5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect companion for your Gas Grill
Let me first say that I love barbecuing, and I guess you do, or you wouldn't even be checking this or any other barbecue book. I try to grill my family dinners almost every weekend, so I would have to say that I have put on thousands of barbecues this far. I own several barbecue and grilling books, and this is one of the best. I consider this book great because with the recipes on it I can try every now and then to make something a little bit different (I guess just to avoid a mutiny among my family crew, Ja Ja).
5-0 out of 5 stars Grass BBQ'ing taken to the next level!
I was always good at BBQ'ing with the Gas Grill, but i ran out of ideas on what to do next. This book is amazing, it opened up a whole new BBQ world to me, and encouraged me to experiment more. There isnt one recipie i tried that i didnt like. My personal favorite is the Briskett!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Grilling made easy
In addition to great recipes, this book also provides great grilling techniques for the novice and intermediate griller. Following the cooking instructions will always produce well seared, super moist chicken, fish and meats.

Informed and informative, Let's Eat Out! offers readers an exclusive perspective on innovative strategies for pursuit of an allergen filled healthy yet satisfactory diet without the necessity to stay home and avoiding the social atmosphere of the restaurant. Let's Eat Out! is very strongly recommended to everybody with restrictive allergies wishing to engage in restaurant dining with family, friends, or business associates.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tips & Ideas On Safely Eating Out With Gluten/Food Allergies!
This book has been very helpful as a mom of a 2 yr old food allergy child. When my daughter was diagnosed with a couple of severe food allergies and many sensitivies, we had not dined out for a while. This book has helped to truly understand what to look out for and how to manage the eating out process. It's easy to use and I was impressed by the tips and knowledge relating to dealing with the specific top 10 allergens when dining out.Not only does it deal with the 10 allergens but relates them to each of the 7 cuisines such as Indian, American Steak and Seafood, French, etc. giving helpful tips on how allergens may be "hidden" or used in preparation that you would never expect. The book helps you to identify these items and communicate effectively with the restaurant staff. In addition, there is also useful information on safely choosing snacks when you are out, travel, etc.The book has helped me gain confidence in dining out as a family again. The book is a great read for those with celiac, food allergies or even parents of children with food allergies!
5-0 out of 5 stars the first of its kind
"Let's Eat Out!" will make you hungry and give you the power to protect yourself from food allergies at the same time. This series is an amazingly comprehensive guide that is sure to help thousands of people to feel more in control of their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this cookbook!
I bought this cookbook about a month ago and I absolutely love it!I have made several recipes and every single one was delicious.Just as the title states, each recipe is so easy to make and usually pretty quick to prepare as well.I highly recommend this cookbook if you are fairly new to Asian cooking, as I was.Martin Yan provides a glossary of Asian terms and ingredients and discusses various methods of cooking.I make recipes from this book at least twice a week and my husband and daughter have already requested that I make many of them again! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The blend of recipes with local history and color creates an intriguing, fun title that needs no color photos for embellishment.
Edna Lewis grew up in a small Virginia farming community that had been settled by free slaves: here she shares some of the home cooking dishes of her roots, with seasonal celebrations of local fresh ingredients providing opportunities for dishes such as a Sweet Potato Casserole for a Sunday revival dinner, making Plum Wine from an abundance of summer plums, and using fresh-caught quail in Quail in Casserole. The blend of recipes with local history and color creates an intriguing, fun title that needs no color photos for embellishment.
5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific memoir of rural home cooking. Buy It!!!
`The Taste of Country Cooking' by Edna Lewis, in its 30th anniversary edition, prefaced by editor extraordinare, Judith Jones, and introduced by Alice Waters, is one of our more important national culinary documents. The one thing one wants to be aware of is that contrary to its superficial similarities to important culinary reference works by Judith Jones collaborators, Julia Child and Diane Kennedy, this book is not a reference for `southern' cooking technique. Rather, it is much more a personal testament on how Ms. Lewis' family cooked in Freetown in the Virginia Piedmont, founded by her freed slave grandparents. It is much more similar to other personal works such as Elizabeth Coblentz' `The Amish Cook' or Sallie Ann Robinson's `Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way'. It is not the kind of anthropological work we see in the great `Honey from a Weed' by Patience Gray or `Lulu's Provincial Kitchen' by Richard Olney, since this is written from within this milieu.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes your grilling game to a new level
I thought I knew how to grill well and always got good compliments, but I have learned from this book and it has kicked my grilling up a notch. For example, I've learned to grill my steaks at hotter temperatures for shorter times to produce an outside with a little crust and the middle the way I like it.This is a great book for either gas or charcoal grillers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Weber's Real Grilling
I purchased this book for my brother's birthday as a companion book to Weber's Art of the Grill.Unbeknownst to me, he was a bit gunshy behind the grill and not at all confident BBQing.I was there for my nephew's birthday and happened to chat with his in-laws who were bragging about how wonderful his newly aquired BBQ was now perfectly paired with his newly aquired skills and recipes thanks to Weber's Real Grilling. He had used a new recipes every day for the 4 days prior to the birthday party and his in-laws were completely thrilled by his newly discovered skills and recipes...he had received an enthusiastic thumbs up at every meal!

5-0 out of 5 stars great cooking
This cookbook is great. It is easy to follow and produces excellent results.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Introduction to Japanese Home Cooking Hidden Among Smarmy Prose
Let's start with the bad (beyond the gimmicky idiotic title). The author's tone is beyond smarmy. She congratulates herself and her countrywomen on almost every page - my favorite being her tale of being 40-something and going to the liquor store to buy alcohol and being asked for her identification to prove she was of age.Oh please.(And as another reviewer noted, the author does like to name drop a lot - where she and her husband have traveled; the upscale hotels they've stayed in, etc.)Ironically, the smarminess is quite un-Japanese or at least, quite untraditional. One of the first things I learned when I studied Japanese was that modesty in language is paramount and that one must always deflect a compliment.Perhaps we can attribute the smarmy tone of the book to Ms. Moriyama's American husband/co-writer.Either that or she has been in the U.S. too long. 3-0 out of 5 stars Be careful
If cover photo was steaming rice as Tanizaki's quote in the book instead of the slim, but wrinkle faced author posing with white teethed grin not readily available in Japan, I might have liked the book better. It's pretty imformative history and how tofu is made and stuff. Her mom might be the last generation of Tokyo kitchen goddesses -- Showa hitoketa age group (b.1925-1935sh) know wartime hardship and re- costructed Japan to what it is today, all the while doting on their kids with luxury they themselves lacked. Result is the totally pampered, princessed, well mannered but self centered, well educated but no clue what's in the big world really, polished by spending tons of money (some of their own but more likely daddy's and honey's) middle aged woman you see on the cover. Other reviewers are correct. Just look at what's on the table in today's Tokyo kitchens run by younger housewives. Their mothers already grew up preferring fast food and ramen noodle packet, no longer bony fish with head and gills intact. I am afraid this book is not practical for diet nor recipe ( sorry, we don't do ounces we do grams) misleading to Americans with better intention. It should be titled and promoted as nostalgic culture guide written in bad English.
3-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing but difficult to put into practice
I am a big fan of Eastern food and culture so I found this book very appealing. I, however, found it very difficult to put into practice. The types of ingredients you would need to purchase to truly follow the ideas in the book are difficult to find in many areas. I don't put anything down, though, on the book itself. The writer is interesting and has a lot of good information. She presents herself and her history well without coming across as self-righteous "better than you" attitude as can come across in some of these lifestyle/diet books.

3-0 out of 5 stars cute but disappointing
I think the black and white episodes of the Andy Griffith Show are probably the best examples of American TV ever made, so I was thrilled to order this book. There are no photos at all which makes it tedious to flip through. Also, every recipe insists on having a character's name in the title. It's cute for the first few pages but gets tiresome very quickly. I can't imagine Ernest T. Bass cooking anything and if he did I don't believe I would want to try it. However, there are many, many pieces of dialogue reproduced exactly as they were said on the show and it is delightful to read them! How funny simple American dialect can be... This book is a fun momento of the classic Americana sitcom, but don't expect to cook much from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waited for Years for This...
I've seen this cookbook sold in book collector's magazines, but always lost track of how to get it. I am so glad to add it to my collection of cookbooks. I plan to try most of the recipes, but will leave the possum recipes to the Darlings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great comfort favorites!
I received this cookbook as a shower gift ten years ago from my 90-something year old great, great aunt.At the time, I thought it looked a bit hokey...it just goes to show that we young cooks have so much to learn from those that have gone before us!It has all of my family's favorites -- it is usually the place that I can find the recipe for all of those good things I remember from my childhood.I have over 60 cookbooks, and it is one of my most-used!This one is a "must-have". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not just another cookbook.
My original BH&G cook book had the same red plaid cover but the binding fell apart so this seemed like just a replacement. What a great replacement! So far there has not been one recipe that I couldn't find for all of the old stand-by's and a new version with easy to read and understand recipes. They have all worked and given me something new for dinner almost every night. Read and follow for some fine dining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the Standard
For generations the Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook has been the foundation for the daily menu.Whether you are looking for time tested favorites to something new with a little flair this cookbook is a must have!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
I received this cookbook as a gift at somepoint, and it's primary use is to bookend the other cookbooks that actually get used. While it appears to be a good basic cookbook, Betty Crocker and Good Housekeeping each have their own basics which are far superior in my experience. Many of the recipes I tried in this book, such as banana bread, had errors in measurement for ingredients. Other just tasted awful, such as the devil's food cake, which with the suggested frosting is now the primary reason I can't stomach chocolate. I have been cooking since I was about 8, so for about 14 years, and have enough experience to catch some mistakes or modify seasonings, time, temperature. However, a less experienced cook may find this book frustrating. Additionally, I have never been fond of this series of cookbooks which requires you to assemble it yourself (three ring binder) and is more prone to pages wearing out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The recepies in this book have obviously been tested.I believe this because the many I've tried have been really good.
4-0 out of 5 stars Textbook from Reliable Authority on Cooking. Some lapses
`Cooking at Home with The Culinary Institute of America' aims to arm the amateur cook with many of the tools of the professional and communicate the things which inspire a professional chef and set them apart from the amateur. The book comes to us with the authority of the foremost culinary school in the country and the aura of being a textbook with which it may seem to be sacrilege to take issue. This book does many very good things, but in popularizing it's subject, it does loose some depth and credibility.3-0 out of 5 stars A good basic cookbook-compared to other similar books

5-0 out of 5 stars La Varenne Pratique by Anne Willan [Hardcover]
Seller was fast and i recieved my book ahead of schedule. Would buy from seller again!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I keep recommending this book
La Varenne Pratique by Anne Willan bristles with more than 2500 full-color photographs. Willan is the founder of the famed Ecole de Cuisine La Varenne in Paris. Her standard are high, yet the text is as crystal-clear as her consomm. I opened the book at random just now to be dazzled by a two-page, twelve-photograph spread on just how to remove lobster meat from the shell. The instructions for complex operations like boning a leg of lamb, shaping a braided loaf of bread, baking fish in parchment paper, share quarters with basics like properly shelling peas, lining a pie mold, or testing the doneness of pan-fried meats.Read more

A beautiful book from the shores of Lake Como.Even if you are not a cook, you'll love this book. The stories and photos of this gorgeous Lake in Italy can't be beat.If you are a cook, this is the best.....a must have book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Of rice and men . . .
... and women too of course. This charming blend of recipes and witty tales about personalities from the timeless Villa D'Este Hotel lifts risotto to a new high of appreciation.Who would have thought a book about such tiny grains would be an entertaining read? And it beckons you to the kitchen.I admit to enjoying risottos prepared by expert chefs over the years, but never attempting the dish myself. Now I feel confident and keen to give it a go.There are risottos for every season.Of course now that I know so much more, the Arborio rice will no longer do - I must look for the special regional Italian Carnaroli rice if I really wish to impress. The white truffle might prove a bit problematic, but there are plenty of other options.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good guide to Moroccan food!
When we got this book, my husband looked through every page from cover to cover with excitement. He took a pencil and circled all of the recipes that he loved, or sounded good to him.He circled a large portion of the book!!I have grown to love Moroccan food since I got married, and more so since our trip to Morocco! The only down side is that there isn't that large of variety of recipes.I am searching for more variety, since my husband only wants a certain few moroccan meals.I will never get rid of this book!I love it, and it makes a great foundation for your Moroccan cooking library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tears of Joy
Greetings Amazon Readers: Back before there was an "amazon.com." I fell in love with Moroccan food (and decor) after visiting a local Moroccan restaurant in the Los Angeles area. I quickly gave my living room a Moroccan makeover and patiently waited for the book to arrive by mail from the publisher in New York. When I opened it tears of joy dropped onto the title page (true).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!
I got this cookbook shortly after it came out, as I was just becomming really interested in cooking. It has quickly become the bible of my kitchen. The recipes are easy to follow (and not to mention delicious!) with excellent pictures. It also offers detailed descriptions of various kinds of meats, grains, pastas, fruits, vegetables, etc.It has a very extensive variety of dishes to choose from...They say you can't please everyone, all the time, but this book will sure come close!I would highly recommend this book to any cook from beginner to advanced gourmet.

5-0 out of 5 stars if you're going to own one cookbook - this is it
my mother-in-law bought me this cookbook and i've been using it every week since then. out of all the cooking books i own, this is the one i come back to time and time again. this book is a great resource for anything you would ever want to cook. the recipes are fantastic, most importantly - delicious - and are all very easy. there's a photo for almost each recipe, so if you're like me and you like to see a photo to picture the dish, this is the book for you. i highly recommend this book as the first and only cookbook you may ever need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zuni rocks my kitchen
I have not eaten at the restaurant, and I have no special culinary skills outside of being a good home cook. In fact, I can rarely follow a recipe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Desert Island Cookbook
As my cookbook collection continues to grow, this book remains one of my favorites. It is a well written classy book that I personally admire. It is definately a book for foodies and not a quick reference for some quick dinner ideas.
5-0 out of 5 stars A true classic
I have to join those who love this book--there's no other way to express my opinion.Reading it is like having Judy Rodgers sitting in your kitchen chatting with you while you're cooking.Yes, some of the ingredients called for have very limited availability, but even in those recipes you can take away some basic technique or combination of ingredients that can be used in other contexts. Many of the recipes really are quite simple (the Lentils Braised in Red Wine, for example) and give you prep options depending on what's in your kitchen.I certainly wouldn't have this as my basic cookbook, but it's so much fun to read and cook from that I'd have it as one of my top 10.In comparison with other restaurant cookbooks by well-known chefs, this one has many more recipes that are practical for a week-day meal. For those who complain about the photos, I say that if you don't conjure up an appetizing mental picture of the food when you read the descriptions, there's no poetry in your soul.

Lots of easy, great recipes. If for no other reason, you should buy this book just for the basic english muffin recipe and scone recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Resource for Tradition as well as Recipes!
A friend and I have recently begun taking tea and we love the true British and Victorian style of tea houses.I wanted to find a book for her that was a great resource on the history of afternoon and high tea as well as providing some recipes to go along with the information. This was the best book I found. No other goes into as much detail about the history of tea that this book does. The only downfall is that the only illustrations in the book are line drawings. There are no photos.Still, that didn't keep me from picking this book over several others that did have nice pictures, because in the end, the content of this book superceded any other.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best of 4
I've recently bought 4 different tea books and this is the best one I have so far. There are a lot of the expected recipes for traditional tea time fare, with some minor omissions I felt. The print left something to be desired, some of it was blurred, but if you just want to buy 1 English tea book, this is it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointed
I wish there were more photos. The traditional white birthday cake came out okay... half the time. I would recommend using your own baking knowledge to supplement the recipes. Not really for beginner beginners.

2-0 out of 5 stars as another reviewer has noted, I found the receipes did not
I have tried to make three of the magnolia receipes and so far

5-0 out of 5 stars Classical Indian cuisine
I have been cooking with this book since it was published more than a dozen years ago.If there is 'classical Indian cuisine' - this book captures it.The recipes are authentic in the results they produce and are easy to follow. This book is a must for anyone who professes to know how to cook Indian food whether they are a novice or an expert. It should be noted that these are restaurant recipes coming from food professionals. You will not be asked to open a jar of this or that. But neither are you ever required to find exotic ingredients - and that is the beauty of this book.No other book compares.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best
I bought this book when a friend of mine (no mean cook himself) advised me to try it. Every recipe that I have tried works beautifully. This is one book anyone looking to make Indian food MUST have. Our gastronomical experience took a whole new direction with this work of art.5-0 out of 5 stars Prashad-Cooking with Indian Masters
This is a book on Indian cooking, on which you can completely rely upon. The beauty of this book is that recipes come out accurately if you simply follow the instructions. I have tried many recipes from this book and now I have a lot of confidence on Indian cooking! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST COOKBOOK FOR BAKING EVER!
I tell you what, this cookbook RULES. I got married with ZERO skills in the kitchen, and I married a man who loves good baked goods. I was like "Sheesh! HOw do I learn how to make yummy stuff, when I haven't clue one how to begin, & we're broke....it's not like I can experiment with expensive ingredients & make a bunch of mistakes & turn out gross cakes."
3-0 out of 5 stars OK book
I love to bake but found this book to be missing some very important features. The number of servings per recipe is not included along with other important measurements. The cooking times are also way off for some of the recipes. It's a good book for creative ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for kids and adults
The recipes are yummy and EASY!!!My kids can follow the instructions. This would make a great
