3-0 out of 5 stars Great content, LOUSY MANUFACTURING
I use this book a lot. The publisher chose to cut costs by perfect-binding 1156 pages, a big NO-NO. (Perfect binding is the kind of glued binding used for paperbacks, but they at least have the added strength of the paper-back cover.) Here the perfect-bound pages are inserted into a hard-cover case, and have no support. The binding broke after two or three openings, pretty bad for a book you want to use often.

5-0 out of 5 stars My absolute FIRST choice for everything book!
This is an excellent cookbook that I go to for everything from soups, deserts, conversions, cooking times, etc.I haven't made a bad dish yet and have been cooking from this book for 6 years. My husband and I received it as a wedding present and it has been a golden reference. If you are looking for a good basic cookbook, this is the one for you. Many of the recipes provide some geographical or historical context for the dish, which I find interesting and makes for great dinner conversation.Don't be intimidated by the length or number of ingredients in some of the recipes. These such recipes provide that flavor layering effect which takes the taste of the finished project off the charts!

2-0 out of 5 stars A far cry from the old classic favorite!
I was so disappointed in this version! I have a "Joy" from the mid-1950s and one from the early 1980s -- I would chose either old one over this one any day. The print is terrible and the tone is smug and elitist. It doesn't act as a foundation for cooks -- it assumes you already know everything! PLUS, despite my not using it very often, the binding came apart and pages came out (after less than two years.) Find an old "Joy" on ebay and you'll be happier! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't like the binder...
I am a collector of taste of home cookbooks. When I saw this new release I pre-ordered it. while I enjoyed the recipes I found the binder to be cumbersome. The pages are not easy to turn, and the spine was dented. The page stock is thin and not durable. I think I prefer the standard format cookbooks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Real food, for real people packed w/ info extras.
I have long been a fan of the Taste of Home magazine & would collect their annual "Yearbooks" of recipes. Naturally I had to add this to my collection and was pleasantly surpised by the addition of a conversion and substitution chart on the inside cover. The lay out of the book itself is orderly and in each section includes a wealth of information on everything from different cheeses, meat preparation, utensils, what goes well with what etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Southern Cooking
Paula Deen creates recipes to tempt your tastebuds in this collection of recipes. They are simple to make, often requiring only those ingredients that are on-hand in your kitchen. The results are satisfying and delicious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quickly becomming my favorite cookbook!
This book has been out for about 10 years now, but I only picked up a copy of it about a year ago and it has quickly become one of my favorite cookbooks. THE LADY & SONS SAVANNAH COUNTRY COOKBOOK is chock full of not only delicious recipes, but most are fairly simple to prepare.
4-0 out of 5 stars This looks like a good one.
I can't wait to try more of the recipes in this book.I have a lot of cookbooks, and many of them contain recipes I know I will never make, either because they're too complicated or just don't appeal to me, period. This book, however, lists recipes that are generally short and simple, and the food items look very down-to-earth and appetizing.I bought the book in the first place because several of my friends at work said it was their favorite and contained honest-to-goodness "real" food and meals their families like.I think they're right about that. ... Warmly effusive and dear yet gritty, Paula H. Deen seems mythically Southern. But this cooking luminary, proprietor of Savannah, Georgia'sLady & Sons restaurant, is the real thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars what can I say?
the book is by Paula Deen so it has to be great! My experience buying it through Amazon was the norm - great prices, prompt delivery, and product just as described.........who could ask for more??

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing great
Read the recipes carefully, mistakes abound. Desserts pretty good, alot of box mixes, etc.. Really doesn't teach alot about cooking, but recipes are easy and some are very quick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrumptous
I absolutely love Paula and this is the first cookbook of hers that I've bought. The book has a great layout (cakes, pies, cookies, bars, etc.) There are a few pictures (they are not on the same pages as their recipes) that make me want to bake even more! Everything in the book sounds so delicious but the thing that really got me was her pound cake. Now she has about 5 or 6 pound cake variations - I tried the cream cheese variation. Over the past 6 months I have been searching for "the" pound cake recipe and have tried a ton of different ones always with disappointment. When I tried Paula's I kept my expectations low and I was blown away!! It actually tasted like pound cake, not too sweet, not to floury--just perfect!!! I can't wait to try the rest of her recipes, for each ten I looked at I would deffinitely try at least 8 and consider the other 2! A minor disappointment is that some of her recipes call for pre-made cake mixes. Although it is great for cutting down on time I suppose, I don't see the sense in putting pre-made mixes into a cookbook. Still doesn't take away from the flavor or temptation of her desserts. Excellence! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE
To the person who thought Paula mentioned her ingredients you "had to buy" in these cookbooks...there aren't any.I don't think she even has a food line.I think you may be talking about the fact that she has "the Lady's House Seasoning" in several recipes. The recipe for that is in the cookbook: all it is in salt, pepper and garlic. You don't buy it.As for the cookbook: You know those cookbooks you go to every time you want the most amazing tried and true and incredibly good recipes: for company, for family, for when you KNOW it will be incredible no matter what recipe you try? These are those cookbooks...you will always reach for them first.I happen to own about 100 cookbooks and these are the best ones: We are chefs who own a food lines (Terra Sol and Romeo's) so we are a very picky and food-loving household...and let me tell you, these will be your favorite cookbooks whether you love Southern cooking or just really good food...you can't lose. It's like purchasing that costly pair of shoes that you wear all the time so they are worth it: this will be like your favorite pair yet it's a bargain so it makes it even better!

5-0 out of 5 stars great day all mighty
FORGET what e brown says. What was this person thinking???? I will tell you that these are recipes that for the most part include ingredients that any southern cook will find on hand at any time. Simple, easy, and very tasty recipes that your family will love. If some appear to have a high fat content and that bothers you then use your brain and take measures accordingly. It really is that easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paula's the BEST
To the lady who gave Paula's book a 1 star because it's all fattening & salty foods--puhleeze!She said she watches the show--do you really?Paula is a southern cook and southern cooking is full of rich food; she always says her favorite food is butter! Her cookbooks are fantastic; every time I make something to bring to the office or to a potluck, I use one of her recipes and they always get rave reviews and requests for the recipe. She's the tops!

5-0 out of 5 stars Home cooking at it's best!
Tried & true favorites, along with some new ones. It doesn't get any more tasty or simple than the recipes in this collection. The two books together are a great deal & cover just about anything you'd ever want to whip up in the kitchen. Even if cooking is not your thing, Paula's recipes are so yummy, they might help change your mind. ... Read more

With all the new channels for distribution available and considering all of the innovations in communications (both message and medium) the stakes are not only increasing rapidly -they have been moved. My opinion, the future will very likely be populated by brands that are defined less by big marketing firms and more by real people. This book seems to be ignoring the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A celebration of food, easy preparations, and growing older with culinary taste in mind.
Over a thousand recipes follow the credo 'if it's not delicious, we're not eating it!', and come from the experienced kitchens of the over-50 Red Hat Society ladies. Unlike most cookbooks, desserts begin the introduction with dishes ranging from a low-fat Lemon Icebox Pie to Spiced Eggnog Cheesecake and a moist Pink Lady Cake. Soups, breads, salads and main dishes follow in a celebration of food, easy preparations, and growing older with culinary taste in mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Divine Dancing Diva Approved !
As a member in RED standing of the Divine Sisterhood of the Dancing Divas, Red Hat Society-- this is not only a great book about our group but an excellent multi-purpose cookbook as well. Some of the high points are a collection of the "Impossible" recipes using baking mix that are always easy and tasty.Additionally, a large section in the back is devoted to cooking for one or two and this is especially welcome.I tried about a half dozen recipes, each was easy to follow and turned out yummy. My only suggestion or comment is that the print is a little small, but that is simply to accomodate the large number of recipes included.A good addition to any cookbook collection and a charming gift for anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little bit newer desired
When I was first married, in 1966, I received a Betty Crocker cookbook that I wore out through so much use. I bought a newer version but didn't like it as much as my older one. I was trying to duplicate the older one when I bought this one. I think was trying to find one that was published a little later than this one. I don't really like the way the index is set up in this one but I do appreciate the good amount of basic information provided for a new cook.

4-0 out of 5 stars A "must have", but...
Does contain very helpful information for the beginning cook left out of many "general" cookbooks. All the recipes turn out well, unlike recipes in some other cookbooks that seem like nobody ever tried before publishing them. Good for building confidence in a new cook.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with the original!
My grandmother used this cookbook religiously for years and through it, taught me to love cooking and baking. Her original book was lost over the years, so I was delighted to get this version. It's absolutely perfect and so many recipes bring back fond memories. The recipes are simple and basic enough that I can share them with my 5-year-old daughter. We love the blueberry muffins and my husband raves about the pineapple upside down cake. Still my favorite cookbook! Thanks Betty! :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My go-to for new dinners
I am recently married and love to cook, and of the several new cookbooks I got, this is the one I use the most, especially for "real life" cooking. It's organized well, so I know where to look if I want to cook chicken, meat, pasta, fish, cookies, something in the crock pot, etc. Each recipe I've tried has turned out well, and has been worth the effort involved. I bought a copy for my sister, so now I'm constantly telling her "Try that spicy chicken and rice bake, we loved it."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter & Basic Cookbook
I received this cook book as a wedding present 3 years ago and have been very pleased with it.
5-0 out of 5 stars My most trusted cookbook!
I love this cook book! It has TONS of great recipes. Everything from cakes, pies, and breads, to pastas and various meat and vegetable dishes. It even has a recipe for homemade pasta. I was really amazed at how many great recipes it contains. Plus, I know I can trust it because Homes and Gardens tests their recipes. So, far I have only tried a few but every one has turned out great! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious........
This book kept me laughing for hours on end. I am from the south and had an occasion to spend 6 months in Greenville, Miss. recently, so having been there, met lots of natives, etc. made it even more comical. While reading the book you can almost hear the accent of the "Southern Ladies" in conversation. Gayden really has a way of turning mundane everyday life in the Delta, into one hilarious situation after another. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories and great recipes as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A taste of the deep south
I found this such a humorous and, for me, sentimental read. For each incident and character, I have enough life experiences in the deep south to be able relate the tale to characters and events in my past, including seeing ladies examine invitations from an angle to be sure they are engraved ("that beauty-graving is so tacky"). I am going to buy a couple copies for family members who I am sure will love this book as much as I do.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but I didn't like it that much
The book was recommended to me by an elderly Southern lady with a great sense of humor, so I had high hopes.

Dr. Agatston developed the diet for his chronically overweight heart patients. Soon, thanks to his patients' results, Dr. Agatston's diet became all the buzz in Miami.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes
Eat less calories and burn more of them through exercising. It sounds simple, but it's not easy to do.So I turned to South Beach diet. I've found this to be a very practical diet. After the initial first two weeks (the strictest) I've lost about 5 pounds. But, I've done no exercise whatsoever and have eating quite a bit which accounts for the lower than the average weight loss.Check the net for more FREE info.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Makes Me Want to Drink A Whole Glass of Buttermilk
The Lee Bros. Cookbook is really inspiring--it makes me want to take the day off and go crabbing, mix up a frosty pitcher of mint julips for my friends, or drink a whole glass of buttermilk (like my Grandpa used to do). It makes me--a New Yorker via Southern California--want to go to the South! Right now, this very minute. The recipes are welcoming, homey, conjure images of grandma's kitchen (Grandma was from Chicago but made a mean fried chicken and biscuit). They are also elegant in their simplicity, in their respect for pure, fresh ingredients--and completely unpretentious. The book includes a long, affectionate mediation on grits (a much maligned delicious food): lemon grits, herb grits blue cheese grits!!! It is truly grit-tastic. Vegetarians who love Southern food--take heart--this book loves you: collards, okra, field peas, squash, jerusalem artichokes and ramps! The buttermilk lime dressing and pimento cheese sandwiches are killer. And of course, there is plenty of meat--things like hot-pepper roasted duck and fiery BBQ pork tenderloin, not to mention the classic--fried chicken.
5-0 out of 5 stars delectable prose
The Lee Bros.' recipes are fantastic, but the writing itself is the real marvel here. I never expect a cookbook to be a good read, but this book's lyrical prose should be savored and the delicious stories should be served again and again. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A winner.
CHRISTMAS WITH SOUTHERN LIVING 2006 (0848731158, $29.95) isn't strictly a cookbook, though recipes are its core: it combines menus and time-saving holiday plans as well as party ideas with dishes which lend to entertainment and family gatherings. Many are fast, easy editor's picks, with chapters handily divided by type of entertainment: brunch buffet, office party, dinner party, and the like. A winner.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Up To Snuff
Like many of you, I collect these books year after year. This year was very disappointing. The book really is mainly recipes.I don't buy them for that, although the few I try are good. I buy this book mainly for the decorating and gift ideas. This year the book is really lacking in them.In years past they've shown how to decorate the outside of your house, the mantle, the table, and just about anywhere in a house that you could put a decoration. This year you basically have one mantle. That's it.Sorry, this book had me saying to myself, "I paid full price for this!!"
