5-0 out of 5 stars It is what it is
Pretty coffee table book...don't buy for the recipes unless you are a professional.I am a chef and have been at several for and five star establishments.I had the pleasure a few years ago to do a banquet with Susur and he is the real deal. Will his techniques translate to the amateur cook looking to learn from his book? No.These are professional recipes designed to be executed by a top class brigade with years of technique and time to prepare the needed mis en place. But as a professional, the way he approaches food as well as the culinary foundation that he has built for himself is unique and will be appreciated by those in the know. What isn't pretentious about a $50 coffee table book? This book gives exposure to a unique and talented chef who is grounded in solid technique and is able to translate that into well presented and balanced dishes that are not silly fusion.Definetly worth a look.

5-0 out of 5 stars Susur Lee
This book its all about creativity by a man who has been over looked for too many years as one of the worlds Top Chefs. This book is in one simple word "Awesome"

5-0 out of 5 stars Susur: Some Thoughts on Perfection in Cuisine
Given the acidity of previous reviews, let me start with some background on myself: I am an American not resident in Canada; I am a non-professional chef -- I cook for myself, my family and my friends. I love food, both from the philosophy that one can learn the history of a country or region by learning about its cuisine and from the perspective that I truly believe we are what we eat ... and the miserable record of American health and longevity is directly due to the poor quality of what we consume.

Not only does Kathy Casey's Northwest Table have delightfully delicious recipes it is a great read. The photos are amazing and remind me how grateful I am to live here in the Northwest. 5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Smith...a true chef at home...
From the very first day I saw "Chef at Home" I was immmediately addicted...this is a book highly recommended for the "can't cook, won't cook" folks like myself, as well as the seasoned pros. Don't leave this book on a coffee table!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars inspiring for a not usual chef at home
I really thought that cooking shows were mainly blase' affairs; that is, until I saw the Chef at Home show featuring Michael Smith. This in turn caused me to purchase his cookbook or cooking reference by the same name! Now, I can easily read his comments and follow up on dishes I think I would like which were featured in the show by looking at this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Making me a better chef at home
This is first class teaching at it's best.Michael Smith is a relaxed host and guide to building your own culinary skills using a few simple, tried and true ideas to provide nutritious and delicious meals for your family or to offer suggestions for creating excellent, easy and very flavorful dishes for your favorite dinner guests.

3-0 out of 5 stars Did You Notice
Lumiere is a beautiful book with some interesting recipes ... BUT like many cookbooks published by aspiring celebrity chefs many small, yet critical details have been overlooked or omitted such as number of baking pans needed, sizes of pans, etc..
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
If you're looking for recipes created by a chef instead of those cookie-cutter recipe books, this is the book for you. No matter where you are you'll find that the seasonal produce follows you (for example, berry fruits come before stone fruits, which come before the apple family (apples, pears etc.). It's not rocket science, berry fruits come before stone fruits no matter where you are in the world. If you are fond of seasonal eating, and you should be, buy this book. If you enjoy reproducing the dishes of the great restaurants, buy this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars A decent book of good 'haute cuisine' restaurant dishes
`Lumiere', written by Rob Feenie on the recipes of his British Columbian restaurant of the same name is a competent write-up of the restaurant's great recipes, mostly invented by chef Feenie. This means that in spite of the great recipes, it is a mediocre cookbook for the rest of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neat as a historical reference, dated as a cook book
This is a great book for anyone interested in baking as our ancestors did it, or experienced bakers looking for a general reference book. However, due to its age, a great number of the recipes aren't very specific, or require that the baker know how much 'enough milk to make moist' is, or how hot a 'quick' oven is.Some quantities are a bit odd, too.How big is a tumbler? The recipes from this book that I have tried have all come out well, but that is going to be dependent on the ability to understand them.If nothing else, the book's worth reading to see what people ate, and to see the occasional ads, like the one boasting of all the phosphates and nitrates a certain cereal had!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mennonite cooking that really schmecks!
I'm not a big cook, but this is one cookbook that I have added to my library.Edna Staebler, now 97 years of age, was a native of the Waterloo region of Ontario, which is really the heart of Canada's German community, and is where many Mennonites and Amish settled.Although she worked as a journalist for some time, she eventually put together this cookbook based on recipies that she had gathered primarily from fiends and family. Many of the recipies are Mennonite or influenced by Mennonite and German cooking. This book also consists of a number of anecdotes, so not only is it a great cookbook, but an entertaining read as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars If I could only have a couple of cookbooks...
If I could only have 2 or 3 cookbooks, this would be one of them. I have been using this and "More Food that Really Schmecks" for years. The recipes are easy, interesting and taste great! There's a no-nonsense, comforting quality to them. The short stories add interest. I have over 400 cookbooks and keep going back to this favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic cookbook
A Canadian of 23 years old, she packed her bags and headed off to be a nursing missionary in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, and her mother sent with her this cookbook. Well, the pages of the Purity Cookbook are torn and stained with dirt from PNG. Then across to Australia she came to settle down with a new husband. How often this cook book was used you would not believe, the pages have notes written on them (some are now almost impossible to read), some pages are torn, others are missing and almost all pages have been impregnated with ingredients! 5-0 out of 5 stars This was the baking and cooking bible in our home
My father, who was and still is the cook in my childhood home, used this cookbook so much it is now beyond ragged.I bought a used original edition copy on EBay awhile ago for myself, but I was very excited to see that it was reissued and I bought two more copies for my brother and cousin. The recipes in this book are excellent. My husband swears by the pancake batter recipe. My father has made every pie, cookie, roll etc recipe. You will not regret ordering this cookbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended
I really enjoyed this book - it breaks the recipes down according to Quebec regions and is rich in history and the stories behind the recipes. It has everything from Eggs in Maple Syrup (!), various versions of Meat Pie (Tourtiere), various Sugar Pie recipes, and finally, to the famous Jo Louis cream filled cake that started the Jo Louis empire.Every French Canadian person I've ever showed the recipe book to has immediately wanted a copy of it.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
I bought this book last March to recreate some favorite dishes for my French Canadian boyfriend here in Los Angeles. We have made several dishes together, and all were proclaimed a great success (by him, the expert taster!). It is an enjoyable book as well, dividing the culinary landscape into regions with intros etc. that made me more educated about Quebec regional cooking. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous little book!
I own many baking books and am always serching for new recipes.I purchased this book after reading the so positive reviews everyone made about it.I am very happy with it, I guess there's no other book on pound cakes that can be so simple and concise as this one and having so good recipes! The writing is very clear, baking tips the right ones and the results excelent! Also the book format is very handy. The only minus is that there are no photos at all but I guess that's also why the price is so appealing!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pound Cake Cookbook
I found this little pound cake cookbook by accident here on Amazon.com, and I am so happy I did. The author, Bibb Jordan explains what the meaning of pound cake is, it's origins, and how to make the "perfect" pound cake. I have a website for Home Baker's and I choose to include on my site a wonderful recipe from this book: Chocolate Truffle Pound Cake. This cake is amazing, like so many of the other ones in the book. I also make a recommendation on my site for home baker's to definitely purchase this book. I highly recommend it for the "Pound Cake Lover", and anyone who loves to bake wonderful pound cakes. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Pound Cake Resource I've Found!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Food Every Time!
Planning a mid-week meal?Planning a party? This book will do for both.I have tried almost every recipe in here and everything, I mean everything from birthday cakes to roast beef, turns out great.Of particular note, a spaghetti bolognese my family clamours for, as-good-as-the-noodle-stand Pad Thai, and cinnamon buns to start Saturday night for a laid-back Sunday morning. There are lots of recipes for those days when you have a couple of things in the fridge and are wondering what to do with them. This book has beautiful colour illustrations so you will know how to fold perogies, roll sushi or stuff a turkey.Better than the Silver Palate for everyday cooking.
