5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite
This cookbook is INCREDIBLE!I got it for my birthday 10 years ago and have tried at least half of the recipes in it -- and my copy is battered enough to prove it.I especially recommend the Tapenade, Turkish Spinach & Lentil Soup, Sayra's Greens, Pasta e Fagioli, Pepperpot Soup, Mocha Pecan Pie, Galletas de Nueces, Polvorones de Canela, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Pulla, Ukrainian Almond Crescents (OK, so I have a sweet tooth). The best gift I've ever gotten!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Cookbook for Beginning Cooks
I purchased this cookbook about 15 years ago - - a little while before I moved out on my own.I purchased "The Joy of Cooking" and "The Silver Palate" at the same time. This is an excellent cookbook.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really great book!
I've used this book so many times that the binding is cracked. There are post-it notes sticking up from too many pages to count. And the book automatically opens to my favorite recipe, Pasta e Fagioli. It is my idea of the ultimate comfort food, and I cannot count how many times we've enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick preparation and delicious!
Love the binding on this book.Very good recipes.Ingredients you usually have on hand. Will suggest it to friends.

1-0 out of 5 stars Busy People should eat better than this!
I own a lot of cookbooks and have honestly never purchased a more ridiculous book. Seven ingredients or less, yes - it's easy when you're using canned soup, prepared chili or bottled marinade. The recipes feature a lot of processed ingredients too like non-dairy creamer for potato chowder. And I don't need a slow cooker to make tea - 8 teabags, water, mint extract and splenda - 2 hours in the old slow cooker and voila, you have something that should take ten minutes to make. Convenient - maybe, Easy - yes, Delicious, no way.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Cookbook Is Great!!!!!
First of all, if you purchase the book, read the story at the beginning of the cookbook. Dawn Hall, the author, put together her cookbooks to help support her family when her husband had Cancer and then passed away. Now, other families who have a family member with cancer or other organizations can use her cookbook's to sell and raise money for their charitable organization's.Her family's story is an incredibly inspirational one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes for Bad Cooks
All of Alton's recipes have turned out great and I'm no great cook! The discussions about food and how/why it cooks under certain conditions helps me to better understand what I'm doing in the kitchen when the cookbook says to 'simmer' or to 'braise.' Normally these words don't make sense to me in cookbooks and my recipes don't turn out well. Alton generally avoids using these in his recipes unless he's described them in the chapter. Highly recommended book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Alton's Cookbook
It wasn't what I expected because there are not many recipes. However, he explains the rationale behind the mechanics of cooking and tells you how to achieve desired results, which can be applied in any situation. We are pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Typical Alton Brown...and that ain't a bad thing!
Much like its companion, this book retains much of Alton Brow's typical Good Eats flair while successfully adapting it for print. Not much is lost in the tranfer from film to paper. The recipes are easy to follow, the explanations are, as always, informative, and the humor is...well, humorous. I've got the Director's Cut on preorder (I am, after all, a Good Eats fanatic), and I can't wait or more in the future! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I kind of had my doubts about this book. My boyfriend and I have occasionally stopped by her show on PBS to mock her husband's guitar playing. Next time we might restrain ourselves - all the recipes we've tried from this book have been wonderful!
5-0 out of 5 stars More please!
Ideal for anyone who wishes to obtain information on whole foods without arousing suspicion.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really love this book!
Christina is so great at what she does when it comes to cooking with whole foods. Her recipes in this book are easy and you can find the ingredients in any Whole Foods market. She really explains why it's so important to eat the right foods and why organic cooking is so much healthier. This book is wonderful. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars cute but disappointing
I think the black and white episodes of the Andy Griffith Show are probably the best examples of American TV ever made, so I was thrilled to order this book. There are no photos at all which makes it tedious to flip through. Also, every recipe insists on having a character's name in the title. It's cute for the first few pages but gets tiresome very quickly. I can't imagine Ernest T. Bass cooking anything and if he did I don't believe I would want to try it. However, there are many, many pieces of dialogue reproduced exactly as they were said on the show and it is delightful to read them! How funny simple American dialect can be... This book is a fun momento of the classic Americana sitcom, but don't expect to cook much from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waited for Years for This...
I've seen this cookbook sold in book collector's magazines, but always lost track of how to get it. I am so glad to add it to my collection of cookbooks. I plan to try most of the recipes, but will leave the possum recipes to the Darlings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great comfort favorites!
I received this cookbook as a shower gift ten years ago from my 90-something year old great, great aunt.At the time, I thought it looked a bit hokey...it just goes to show that we young cooks have so much to learn from those that have gone before us!It has all of my family's favorites -- it is usually the place that I can find the recipe for all of those good things I remember from my childhood.I have over 60 cookbooks, and it is one of my most-used!This one is a "must-have". ... I have owned this cookbook for a number of years and out of all my cookbooks it is my most used one.I know that anytime I make any recipe in this book, it will be excellent and have no hesitation making a recipe the first time for guests. The recipes are basic yet at the same time are not. They are all excellent.A must have cookbook in a person's collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to your library
This is one of the first cookbooks I ever purchased. It is a cookbook that I don't necessarily pick up and say lets make something, but it is more of a reference. If I am wondering how to make something traditional or specific I will generally check this book out along with others. It is definitely one of the books I give great respect to and would not be without. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars La Varenne Pratique by Anne Willan [Hardcover]
Seller was fast and i recieved my book ahead of schedule. Would buy from seller again!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I keep recommending this book
La Varenne Pratique by Anne Willan bristles with more than 2500 full-color photographs. Willan is the founder of the famed Ecole de Cuisine La Varenne in Paris. Her standard are high, yet the text is as crystal-clear as her consomm. I opened the book at random just now to be dazzled by a two-page, twelve-photograph spread on just how to remove lobster meat from the shell. The instructions for complex operations like boning a leg of lamb, shaping a braided loaf of bread, baking fish in parchment paper, share quarters with basics like properly shelling peas, lining a pie mold, or testing the doneness of pan-fried meats.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good guide to Moroccan food!
When we got this book, my husband looked through every page from cover to cover with excitement. He took a pencil and circled all of the recipes that he loved, or sounded good to him.He circled a large portion of the book!!I have grown to love Moroccan food since I got married, and more so since our trip to Morocco! The only down side is that there isn't that large of variety of recipes.I am searching for more variety, since my husband only wants a certain few moroccan meals.I will never get rid of this book!I love it, and it makes a great foundation for your Moroccan cooking library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tears of Joy
Greetings Amazon Readers: Back before there was an "amazon.com." I fell in love with Moroccan food (and decor) after visiting a local Moroccan restaurant in the Los Angeles area. I quickly gave my living room a Moroccan makeover and patiently waited for the book to arrive by mail from the publisher in New York. When I opened it tears of joy dropped onto the title page (true).

This cookbook is incredible! It is definitely well worth every penny and the best Moroccan cookbook Amazon.com has available.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't judge a book by its pictures
My first reaction after receiving and flipping through the pages was, "What!"."No color photographs?"Well shame on me because this book is so well written, I never missed the absence of color photos. The decorating idea sketches are great and, again, the author did a great job of writing this book for beginners and intermediate as well. You won't find yourself scratching your head saying, "Huh??".I wonder what she means by that?"I'm hooked on gingerbread houses now and have made 6 in the last 3 weeks. The chapter on making your own patterns was also put to the test.My patterns came out perfect following the directions in this book.Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!This is the start of a new Christmas tradition at my house. 5-0 out of 5 stars All Fun No Worries
Among the pages of chimney tips is the line "If it's a little crooked, that's okay, it only adds to the charm of the house." (p.44)Among the ideas for fences she mentions "Gates are useful if you're making a pattern in your fence and don't have quite enough room for that last pattern. That's a good place for a gate!" (p.86) And her favorite place to practice piping icing? Her kids hands. This is an author who knows how to take a potentially stressful, overwhelming project and make it what it's supposed to be: pure enjoyment.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas but could use photos
Even though this book did not have any photos it was still helpful and gave some good ideas. The author includes drawings of different ideas such as doors, windows, and a mailbox (made out of a tootsie roll).I wanted to make some houses and sell them during the holidays and the author gives some tips on doing this at the end of her book.I borrowed this from the library but now plan to buy it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I cannot believe I only paid 14 bucks for this book.................
If you are looking for a good technique reference, then this is the book to get. Jacques Pepin is from the old European school of apprenticing for chefs. In this style of culinary education, the candidates start from about the age of 13 or 14, go to school during the day and work in resturaunts at night under the guide of experienced chefs. The education they recieve is hands-on and intense. Pepin draws from this and from his years of personal experience to produce this wonderful reference. The instructions are simple and straight-forward and include step by step photos for everything from knife skills, to how to prep a veal brain! Mr. Pepin's love of food is obivious here, as is his absolute joy for teaching others his amazing skills.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for culinary techniques, some not quite so common
I heard about this book in an interview with Tom Colicchio (from the show Top Chef). It's the basic book(s) that he used to teach himself the techniques to build him into the chef that he is today. It has many useful techniques, and a few that are outrageous to try unless you have tons of time and the guts to do it (skinning a hare to cook it?).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any one who like to cook.
Not just a step by step photos to demonstrate the techniques but a very useful experiences for every one who like to cook. As a Chinese reader & cooking tutor, I haven't read a book like this before. Mr Pepin really show me the skill in details(For example, remove the bones from a whole chicken. This skill almost a secret in Chinese world!) & willing to share his kitchen experience with every one. No secret to hide !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tried, Trusted, and True...
I grab for this cookbook every single time I need cook.I did not know how to cook before this book.Left the crinkle skin on the garlic when I made salsa... Yuck!Heck, it wasn't spelled out in the recipe so I didn't know...This is how bad I used to be.This cookbook explains, in intimate detail, just about anything and everything that is in the kitchen, including food and utensils. The recipes are simple and made from things most everyone will have in the kitchen. This is NOT a dieter's cookbook as most recipes call for a large amount of fat.In our mouths, fat is responsible for most of the taste. If loosing weight is your goal, you will need to find a different book, or you will be disappointed. If you want simple, tasty, flavor-filled recipes that even a beginner can follow, this book is highly recommended.I have made everything from pot roasts, to birthday cakes, to punches, to grilled shrimp and BBQ rubs.I have yet to be disappointed.Best of luck and Bon Appetite!I LOVE THIS BOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, Good Recipes
Whenever my daughter and I have a question about techniques or ingredients, we're the most likely to find a useful and clearly presented answer here. And while the title is overblown, the variety of recipes is amazing - kasha varnishkes to chicken cacciatore. 5 stars for the information presented, 3-4 for the recipes. A welcome tool for fledgling foodies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Recipes need changing!
The person who wrote this cookbook obviously likes everything fatty and unsweetened. I found this cookbook useful only if I changed just about all the recipes by reducing the fat content by half, and doubling the amount of sugar.

I'd never heard of Jay Kordich, but from his bio in the book he's REALLY dedicated to the concept of juicing -- a pioneer, really. I definitely think it's a good book if you're just starting out.In the back it gives you a lot of info about the different vitamins and minerals what fruit/vegetable has it and how it helps your body.I actually ordered this book for someone else, and they were so grateful.Bottom line is it's not a waste of money.Good Luck everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nany Oakes is a Goddess!
It is sad for me to see so many "bad" reviews for this wonderful cookbook; I think Nancy Oakes and her crews have done a fabulous job in sharing her delicious recipes.Grand it I have just started cooking for less than a year, sometimes the recipes are challenging and overwhelming but with patient I was able to follow the recipes and cooked wonderful meals with it.The gig for me has been grazing the farmer markets and seafood stores every Saturday for the ingredients to cook from this book for my family, so far I have done more than ten of her recipes, and let me tell you, they are all fabulous.Cheers to Nancy for sharing!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Suitable for Home Use
I'll be brief:this lavishly-designed book is eye-candy, straight up.It is the quintessence of that lamentable recent breed of art-house "cook"books that are far better on the coffee table than on the kitchen counter. One overwrought, decorative, fussy recipe follows another in a titilating but ultimately boring succession of vanity shots.Basically, this book and its ilk are an extension of the interior decorating market: if you print it, they will come.Any experienced cook can glance through this book and instantly dismiss its recipes as outrageously unsuited to the domestic kitchen. Very silly indeed. But nice pix!!!

This is a beautiful book for the coffee table but forget the kitchen unless you have a brigade of chefs. Most of the ingredients are special purchase not something you would have in your pantry. A cup of blood anyone?? And what the hell is "paradise" as in "a few grains of paradise". I can't even find that one in my dictionary of foods and cooking terms. I am an excellent cook with more than 40 years of cooking experience Thomas Kellers "The French Laundry" was workable, albeit complicated. A cup of blood anyone, I think I have 1 left after paying more than $35.00 plus $8.00 shipping for this book. (not from Amazon) Amazon I have learned my lesson I will write 500 times I will not buy books from any source other than Amazon and I will not pay shipping on purchases over $25.00 Thank You!!! However I will keep this book and frame it as a reminder never to purchase thru over priced cook book clubs. Membership now canceled. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Service than the Restaurant
Although there are a few dishes at Daniel's which I wish were present in this book, this book contains recipes which are highly enjoyable both to make as well as to consume.4-0 out of 5 stars Instructions are clear, combinations inventive and tasty.
I have only prepared one dish that fell short of genius (winter vegetables - despite the selection of vegetables, a little bland). His desserts (the blueberry brioche brings restaurant quality into your kitchen) arewonderfully inventive.Photos accompany many of the recipes and each foodsection contains an index of dishes to follow. This is the first book Iturn to when I am in the mood for a challenge that I know I can complete. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource for foodstuffs
This is a great food sourcebook.It doesn't have recipes - it's not a cookbook.
4-0 out of 5 stars natural goodness defined
The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia is the holy grail to anyone embarking on a healthier, greener diet. Wood carries a relaxed, conversational tone through tales of sugar snap pea goodness or the brief history of quinoa, and I love her attention to detail in pointing out surreptitiously refined sugars in the most seemingly safest foods. At times, the lecture waxes a tad over-preachy, but the sheer breadth of foods covered, from South American grains to Asian legumes, makes this book a must-have for any cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent whole foods primer
Sometimes, the trick with books of this nature is being able to find the information you are looking for quickly and easily. There are a number of other books on the market that contain much the same information as this book does (in more detail) but what sets The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia apart is its remarkable ability to simplify the key information down to the most essential basics. Elson Haas' Staying Healthy With Nutrition for example, is an excellent resource but at nearly 1000 pages it requires a bit of digging to get to the specific information you need. The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia is always the first place I check for the basics before researching more specialized, detailed sources. It's to natural food what Ephraim Katz' Film Encyclopedia is to film...namely, the best resource for concise, general overviews.

Editorial Review

When Marta Sgubin joined Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's household in 1969, she thought her job as companion to John Jr. and Caroline Kennedy temporary. Twenty-five years later, she was still with the family, as cook, household manager, and friend to "Madam," who urged Sgubin to compile her repertoire of simple but elegant dishes. Sgubin's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This book is like a glimpse into LIFE ON THE OTHER SIDE..! What elegance!! Mrs. Onassis....what a lady..After perusing the recipes..I wonder how my diet is...(not good) I don't think much of us put the time and effort into the COOKING like the author does..Wow! What a book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great format
This is an amazing book. You feel like you're right there in the home with them. The public Mrs. Onassis was a very graceful and dignified lady. This book gives you a little peek at another side. I really enjoyed reading that she enjoyed looking at Marta's seed catalogs every spring.Because of these 2 ladies, John and Caroline grew into some very nice adults. The food pictures are so lovely...you want to try each and every recipe. This is such a good format mixing the recipes and memories and telling the stories behind the dishes. This is one book I don't loan to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars a reader
like most everyone else i bought this book hoping for more of an inside glimpse into jacqueline kennedy onassis' life wondering what kind of food someone who had been everywhere and experienced almost everything life has to offer would have at home.what a pleasant surprise to find she enjoyed foods all of us can prepare at home without too much muss or fuss.who would have thought shepherds pie or brownies!what i found made the book a must for me though, is the antedote about aristotle onassis and the chocolate cake.i actually laughed.i can see why ms. sgubin fit into this family so nicely because she herself is so charming and kind.i think you'll enjoy "cooking for madame"even if you don't cook simply because it revisites someone we liked having in the world community so much.kudos marta! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars mixed bag, cook at your own risk!
I've tried many recipes in her Modern Classic I book and I have to say it's a love hate relationship with her books. They are gorgeous and inspiring to look at (5 stars), but instructions or results can sometimes be disappointing (2 stars). I always recommended her books to friends with a warning (great looking books but the measurement and instructions can be inaccurate, cook at your own risk!). Some instructions are so streamlined to the point of skipping seasoning all together, and dishes came out beautifully to the eyes but are totally bland to the taste. Her Asian recipes are not authentic either, when cross referencing other books with the same recipe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy with Donna Hay's recipe books.
They are beautiful, they have elegant and -- more important -- easy recipes with an international flair.I am considered a gourmet cook by others...and I couldn't be happier with this and her other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
I first discovered Donna Hay's work about two years ago, and I just love her books! The simplicity is blended with her amazing creativity, and every recipe is a knockout!I have always loved simplicity, and I love how it shines through in this book, and isn't lost with the goal to prepare amazing dishes fast.Donna Hay has another winner with this one! ...
