5-0 out of 5 stars a lovely book with timeless recipes
When I pick up a book by Tasha Tudor, I am transported to another way of living...a better way. I love her recipe for potato salad, for cheesy toasts, and ofcourse the Christmas treats which she suggests one serves in beautiful paper cornucopias. Equally as enjoyable as the recipes are the wonderful illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will be a family heirloom cookbook.......
Do not let the whimsical dainty painting on the books cover make you think this is a book for children. It is in fact a book that adults will love. Especially those who love homesteading, simply living, family and friends.4-0 out of 5 stars Tasha Tudor Cookbook

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
This is a great cookbook for anyone.Whether you are just starting or are a seasoned baker. The recipes are fantastic and I haven't made one in the book that my family hasn't loved.Check out the Potato Pizza--it is a favorite for my kids. The instructions are very clear in the recipes and the option to use a food processor or a mixer are also available as well as if you are doing it by hand. This is my right hand in the kitchen.I love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Help!My book is now lined with post-its!...
...and "dog-ears" and whatever else I can use to sve the pages of great recipes!
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good baking book
Whenever I'm going to bake something, I at least take a look in this book to see how he did it. I use this book for the bread and pie recipes mostly. I've not tried any of the cookie recipes, but I have tried a few of the other desserts, and they've been very successful. The best recipes that I've found are the sourdough bread recipe, and the quick puff pastry recipe. The puff pastry never fails to turn out perfectly as long as I follow his directions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Appetizers
The dozen or more recipes tried from this book have been terrific. I am primarily interested in appetizers that can be made ahead, frozen and re-heated. A large number of the recipes fit this criteria. I have bought several copies as gifts for friends based on the recipes I have tried and I've enjoyed this book as much as I enjoy my new beverage of choice. Made from 100% organic soy, taste just like coffee and no caffeine. Finally, I got rid of that wired up feeling all day and feeling great. Look for it on the net by googling "s o yfee".
4-0 out of 5 stars Endless Choices for Parties and Gatherings
My mother swears by all the Junior League Cookbooks which she always relies on for parties and gatherings. This was one of the first of many I tried!!!!Filled with endless choices of creative and easy to prepare starters including cold and hot plates and some ample first courses such as shirimp, crab cakes, cheesecakes, quiches and more--All the ingredients are easy to find and common to most well stocked pantries- so you always can find something at the last minute to prepare!! Also, many of these receipes can be made in even less time if you use pre-chopped veggies,pre-cut meats, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great cookbook!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely adore this book--not only as a cookbook, but as good basic reading material! It is full of delightful stories, quotes, helpful hints, etc....The recipes are very straight forward, and call for loads of fresh produce, which makes for healthier eating.Granted, some of the recipes are a bit 'far out' for me, but seeing as how I am a native Georgian, it is only natural that foods from 'up north' be a little odd for me.But, I try them none-the-less--this book is a favorite of mine!!!Don't put it on a shelf--leave it out on the coffee table!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hollyhocks & Radishes`
Hollyhocks & Radishes is a delightful journal that originated with Judith Chard's Summer roadside vegetable stand in the Upper Pennisula of Michingan. Not only were fresh-grown vegetables available, but also the delicious recipes that could be created with them.Soon customers became friends corresponding with their own recipes and anecdotes. The book is illustrated with handwritten letters and drawings along with Mrs. Chard's wisdom and advice about the season's, birds, flowers, and, of course, her recipes. It's a great book to read on a cold winter's day when you're longing for Summer.Out of our collection of probably 100 cookbooks, this is our favorite. It's always mygift for a Bride-to-Be.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT
The minute I started reading this cookbook it instantly became my favorite! It is full of the best recipies...practical ones that use the freshest ingredients. It is set up so that you can create favorites for each season using what is most readily available.Along with the recipies is a delightful story that is so heartfelt it brought tears to my ears many times.I intend to buy many more copies as gifts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Todd has another hit!
I bought this book based on the fact that I LOVE all of the Top Secret Recipe books published and this one has to be in the top 3. Everything I've tried, my family and I have loved. One of my personal favorites is the [blended coffee drink]. However, the other drinks are just as good. 3-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book. But...
I saw this new book and got it mainly for the cool drink recipes that are in it. We tried several of them at home, but they did not quite taste like the drinks that we get at our local juice store. Maybe it's the ingrediants? Otherwise, the book was interesting. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The maven of the globalization of taste
Robert Parker has over the course of 25 years almost single handedly ruined the diversity in the world of wines. His singular palate and numerical reviews are easy for the average person to understand, but cause all of the wines to be the same: Fruit forward, Big, Tannic and Simple. His career began as a democratic reviewer trying to break into a difficult world, and has morphed to a dictator ruling over a world comprised of thousands of similar and boring wines.I wrote an similar review for another Robert Parker Guide, as I truly feel that almost all of his wines are the same flavor profile. If you don't believe me, do an experiment.Try a highly rated California Cabernet Sauvignon and a Highly rated Bordeaux and try to pick out a difference!!Especially for wines produced with the help of Michel Rolland, who is best friends with Parker and fashions wines catering to his palate in order to get good scores, which of course increases sales and sale prices.
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS LATEST EDITION TAKES WINE APPRECIATION TO ANOTHER LEVEL.
TEN YEARS AGO I WAS PRIMARILY A CALIFORNIA CHARDONNAY AND CABERNET DRINKER, BUT THEN I DISCOVERED ROBERT PARKER, AND MY WINE WORLD OPENED UP TO SO MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF MARVELOUS WINES.
4-0 out of 5 stars Outdated?
The only problem with this edition is that it hasn't been updated since 2002. many fine wines have come out in the succeeding years. Parker likes to focus on French wines, particularly, and not those the average person can afford. While I don't dispute his ratings, most of the wines he reviews are beyond my means to afford. His descriptions of each country and its wine making history are terrific and makes the book worth the price for the education. ... Read more

A wonderful set of recipies that show how they do, and did, cooking on the ranch and trail. Many of the recipies include background material about their origin. Especially interesting were the western and cowboy lore interspersed througout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining as well as tastey
I once bought this book at a Ranch in the South Dakota Black Hills. It has since been misplaced, so I just ordered a replacement copy. The book was outstanding, as the recipe's were framed in vivid historical anecdotes about how they fit into everyday Cowboy life. 5-0 out of 5 stars Folse is the Best!
Thousands of tourists the world over are coming in greater numbers each year to visit the great plantation homes along the lower Mississippi River. They come to romanticize and relive "Scarlett and Rhett."But Ican tell you, Scarlett never ate this well!Folse is a culinary genius.I've flown in people from around the country just to eat at his Lafitte'sLanding restaurant. But if you can't hop a plane for tonight, get the nextbest thing: his cookbook.Frankly, I'm surprised he lets his secrets out!Plantation Celebrations will always be a classic because Folse is aclassic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget Emeril, John Folse is the real thing!
John Folse knows more about Cajun and Creole cooking than do "carpet bagger" chefs like Emeril who come down to New Orleans from the North and try to pass themselves off as experts on Louisiana cuisine. This bookshows Chef Folse as an expert on not only the food, but the people and theculture of Louisiana. If you want to learn how to cook "real"Louisiana food, do yourself a favor and get a couple of Chef Folse'scookbooks.

I expected some simpler Southern cooking because of the title. The recipes might have came from California instead from Atlanta. No thanks, this isn't Southern fixin's.
3-0 out of 5 stars Coca Cola Recipe IS wrong!
The first recipe I tried from this book was the "controversial" Coca Cola Cake-& it was indeed a flop! In researching other versions of this recipe I found that for the icing, this recipe calls for 3/4 cup of cola whereas most others call for approx. 3 tablespoons! No wonder mine looked lake a "floating isle"! Now I'm not sure I trust the other recipes!

M. F. K. Fisher sees life stomach first. Read more

Reviews (10)

1-0 out of 5 stars It's Only Supper, For Crying out Loud
All I knew about MFK Fisher before reading this book was that she was a food writer. This collection of essays portrays a self-absorbed, self-obsessed and self-indulgent silly woman of questionable character.Since she is long-windedand reveals sexual values likely considered loose during her time, it is only natural that she has been elevated to the faux status of fine American writer. (I'm sure feminists love the fact that she walked out on her first husband, near as I can tell to avoid serving marshmallow salads to faculty wives, whom she apparently despised as beneath her intellectual superiority.) I finished the book only because my contempt for the author kept me plodding through her essays. This vain barfly thought she possessed divine insight, but I think it more likely that her insobriety prompted an abnormal amount of self-examination and reflection. Her sentimental gushings reveal an egotistical, pompous, pretentious, shallow, and frivolous woman. What astonished me is that she yammered on about suppers in France endlessly, but made only a passing reference to her second husband losing a leg and then his other three limbs prior to his death. One would think this amount of tragedy and human suffering should command more discussion than a very good bowl of soup. After reading the book, I read some bios of MFK Fisher's life, one of which mentioned her psychotherapist. My insight into her personality proved accurate. I'll think of her when I nuke TV dinners.Celebrating life is not the same as celebrating oneself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Personal Story
Fisher recounts her life through her intimate association with food, growing up, travelling alone to meet her formidable uncle (knowing when to order consom,) eating blue point oysters at a sorority banquet, falling in love with her first husband, living with him in 1930s Dijon at a boarding house where the landlady made ananas au kirsch, divorcing him, nursing another sick husband, being wooed while still married, travelling on cruise liners, watching the rise of the Nazis in Europe, and finally travelling to Mexico in her widowhood. Fisher reveals food as a civilizing force, revelling in its sensual pleasure while remaining starkly aware of a world going wrong. She writes real characters; it's journalism in a short story style, using that technique of fiction. With remarkably serene prose, delicate and sensuous, Fisher shows herself to be a singular woman who understands all too well the foibles of humanity and gracefully counteracts them with an almost pious devotion to the riches and possibilities of elegant cuisine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good follow up to the Bible of Homebrew
True, this book contains a lot of the same info already found in The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing, but buy any two homebrewing books and you're bound to find loads of overlap in material. This book stands on its own as an intermediate book. The material on beer styles others have criticized as 'filler' is absolutely indispensable. With a little effort, you can use these guides to brew accurate recreations of almost any beer style imaginable. In fact, you could call it a condensed version of the entire "Styles" series put out by Brewer's Publications. This book contains much of the useful technical information found in other, practically unreadable texts, in Charlie's relaxed style. If his first book got you excited about homebrewing, this one will fan the flames. Sure there's much more to learn, but this book will help you see the benefit in beefing up your technical understanding of brewing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Regurgitation of old material
After publishing the best introduction to home brewing Papazian released this unenlightening tome. His snappy style, so essential in his first book, sounds dull and contrived. One third of the book is complete filler as he lists 60 pages of various beer styles along with their specific gravities, etc. This information could have been presented in a two page spread.Additionally, he offers little in the way of advanced brewing technique. The one saving grace of this book is the recipe section, with interesting ideas like a lambic barley wine and a raspberry imperial stout. If you are looking for a book that offers a firm overview of all-grain brewing then I can recommend 'Dave Miller's Homebrewing Guide' or Noonan's 'Brewing Lager Beer.'Papazian'sbook will most likely be a complete disappointment.

3-0 out of 5 stars More info on brewing beer
This is Charlie Papazian's second book on the subject of homebrewing. I found this book to be more technical in nature than Papazian's first book, "The new Complete Joy of Homebrewing",and not quite as entertaining to read. Nevertheless, this book is still useful as a reference tool and it does have some good recipes. Cheers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Interesting! A great gift!
I ordered this book to give away as a door prize. When it arrived, I glanced through it, but was so captivated that I sat down and read through the entire book immediately (even though I had/have no plans to ever cook any of the food) -- it was a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of Frida, Diego and others. Then I ordered three more to give as gifts to friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!!!
I love this book. It's great . . . I love the stories, the pictures, and the recipes instructions are very clear. I recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Tasty Addition to my Frida Kahlo Library
I'm a huge Frida Kahlo fan, and this is much more than a mere recipe book. While Hayden Herrera's biography gave us the flavor of Frida's life, Frida's Fiestas gives us the flavor of her kitchen, bringing those of us who wish to know more about the artist and the woman just a little bit closer to sharing and understanding her life.Frida celebrated life to it's fullest; her favorite recipes and the artistic way they are presented on the pages of this book are a celebration as well. Viva la Vida! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book creates its own world, a feeling of France in the 19th cent.
This is one of my favorite books in the whole world, not because of any one thing, but because of how its different parts hinge together to stand you right in the middle of a completely creative spirit. You can get lost in the pages and sense Monet's life. His gardens, the notes on food, the kitchen. It is a large book, perfect for a lap. Sit with it and list-making tools. Think of a kitchen in another time, when food was beautiful and flavors strong and true. I have made the green cake (vert-vert) and it was pretty good, amazingly pretty. The recipes chew at the back of your mind and then you find yourself making something from it on a rainy day when you have also bought flowers at the grocery. If you get this book you will probably buy flowers at the grocery from then on, and that will make you happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cook's Paradise.
As a lover of the Impressionist movement, I felt compelled to make the pilgrimage to the house of Claude Monet located a few miles north of Paris in the small town of Giverny, Normandy. Monet's refuge is a shrine of the art world renowned for its beautiful and expansive garden filled with flowers, trees, a lake and its famous bridge. 5-0 out of 5 stars What recipes!
I asked for this book for Christmas after glancing through it at the Bostom Museum of Fine Arts.Monet's one of my favorites, and the biographical stuff (about a third of the book) is fine.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I swear by the Betty Crocker Cookbook. I got mine before I got married (over five years ago), and I am always referring to it for tips, techniques and everyday recipes that you can't find in ordinary books/magazines. I kinda want a new one now 'cause it's even more detailed (I have the 9th Edition). Highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
This is probably one of the best cook books for new home makers (just married) or beginning hobbyist cookers (men or women). It is well written and properly indexed.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the Basics Plus More!
This cookbook is a must-have for every person who ever uses a kitchen. It has all the basics, like how long to bake a potato or cook a chicken, that young people away from home for the first time (or those of us with bad memories) need. But it also has delicious recipes for the braver sorts and even nutritional info for the diet conscious!People have called me from across the country for recipes from this book.I have used it more than any other cookbook by 100 times.Everything I have ever made from this book has been a hit.Betty has my highest recommendation. ...
