5-0 out of 5 stars Daisy Rocks!
Yea, Daisy....do your "thang"...as a Latina who cooks the typical Latin cuisine, I found myself wanting to try out her recipes after watching her show.Daisy puts her stamp on her recipes because she has a flair that can be found in her genuine love for culture and food.I stocked up on her "Top Ten Hits" and my kitchen has been rocking!I highly recommend this book, the instructions are clear, the pictures are mouth-watering, and the stories are endearing.I only wish they add more shows to the network.Oh yea.... when you buy this book, try the Carne Mechada (Puerto Rican Pot Roast) with the Roasted Garlic String Beans Your kitchen will sing with all of the wonderful smells and your family will thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal
This cookbook is excellent.Daisy captured the essence of latin cuisine. Not only did she share numerous authentic Puerto Rican recipes, but she also presented recipes that reflected other latin influences. This is a very diverse cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and fun to make.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daisy is Adorable & So Are Her Recipes
I love watching Daisy cook!I actually smashed and fried plantains for the first time after watching her show. The book is worth every penny and the DVD of her cooking program is a bonus.I actually bought one of those DVD players for the kitchen to help me view Daisy's cooking techniques as I cook. I can't imagine why anyone would find this woman annoying. She's creative, high energy and delivers extremely useful information on cooking while using metaphors intelligently.I love how she shares her family's Latino heritage and love of food so naturally with the viewing public. This woman's a total star. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A celebration of food, easy preparations, and growing older with culinary taste in mind.
Over a thousand recipes follow the credo 'if it's not delicious, we're not eating it!', and come from the experienced kitchens of the over-50 Red Hat Society ladies. Unlike most cookbooks, desserts begin the introduction with dishes ranging from a low-fat Lemon Icebox Pie to Spiced Eggnog Cheesecake and a moist Pink Lady Cake. Soups, breads, salads and main dishes follow in a celebration of food, easy preparations, and growing older with culinary taste in mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Divine Dancing Diva Approved !
As a member in RED standing of the Divine Sisterhood of the Dancing Divas, Red Hat Society-- this is not only a great book about our group but an excellent multi-purpose cookbook as well. Some of the high points are a collection of the "Impossible" recipes using baking mix that are always easy and tasty.Additionally, a large section in the back is devoted to cooking for one or two and this is especially welcome.I tried about a half dozen recipes, each was easy to follow and turned out yummy. My only suggestion or comment is that the print is a little small, but that is simply to accomodate the large number of recipes included.A good addition to any cookbook collection and a charming gift for anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Things are really pass down!!!! Must have book!!!
When I read this cook book I realize how things are just pass down through generations. Regardless if you've been born in this country. The cooking styles are the same and I soon realize how the women in my family cook must of the food that's in this book... This is an amazing book and Thank You too the Chef!!! 5-0 out of 5 stars Soul is the Proper Noun
Having been to Africa, I know a little about the enchantment of at least parts of that vast continent.I admit I love Africa, Africans, and African food. I've looked for a book like this for quite a while and I am not at all diappointed at what I see here.I love the way this book is organized and written, and it is not the recipes alone that have whetted my appetite. The stunning photographs have made me long for a return trip so I can greedily consume the colors and sounds as well as the food of these exotic places.Until then, this book is the next best thing to being there!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Look at the World
If you enjoy the Material World series, you will love this book.It is a fantastic look at something that we all share, food, and how it can be so different around the world.Like traveling without leaving your couch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today.Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hungry Planet.I loved seeing the photos of each family representing a country on this great planet. It made me think about how much I pay for food during the week, and what my family eats. It also showed that the countries that ate more vegetables and less processed foods seemed to have less diseases and spent less.I also liked to read how members in thefamilies helped each other out with daily chores. I especially found the essay titled, Baked, Boiled, Roasted and Fried interesting. It was about how humans are the only species on Earth that cooks their food and that humans are not carnivores, but cookivores. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading other books by the this author and photographer team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mangoes and Curry and so Much More, Oh My!
Mangoes & Curry Leaves is one of my favorite cookbooks and I have scores of Indian cookbooks, as I'm sort of a gourmet chef. I wrote a cooking column for a sailing magazine for a couple years and one of my favorite articles was my "Two Ways to Tandoori" which you can read in one of my "Amazon So You'd Like to Guides," if you want. Tandoori chicken is just delicious. Anyway, while I was making the guide, I listed fifty cookbooks from my collection. I have more. I know, I know, one would think a couple books would be enough, but it's sort of an obsession with me, making food taste great and I just love to see how others have done it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and authentic
I cannot imagine anyone writing anything negative about this book...my family and I come from Bangladesh and India and I have tons of Pakistani friends. The depth that the authors have gone into understanding ingredients and the cooking is remarkable. I cannot imagine how they came to know some of those details. Like my neighbor in PA who had written a negative review, I have also Jaffrey's books which i love but Alford and Duguid got into the very essence of real home cooking of the subcontinent.Other authors sometimes focus on party foods while this book advises the readers on what people really eat on a daily basis. The other travel advice is interesting and the photographs gorgeous although i understand the concerns of the Bethlehem, PA reviewer of pictures that are hard to interpret. Just let it go. They still do an even better job with this book than Hot Sour Salty Sweet. The book is great. I'm glad amazon offers it for a lower price than bookstores.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good work in a cookbook/travelogue
I am a novice American learning to cook Indian style.I have studied enough books to know that sticking curry powder in a melange of stewing vegetables is not really "getting it" in terms of creating an authentic Indian meal.In my search for authenticity, I think Alford & Duguid go a long way in presenting just that, scouring the villages & cities of India.

5-0 out of 5 stars A meal in itself...
This book is delicious! There are excellent photos of both the dishes and the different areas and peoples of the Silk Road,The text is interesting, with information about history, cultures, cooking techniques, and food items.I appreciate that the recipes are not complicated or particularly labor-intensive.I have tried three so far, and all three were hits.I have a large collection of cookbooks, but if I had to start all over again, this one would be one of my first buys.

5-0 out of 5 stars spectacular and delicious
this is a beautiful book with somewhat complex recipes but educational. my friend borrowed it to use it in her geography class covering the silk road topic. the pictures are spectacular. it is classified as paperback but the quality of paper and print make it as durable and beautiful as a hardback. i strongly recommend this book not just for the wonderful recipes also to amuse your eyes. let your imaginations travel!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike
This beautiful and highly readable cookbook contains delicious, if somewhat complex, recipes for dishes from Italy to China. All of them are vegetarian, but many could be adapted to meat eaters, or used as an accompaniment. If used as an accompaniment, bear in mind that the cookbook is targeted to vegetarians who plan to make th main dish the bulk of their meal; double the number served if used as an accompaniment. If you love to cook, this book will inspire you and add variety to your repetoire. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hands-down the best Mideast cookbook out there
After perusing dozens of English-language Middle Eastern cookbooks over the years - none of which I found to be as comprehensive and authentic (based on my experience being raised in the Arab world) as I wanted - I was wonderfully surprised to receive this tome as a wedding gift. May Bsisu does a wonderful job explaining how to cook traditional Arabic dishes and the spectrum of the recipes she includes is impressive. I highly, highly, highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start
If you are an experienced cook but do not know Arabian cuisine, but this book.If you are not experienced, you can use this book successfully. If your introduction to the Mediterranean was with David, this is a good next book at the distance of a half century; while Bsisu does not have David's recepies for Melokhia or Chatchouka, David was in no position to bring you enough of the southern shores.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended !!
A famous French chef told me this book is outstanding.I bought it and agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars Culinary trip around the world for the novice and seasoned home cook.
Broad selection of international recipes. Well written and organized. Recipes are spare in the Bittman "minimalist" style with interesting and informative sidenotes. Chapters organized from appetizers, soups, salads, fish, poultry, meat, vegetables to condiments, desserts and beverages allow easy comparison and contrasting of cuisines for the same foods. Each recipe is catagorized "make ahead," serve at room temp/cold," "30 minutes or less."and indexed by cuisine. The index is very helpful for menu planning and selecting culinary themes. It is a fun book to read and easy book to use. For the novice as well as the seasoned home cook. Nice addition to cookbook library.

I have never written a review of a cookbook, but I just received a copy of this excellent book. I get many cookbooks as gifts- primarily from my kids. This is the best cookbook I have ever received.I have been fortunate to have eaten at Dona Tomas in Oakland which is one of the many reasons I was interested in this book. Another aspect is the excellent review the book received in the LA TImes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thomas Kinkaid painting in a book
This book made me feel so happy and peaceful everytime I read it.I just hate to finish it.It really gets into the detail of truly enjoying all the simple pleasures of everyday life.

1-0 out of 5 stars not so good...
this book really isn't that good.for one, all this guy talks about is his restaurants and how they serve things this way and that way and always name drops.i don't mind it here or there, but every other page, come on, give me a break.the worst part is the way the book is written.this book is geared towards 65 year old women who are niave as hell and want to read a romantic book about how honey tastes from local farms in france and bs like that.save ur self some money and just take a trip to france to see how they live.this book really sucks...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Roast Chicken Recipe
The simplicity of the roast chicken recipe in this book for me personifies the lifestyle described herein. It's a book that made me think about the changes I needed to make in my own lifestyle. What price has my body has actually been paying for convenience. What is the true meaning of portion control: is it better to buy low-fat products full of the unnatural and eat a lot of it, or is it better to buy naturally-fat products and eat less. I vote for the second. I've made serious changes because of this book and others that I've read about European culture. There's a lot that they do that makes a lot of sense. There's a saying, what does it profit to gain the world and lose your soul. This book, and others like it, are helping me keep my soul and making me mindful of the important things in life, such as my life and my health. I can spend an hour preparing a simple meal for myself when I get off work (a chicken breast, some frozen green beans or broccoli, a small glass of wine), or I can spend it being sedentary in front of a TV set. I no longer stock the freezer for the next holocaust, but buy as I need, maybe a week's worth, that's it. The Splenda is gone in favor of real baker's sugar. Pitchers of herbal teas have replaced Pepsi. And I've rediscovered walking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tips & Ideas On Safely Eating Out With Gluten/Food Allergies!
This book has been very helpful as a mom of a 2 yr old food allergy child. When my daughter was diagnosed with a couple of severe food allergies and many sensitivies, we had not dined out for a while. This book has helped to truly understand what to look out for and how to manage the eating out process. It's easy to use and I was impressed by the tips and knowledge relating to dealing with the specific top 10 allergens when dining out.Not only does it deal with the 10 allergens but relates them to each of the 7 cuisines such as Indian, American Steak and Seafood, French, etc. giving helpful tips on how allergens may be "hidden" or used in preparation that you would never expect. The book helps you to identify these items and communicate effectively with the restaurant staff. In addition, there is also useful information on safely choosing snacks when you are out, travel, etc.The book has helped me gain confidence in dining out as a family again. The book is a great read for those with celiac, food allergies or even parents of children with food allergies!

"Let's Eat Out!" will make you hungry and give you the power to protect yourself from food allergies at the same time. This series is an amazingly comprehensive guide that is sure to help thousands of people to feel more in control of their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is what it is
Pretty coffee table book...don't buy for the recipes unless you are a professional.I am a chef and have been at several for and five star establishments.I had the pleasure a few years ago to do a banquet with Susur and he is the real deal. Will his techniques translate to the amateur cook looking to learn from his book? No.These are professional recipes designed to be executed by a top class brigade with years of technique and time to prepare the needed mis en place. But as a professional, the way he approaches food as well as the culinary foundation that he has built for himself is unique and will be appreciated by those in the know. What isn't pretentious about a $50 coffee table book? This book gives exposure to a unique and talented chef who is grounded in solid technique and is able to translate that into well presented and balanced dishes that are not silly fusion.Definetly worth a look.

5-0 out of 5 stars Susur Lee
This book its all about creativity by a man who has been over looked for too many years as one of the worlds Top Chefs. This book is in one simple word "Awesome"

5-0 out of 5 stars Susur: Some Thoughts on Perfection in Cuisine
Given the acidity of previous reviews, let me start with some background on myself: I am an American not resident in Canada; I am a non-professional chef -- I cook for myself, my family and my friends. I love food, both from the philosophy that one can learn the history of a country or region by learning about its cuisine and from the perspective that I truly believe we are what we eat ... and the miserable record of American health and longevity is directly due to the poor quality of what we consume.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Price!
I just got the book today it has tons of recipes I am just disappointed that there are no pictures in the book. The recipes are great reminding me back to the day of childhood. But I found many other Jewish cook books with these same recipes in them at cheaper price with pictures! Look around for other Jewish cookbooks on amazon. You will find a few. Unfortunately I did that after I bought thisexpensive book when I found out this has not 1 picture in it. This Cookbook is expensive and for the price it should at least have pictures. I rate it 3 stars but I accidentally hit the 4 star rating.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Big Collection of Published Recipes. Nothing Else
The best and worst thing one can say about this book is that it is just a very large collection of ancient and modern recipes whose ingredients and preparation conform to at least conservative Jewish dietary laws. It is very similar to a collection of all English Language published sonnets ranging from Shakespeare to the little old lady in Nebraska who publishes in her local newspaper. Everything has been published and everything follows certain rules, but all connections between the collected items ends there.4-0 out of 5 stars vicarious weight gain
I put on 8 lbs. just reading one chapter. Like most endeavors of the NYT, it is both authoritative and encyclopedic in scope. While it sticks maily to traditional Kosher and Jewish dishes, it shows some respect for Israeli cooking, usually given short shrift in "American Kosher" cookbooks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what I'm talking about!
I congratulate the Three Guys on their new book! I discovered their website years ago and have found it an invaluable resource for information on Cuban food and culture. I purchased their early online recipe book and still use it today. I also bought their first hardcover book and pre-ordered this second hardcover as soon as it was available.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enthusiastically recommended
The collaborative effort of Glenn Lindgren, Raul Musibay, Jorge Castillo, "Three Guys From Miami Celebrate Cuban: 100 Great Recipes For Cuban Entertaining" is an ethnic collection of mouth-watering cuisine and a "how to" guide for celebrating and partying "Cuban Style". There are whole chapters devoted to Cuban oriented desserts, drinks, appetizers, soups, entrees, side dishes, and even backyard grilling. Enhanced with a 'Cuban Food Glossary' and a list of sources for acquiring special ingredients for Cuban dishes, the recipes comprising "Three Guys From Miami Celebrate Cuban" range from 'Cake de Guayaba' (Guava Cake), to 'Ensalada de Fluevos' (Egg Salad), to 'Pollo de la Plancha' (Grilled Chicken Breasts), to 'Coctel de Frutas Tropical' (Tropical Fruit Cocktail). Wonderfully illustrated throughout with full color photography of finished dishes, "Three Guys From Miami Celebrate Cuban" is a particularly "user friendly" and enthusiastically recommended addition to any kitchen cook's ethnic cuisine oriented cookbook collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars El Segundo Hit!
Can there be anything wrong with a cookbook that starts with desserts up front.......?Definitely not in my opinion, especially when the first recipe is for Coconut Rice Pudding!

4-0 out of 5 stars Chef Bourdain strikes again!
The book if fun to read.Buy it.All right, borrow it from your library. This travel-food-olog mixes wild & interesting places and wild & interesting foods in about equal amounts.Yes, Mr. Bourdain does write like a chef, but what the heck?In his words, that's "pretty neat."
3-0 out of 5 stars confused in my reaction--great content, less than thrilling execution
I can't figure what holds me back about his book.I love Anthony Bourdain's attitude about food and his philosophy about what makes a great meal.I love his desire for absolutely fresh food, right off the bleeding stick or never touching a refrigerator, and I admire the distinctions he makes about how food looks and how it tastes--my wife is one who cannot get over the appearance of food and lets it affect her enjoyment of it, while I don't care how food looks, but simply want good-tasting stuff.I love Bourdain's sense of experimentalism, his willingness to try live cobra heart, and his sense of adventure, how he searches out a fugu chef (who knows how to properly prepare poisonous blowfish), and my wife is now relieved that I take Bourdain at his word that the stuff doesn't really have much flavor and wasn't quite worth all the excitement.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gonzo-gastronomic Writing at it's best
It's never quite clear whether Bourdain is really after the 'perfect meal' or just expanding his repertoir of local libations.Either way, he sounds like he's having a heck of time eating, drinking, and razing the Food Network crew trailing him.Not every chapter is stellar, nor is there a particularly coherent thread, but the good chapters are bitingly hilarious and will make you want to eat things you didn't know were edible!
