1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy resource
First off, I am on the Fat Flush Plan, and enjoy it very much. However, several things about the plan and this book in particular really offend me:
5-0 out of 5 stars Lose weight, lower cholestrol & cleanse your Body!
After my sister was told that her cholestrol was 319, I asked what she was doing about it.She told me that she and her husband (who lost 35 pounds: she lost 23 pounds) were doing the "Fat Flush Diet."I asked what that was and ended buying the book. After 18 months my sister's cholestrol was 198 and our family history points at heart disease.I read the book avidly, did the 2 week 'flush' and lost 12 pounds."The Fat Flush" food plan was how I usually ate anyway, however new ideas from "The Fat Flush Cookbook" (which I have since purchased) for making 'good for you' foods was welcomed.Try it as a lifestyle! It makes sense! You are what you eat!

3-0 out of 5 stars I expected more.
I really expected to have a little bit more original cuban recipes. I mean the ones that are on there are great but I just expected more. It's still a very good cook book.

5-0 out of 5 stars very authentic!
I have been married to a latin man for 37 years & learned how to cook Cuban (& Puerto Rican) food.I bought the book for a friend after I showed her how to make 'ropa vieja' (translated 'old clothes'). She loves it & has tried many of the recipes. The photos truly capture the latin feel & the script of the three guys is added fun.I also live in Miami & enjoy Cuban food in restaurants or my own. A must have for your collection.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cuban Food with humor
This is an excellent beginning introduction cook book for Maimi cuban food. The recipes are very easy to follow and the ingredients are clearly explained. The only challenge I had was making Cuban bread. But I finally followed the recipe exactly and got a perfect loaf of bread. Yes I really had to roll out the dough with a rolling pin to get the bread to come out right. The writers comments just kept me reading recipes, not bad for a cook book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes for Bad Cooks
All of Alton's recipes have turned out great and I'm no great cook! The discussions about food and how/why it cooks under certain conditions helps me to better understand what I'm doing in the kitchen when the cookbook says to 'simmer' or to 'braise.' Normally these words don't make sense to me in cookbooks and my recipes don't turn out well. Alton generally avoids using these in his recipes unless he's described them in the chapter. Highly recommended book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Alton's Cookbook
It wasn't what I expected because there are not many recipes. However, he explains the rationale behind the mechanics of cooking and tells you how to achieve desired results, which can be applied in any situation. We are pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Typical Alton Brown...and that ain't a bad thing!
Much like its companion, this book retains much of Alton Brow's typical Good Eats flair while successfully adapting it for print. Not much is lost in the tranfer from film to paper. The recipes are easy to follow, the explanations are, as always, informative, and the humor is...well, humorous. I've got the Director's Cut on preorder (I am, after all, a Good Eats fanatic), and I can't wait or more in the future! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hit at a Moroccan Dinner Party
My course was dessert at a recent dinner and I found the recipe for Moroccan chocolate cake in this book.It was an amazing hit at the dinner party and one of the best desserts we have ever had at our gourmet dinners.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Cookbook
So I immediately preserved a quart of lemmons which will be done in about 2 more weeks.A key ingredient in quite a few of the recipes.Other ingredients are not always readily available to me here in the PNW.Have tried only one tajine recipe so the jury is still out but so far I give it 3 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Recipes, Great Pictures
I love to cook and I am an avid cookbook collector. I was looking for a "modern" moroccan cookbook for a long time. Finally I found one. All the recipies are well-thought-out, simple and delicious. Chef/Author Hassan M'Souli combines the traditional Moroccan recipes with the the innovative and fresh perspective of Australian way of cooking. Great forentertaining and cooking for the family. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction to Persian Cuisine...
As a Persian who's trying to learn to cook persian food, this is the best Persian cookbook I have. It lists the most popular foods, the receipes are easy to follow and turn out great! Almost as good as my own mom cooks them... I would definitley recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, gifted it, traveled with it!
I have used many of the recipes, modified them, cooked them with friends and family. I have given my first copy away to my mom and then had to search bookstores to replace it.I even took it on the plane when I visited my family to make a special dinner for my dad's birthday with the whole family there.Grandma even loved it!I especially like to make the crusted saffron, yogurt rice for others. The presentation is great, but best made with a friend to share in the prep.As the author says, nushjan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dutch Oven cooking at it's best
For me as a German "Dutch Oven Lover" this cookbook is an easy and efficient way of learning how to cook with a Dutch Oven; the recipes are explained in detail and easy to change with other ingredients that are handy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Too Funny
I havn't had the opertunity to try the recipes yet but this cookbook is a great read. The recipes all look basic enough with a good mix of simple supermarket ingrediants as well as wild game recipes.I have about a 1/2 dozen dutch oven cookbooks and these are by far the best read so far.Unfortunatly despite the listing this is *not* spiral bound and wont stay open while cooking hands free. The second book, "more Cee dub's Dutch Oven and other camp cookin" is still spiral bound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best ever cookbook!
Never have I laughed so much as I did reading this cookbook. The stories are great and the recipes are even better.I used this book extensively while camping this year and it was the first time I ever used a DO(dutch oven). When my very picky middle daughter started looking for seconds and thirds at our meals, I knew I had learned a good thing. If anyone is just starting out or even is already using a dutch oven, this book is a must have! (Try the blackberry dump cake, I had'em licking out the dutchy!!)You will enjoy and use this book again and again! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite cookbook!!!!
This is the best cookbook!!! I bought it for my mom and then ended up borrowing it so much I had to buy my own! The recipes are incredible!! I have not found a bad one yet. Mac & Cheese is amazing!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it, I love it, I love it
The Black Family Reunion Cookbook came just in time for my own family reunion this past weekend - July 4, 2005. It's an excellent choice for newcomers or oldheads like myself. It takes you back to the good days when your mother was in the kitchen whipping up a delicious peach cobbler or some tasty macaroni and cheese. I just loved this! Every single recipe took me back to my youth. It was funny running across dishes that I had forgotten about. Whether you're African American or Hispanic, you will love this cookbook!! Highly recommended to the world of book lovers

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what I'm talking about!
I congratulate the Three Guys on their new book! I discovered their website years ago and have found it an invaluable resource for information on Cuban food and culture. I purchased their early online recipe book and still use it today. I also bought their first hardcover book and pre-ordered this second hardcover as soon as it was available.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enthusiastically recommended
The collaborative effort of Glenn Lindgren, Raul Musibay, Jorge Castillo, "Three Guys From Miami Celebrate Cuban: 100 Great Recipes For Cuban Entertaining" is an ethnic collection of mouth-watering cuisine and a "how to" guide for celebrating and partying "Cuban Style". There are whole chapters devoted to Cuban oriented desserts, drinks, appetizers, soups, entrees, side dishes, and even backyard grilling. Enhanced with a 'Cuban Food Glossary' and a list of sources for acquiring special ingredients for Cuban dishes, the recipes comprising "Three Guys From Miami Celebrate Cuban" range from 'Cake de Guayaba' (Guava Cake), to 'Ensalada de Fluevos' (Egg Salad), to 'Pollo de la Plancha' (Grilled Chicken Breasts), to 'Coctel de Frutas Tropical' (Tropical Fruit Cocktail). Wonderfully illustrated throughout with full color photography of finished dishes, "Three Guys From Miami Celebrate Cuban" is a particularly "user friendly" and enthusiastically recommended addition to any kitchen cook's ethnic cuisine oriented cookbook collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars El Segundo Hit!
Can there be anything wrong with a cookbook that starts with desserts up front.......?Definitely not in my opinion, especially when the first recipe is for Coconut Rice Pudding!

2-0 out of 5 stars Fine for beginning foodies but not for educational purposes
While comprehensive, this is too broad, too general and very stereotypical. Each 'cultural' group represented in the United States has the same diet as their fellows, it seems. It can also be very bland:since coming to the U.S., X group's consumption of 'junk' food, milk, and such, has increased.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Achievement
Cultural Foods: Traditions and Trends, by Pamela Goyan Kittler and Kathryn P. Sucher, Wadsworth/Thompson Learning, Belmont, California, is a remarkable achievement. The authors, both nutritionists with a gallopinginterest in culture, have examined the manyethnicgroups and cuisine traditions which comprise "what Americans eat." I was pleased to find that Native Americans, usually leftout of such surveys, were included, along withUgandans, Yemenese, Armenians, Basques and many, many others. Though initially written with food service professionals inmind, this is a book any foodie would devour. Itstarts with the food customs ofindividualcountries and then looks at how arriving immigrants have adapted their usual ways of preparing foods to American ingredientsand customs. Theauthors examine regional Americanfoodways and typical specialties andprovide anethnic foods glossary, a lengthy bibliography and a dense index which allows the reader to dip in and out of the book withease. Even the margins are peppered with food lore tidbits. ... Read more

My mother for the past 3 years or so, has been putting on these elaborate Sunday dinners after church. She pulls out all the stops and leaves no detail undone. The perfect dinnerware, themes, etc..And let me tell you, the food is out of this world. She's a southern woman and can she ever cook!
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Dinners for Beginners
By Bill Marsano. Well! Not so many years ago the "futurists" whose job it is to see what the next few years will bring boldly predicted that Americans would soon eat fully half of their meals outside the home. I laughed; I scoffed; I failed to see the light. Here it is 20 years or so later and the futurists were right. We breakfast at McDonald's and IHOP; we lunch there too; and we eat dinner at "family restaurants" like Sizzler, Outback, Ponderosa and the Olive Garden. Of course when I say 'we' I don't include me, and that's not because I'm a snob who thinks the Rusty Scupper, Mario's Pasta Garden and the like are beneath him (although I wouldn't eat at any of them on a bet). It's just that I just don't like restaurants in general, even the tony and expensive ones. I like to eat at home with friends and family, and I wish more people did. They'd eat better and save a bundle besides.5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful & Inspirational Book
This is a wonderful cookbook in addition to being an inspiration for all families and cooks. My favorite hobby is cooking for my family and friends, and Sunday dinners have long been a tradition going back to my own Grandmother's table when I was a child. It was over her table that I got to know her and my grandfather and share time and fellowship with my aunts, uncles, and cousins. Without those times together I wonder if we would be as close as we are today.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Authentic
I am a Belgian living in the US and I bought this book in 1996. I vouched for it being authentic and still representative of how people cook today. Even busy families know that sitting together at the table at the end of the day is a great way to unwind and to strengthen the body and mind. They value the time to listen to each other while eating slowly (no tv or other distractions). My friends and family in Belgium may sometimes bring ready made food (excellent quality is available there) but all know how to cook, do it often, and enjoy the process as a way to relax and nurture the family.
4-0 out of 5 stars A little taste of Belgium
I purchased this book for a Belgian-themed party I was hosting, and was not disappointed. Although it was a bit sparse on quick, easy to put together party foods, it had enough recipes that I still had a tough time choosing which to make. Everything was delicious, and well-described in the book. My guests were impressed. Nothing I chose to make was any more difficult than Ms. Van Waerebeek led me to believe.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes (but quibbles about the rose-colored glasses!)
As an American living in Flanders for many years I can vouch for the authenticity of the recipes and the quality of the results. There's a lot of good stuff in here, and it's well worth the purchase. I would only urge you not to read this book as a travel guide! The author must have been away from the country for quite a long time and her cultural information is pretty dated, or she is looking back with rose-colored glasses. For example, for all the romanticizing about Belgian home cooking I don't know anyone under retirement age who actually cooks much - the women are all working just like everywhere else in the world nowadays and most of this stuff gets bought in stores, not made at home. It's telling that she describes learning to cook at the shoulder of her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, but that she herself is a professional cook - about the only job where people have time to prepare time-consuming dishes anymore, including in Belgium.

5-0 out of 5 stars ATaste of Heaven
After many trips to Maui over the years we finally tried Hali'Imaile General Store. It was my Birthday and wanted to try a new place. What a treat! The service was the best Joan was our fantastic Server and made us feel like Royalty. Her suggestions made our dinner the very best it could be. Since that first trip we have had many, many dinners and taken our Clients and family there for dinner, we get such rave reviews we seldom take new Clients anywhere else except when in a hurry on time or for a little more casual bite we go to "that other place" they have ribs too! We enjoy the fantastic variety of foods. I fell in love with the fishcakes at first bite had to go back the next day and ordered them just for me NO!sharing. My family and friends know if you want to please me with a "gift" a dinner gift certicaate works.Where else would I want to go. One of my favorite deserts Pina Colada Cheesecake this was the most Heavenly taste. I tell people when we take them to the Restraunt its WONDERFUL and still they cant believe how good the food and service is. Mahalo for all the great times we have had at your Place and they other place too! Bev & Joe you have really done a great job keep up your part and we'll keep up ours "eatting at your places with family, friends and clients" My best Friend gave me a gift certificate after 2 trips to the restraunt in a week we had to go back to Portland, Joan sujested since I love the food why not take a cookbook back so I did.My daughter who loves cooking stole my book. So had to buy a new. Need to be able to get a fishcake fix. Now after several more trips we now live here and eat at both of your places alot. Have to go to Joes for Crab Dip. They to have a great staff but there is no place like Hali'Imaile General Store.I flew to PDX on business 15 times this year always tell people on the flight they have to go eat at both your places it never suprises me when we run into those people at dinner. Now I'm hungry I think I'll go make reservation for dinner tonite!!!!! See you at Hali'Imaile General Store we are the couple at the table by the window! Agian Much Mahalo Bev & Joe You have done a great job! Maui has alot of fine Dinnng and truly this is our Favorite!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful as it is good!
The Portuguese Bean Soup recipe is really the best I've ever had.5-0 out of 5 stars WowWee Maui
I purchased this book several months ago in anticipation of hosting a baby shower with a luau theme.I spent several months agonizing over which of the many amazing dishes I should make.I settled on the soba noodle salad, pork tenderloin with pineapple chutney (I omited the mushroom polenta) Paella and pineapple pie. It was amazing.although the recipes involve a boatload of chopping, and in some cases, a lot of ingredients, most can be made one or two days ahead.Anyone interested in fresh, complex flavors and textures should buy this book.My guests ran the gamet of tastes and ages, but I ended up with very few leftovers.I am a cookbook affeciando and I say this is a Great Great Book.I'd even fly to Maui to have them cook for me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
It seems ridiculous to try to describe a cookbook as "peaceful" but this cookbook really is. Just reading it almost always fills me with the feeling I get when I am working on a familiar, much-loved recipe for people I care about on a special occasion, which unfortunately is rare. I think that is the magic of this author and this book; the author really seems to approach every meal as a celebration--but a celebration of simple things, as the title says. 5-0 out of 5 stars With a unique and tranquil culinary spirit
The delightful recipes comprising Brother Victor-Antoine's Simplicity From A Monastery Kitchen brings a unique and tranquil culinary spirit to today's hectic life style. From Eggs in Potato Croustades, Gnocchi with Arugula and Watercress, and Deauville Shrimp Bisque, to Jerusalem Artichoke Salad, St. Anthony's Bread, and Natas (a Portuguese dessert from an old nunnery), Simplicity From A Monastery Kitchen recipes combine natural ingredients for satisfying, nourishing, elegantly flavored cuisine that would grace any table. ...
