COOKING FROM QUILT COUNTRY is a pleasure to read. The title comes from the fact that Amish and Mennonite people are famous for their quilt making skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
I'm Jamaican but I love Puerto Rican food, I guess it's because Jamaican and Puerto Rican cooking is pretty similar I guess. There are so many recipes in this book and it's very easy to follow.I first saw this book at my Aunt-in-law's home (She's from P.R) and TiTi Julie told me if I want to learn how to make Arroz con Gandules that I should buy this book and I did.Buy this book, you won'tbe sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Puerto Rican Cookery
I have that book in spanish, because I am from Puerto Rico and my daughter just got married and she wanted the book but she likes it better in English and believe it or not the price was cheaper thru Amazon than in Puerto Rico.
5-0 out of 5 stars PR Cookery....a case of health.
Deep fried?...lol...the person complaining about this as a health issue obviously doesn't know what Puerto Rican cooking is then.Ive been eating my mom's cooking recipes from this book for years, and no one in my immediate family is overweight or obese or unhealthy.Sure things are fried but they are fried at very high heat which keeps the oil from setting in.Plus, Puerto Ricans don't die from fried foods like typical Americans because its different. They actually perform physical labor which uses up those calories, use olive and canola oil instead of your regular vegetable oil, and eat a balanced diet full of locally grown vegetables, fruits, and raised meat. If this person is judging this book becuase of their personal health concerns, then they probably need to judge your typical American cook books and see how unhealthy they are. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "scratch" cook who loves this book!
I have always loved to cook.I also love to make things from scratch, so normally I wouldn't look for a book such as this. However, in anticipation of purchasing a home in the country, at least 15 miles from a grocery store, and with gas prices soaring, I decided to check this out of the library after doing some homework online.I picked this book up today and within an hour I had made, and my family consumed, the corn chowder recipe.I was expecting that "canned" taste what with the evaporated milk and cream corn but it was actually really good.Bread and a salad rounded out a nice meal. Before I decide tobuy a cookbook, I make a list of all of the recipes I would be willing to attempt to serve my family, and if the list is at least 75% of the total recipes in the book, I find it worthwhile to own a copy. There are only about three or four recipes in the this entire book I wouldn't try and even then, I am only opposed to those because they use ingredients that can't really be replaced that someone in the family doesn't like, like the mushroom pate.Overall, the recipes are simple but elegant and would be easy to use for entertaining. This is the kind of cookbook that can appeal to almost anyone and is very helpful if trying to stick to a small food budget, many of the ingredients in this book can be purchased in bulk or at stores like Aldi. Five stars all the way, this may be one of the best cookbooks I have used lately.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Great Quick Meals
Love this one, I'm "on the go" most of the time and this book enables me to have quick and really good meals. The Baked Crab Cakes are outstanding.Grab this one if you want good food that take less time and taste like you spent hours in the kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful format more than makes up for a few bland recipes and dated nutritional advice
I own several cookbooks intended for "solo" cooks, and this is my favorite of the bunch, no contest. The recipe formats are simple and easy to follow, and most of them can be carried out by an inexperienced cook with minimal difficulty and fair-to-excellent results. Furthermore, most of the ingredients called for here are easily found at any full service grocery store; the results are often quite economical. Anyone on a tight budget would do well using this book for a mainstay. The design is a bit soft and feminine for my taste, but I recognize the nurturing vibe being expressed here, and it doesn't cloy or irritate me the way serious self righteous Mennonite cookbooks or hippie tomes like "Diet For A Small Planet" do. This is a great cookbook.
4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
Great recipes. Every dish has the nutritional information. Plenty of fresh ingredients with imaginative combinations. I've made plenty of them and most of them are good. Truly a standout. Pictures of the entrees would be nice though. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FeastFood to Celebrate Life
One of the best cookbooks I ever bougth. It's like a hobbie in itself. I plan to try a different receipe every weekend with great results!.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Feast" gives great inspiration for celebrating life!
In her fifth cookery book, "Feast", Nigella Lawson offers a collection of recipes and occasions to mark our lives. It is her experience that "food is the vital way we celebrate anything that matters" (vii). Before us, then, is a book replete with recipes new and familiar to mark occasions traditional (Christmas, New Year, Easter), foreign (at least from my ethnocentric perspective: Venetian, Eid, and Rosh Hashanah), and fun (Valentine's Day, Breakfast, and Midnight). A feast is not just a meal; it is a condition of an innate human need to mark an event or occasion with those to whom we have a close bond by augmenting it with food.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anything by Nigella is great!!
This was the first book I bought by Nigella Lawson and I loved it so much that I immediately bought every other book by her that I could find. The recipes are great and most of them are very easy to prepare.Besides that, the book is joy to just sit down and read, as are all her books!!!I also should mention all the gorgeous photographs of the food. You'll love this book!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Serves One: Simple Meals to Savor When You're on Your Own
A pretty complete cook book. The beginning is really good for beginning cooks. The recipes are basic and substitues are provided in some cases. The only thing missing is the nutrional values which could be helpful for people with special needs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile and accessible "middlebrow" book for the novice and intermediate solo cook
Even with my limited experience, (but I've dated and lived with some very good, experienced cooks), I can tell that about half the recipes in this book are uninspired, workaday fare. They are there to fill out the pages and create a thicker book that the average cookbook shopper will think gives more "bang" for the buck.
5-0 out of 5 stars Small on perishibles, big on fast successful bites.
What if you're cooking just for yourself? Try the completely revised edition of Toni Lydecker's SERVES ONE: SIMPLE MEALS TO SAVOR WHEN YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN. The tendency is to revert to canned, boxed or fast food when you're alone - or to eat leftovers of the same food for weeks. SERVES ONE presents over a hundred fast bite- sized meals which quick quickly. First build a staples shelf from canned goods and condiments. Then, think small on perishables, shopping for a few days only. Then use SERVES ONE to whip up gourmet delights. Color photos mid-book add to the excitement and appeal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick, creative, delicious
This is BY FAR the most clever cookbook I've ever used.I've had it for a while and just recently decided to use it as it is intended.I followed the shopping list and have been making the recipes for the week.My thoughts:
4-0 out of 5 stars This book is for busy single vegans.
I have been a vegatarian for about 7 yrs. I've always wanted to go vegan, but living with my parents I couldn't. Now that I'm old enough and living on my own, I've made the move to vegan. However, it seemed like I was always eating the same things and I wanted to try some new recipes. Of course being on my own, when I used other cookbooks I had tons of leftovers and was eating them for days. I saw this book while browsing Amazon and liked the fact that it is designed for busy single people.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook Ever
I bought this book for a vegan friend and now want to buy it for myself. It is by far the best book for vegans or people who live alone. The recipes are broken down into a weekly menu with a shopping list at the beginning of each week. All perishable food items are used up within the week, saving money. There is a wide variety of recipes and they are all very simple but full of flavor.I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoy my new beverage of choice. Made from 100% organic soy, taste just like coffee and no caffeine. Finally, I got rid of that wired up feeling all day and feeling great. Look for it on the net by googling "s o yfee". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a magical adventure
I found this book in the bookstore at the Culinary Institute of America while I was waiting for the college's tour to begin. The title caught my attention, and the first paragraph hooked me.After reading parts of it for 10 minutes, I bought it and finished reading it over the next three days.I took my time, savoring each chapter, each conversation, each morsel offered up by this delightful young author.
4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful culinary hunter / gatherer memoir. Read it.
`The Scavenger's Guide to Haute Cuisine' by hunting and fishing sports writer, Steven Rinella is, as another reviewer points out, much less of a culinary memoir than the title may suggest, but that is not, I believe, a legitimate reason to give this memoir a low score.
4-0 out of 5 stars A DIY geek's introduction to hunting and cooking.
I don't read outdoor books, and am only mildly interested in food writing, but I really admire renegade DIY personalities. This book is all about people doing things their own way. From the author to the crazy characters he encounters, this book will inspire you to think about doing things yourself rather than having them done for you.Which is an interesting way of life, to say the least.Maybe I won't build an eel weir anytime soon, but I'm glad to have read about somebody who did. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, maybe; Simple, no.
This cookbook features elegant recipes with long lists of exotic ingredients.Everything looks delicious, but I've only made a couple of recipes because they are not practical for my busy life. To cook from this cookbook, you have to plan ahead, buy unusual ingredients that are sometimes hard to find and are unlikely to be called for in other recipes, and be prepared to put some real time in to prepare the meal.If you enjoy cooking this way as a hobby, you may well enjoy this cookbook. However, if when you cook for yourself, you want flavorful, healthy food without a lot of effort, this is not the cookbook for you.I like the book for browsing through, looking at the pretty pictures, and imagining the recipes all made up.I rarely cook from it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for those with a whole lot of time
So... I don't pretend to be Julia Childs in the kitchen and yes, often I create items which include the suffix n'cheese. I bought this book, expecting to find recipes for those like myself who can't figure out how to reduce ingredients down to a "solo supper," really how do you reduce one egg? Anyhow, I found this book to be out of touch with those who would be most likely to use it. Yes I love a great meal as much as the next person but honestly I will not be cooking duck for myself anytime soon. If you are looking for a cookbook for everyday use for those of us who live alone, I don't recommend this book. If you are someone who likes a multi-course multi-hour preparation meal for you and your lonesome than buy this book immediately.

3-0 out of 5 stars I like it, but it's NOT for everyone
I'm sort of baffled as to how to review this cookbook, because I think it's great for her intended audience, but the marketing is a bit misleading.Someone who is looking for truly SIMPLE meals to make for one person may be a bit dissappointed. So I'll just sum up my impressions of it so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the beginner cook
Great book. Easy to read. Perfect for the beginner cook. Spiral bound so it's easy to fold the pages back. Would be nice to have some sort of menu planner, for example buy the ingredients for one dinner and some of those can be used the next day for lunch or another dinner so I dont have a box of 11 eggs left over. I could dig and find another recipe that calls for eggs too but I'm a begginer cook - I need someone to point me to the next recipe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for poor college students!

5-0 out of 5 stars You don't need any other 'solo cooking' books!
This book reads easily, almost like a novel! I found myself actually reading the non-recipe content as opposed to what I usually do, which is just looking for good recipes.
5-0 out of 5 stars "How to Cook Everything" for Singles
I bought this book about a month ago so I could have a general reference cookbook for single-sized portions.I have found it exactly that; I just made the roasted cornish game hen tonight, and was very impressed. The other recipes in the book sound excellent, and solve a lot of the portion issues I get with other books.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not in my kitchen, not on my stove!
I fancy myself an expert reader, but confess to barely emerging from my novitiate as a chef. I'm busy compiling a library of cookbooks to garnish my newly reacquired bachelor status and freshly cultivated culinary courage. Alas, this particular tome is working its way to dust-gathering status. My most recent experience: I attempted the "Piquant Boneless Chicken Breast," the recipe for which spans pages 132-133. First of all, the split breast at a medium-high heat took far longer than the suggested 4-5 minutes to cook.So perhaps, I thought, the stove was not hot enough. Nevertheless, I allowed some time for the pan to cool to "medium" before adding the garlic and cooking for 30 seconds, as indicated in the recipe. Although the chicken took longer to cook than suggested, allowing me to believe the temperature too low, the cooled pan burned the garlic (and optional added tarragon) almost instantly.Adding the chicken stock and lemon juice produced a scorched brown paste in the pan. Now, I happen to love the taste of burnt garlic and tarragon, and I count lifeless brown among my favorite colors, so I quite enjoyed my dinner, but I'm glad the recipe produced but a single portion. I would never have served this mess to guests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious all the way through
I have had success with the recipes I've tried from this book, so it already wins a thumbs up.But it's the writing that I really have to rave about--in fact, I found myself abandoning whatever novels I was reading at the time and curling up in bed with this book to read instead! It is such a wonderful conversation from someone else who is new to marriage, and her charts, tidbits, and cheese play are amusing and helpful. My husband has taken her suggestions on salt and made them law in our house.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delighted, Charmed and Inspired Newlywed
I received Not On Love Alone: A Year of Delicious Dinners and More for Newlyweds, by Jessie Carry Saunders, as a gift from my mother-in-law and I absolutely adored it! In fact, upon finishing it, I went out and purchased another one as a birthday gift for a friend. I read it like a novel: while the food narratives and recipes are meticulously detailed and delicious-sounding in every way, equally enjoyable are the charming anecdotes about the author's husband (JS), father (Pops), family vacations, and dinner parties, as well as the whimsical illustrations, done, I understand, by the author herself. As a newlywed myself and a culinary novice, I feel inspired by Jessie to tackle and conquer my own kitchen! I'm particularly looking forward to making her chicken noodle soup and her peach bellinis, and as my experience grows, I may even feel confident to tackle her recipe for doughnut bites with chocolate ganache filling! This book is a great read as both a cookbook and a piece of art: I promise you that you will be absolutely charmed and delighted by it, as was I!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Home Cook
I loved this book!Jessie Carry Saunders's writing and recipes combine the elegant authority of Elizabeth David with the infectious enthusiam of Rachel Ray.It's clear she knows and loves her subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burn Like A Pro
When I first bought a house in the Blue Ridge Mountains I found that (being built in 1810) the most efficient and economical way to heat it was with wood. So although I didn't buy this book for the cooking aspects (which proved nice anyway), it was INDISPENSABLE for a beginning wood-burner. You get the low down on maintenance, safety, and a host of other must-have information. Should be required reading with every wood burning stove/heater purchase. Two thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete guide!
We are building a house and I am considering using a wood cook stove outside on the patio, to be used during the summer months, when the inside electric stove would heat up the house, so I bought this book as an introduction to using one. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magisterial epic American cookbook
This cookbook obviously has huge breadth and depth of American cookery -- the cooking that is actually practiced in the kitchens of America, developed here and carried with immigrant cultures, through the centuries of American life up through the twentieth century.
5-0 out of 5 stars the Best american cookery book ever
Wish I had the hardback from the old edition, this edition has a lot morethough they have edited a few that I liked.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic and Still the Best
I have had a copy of this book since it first came out, and it is my favorite cookbook. The recipes are clear and easy to use, and I have always found the little bits of culinary history surrounding them fascinating. My old copy lost its cover years ago, and had splotches of various recipes here and there on the pages, but I loved it anyway.Unfortunately, it got misplaced in a recent move, so I'm buying a new one.Trying to cook without it has brought home to me how many of my favorite holiday recipes--squash casserole, pine nut stuffing, Christmas cookies, etc.--have come from this book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Crackpot Cookery
Rabid anti-immigrant right winger who lied and claimed this book was nominated for both the Pulitzer Prize AND National Book awrd. Neither was true.

2-0 out of 5 stars Add a medieval flair to your modern party
I acquired this book many years ago in the 1970's. I am not sure what may or may not have changed between that edition and the edition (2003) currently being sold. However, the book does provide a wealth of pictures of pre-modern dining and does discuss the traditions and etiquet which might accompany a pre-modern feast. If you are planning one of the popular "12th Night" feasts sometimes found on college and university campuses, you may do well with this book. The recepies are generally popular and do work.
1-0 out of 5 stars Medieval - It's Not
Although this book claims to be a historical reference about 1500c cookery it is not an accurate reference. The recipies are not historically accurate, and the book does not provide the original recipes. [bad], "exploitive", "fantasy" are words that my wife (a food historian) uses to describe this book.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sad Disappointment
I am a serious cook with a large cookbook library. I am a Southerner who made my first biscuits and gravy at age 5. This book is a not-so-well done re-hash of other Foxfires and sorely disappointing. It is difficult to use as a cookbook-more poignant than useful. Also a tad light on recipes. A much better book from North Georgia (Southern Appalachia, like the Foxfire series) is Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread & Scuppernong Wine: The Folklore and Art of Southern Appalachian Cooking. I use this one a lot, enjoy reading the stories, and frequently give it as gift to visiting Yankees. Plus it has the wit, charm, and authenticity so sadly missing from the Foxfire Cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book I use a lot
Got this as a gift and what a treat it is proving to be.It is a book that is really helping me broaden my homesteading skills and I adore the running dialogue and photographs that show the how to's and bring back wonderful memories of growing up.5-0 out of 5 stars History and Cooking:My Two Favorites Together!
I have bought many, many cookbooks not for cooking, but for reading. My favorite format in cookbooks are those where text is woven with recipes; it 'fleshes out' the recipes. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific, must buy!
Best tofu cook book.Recipes are easy, with common ingredients results are very good. One basic theme is to cook tofu in a batter made from a mix of soy sauce and peanut butter.Very tastey.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tasty but time consuming...
I agree with other reviewers that this is a nicely illustrated book with plenty of recipes for those who are new to tofu. The recipes I have tried have been mostly quite tasty (I especially liked the Enchiladas and Barbecued Tofu). However, many of the recipes are very time consuming and/or require frozen tofu, which you may or may not have on hand when thinking about what to make for supper. I like to experiment with these kinds of meals once in a while, butfor the most part, I prefer things to go relatively quickly. Nothing worse than spending a lot of time on a recipe (the To-fu Yung one in this book comes to mind) only to have it turn out so-so. Nonetheless, I do think it's a valuable book to those looking for new ways to prepare tofu.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comfort food veggie style!
There are lots of pictures in this book which is great - all in color. The funny thing is every time I pick it up it reminds me of my childhood - I think its because the photographs have a 70's early 80s look (which is appropriate since that's when the book was first published). The recipes are comfort type foods like Tofu cutlets, falafels, tofu loaf, tofu Foo Young, lasagne, casseroles, sweet & sour tofu, etc.Maybe not everyone would call them comfort foods but they really remind me of the foods we had growing up (except in these versions without the animal parts). I've only tried a few recipes here and there (e.g. Spinach souffle, baked tomatoes, sloppy joes and a few others) but they've all been good so far and the pictures really are great. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bye-bye fast food!
I've had this cookbook since before I was married (many, many years). When I purged my cookbook collection a few years ago I held on to this one because the recipes are so simple and healthy.
