3-0 out of 5 stars Not for those who want their food well-seasoned...
I'm disappointed in how bland the meat dishes are. As one reviewer said, increase your seasonings.I've also had to decrease the pressure cooking times on some because the meat would come out almost in shreds! There's also one recipe that surprised me - the short ribs that have to be cooked three times - first to brown, then pressure cooked twice, and then crusted and baked.Good grief!Doesn't all that defeat the supposed ease of using a pressure cooker?Overall, it's not a bad book; it's just not as good as I had hoped it would be.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little bland....
I bought this book because it was one of the books highly recommended in the pressure cooking internet group that I am in.The book is beautiful but kind of bland in taste. It goes to show that you can never judge a book on its cover.I was kind of disappointed with the purchase.I recommend any of Lorna Sass's books.I own all of her books and everything tastes just right and is pretty easy to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars good starter

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so exciting
if you are looking for helpful tips and everyday recipes. I was a little bit disappointed. Instead of full page pictures I would like to have found about spicing up steamed food generally. It will get a good place in my cookbook library but I doubt that I will use it much

5-0 out of 5 stars steam cuisine
Here are imaginative recipes that can be prepared with a minimum of fuss.Steaming is a quick way to prepare foods healthfully.I particularly like her fettucini primavera, where she boils the noodles in the bottom of thesteamer while steaming the vegetables on top! I'm looking forward to tryingthe garlic chicken with cucumber and grapes as well. Not only are theremany tempting recipes to try [also put together as suggested menus withtiming], the book also teaches one how to use the technique more creativelythan I thought was possible. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yum Yum!!
I recently ordered this book and have tried three recipes in one week. I do not exaggerate when I say this is some of the best food I have ever tasted. The book warns to use only a non-glazed cooker, but I have a Schlemmertopf, which is glazed, and the recipes cook perfectly. Five Stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Book for my Clay Pot
I gave the book 5 stars because that is what most people do and the book probably deserves 5 stars. I may never use the book because nowhere was it mentioned that it was only for unglazed pots. My pot has glazed bottom, so now I must search for a book on using glazed pots.I had hoped for information for adapting recipes for microwave, but there was none.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Time to Cook? Let the Claypot do all the work!
I purchased a Romertopf clay pot 5 years ago and bought this book soon after.Grover's Roast Chicken recipe was my first attempt and it was scrumptious!I steered clear of the recipes containing organs but I foundthat soups, stews and even breads turn out beautifully in the clay pot.Inow have 3 sizes and would advise the user to line the pot with parchmentpaper just to reduce the cleanup time. This book helps to demystify abasically simple cooking utensil and you will love the results.Food ispacked with flavor and moisture and you just have to sit by and wait toserve. It is a lifesaver for those of us who love a home-cooked meal butdon't have the time after a long day at work. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cookbook!
I love this cookbook. There is a great mix of traditional with a twist and new recipes. It is great if you want to expand on your cast iron cooking. Most cookbooks offer just the basics that most people who have any cooking experience already know how to fix.If you are looking for standard recipes for fried chicken, corn bread or biscuits and gravy only, you might not appreciate the span of this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, not exceptional
I absolutely adore cast iron and I have purchased a few books on the subject as well as experimenting on my own. I found most of therecipes in this book to be just fine but a little "out there" for your average chef with a big black pan and a pile of burning wood. "Souffleed Bittersweet Chocolate Omelet with Hot Fudge Sauce" and "Sauce Remoulade" are great and all, but where's the "Biscuits and Sausage Gravy?" In all fairness, there is a recipe for biscuits which I haven't tried yet. Overall there seems to be a plethora of recipes which are cute and interesting but likely won't be used very often and a there is a dearth of down-home cookin'. I liked "Cast Iron Cooking: from Johnnycakes to Blackened Redfish by A.D. Livingston" much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Intro, Good recipes, clearly written

5-0 out of 5 stars Burn Like A Pro
When I first bought a house in the Blue Ridge Mountains I found that (being built in 1810) the most efficient and economical way to heat it was with wood. So although I didn't buy this book for the cooking aspects (which proved nice anyway), it was INDISPENSABLE for a beginning wood-burner. You get the low down on maintenance, safety, and a host of other must-have information. Should be required reading with every wood burning stove/heater purchase. Two thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete guide!
We are building a house and I am considering using a wood cook stove outside on the patio, to be used during the summer months, when the inside electric stove would heat up the house, so I bought this book as an introduction to using one. Read more

This isn't a review, but a tip for those that wanted to get the book "Grilled to Perfection" by the host of Licence to Grill, Rob Rainford.Go to: www.amazon.caThis is amazons' Canadian website. That's what I did. Will post a review on here when I get it.Happy grilling:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Well rounded grilling guide
This is an excellent book to get, when you want to go to the next level of grilling.Reading it is a hoot, you can almost hear him talking his way through the book. What I really like is that this book is not just about grilling, but also includes lots of complimentary dishes that go well with it.Check out the last page for the pie, you will see what I mean.Still trying to balance out the timing on how to run two grills, but I'll get it down.Best part I really like is the added commentary on what dishes to serve together, great choices!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not by Robert Rainford!
I was looking for a cookbook by Robert Rainford the chef and host of the show License to Grill.Typing in his name pulled up this book. Me, silly person, did not pay attention to the other name listed.I figured Christopher Schlesinger was a co-author. Duh!Anyway, if you're looking for a book by Robert Rainford this is not it.Boy was my husband disappointed! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great recipes
I have found this book to have tremendous recipes, and most are low fat.Everything I have tried works to perfection. My only complaint, is the pan sizes are not real.Like many recipes call for an 81/2x81/2x4 one quart dish. There is no such dish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book for healthier slow cooking
For my fellow foodies that are thinking, "you have got to be kidding" please keep reading and keep an open mind.Even though my favorite cookbook is "The Professional Chef" by the CIA, I still use this one to assist me in determining timing and liquid proportions for making dinners without hovering around the kitchen.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to a slow cooker library.
I've enjoyed all the recipes I've made from this cookbook so far. One nice thing about this cookbook is that it has lots of recipes for wraps, which you won't find in most slow-cooker cookbooks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
Not only are the recipes completely unoriginal (dried onion soup mix pot roast, coke pot roast, dump a can of something on a pot roast), I was quite disappointed to find that most of them call for heavily processed ingredients like the aforementioned cans of condensed soup or packages of dried soup mix. Nor is there any particular effort to present nutritionally balanced meals or menus.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the working mom
I just got my first crock pot for x-mas this year and decided to stock up on crock pot cookbooks so I could put it to use while I'm at work. I haven't been disappointed with the recipes in this book so far. I especially like a chicken and wild rice stew that uses brown rice. My kids like the food, so I can't complain. This cookbook is definitely more old-fashioned American cooking rather than packed with dishes from other cultures and regions, but that was really what I wanted. Simple recipes that my kids won't frown at. For those who are looking for a book with recipes that take long enough so they can put in a full day's work and still make something in the crock, this book will satisfy your needs. Most recipes take at least 6 -8 hours on low and can usually be left to cook 1-2 hours extra without harm to the meal.

5-0 out of 5 stars A busy time-stressed homemaker's best friend in the kitchen
The slow cooker or crockpot is a busy time-stressed homemaker's best friend in the kitchen. Get up in the morning, put in the ingredients, turn on the heat, the walk away for the rest of the day until dinner time. Now even the most health conscious kitchen cook can take full advantage of the crockpot with the more than two hundred slow-cooker recipes comprising the new Better Homes and Gardens' Slow Cooker Favorites Made Healthy. From Five-Spice Chicken Wings; Slow-Cooked Beef Fajitas; Dijon Pork Chops; and Ginger-Tomato Chicken; to Pasta with Eggplant Sauce; Asian Turkey and Rice Soup; Mushroom Steak Diane Stew; and Savory Bread Pudding, the recipes are clearly laid out with ingredient lists, prep and cooking time estimates, number of servings, cooking directions, and even Slow Cooker Size. A very highly recommended addition to family kitchen cookbook collections, Slow Cooker Favorites Made Healthy comes with an exceptionally useful bonus chapter of outstanding recipes for small families using a one and one-half quart sized slow cooker.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Pressure Cooker Cookbook out there
I don't even put this away anymore, because I use it almost every day.At your fingertips will be a wealth of quick, delicious and healthy recipes. This book is a working woman's dream come true.

3-0 out of 5 stars Second Chance
Thought I wouldn't be getting much use out of this book but after reading these rave reviews decided to give it a second look. I tried several recipes but found them to be very salty especially the Black Bean Soup.Same for the Greek Lamb & Bean Stew as well as Italian Country Lamb & Whiite Bean Stew. Guess I will have to try some of the recommendations here. I was getting ready to purchase yet another PC cookbook as great method of cooking so will put that on hold and give this book a second chance. Hope all turns out as well as expected!

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive and well-written, but too fancy for me
This is a cookbook for people that REALLY know how to cook -- I can handle pretty much anything in the kitchen and get dinner on the table on time but these are challenging recipes for me, and many of them are just too fancy to attempt. I've got two little kids to feed, not a few gourmet food type friends I'm making dinner for.
5-0 out of 5 stars the best crock pot cook book
I have never written a review before but just saw that this book (which I am buying for my mum and friends for Christmas) was only rated 3 stars and I couldn't understand why. As far as I am concerned this is the best crock pot cook book out there - the recipes are simple to follow, always turn out exactly as shown and are delicious. The sole recipe I have served at several dinner parties to much acclaim as with the 'lamb you can eat with a spoon'. I cannot recommend this book more highly and I looked at several crock pot cookbooks that were really boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Clever - and Very Fun! - Book.
I recently saw the author interviewed on "Unwrapped", and knew I had to have this book.Yep, I was one of those who always wanted - but never got - an Easy-Bake Oven! The book is a blast. The trivia and facts are interesting, and I especially loved reading the chefs recollections of their first experiences cooking with one. Some of the recipes are quite complex (I'm not sure I'd even be capable of trying them in a regular oven!) but that's all part of the fun.Would love to see a show like this on TV, where chefs compete to create gourmet dishes using a not so gourmet (but hugely popular) item.Anyone at Food Network listening?!?

3-0 out of 5 stars Eat a cute peeping quail yes! for children no...
Well I will have a blast with this book but my daughter asked me mommy whats a quail? I knew we were a bit out of our range with this book with the first recipe in being roasted hot mexican peppers. I was dissapointed that there was no recipe for pretzels, I remember making those as a kid? They needed more kid friendly feasts. We loved the old school photos in the book, history and the photo essay of changes through the ages with the oven.
4-0 out of 5 stars Better for adults than for kids
Having fond memories of my sister's Easy-Bake oven and being a fan of cooking shows, I enjoyed thumbing through the Easy-Bake Oven Gourmet. Being rather practical, I was glad that "Warm Memories" recipes from past Easy-Bake oven cookbooks were included; my kids and I are more likely to try those than the more complicated recipes created by the well-known chefs.I'd agree with an earlier reviewer that Kristen Joyal's Baking with Mommy Cookbook is a better choice for families who want delicious kid-sized oven recipes that are kid-friendly in terms of ease and taste. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better bread machine books
I love hot, freshly baked bread, but I seldom have the time for kneading, proofing, and all the rest, so several years ago I acquired a bread machine. Last Christmas, someone decided I needed to expand my baking repertoire and gave me this book. It starts with the real basics -- white bread, egg bread, whole wheat, rye -- and works up to more complex recipes like "Maple-Pecan Cornmeal Bread" and "Roasted Garlic and Stout Bread" (made with dark beer). Many of them use the machine for only part of the process and still require you to punch down, etc -- and, frankly, I got a machine so I wouldn't have to do that stuff! Nevertheless, there are some really good machine-only recipes, especially "Pepper-Parmesan Sourdough," "Poppy Seed-Cranberry Bread," which is great for brakfast, and "Garlic and Dried Tomato Bread," which is perfect with homemade minestrone. The instructions are easy and assorted helpful tips are scattered throughout.

3-0 out of 5 stars Smoking the Smoot
This book on the history of smoking is not only an articulate guide which dispenses with the "silly" notion of cancer, but it involves the reader on a sojourn that is out of this world. Explore ancient smoking history, ranging from Chinese opium pipes in the 800 AD era to a more refined place called Paris where tobacco was shipped in X-Ray tubes to keep freshness.Comes with free lighter fluid and a carton of cigs.

I really like this cookbook. If you are new to indoor smoking and using the stovetop smoker, it is a very useful guide that covers tips on using the smoker, pairing woodchips with a variety of foods, and plenty of tasty recipes. It also includes the author's personal experiences with using the smoker. This is a definite plus that shows up in the recipes and indicates that the author is familiar with them and didn't just collect a bunch of untried recipes to fill up the book. One comment that caught my attention was the turkey wings, the author mentions that he doesn't smoke them to eat as a main dish because they can be tough.I used to bake turkey wings portions in the oven at a low temperature and they always turned out great. Now I smoke them first and then finish them in the oven. Now they are even better! I soak them in a brine overnight:
