5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes in a quality book
The recipes I've tried from this book so far have produced restaurant delicious meals with some but not ridiculous effort.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb is understatement...
I'm a Yankee who is a very good cook, specializing in French and Italian fare. I've married a Southerner whose mother is a superb Southern cook. My husband heard about this book and felt it would be a good blend for me... so I bought it and made several of the recipes in it for my mother-in-law, including some things which are her staples. (Took guts, that did... but it worked!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb addition to any gourmet's cookbook collection
Superbly illustrated throughout with gorgeous color photography of finished dishes that would spark any appetite, Frank Stitt's Southern Table: Recipes And Gracious Traditions From Highlands Bar And Grill is the kind of coffee-table cookbook that is as much fun to browse through as it is inspiring to prepare a menu with. From Ravioli with Sweet Potatoes, Mustard Greens, and Country Ham; Smoked Trout Salad with Blood Oranges, Avocado, and Frisee; Quail Stuffed with Corn Bread and Figs with Molasses Vinaigrette; and Rabbit Stuffed with Apple Duxeles; to Old-Fashioned Potato Gratin; Eggplant Stuffed with Summer Vegetables; Jack Daniel's Chocolate Ice Cream; and Almond Macaroons, the recipes comprising this superb addition to any gourmet's cookbook collection range from the complex to the simple, transforming any mealtime occasion from routine to extraordinary!

5-0 out of 5 stars Woktabulous!
With my wife's recent interest in Thailand and a pending trip to boot, I picked up Quick & Easy Thai.I still figure one of the best ways to understand a different culture is through a full belly.Quick & Easy Thai has one of my most important prerequisites for a good cookbook...great pictures.Although I have only made a handful of dishes, the pictures which adorn the pages of this well constructed book beg to have me make more.
5-0 out of 5 stars It really is quick & easy!
I'm a college student who grew up in a family where the most elaborate meal we had was chili dogs, so needless to say I didn't pick up a lot of culinary skills. At first I was worried that the recipes would be too complicated or exotic for me, but my boyfriend and I love asian cuisine so we thought we'd give it a shot. I'm so glad I bought this cookbook! It really lives up to its name - every thing is quick, easy, and delicious! The curries are wonderful and simple to make, and there's even detailed instructions on how to make rice (again, great for the cooking-impaired like myself!) The ingredients are generally inexpensive and easy to find (even at my dumpy little grocery store.) I would definately recommend this cookbook to anyone who is unfamiliar with asian cooking or new to cooking in general. Wonderful book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty, easy Thai food at home
I purchased this book in order to make the shrimp curry with pineapple which my wife loves.Although I'm sure it's not the most authentic Thai book out there, the recipes are simple and easy to make and taste enough like the real thing for me.So far we've made the above curry, Spicy Basil Stir-Fry, grilled flank steak with Crying Tiger sauce as well as a few of the noodle dishes. All were great and very quick. An added plus; most of the dishes are quite healthy or can be with a few quick changes.I use light coconut sauce to help lower the calorie content. The recipes are really quick too - once you've chopped the food the cooking times are very short. The book has many great pictures too. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas with a weak execution of some of the basics, but I liked it
I am not familiar with Lieberman's show on "The Food Network", so I took this book at face value when I was browsing cookbooks at my local Boarders. I'll give Lieberman this, he takes a very engaging and appealing photograph. I have to agree with the M. Borard's observation that the book is so weakly organized that it seems to throw away much of the leverage that his exposure on TFN might have given him. In spite of the title, this isn't really all that accessible to novice cooks (or those on stringent budgets), contains some problematic advice (garlic presses? Hellman's mayonaisse when it is so easy to make your own?) and doesn't really contain all that many recipes for the beginning cook. His section on grilling seems as if it could get a newbie cook in serious trouble with botched results.
4-0 out of 5 stars Charming chef, average food
Lets face it, Dave Lieberman is hot, the food is okay. This is a good common sense book, nothing special. Would reccommend it as a graduation gift/gift for someone who is just getting started in the kitchen. It has a few good ideas for more expereinced cooks, but its unlikely to be the cookbook that you will keep coming back to. Nice pictures and layout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Approachable recipes from an approachable guy
Dave Lieberman is a breath of fresh air to Food Network's list of 'celebrity' chefs. He has the unjaded enthusiasm of a newbie, the approachability that Tyler Florence tries to have but comes off as a bit insincere, and a genuine love of cooking that transcends both the electronic and written medium.

I can't comment on Reinhart's other recipes, but his Chicago deep dish is not even close to the authentic item.

5-0 out of 5 stars In search of the perfect pizza
The dedication on the fly leaf reads: 'To Sonia- May your pizzas be perfect!' and I certainly wish it had been written directly on the book and not on a bookplate......Alas, Peter Reinhart has not been able to make a book or demonstration tour to Hawaii...yet...!, but thanks to the efforts of another foodie friend and baker extraordinaire at least I got the signed book plate!I love cookbooks with 'meat' in them.....stories, anecdotes, history and background rather than one with just recipes.I love it when the author takes you along for the ride.........!I have enjoyed every bit of this search along with him......and the pizzas and focaccias I tried have all worked out....Thank you Peter for a wonderful trip to the world of great pizzas and the revelation of the focaccia col formaggio di Recco!!!!!

This is not a joke book or a parody. This is a warmly written, humorous, and quite serious cookbook filled with delightful traditional and unusual recipes. It includes wonderful photographs by the author of people and places and food all connected to his fondness and memory of growing up in rural and small town Mississippi. You may not be tempted to try every single recipe in this book, but you won't be able to resist trying many of them! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Regional Cookbook
I must confess that I resisted buying this cookbook for many years. I am an avid collector of American Regional and International cookbooks, but found the title of this book offensive. I assumed it was written to mock rural whites, a people I know to be hardworking, self-reliant, and decent. I was wrong about this one. This book actually celebrates these people and their cuisine, and is one of the very best traditional American cookbooks in print. Great recipes for fried chicken, catfish, hushpuppies, collard greens, Hoppin John, cornbread, and biscuits, as well as rabbit, squirrel, and yes, even possum. The book has a folksy humor throughout, and the recipes are authentic. Books like this become even more precious as this and other American regional cuisines disappear under a blanket of bland corporate burger chains, sub shops, and pizza joints. Incidentally, several recent medical studies have shown that rural Appalachians who consume this traditional fare are far healthier than those who embrace the modern suburban diet of chain restaurant food! If you have any interest in traditional American cooking, this book is a must-own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Redneck cooking at it's best
Don't let the title fool you, the recipes are good and the pictures are great. If you've ever lived in the deep south for any length of time , this cook book is a treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Cookbook!
This cookbook is absolutely fantastic. As are all of Ina Garten's books.I have cooked at least half of the recipes and they never fail to get rave reviews. The recipes use common ingredients which are easy to find and no fancy techniques are required. It is also nicely illustrated.Watch out though if you are "fat" conscious!Low-fat is not her style!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as her other books, but a good addition
I wouldn't start with this book -- I actually 'inherited' it from someone who didn't care for it. I like the recipes, but the book is laid out as a series of party menus, rather than desserts in one section, main dish in one section, etc. While I appreciate the menu suggestions (they are a big help, as I am sometimes stymied as to what to serve with what), I would rather see them listed in the back of the book, rather than have the book organized this way. Otherwise, the book is stellar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something out of the ordinary
I must disagree with some of the reviews that have placed this book at par or below. Ina hits it out of the park yet again with Barefoot Parties! It is true that you will not find your run of the mill "holiday" parties in here, but who needs more books on those types of parties? We need ideas and recipes for all of the months in between! Parties! delivers just that. First of all, the recipes work; every time. Secondly, Ina chooses menues that one might not associate with that particular get together. It's a refreshing book that you will use over and over again not only for parties but for every night of the week. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars different
The book is funny at points. I expected more recipes. I listened to the audio version, read by the author herself. She employs liberal use of the callback, so much so that she latches on to a few key phrases and repeats them to the point of browbeating. The recipes are sickening. I could barely stand to listen. If those women actually eat that way, it's no wonder they are all saving for lipsuction. If I heard her say "one runningoverteaspoon of vanilla" one more time, I was gonna find her and punch her in the face. Just say a teaspoon and a half of vanilla! The part about her mother having a stroke makes her seem incredibly selfish and coldhearted. Maybe being dispassionate is just her way of coping.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delish!
The good thing about this book is that it has alllll of the old standard recipes (Death Chicken, Chocolate Stuff) and a bunch of fabulous new ones... some that wouldn't clog your arteries with the first bite!As always, the side-stories and "financial advice" are hilarious and you'll find yourself wanting a ceee-ment monkey.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Grilling Cookbook
This is a handy guide for anyone looking to find new recipes for your gas grill. I love cooking on the grill, and this book provided some interesting varaitions on some old favorites. Not every recipe was 5 star, but none were terrible. I am certain there is something for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, quick and great tasting food
I became interested in this book after watching the TV show BBQ Bootcamp on the Food Network (try to watch that show if you can, it will help you understand the logic behind the recipes). Now that I have the book and have tried some of the unusual easy recipes I am more pleased than ever. The Beer Can Chicken alone may be the best chicken I've ever had. It's extra juicy and a little spicier than I would have expected but VERY GOOD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yummy and Healthy
No more thumbing through other cookbooks, searching for the dishes that sound healthy. When we cook recipes out of this book we know we are eating good.Like with most cookbooks, I've picked a few favorites and pretty much ignore most of the book. Some of the recipes just don't sound very intersting. But I like how each recipe lists preparation and cooking time. This is the perfect cookbook for busy, working families who want to be assured they are serving up healthy meals. The recipes are easy to follow, there are no unusual or hard-to-find ingredients, it is nice how the spiral bound book lays flat, and there seems to be a lot of pictures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shockingly unhealthy!
The chili recipe in this cookbook has just five ingredients in it, three are canned, one processed (pasta) and the other meat. Total sodium based on the labels on the cans I used were: tomato soup 30% of the recommended daily adult intake, beans 16%, broth 58% - total sodium from these three ingredients per serving: 104%. Canned, processed, overly salty, nothing healthy about that! They should have called this book, More of the Same Old Betty Crocker (owned by General Mills).

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly fast, easy, healthy
Some of these recipes are so easy, you'd think they'd be bad, but they're not! They are great!HIGHLY recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat at Mustard's Grill! (Or buy the cookbook!)
When you visit the Napa wine region you must eat at Mustard's Grill. If that is not possible then you should buy Cindy Pawlcyn and Brigid Callinan's cookbook. The recipes for fantastic grilled food, unique side dishes, and incredible desserts found in this book will make you plan your next vacation to northern California. If you like pork you will love her Mongolian pork chops with chinese mustard sauce. Serve it with her mashed potatoes and braised red cabbage for a winning meal reminiscent of the friendly restaurant nestled among Napa's vineyards. Buy this cookbook and you will immediately understand why it won a James Beard award. And I hear that another cookbook is in the works ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Should have been 5 stars...
I would recommend this cookbook to those with some experience - this is not a recipe guide, but rather an inspiration source from a chef with well-grounded tastes. The recipes are easy to follow, are not difficult or overly time consuming in preparation, and show culinary flair and wisdom without being trendy for trend's sake. I would describe the dishes as simple food for gourmets. The book's design and photographs are tasteful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece
The book is a masterpiece for a handful of reasons. You will see the book as a labor of love ... 100% attention to ingredients, cooking methods, details of all kinds - no matter how small.I love restaurants that are consistent with their menu and dishes even if they stay around for 20 years, like Mustards Grill.I first dined at Mustards 12 years ago and fell in love with their burgers and soul-satisfying soups. That was also the place where I first tried the calamari with its sumblime taste that continues to haunt me to this day.And now 12 years later, I visited the Napa Valley for the first time and decided to try Mustards again. It is still as magnificent as the night I first walked in.Many of my old favorites are still on the menu ... and now with the new cookbook, I'm able to recreate the wonderful signature dishes at home 3,000 miles away from the actual restaurant.Don't be turned off by the long, long, long lists of ingredients ... the book is not meant for everyday cooking ... it's a restaurant cookbook so I'm saving the book for special occasions - whenever I need the cooking inspiration. Again, the book is a masterpiece - the photos are gorgeous, the recipes are irresistible especially the fact that the book includes just about every signature dish that makes Mustards undeniably famous. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very authentic!
I have been married to a latin man for 37 years & learned how to cook Cuban (& Puerto Rican) food.I bought the book for a friend after I showed her how to make 'ropa vieja' (translated 'old clothes'). A must have for your collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
I really enjoy Tom Fitzmorris's radio show and was excited at buying this cookbook. The book has everything you could possibly want for New Orleans food. However, the recipes make a lot of food.I only cook for two and have tried cutting all the ingredients in half so I wouldn't have as much, but it doesn't work out.So now I only use this book when I am cooking for a party.I have had numerous compliments on the recipes from this book and I recommend this if you are an experienced "chef."I only say that because a lot of the recipes require numerous steps and can be frustrating to a beginner. The steps to just make a roux seems simple but I have ceased trying to make it because it never comes out right like to says in the book.I actually prefer the Williams Sonoma cookbook on New Orleans over this one.It has the same recipes as this book but with color pictures of each recipe and the recipes are simpler and delicious.

3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good book
Tom Fitzmorris understands New Orleans cuisine. His recepies are pretty good.It is a nice cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every cook
As I read through the recipes I thought, I just need to start with the first recipe and make them all.I've tried ten of the recipes and have loved them all.The forward by Emerile and Tom's comments just topped it off for this New Orleanean. ... Read more

This book is phenominal! I made the "Zesty Pork Chops" the other night...quick, easy and made it for friends who all said "wow! I want this recipe!"
5-0 out of 5 stars He just keeps getting better!
I've long admired Pepin and have several of his earlier books. This newest book (and PBS series) brings us his approach to "fast food" which I think is meant with a wink and a smile. It's only fast in the time sense!I'm a serious foodie and this is real cooking; equally useful for family meals or entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simpler does not mean less tasty
This is the best cookbook, in my opinion, for those of us who have busy lifestyles but still prefer delicious home cooked meals. I have given numerous copies of this as gifts and the recipients have all been appreciative. I have tried 75% of the recipes, which is amazing in itself, and only one dish was disappointing. I own many of Jacque's cookbooks and this is the one I turn to time and time again. Happy cooking! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Grill Sergeant Strikes Again
This is another great grilling how-to book from the "Grill Sergeant" and it covers all of the bases. From basic ribs to more exotic recipes, Raichlin thoroughly covers preparation, smoking, grilling and basting (mopping) many varieties of ribs.Of course, he also includes recipes for rubs, marinades, mopping and finishing sauces.Easy to read and follow step-by-step directions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Vegan cookbook.
The best thing about the recipes in this book is that they are the real thing. They are not 'adapted' to be vegetarian or vegan. They were always vegan to start with. These are the recipes I feed my meat eating friends, because they're not weird. They are the sort of thing you'd normally eat if you were just having a non-meat meal one day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic!
I'm not even a vegetarian , let alone a vegan, and this book offers such flavorful and simple recipes. Some more time consuming than others but definitely worth the wait!Unless you hate veggies, this book is a must have!I just made the Herb Scalloped potatoes as a side dish and the author was right, it's hard to believe there's no cheese or cream! the pizza with caramelized onions, kalmata olives and tomatoes is fantastic too!. . . . .lots of yummyness!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to the kitchen library
Though we aren't vegans, we do enjoy vegetarian/vegan cuisine and have almost worn our copy of this cookbook out. The recipes taste great, are clearly explained, and don't require a lot of specialty (hard-to-find) ingredients. The conversion index in the back, for metric/US measurements and temperatures is also very helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Culinary Traveller in Tuscany - Food for Thought
5-0 out of 5 stars Delectable!
This book is what so many books claim to be but aren't -- an off-the-beaten-track gem.For any visitor to Tuscany with the time or inclination to go beyond the usual Florence-Lucca-Pisa-San Gimignano-Siena type of itinerary (to name just one), the book offers a wonderfully imaginative alternative: plan your days -- or the entire trip -- around the best restaurants to be found in the little towns that most tourists never visit. The author gives tantalizing descriptions of both the towns and restaurants (with maps and itineraries), and supplies plenty of recipes to boot.So the book will function in the kitchen just as well as on the road -- it is essentially half cookbook and half guidebook. But for me (not being much of a cook, and planning a trip to Italy) it was the places the author describes that were the most delectable of all.The book is a great idea, beautifully executed and beautifully written.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is like great advice from a friend
Beth Elon's descriptions and recommendations are spot-on.I got this book just in time for a trip to Tuscany and found it extraordinarily useful. We loved visiting the places she mentioned and found her recipes and description of local specialties a great help in making fantastic menu selections.Back home, the recipes are like having Tuscany in our kitchen. It's now my favorite book to give to food- and travel-loving friends. ...
