whites, but that's it.And unfortunately, 80% of the recipes in this book include peanut butter, nuts, or eggs!Nothing more original.I expected some of this knowing kids love PB, but most of the recipes are inclusive of one of the 2 allergens my son has, so this book was a huge disappointment.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to my cookbook library!
I bought this book for me and my boyfriend to use... and we do so religously. We make a recipe from this book about once per week and are always delighted with the results. The recipes are easy to follow and if ingredients are difficult to find in your local grocery, substitute ingredient suggestions are made. We now have a few favorites we have added to our repertoire!
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
The recipes are poor and the inability to substitute is worse. Plus some of the ingredients are hard to come by. Better off with another cookbook, or just taking your favorite stand by cookbooks and learning to modify the recipes yourself. This book is downright bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for One
I purchased this book last year and didn't start using it until recently.I was initially put-off by the number of ingredients for the meals and thought that the recipes were going to be too involved for me to cook for myself after a 10-12 hr day.Once I finally tried one recipe and saw how easy it was, I am now trying a new one every week. There may be many ingredients, but the recipees are very simple and the instructions detailed.I also am not left with a ton of left-overs that will ultimately end up going down the garbage disposal!I have loved everything I have tried so far. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be scared by the cover!
After trying the unbelievably bland "Healthy Cooking for Two" and so many other "cooking for two" cookbooks (many on which were written in the 80's) and being thoroughly dissapointed, I cam across this gem. These recipes go far beyond the "take two skinless boneless chicken breasts, bake, serve with cornstarch/orange juice reduction" type recipes which haunt other cooking for two books. Those books often get the "quick, easy, for two" part right, but leave your taste buds crying.5-0 out of 5 stars Quick and Tasty

5-0 out of 5 stars A great addition/edition
This handy cookbook has a wide variety and even includes a vegetarian section. It has some of the most interesting salad recipes that I have seen. And seen they are because there are a lot of mouth-watering photos. Some examples: Autumn Fruit Salad with Pomegranate: Thai Pork, Mint and Peanut Salad; Moroccan Carrot Salad. And the rest of the book is just as creative and good.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cook Book!
This book is a wonderful collection of recipes for the slow cooker. There are a great variety of recipes in this book.Definitely a must have for the busy family as you can prepare the meal before work and have a hot meal waiting for you at home.Using a crock pot slow cooker is especially nice during the summer months so you can still have a good meal without having to heat up the whole house with an oven.So this book gives you a nice selection of meals to try and choose from. This book is definitely a family favorite.

3-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, maybe; Simple, no.
This cookbook features elegant recipes with long lists of exotic ingredients.Everything looks delicious, but I've only made a couple of recipes because they are not practical for my busy life. To cook from this cookbook, you have to plan ahead, buy unusual ingredients that are sometimes hard to find and are unlikely to be called for in other recipes, and be prepared to put some real time in to prepare the meal.If you enjoy cooking this way as a hobby, you may well enjoy this cookbook. However, if when you cook for yourself, you want flavorful, healthy food without a lot of effort, this is not the cookbook for you.I like the book for browsing through, looking at the pretty pictures, and imagining the recipes all made up.I rarely cook from it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for those with a whole lot of time
So... I don't pretend to be Julia Childs in the kitchen and yes, often I create items which include the suffix n'cheese. I bought this book, expecting to find recipes for those like myself who can't figure out how to reduce ingredients down to a "solo supper," really how do you reduce one egg? Anyhow, I found this book to be out of touch with those who would be most likely to use it. Yes I love a great meal as much as the next person but honestly I will not be cooking duck for myself anytime soon. If you are looking for a cookbook for everyday use for those of us who live alone, I don't recommend this book. If you are someone who likes a multi-course multi-hour preparation meal for you and your lonesome than buy this book immediately.

3-0 out of 5 stars I like it, but it's NOT for everyone
I'm sort of baffled as to how to review this cookbook, because I think it's great for her intended audience, but the marketing is a bit misleading.Someone who is looking for truly SIMPLE meals to make for one person may be a bit dissappointed. So I'll just sum up my impressions of it so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for first-timers with a kitchen
I'm a junior in college, and my parents bought this cookbook for me as a gift for my first apartment. My experience with cooking hasn't really gone past heating up chicken cutlets in the oven, so I was a little wary of using an actual cookbook. But this book is really useful.
2-0 out of 5 stars Aimed at the wrong audience...
With the hotplate and microwave on the cover, you might think that this is a book of recipes that are prepared using those two items. This is not the case.Yes, there is a hotplate chapter and a microwave chapter, but a large number of recipes in the other 11 chapters require an oven. And even the microwave and hotplate recipes tend to require counter space, extensive preparation, and a large number and variety of ingredients.
