4-0 out of 5 stars More than just a cookbook
I bought this book mostly for the recipes. It is full of the "philosophy according to Ted" (which I love by the way). The book may leave you wanting more if all you want is a wild game cookbook.I do have to say that the recipes are excellent. My kids beg for the Deer Stroganoff. It is also one of my all-time favorite dishes to eat with the deer that I harvest.I have tried several recipes from the book and all were accurate and very tasty. Thanks to Uncle Ted for creating more than a cookbook - I read from it while I am cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading This Book is a Meal in Itself
I don't hunt and haven't yet prepared big game dishes, but I'm always on the lookout for new recipes with which to expand my repertoire. This book made me resolve to take up cooking big game.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Man'sCookbook
As my husband loves to hunt wild boar and wild duck, I bought this book for him as a farce. However, it has turned out to be a great purchase. We both were at a loss as how to clean, store and cook wild game until "Kill It and Grill It" came along. This is the only cookbook I've bought that my husband hasn't complained about and it's an entertaining and "colorful" read as well. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hard work with a payoff
I bought this book after examining its beautiful pages various times at the bookstore.Last night I cooked from it for the first time.It was a lot of effort, but it did pay off.Last night I made the Deviled Chicken Thighs. My work began Sunday with four trips to different stores to assemble the various necessary ingredients.Yep, two supermarkets, the liquor store, and a bodega (I live in Jersey City, just outside Manhattan). Then the next day was the cooking.Altogether it took me about four hours for that part of the task.Honestly, halfway through I seriously considered giving up.But I persevered, the author's directions are very precise and very clear, so I just concentrated on completing each step. When I was done, my kitchen smelled wonderful (between peals of the smoke alarm set off by the cooking of chicken in oil) and I had a beautiful and delicious meal to serve. So, my thoughts are this . . . don't pick this book if you expect a quick and easy meal to toss onto the table. This is serious cooking and it takes a lot of work and dedication to get through it.But, wow, when you are done, you feel like you've climbed a mountain, and you have this wonderful meal to show for your efforts.Also--now that I have been through the entire recipe, I bet I can do it again, with much less effort and pull it off again more easily.Meaning -- I learned some things about cooking while working my way through it.Not something you can say about a lot of cookbooks.I'm going to put this book aside for a month or so, and then carefully pick a recipe and do it all again.I recommend this book heartily to someone who is interested in cooking and most of all LEARNING.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!Fun to read and inspiring
I really like this book. I has it all!!--beautiful to look at, fun to read, and very inspiring. It is set up nicely too, by season, so you will use the freshest ingredients. For me, having the menus laid out is very helpful. We will have some fabulous meals from this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Elegance
This is a gorgeous book and the recipes are simple, quirky, thoughtful and elegant. It's perfect for someone who doesn't have hours so spend in the kitchen, but is looking for something new.It is organized around the seasons, and the emphasis is on market-fresh ingredients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best cookbook I've purchased in a long time
My new thing is to check out books from the library first, then buy. This technique has saved me hundreds of dollars.I'd take out a book I really wanted to buy, and after browsing, only liked a handful.Well, this cookbook was so incredible from start to finish, that I quickly returned it to the library and bought my own copy.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not her best
This is Paula Deen's first cookbook that gets the "star treatment" - nice hardcover, beautiful color photos of some of the mouth-watering menus, and a nice format. She has arrived! However, I don't think it is necessarily her best content-wise. Her previous books, the little paperback editions with the plastic ring binders, have far more recipes and feel more "intimate," if there is such a thing with a cookbook! This book features sample party menus and have titles like "A Bridge Club Supper" and "A Georgia Bulldawg Parking Lot Tailgate." Most of these feature a main entree, a few side dishes, an appetizer or two and a dessert. The chocolate sandwich cookies (on page 94) and the pimento cheese spread (page 40) are two recipes that are delicious and very easy to make. Some of the recipes, including the chocolate sandwich cookies, didn't originate with Paula and she says so in the introductions to the menus. ... Read more

Marold's review is spot on and I recommend and concur with it; it does a salient and well written job of describing this book and its culinary context among other sandwich cookbooks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Sandwich Book. Buy It Now!
`Simple Italian Sandwiches' by Jennifer and Jason Denton and Kathryn Kellinger contains recipes from the New York City restaurants `ino' and `inoteca', which happen to be a small part of the growing Mario Batali / Joe Bastianich empire of restaurants. They are such a small part that their names are based on the Italian suffix that means `small'.

5-0 out of 5 stars A meal in itself...
This book is delicious! There are excellent photos of both the dishes and the different areas and peoples of the Silk Road,The text is interesting, with information about history, cultures, cooking techniques, and food items.I appreciate that the recipes are not complicated or particularly labor-intensive.I have tried three so far, and all three were hits.I have a large collection of cookbooks, but if I had to start all over again, this one would be one of my first buys.

5-0 out of 5 stars spectacular and delicious
this is a beautiful book with somewhat complex recipes but educational. my friend borrowed it to use it in her geography class covering the silk road topic. the pictures are spectacular. it is classified as paperback but the quality of paper and print make it as durable and beautiful as a hardback. i strongly recommend this book not just for the wonderful recipes also to amuse your eyes. let your imaginations travel!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike
This beautiful and highly readable cookbook contains delicious, if somewhat complex, recipes for dishes from Italy to China. All of them are vegetarian, but many could be adapted to meat eaters, or used as an accompaniment. If used as an accompaniment, bear in mind that the cookbook is targeted to vegetarians who plan to make th main dish the bulk of their meal; double the number served if used as an accompaniment. If you love to cook, this book will inspire you and add variety to your repetoire. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Easily The Best Book On Sushi This Side Of The Rising Sun
Okay, I was going to add some faux-Japanese ambiance here by writing a haiku for my review but it's easier to get half credit by mentioning that I almost did. Moving along, this is as I said the best of several books I've read on the art of making sushi. Not only is the technique of creating sushi carefully explained, but the history of how this most lovely of culinary art forms came about is covered in copious detail. The illustrations here showcase what a master sushi chef can achieve as far as presentation, and of course no effort is spared by the authors in proclaiming the simple truth that sushi is one of the most delicious foods in existence. I have no idea why it took so long for the appreciation of sushi to infiltrate American culture but thank goodness it's finally here. Now that it is, this book can take you to the next frontier, and that is your own personal liberation from the need for another person to prepare your sushi for you. With this book, you can make your own and do it for a fraction of the cost of buying it at a restaurant. It may not look as pretty at first, but umm, it'll be tasty. Yes, it takes confidence to take up the bamboo rolling screen that initial time, but trust me, you can do it and this patient how-to book will get you through from dream to presentation. Soon you'll be serving sushi at every gathering and your friends, co-workers and relatives-by-marriage will be just plain amazed. "Why this sushi thing isn't disgusting at all!" your significant other's Great Aunt Minnie will proclaim while you blush with pride. I seriously liked this book and have bought two more copies to give out to friends this Christmas season. Anything I can do to proliferate the embracing of sushi--metaphorically speaking--by the US public I'll gladly do. I hope after reading The Complete Book Of Sushi, you feel the same. What's left to say? Well, get this book. It's good and it's the one you've been looking for. Trust me. ... Read more

I just got this book after waiting for a few months and was quite thrilled to see familiar names and places mentioned.Being a distant family member, I am probably prejudiced but I think this book is a fascinating read, especially for someone brought up in Delhi. The book even has a family tree in the beginning, going back to the 1500s.As in all her books, Madhur Jaffrey manages to give her recipes a very easy to do feel and very helpful hints for people like us living in the US and I am dying to try out the recipes.Enjoy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SimpleYetGreatRecipes
I borrowed this book from my local library and enjoyed it so much that I purchased my own copy.Every recipe is tasty and not very difficult to put together.I own quite a few cookbooks, and this is one I refer to over and over. What a find!
5-0 out of 5 stars Artistic, simple, unpretentious
This is a beautiful and useful book, simplicity itself, that is written in a way that is as poetic, soulful, simple, and unpretentious as the cuisine it explores. The book instructed me not only how to prepare these dishes technically, but also how to appreciate their profound artistic and culinary value. As a great amateur of all things Middle-Eastern, this book is one of my most prized posessions.

5-0 out of 5 stars the essence of Moroccan cooking
While living in Morocco for six months, I learned to cook with my host mother. When I returned home I began to look for a cookbook with which to recreate my experiences. I hoped to find something that included both simple staples and more elaborate recipes that show off the potential complexity of Moroccan flavoring. I looked through a lot of cookbooks both here and in France (where there is a large Maghrebi community), and finally decided that this book was the best of the lot.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars refreshing
I read this one right after finishing Julia Child's memoirs. What a great decision! I fell in love with Julia then fell in love with Julie. This is a funny book, meant for those interested in cooking and for those who never will put a pan on the fire but just like a good underdog story. You won't get direct recipes (though you will get loads of good advice, like stay away from aspic) but if you're looking for detailed directives you should go to the source anyway and order Mastering the Art of French Cooking. This book is about accomplishing what you set out to do. It sounds simple, but most of us wallow in excuses and self-pity, things Julie tries valiently to avoid.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun, irreverent read
I read this book under the old title, too-- still not sure how folks might have mistaked it as a cookbook!Or a "serious" food book. The author has an irreverent, caustic, yet accessible style of writing that I could really relate to and enjoy-- even though I do not at all aspire to ever attempt a similar project in my life. However, it has inspired me to look at my life and perhaps attempt to do something which might not make a bit of practical sense, but may enrich me in unforeseen ways as the Julie/Julia Project did for the author. This woman reminds me of a close friend which helped me to enjoy it all the more.It does seem aimed towards a "younger" crowd.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun
This book had its ups and downs, but mostly it was a fun read. The author is young and disillusioned, and she expresses a lot of anger in the book that she was feeling at the time. But I found it to be about living a weird life in New York City at a weird time, doing a weird project. It is certinly not a cookbook as some reviewers have mistaken it for, and it is really not that much about cooking. Be prepaired for angst. I liked it. It also uses a lot of bad language, which I liked at times, but others may not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From a weekend barbecue warrior
Let me first say that I love barbecuing, and I guess you do, or you wouldn't even be checking this or any other barbecue book. I try to grill my family dinners almost every weekend, so I would have to say that I have put on thousands of barbecues this far. I consider this book great because with the recipes on it I can try every now and then to make something a little bit different (I guess just to avoid a mutiny among my family crew, Ja Ja).

Great book!! Not only are there over 400 great grilling recipes but recipes for rubs, sauces, and more. The writer also shares some historical information throughout the book making it a great read. Steve Raichlen's PBS show is the companion to this book, as many of the recipes are in there. Considering the price at Amazon this book is a lot of bang for the buck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Success!
Am an admitted Chiarello fan but also a serious, experienced cook.Found this new book to be as good as his last one.Love the pantry recipes - having these extras onhand make the ordinary extraordinary just like he promised.Best section is the side dishes. If you are looking for new dishes for your vegetables, this is a great source. Most are good enough to stand on their own and do in this carnivore's home frequently. If you like things just a little different - buy this book. The recipes are clear, the writing entertaining and your friends & family will be impressed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good recipes, beautiful photography and plenty of unique ideas on serving.
To be honest I don't watch many of Michael's shows but the book is beautiful and perfect for those who are constantly on the lookout for entertaining recipes and ideas.
1-0 out of 5 stars WHERE does The Food Network get these people???
Michael Chiarello needs to stick with the non-Italian dishes because dude doesn't have a clue how to pronounce Italian nor, to compund the problem, does he know the reason why he cooks the Italian dishes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food that tastes fattening - but isn't
I was just looking over my earlier cookbook reviews. They say things like "I have lost 70 pounds..." and "Now that I have lost 80 pounds..." Well, by now I have lost over 90 pounds and I've learnt a lot about nutrition along the way. I've learnt that "good fats" and "good carbs" are best for our bodies and sustained weight loss. Many low-fat cookbooks are full of recipes featuring sugar and other processed carbs, while low-carb cookbooks often overlook all the calories in fat. Spa-type cookbooks like the Canyon Ranch and Golden Door series give you the best of both worlds - food that is calorie-conscious, healthy and delicious.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cookbooks I've ever had
Everything I cook in this cookbook is delicious. I can serve the recipes for parties and no one knows it's "healthy" in a diet-like way. Very interesting sophisticated combination of ingredients create wonderful tastes that have helped my husband I keep our weight down without deprivation. I think I've made the majority of recipes, and this is from someone that doesn't cook a lot. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book could change your life...
If you are like me you struggle daily making compromises between great food and healthy living. This book and a week at Canyon Ranch in AZ taught me that you don't have to make that compromise!
