1-0 out of 5 stars worst cookbook
this is the dumbest cookbook i ordered. i was interested in using Le Creuset cook ware instead of receipes for food i would never in my lifetime be caught dead eating. Who in their right mind would even think of cooking the trash they present in the book. i would advice anyone to not buy this stupid book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Its a bit unrealistic for me
I like the book overall. I can tell by the other reviewers that it's the type of book for folks with a lot to say about cooking. I wanted to have ideas on how to use my new cookware. I found the recipes a bit over the top with a lot of veal(never a good idea) and unsavory/expensive/hard to obtain cuts of meat. I love the recipes I used but a lot of the book is useless to me. I am a mother of two young children and I enjoy cooking well and trying new things but this might be a book I need to shelve until later in life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Attractive intro to collectable cookware. Poor Translation
`Le Creuset Cookbook', written in French by Elisa Vergne and David Rathgeber, and translated into English by Josephine Bacon is all about cooking with the wares produced by the French cookware company, Le Creuset, which is possibly the most popular line of cookware used by professional chefs and serious foodie amateurs. I was really impressed with the relative importance of the Le Creuset casseroles and Dutch ovens especially when every single show on the Food Network used Le Creuset products. At first, I thought it was just because the enameled insides of the big Dutch ovens were white, so it was easier to see on camera what was happening in the pot. I promptly got several pieces and became immediately addicted to using the 8 quart Dutch ovens and the great brasserie dishes (covered, shallow braising pans).

5-0 out of 5 stars Exotic Ice Cream Flavors
Nearly everyone at some point or another has owned an ice cream maker. Dreams of creamy frozen delights circle in their heads as they read the instructions and attempt to concoct brilliant ice cream recipes. Yet, many of these owners soon realize, blending the right mix of cream and flavorings can deter anyone from approaching the machine a second time.
5-0 out of 5 stars re: eggless ice creams
B Trott, the person complaining above about the eggless ice cream, has no idea what s/he is talking about. Ice creams made without eggs are very common and are known as "Philadelphia style" or "American style" ice creams. Ones with eggs are called "custard style" or "French style." You do not need a thickener; the freezing process thickens the cream. I made this recipe with no problem. B Trott may have failed to chill the canister sufficiently or churn for long enough. You also need to let homemade ice cream ripen in the freezer after churning to give it additional firmness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good variety, including toppings and swirls
This is approximately the twelfth ice cream book in my collection, so I'm only buying books that add information I don't already have. This one's a winner! In addition to a good selection of recipes for all sorts of normal and exotic flavors, this book includes: (1) recipes for toppings and swirls (fudge, caramel, fruit, etc.); (2) recipes with especially intense flavors (a quart or so of ice cream including a whole cup of peanut butter, for example); and (3) several approaches to the same flavor, so you could make vanilla frozen yogurt, vanilla ice milk, or several styles of vanilla ice cream (and then adapt those styles to other flavors). ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I have only made one recipe from this cookbook. It was very tasty, but required some "pre-cooking" before putting all the ingredients in the crock pot. Many of the recipes call for this. I really don't want to have to saute first and then use the slow cooker. I want to cut down on time. Also, many of the recipes call for using a coffee can or rack in the bottom of the crock pot. I don't have empty clean coffee cans lying around and my crock pot doesn't have a rack.

2-0 out of 5 stars If looking for all day crock-pot recipes - don't bother
What a dissapointment. I was looking for a book with recipes in which I could set the crock pot up and go to work, coming home to dinner. Which is the reason why I bought it. This is not the book for that - these seem to be regular recipes that could be made in a regular oven much more easily. There is a significant amount of preparation for almost all of them, and I can't seem to find any benefit to using the crock pot rather than a regular oven, which sort of defeats the point. Most recipes take far less hours than are in a regular workday, or need to be turned off or stirred during cooking. Simply not worth the money unless you have a lot of time on your hands, or work from home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
A few weird dishes that I wouldn't do in a slow cooker (they're in other slow cooker books too) but the dishes that seem like they should be cooked in a slow cooker that I've tried have been very tasty.I use it when my other cookbooks aren't inspiring me.Recipes are very easy and straightforward ... Being a vegetarian for over ten years I have many cookbooks on the subject and this is definately one of the best. What a wonderfully well written book, easy to follow and every one of the dishes I have tried have beendelicious. This is not only great for veggies but also make wonderful mealsfor those carnivores in the family. Some of the recipes take a little timeto prepare, but the end results absolutely make the effort worthwhile.

1-0 out of 5 stars Returning book immediately
I ordered this book hoping to find some good recipes for BBQing but instead I found a book that would you give part of the recipe and then you need the secret ingredient, cookshack's rib rub. Most of the recipes require you to order different types of rubs from cookshack instead of giving you the information needed to make the rub.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing at best.....
I purchased a Cookshack smoker over 5 years ago and have experimented with it off and on.While I realize that barbeque is more art than science, I have been frustrated by the lack of information on just how much wood to use with particular recipes.I pre-ordered this book in anticipation of learning some secrets and tricks in the use of the Cookshack smoker.I waited for more than a month for delivery of the book and upon receipt of it, I eagerly delved into it looking for answers to my many questions. To my great disappointment, this book offered absolutely no information that I hadn't learned from trial and error. How much wood should I use?The book suggests that I consult the Cookshack Operator's Manual. There are some general guidelines but the guidelines don't tell you what amount of wood works best with what amount of food.Although I have had some delicious food from the Cookshack, if I am cooking for guests, I use my Brinkmann smoker as I am more confident that the food will be cooked to perfection. The water smoker takes longer, but is more forgiving than the sealed, dry smoking Cookshack. People who like to smoke fish will find 48 pages of recipes. If you prefer beef or pork, the list is much smaller, 16 and 15 pages respectively. There are also small sections dedicated to sausages, lamb and game.In short, this is a book that should have been a digest for Cookshack owners and prospective buyers. At best, it is a generic guide for smoking recipes. It doesn't promote the product line and it isn't a worthwhile choice for anyone new to smoking foods. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't want to give it back!
A friend lent me this book three months ago and I kept making excuses for not returning it.In the end, she came for lunch, and feeling guilty I thought I would just write out my favourite recipes, and ones I wanted totry ... an hour later and I was still writing! She came for lunch (Iserved Corny Bread, my favourite so far) and during dessert I was STILLwriting. She felt so bad, she told me to keep it longer. She alsosuggested I tried Amazon, and here I am and have ordered all the books inthe series, plus copies for some of my friends. This is the best BreadMachine Cookbook. It is simple, with no uneccesary information. The joy ofBread Machines is that once you have done a couple of recipes from yourInstruction book you can cook anything and don't need to be told the sameinformation over and over again.I love every recipe I have tried so farfrom this book.Everyone with a bread machine should have one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy and delicious!
I checked this book out of my public library and cried when it needed to be returned!I absolutely loved it.I tried many of the recipes and found all to be wonderful. The 4 star rating is due to the directions not alwaysbeing super clear. The book tends to deal on the level of one having hadexperience with a bread machine.Highy recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book that is easy to follow and indispensible.

3-0 out of 5 stars You'll need a casserole dish...
This book is good for basic pressure cooker info and recipes. There is a good bean cooking reference. However, some of the tastier recipes require you to place a casserole dish inside your pressure cooker. This doesn't work in my case (5 qt pressure cooker).

5-0 out of 5 stars I love the pressure cooker and this book. Why?
I work and coming home to face a pile of raw ingredients that somehow must be converted into a dinner is pretty depressing sometimes. Besides, I'm hungry too!5-0 out of 5 stars Thank heaven!
I absolutely loved this book. It saved me so much time in the kitchen. The recipes were delightful as well. If you like this book, you'll love Angela Spenceley's two new books "A Taste of the Caribbean" and "Just Add Rum! Cookbook". Both books feature recipes which can be easily adapted to the pressure cooker. A must for any good cook who wishes to add exotic island cuisine to her list of accomplishements. ... Read more

Mr. Livingston does an admirable job of explaining how to use and care for your cast-iron cookware.Whether using a skillet to scramble a few eggs for breakfast, or preparing for a LARGE crowd in a special piece of cookware, this book covers all the bases. If you've never used cast-iron cookware, this is a good introduction to the subject-- cast-iron cookware is different from the other products on the market. If you are a cast-iron afficionado, this "sermon for the choir" will give you some new ideas for good things to do with your treasured skillets and dutch ovens.Warning:the recipes are not all low-fat, low cholesterol, trendy, 90s kind of recipes. They are, however, good! This book would make a great add-on gift with a cast-iron skillet ... This book was a big disappointment to me. The recipes are too fancy for my family. I wasted money on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Dough?
If you're having problems with bread dough recipes being too thick or too thin, take a hint from James Beard on Bread:the water content of the flour varies with humidity and weather, and the only way to learn when to add more or less liquids is through practice.Sometimes, lots of practice.
1-0 out of 5 stars Did the writers actually test these recipes?
I really wanted to like this book. The photographs are gorgeous and all the recipes sound and look divine. But I have yet to try a recipe from the book that didn't need at least minor tweaking to work, and one of the recipes ended up causing a huge (and expensive) problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Slow Cooker book I was looking for
I wanted a basic but diverse slow cooker book, with kid friendly recipes. I also wanted real ingredients, not just "add two cans of soup" recipes. That weeded out almost all the cookbooks on the bookstore shelf. Best Loved had a good range of recipes, including versions of things I already make (like pea soup, or marinara sauce), so I took it home, and I'm glad I did.
5-0 out of 5 stars Also great if you need to lose a few pounds...
Watching your weight and what you're eating can be a full time occupation but I don't have a personal chef at home to do it for me.THIS BOOK IS REALLY EXCELLENT.It has a lot of tasty recipes and although this book is not intended as a weight loss diet, it has recipes that are pretty healthy!I especially like the soup recipes, they really look pretty healthy, there are a bunch that utilize lots of veggies and different spices.A lot of the recipes don't say anything about butter or margarine but the food turns out quite flavorful.By reading through the recipes, you can assemble a nice collection of spices that will really flavor up a lot of your meals. It just takes practice. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great first book of slow cooker recipes.
There are lots of different recipes in here. But the best thing is that they aren't all "add a can of cream of whatever soup." There are a few of those, too, but these are actual recipes that anyone can make. You throw everything together and a few hours later, you have dinner!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, useful cookbook for easy homemade bread
Using a bread machine is inherently simple, and this cookbook doesn't complicate matters.Abrief introduction includes a glossary of ingredients, helpful hints, and troubleshooting tips. Two main sections - "Classic and Savory Loaves" and "Special Grains and Sweet Loaves" - include dozens of recipes, all with instructions for 1-pound and 1 pound loaves.A third section includes recipes that use the bread machine to knead the dough, which is then further processed by hand and baked conventionally.A final chapter includes interesting toppings.Every recipe I have tried has worked well. The use of dry milk in recipes requiring milk allows most recipes to be made with the bread machine on a timer. The book is illustrated with attractive photographs.

All the recipies I have tried have worked with the exception of one: the Ranch Dressing Bread. It was horrible. But the Pepperoni Pizza Bread is great, one of my favorites.3-0 out of 5 stars Good but note this flaw
I've made some bread from this book very successfully, but the gingery bread has a mistake in the amount of water. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Tasting and Healthy!
This book has great recipes for wholegrain breads. If you're looking for recipes that avoid white flour and have healthy wholegrains instead, this is the book for you.5-0 out of 5 stars Good for baking with whole grains
This is a great book for anyone who owns a bread machine and wants to make different types of whole grain breads.I have found many whole grain baking bread books, but none that were specically targeted for the bread machine. This book is made specifically for bread machine bakers, which is great. She explains all the different types of flours, grains, etc. This is very helpful to learn how to make appropriate subsitutions, etc.I really like this book and am looking forward to consuming a wide variety of whole grain breads!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best healthy bread machine book yet!
I am thoroughly pleased with the recipes I have found in this book.Every one I have tried has turned out beautifully. It is almost impossible to find good spelt flour recipes, particularly for the bread machine and this book instructs how to use spelt flour to make most baked goods. If you are looking to bake healthy bread or just to expand your baking experiences, I recommend "Smart Bread Machine Recipes"thumbs up to the professional as well as the everyday home cook as there is a little something here for every baker to learn! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Big Book of Grilling, BBQ and Rotisserie Cookbook
Just bought a rotisserie and was hoping to find how to use it and good recipes. Only found about 4 or 5. I would've liken to know different types of meat you could cook in it and for how long you cook it for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Surprised at how great this book is
I got this book on a bargain table at Borders, and probably bought it because it was practically the only cookbook I don't already own.I was SHOCKED at how great it is.I expected simply a book of promotional recipes hocking his grill machines and written by staff writers--but then I read the introduction and wow!It never ocurred to me how influential his early travels as a boxer had been on his palate. The combinations of flavorings and grilled fruits are amazing, pulling fully on his travels through Africa and Asia. And honestly, most of the recipes can be made without the use of a grill or rotisserie' an oven, stovetop and/or broiler will do.Good job, George, write me another one!

2-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.
I found this book to be a sorry excuse for product advertisement.I own both the grill and rotisserie.I was hoping for recipes to help me learn how to use them. The rotisserie recipes were basically non-existant.I did not learn any thing from this book then what came with either the grill and/or rotisserie.Don't waste your money. Go to a good recipe exchange list and they will have what you need. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
This book gives detailed information on making and using a solar oven. It even tells you how to can tomatoes and fruit in a solar oven with success.

2-0 out of 5 stars Solar Cooking for Vegans
In searching for books on solar cooking, I am interested in recipes for omnivores.I have never purchased tofu or textured protein, and never will.I was very disappointed with this book; Ms. Kofalk stated that even though she isn't a vegan vegetarian herself, she wrote a vegan cookbook so as to not offend.Funny thing is, I am rather offended. This cookbook is of no use to me.
3-0 out of 5 stars Okay cookbook - ALL VEGETARIAN
The author notes "Because I am a vegetarian, all recipies are without meat, fish, or eggs."Many of the recipes call for "Bragg Liquid Aminos", which is a soybean-derived amino acid supplement.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
The new Paul Kirk book "Smoke It!" contains some good recipes, many of which stretch the boundaries that we normally associate with traditional barbecued foods. The text that accompanies each recipe is pure Paul Kirk, but the beautifully styled food photos seem oddly out of place. Anyone who's met Chef Paul knows he's a down-to-earth kind of guy, and it's hard to imagine him serving up this food in the settings portrayed in the photos. Despite this bit of cognitive dissonance, it's a good book, though not as useful as "Paul Kirk's Barbecues Sauces and Rubs". ... Read more

Editorial Review

In his jacket photo, ace grill chef Chris Schlesinger has the look of Howdy Doody with a stomach full of barbecue. It's a speechless kind of look. Schlesinger, however, is not a speechless kind of guy. Starting with the motto, "Brown food tastes better," Schlesinger and his writing partner, John Willoughby, show the reader exactly why that is. The ride lasts nearly 400 pages.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Trill of the Grill
If you are looking for insparation from a very competent Chef this may be the only grilling book you may every need. If you can't live with out your 1/4 teaspoon and devorce yourself from the resulty of your own hands maybe not. Chris is upfront about the use real wood and charcole. Gas fired grill can produce tasty consistant results but were is the sole? If you dare to risk the vagirese of live fireinexact time and ever changing food products come to the light and get rid of the Mc Grill and it's spawn Mc Food. Chris is a Grill God here on the Earth. As for all the other books he has writen well Chris is a sinner and of the flesh and learned that writing cook books is like printing your own money. Not the worst of sins. Buy the book get out your old Webber and start cooking keep cooking as time goes buy you will stop using resipes and just cook as you have learned. Come to the fire and cook my sisters and brothers

2-0 out of 5 stars A huge let down!
Admitedly, I am a big fan of Steve Raichlens' work, but I have read quite a number of other grilling/BBQ books, not to mention watching DVD's and such. This book was so hyped in many reviews, that I put it at the top of a new pile of 5 books on the subject to read, only to wonder what I missed! I agree with the review above that says it should be titled 'Carribean Grill'. Nothing wrong with that sort of flavor, just don't tout the book to be all grilling/BBQ inclusive. It's not! I only garnered a handful of recipes from the entire book. Borrow it before you buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Killer Grill Thrill
This is a terrific cookbook.Of my 100+ cookbooks, this rates in my top five, along with Paul Prudhomme, Julia Child, and Marcella Hazan. These recipes are innovative, easy to follow, and truly tasty. The dishes are fairly simple, they offer some fabulous menu planning, and there are great pictures. The night I got the book, I tried the blue cheese lamb kabobs on wilted greens, along with the grilled scallops on mango relish on some friends, and I killed.I have since killed again, and will kill often with Thrill of the Grill. ...
