5-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid Stevia recipe collection
After all the positive things I had heard about Stevia, I decided to give it a whirl.Coming by good Stevia recipes is quite difficult ... perhaps because many people don't know about it and/or because it doesn't taste exactly like sugar.I have tried several recipes out of this cookbook, and I haven't liked all of them.So why am I giving it 5 stars?Because it beats the competition. Also, I think that if you have never had Stevia before it takes awhile to acquire a taste for it.The recipes that I liked the most were ones that had another "sweet" ingredient in it to help dampen the bitterness of the Stevia. For example, I love the Carob Chip Cookies, Carob Brownies, the fruit sauces and the oatmeal banana bread.I did not like the coconut peanut butter cookies or the lemon pudding. If you try a recipe and do not like it, don't give up!Move onto the next one and try again!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one to buy
I've tried several of the stevia cookbooks that Amazon carries and this is the one.The recipes use whole-grain, healthful ingredients - so you end up with food that's not just sugar-free but overall good for you. They taste great and are easy to adapt and tweak. We make muffins based on his banana bread every week. Also this author skips the evangelizing, etc that most of the other books are padded with - just "here's a natural sweetener and how to use it."Really excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The recipes are yummy!
My favorite recipe is the stevia fruit gluk. It is delicious and easy to cook. The apple pie is also terrific. Most of the recipes taste better than sugar recipes, because stevia tastes so good. I would recommend that youbuy a copy, then another 5 copies for your friends. Read more

I love this book. The recipes are simple and easy to prepare. The author explains the thinking behind everything and also tells you how recipes can be easily adapted. The produce and ingredients are for the most part readily available and it is so comprehensive. 5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, healthy, delicious, fast and economical recipes!
I am not a vegetarian, but I like to make vegetarian dishes for health and economical reasons. I also find the pressure cooker to be a wonderful time-saver. I already owned two of Sass' PC cookbooks when I bought this one, and this is the best one yet! Sass opened my eyes to easy, quick and creative vegetarian cooking. Except for a handful of exotic dishes, the recipes use regular every-day fresh ingredients, and in interesting (and delicious!) combinations. If you think meatless cooking is just tofu and seaweed, buy this book!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this cookbook
This is a great cookbook. Have tried 2 recipes, one for black beans and one for a squash rice risotto. Both were simple and delicious. Can't wait to try some more, they all sound so good.

2-0 out of 5 stars January 2005 - Better resources now available !
This book is light reading and lacks knowledge sharing of glycemic foods.I was not looking for a Dr.'s book on food and recipes but this book was not fullfilling for me.It encourages the use of the 'bad' fats.It does encourage low glycemic foods and low sugar foods. What I am trying to share is that I bought two books at the same time, the other by "GALLOP"- Living the G.I. Diet, and found this one to be greatly lacking by comparison.
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific asset to your cookbook collection!
My husband started on SugarBusters almost a year ago, after my boss lost 50 lbs on it. We bought the SugarBusters book and also the cookbook. Never used any of the recipes in either. Instead, I was cooking only a meat and several veggies for each meal, and we were getting a little burned out. THEN, we found this in a bookstore! Everything we've tried has been terrific, not to mention easy. Hubby has lost 55lbs, thanks to SugarBusters and regular exercise. We're eating better tasting food than we ever have, and it is healthy, to boot! The shopping guide is extremely helpful and more comprehensive than the one put out by SugarBusters. I have since given at least 5 copies of this as gifts, along with Sugar Bust for Life Part II.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy one-dish meals
Collaboratively compiled by Ellen and Theodore Breenan, Sugar Bust for Life!: Cookbook And Companion Guide is a collection specifically for those concerned with weight loss, energy levels, diabetes and cholesterol control, and wanting an easy, healthful, culinary lifestyle. Also very highly recommended is the companion cookbook by Ellen and Theodore Breenan, Sugar Bust For Life! 5-0 out of 5 stars the bible on GF cooking
This is the bible when it comes to baking gluten-free. Long ago, before the Internet was publicly available, people had to find information anyway they could on living GF and coeliac disease. When this book was first published in the early to mid-1990s, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Before this book, I had a few recipes from the Celiac Society of America (CSA) and the Gluten-Intolerance Group (GIG), and a couple of really bad cookbooks from the UK (which usually relied on GF flour (wheat flour with the gluten washed) that wasn't readily available in the US and didn't bake all that well. The recipes in all of Bette Hagman's books are great -- staples that you longed for. Lentil chocolate cake -- even the non-coeliacs will want some!

5-0 out of 5 stars The original and still the most comprehensive
I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) Bette Hagman's books are the first couple of books that I got, and they're pretty good. *GFG-Revised* is a really great book with a lot of the staples that you need in there. The initial couple of chapters about what you can and can't eat are worth the price of the book (sure, you can't have wheat, rye, or barley, but how about quinoa, teff, spelt, or millet?) (Answers: yes, yes, no, yes.) but the recipes are what you should buy it for. The "Revised" edition has been updated with the new "four bean flour" blend.
3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but not exactly "gourmet"...
I was disappointed in this book.I guess I expected more than meatloaf, cheese balls, tuna casserole and beef stroganoff...

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date
This book was probably very important when it was published in 1992.But more than 10 years have passed, and the book is out of date.First, I find it suspicious that the authors blame hypoglycemia for 60 different symptoms. They take a "victim" attitude that everything unlikable in one's personality and habits can be blamed on one's hypoglycemia.I hardly find that to be the case in my own life.My bad temper is mine to conquer and not the "fault" of my hypoglycemia.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best treatment for Hypoglycemia
What an excellent book.Shame on me for not writing this review until now.I have been following the book since 2003 and it has changed my life dramatically.I can think and act very clearly and all my symptoms disappeared.Watch out, if you deviate from the program after starting it, symptoms will worsen.A must read for people with low blood sugar problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide I've found yet!
I found I suffered from 49 of the 60 symptoms of LBS just in the last week.I've had this book since I was 6 months pregnant in 1996 and found out I had LBS, but never took the time to read it; until this last week while I was too sick to get out of bed.

This is a must have for EVERY vegetarian. Very helpful and important information on food & what it does to your body. If everyone ate this way America would be skinny, healthy and in-sync with nature. If you find yourself gaining weight on a vegetarian diet, this book is for you. Following the guidelines, you will find you do not miss what you no longer eat and that you can eat rich, flavorful and filling foods without the weight-gain. You will actually need to eat more to keep from getting too slim.

I'm so glad that I stumbled upon this book. It's a great source of recipe ideas. With this and the low-iodine cookbook on the Thyca website, I have been eating pretty well. The noodle bake and the cabbage rolls are excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for thyroid cancer patients!
This book is a true blessing for thyroid cancer patients preparing for radioactive iodine treatments. It provides information and recipes that make it so much easier to live with the low iodine diet. The recipes are tasty, simple and most of all delicious. It's wonderful to have such a great guidebook to show you how to live with this very restrictive diet that patients must go through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky but great
Kafka is opinionated and I don't always agree with her. (For instance, she hates dilly beans, thinks lambs quarters are far inferior to spinach, and loves ramps). But, I don't mind that - the world would be boring if we all agreed all the time. This is a fun cookbook with imaginative, good, and easy to prepare recipes, and I use it regularly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cookbook - Essential for any kitchen
Barbara Kafka's _Vegetable Love_ is one of the best cookbooks that I have ever purchased. I have made some twenty recipes (of the 700+), and every single one has turned out delicious.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for vegetarians
First of all, in spite of the title, this is not a book filled with almost religious zeal on vegetarian cooking. Instead it is a book on vegetables. It's all about vegetables. And beyond vegetables there are some other things like avocados, which she thinks is technically a fruit rather than a vegetable. And she has some recipes on some unusual vegetables like hominy, well, perhaps not unusual, but not often seen in mainstream cookbooks. And how about a discussion on amaranth or burdock, maybe that's part of your standard diet, but my mother never cooked either one of them.

I was invited over to a fellow Celiac's house and bless her heart, she'd made three different varieties of gluten free baked goods.By far and away the BEST was the coffee cake recipe from this cook book.I tried not to make a pig of myself, but it was so good!It was light and fluffy [not gritty and dense like most GF breads and cakes].I think I ate half all by myself!I'm not ashamed.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Repetition, bad advice, unsound science
If ever a book cried out for a managerial editor and a science advisor, this is it. The book repeats the same exclamation in one recipe after another (soy protein, not soy flour!), andyes, the exclamation mark was included every time. Many recipes call for lard or ground pork rinds...It turns out the writer mistakenly thought that liquid oils contained trans fats, so she substituted saturated fats. Unbelievable.

If there were only one cookbook in my kitchen, this would be the one!Now I can cook in a manner that allows me to stick to my low carb lifestyle while my husband and kids enjoy every bite as well. After many successful (and repeat) recipes, four of my friends/ family members have purchased the book. You will not miss the sugar or the carbs in any of these amazing recipes. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It's not as complicated as Sears wants you to believe
Sears wants you to think he has come up with a complicated system which he calls The Zone.
1-0 out of 5 stars More figuring out if you're female
The Zone is a great diet if you have good recipes (not many in here) and if it has the proportions that you need for your personal meal. I've gotten a few good ones out of "What to Eat in the Zone". There are two different weekly menus - for women and for men. Not so in this book. It is based entirely on men. If you are a woman, you have to figure it out for yourself how much to cut down on the ingredients. Some things are obvious - if it calls for 4 oz of meat, you go to 3 oz. But the rest of the recipe is too difficult to figure out. Some people say the Zone is complicated enough as it is, and this book doesn't make a case against that, unless, of course, you are a man.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough edible recipes
This book was good in that I could skim through 3 short chapters and understand the Zone concept completely. It's really all I needed to know to get going. Also, the quick list of food blocks in the back was great. However, the recipes are gross.I have never seen so much cabbage in a cookbook.Just gross. The Formula has better recipes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Controlling your own health
I loved reading this book because it was packed with information on the foods we love. More than 9,000 scientific studies have proven beyond doubt that food is our best medicine. This book shows which foods are the most healing. In nature animals know which foods to nibble on to get well, with this book...we will too! I think the best way to use this book is to completely read it cover to cover and write down every food you think you need. Then, try to incorporate those foods into your diet. Studies have identified 107 of the most powerful healing foods, spices and herbs. There are some compounds which just cannot be absorbed by the human bloodsteam unless they are eaten in a food.
5-0 out of 5 stars I never knew that about food.....
This book is great, from a-z it goes through a multitude of diseases and disorders and how to best combat them with food. It's layed out nicely and easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Inspiring & Entertaining!
I bought this book for a friend with cancer and after reading the preface and first chapter just couldn't put it down! Verne Varona writes with an amazing clarity, insight and entertaining style while demystifing all kinds of nutritional myths. His information about acid and alkaline is the best I've read anywhere and his sugar craving information has allowed me to challenge what was a formidable addiction. It seems like he's taken the best of numerous cultural medicines and combined them into a practical and refreshing melting pot approach. Best of all, after five weeks on this program I feel better than I have in 30 years! I have as much kitchen savvy as kangeroo, but his recipes are easy-to-follow and absolutely delicious. Whether you have cancer, concerned about cancer or just in search ofgood health, this highly motivating book is a must read for anyone wanting to improve or recover their health. That's my take!5-0 out of 5 stars Well Researched and thought out
Loaded with the latest Research and many years of practical experience, made this book such a beleivable read, a book I can reference and read over and over again, I specifically used a pink highlighter to zoom in on all the important points, which runs rampant without the whole book. If you are a person who wants valid, clear information on how to take care of yourself for the rest of your life whether you have cancer or not, this is the book for you, I healed my cancer fifteen years ago using these principles and there never outdated, like so many diet trends out there!! this is a keeper. Thank you for your hard work, in putting the book together. L.K. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sly at 60 -- Awe Inspiring!
My wife and I tried Body for Life six years ago.Although we had tremendous results, the rigidity of the program was too much to keep up with over a prolonged period of time.Sly Moves explains how to more practically maintain a superb physique without having to overwork, journal, starve, and become all-consumed.For me, Stallone's book is truly inspirational.Sly describes how he trained for each of his Rocky and Rambo movies, the nutritional and exercise mistakes he made along the way, and what he learned REALLY worked to maintain a well-defined and healthy body after 30 years of experimenting. In ten weeks I'm down 40 lbs., back to my old BFL shape, but this time larger and leaner.People have asked "How?" at work, as the book makes its round through the office.I'm 50, and genuinely believe will possess the fitness level Sly has today at 60 when I reach that milestone.Stallone has proven that it CAN be done, and I can't thank him enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical & Motivating
Being a Stallone fan, I wanted to enjoy this book. Being an athlete, I did not expect to learn much. In fact, being a cynic I expected an elaborate INSTONE advertisement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals, plus
Very good book for people looking to enhance their kitchen creativity. Unlike some of the competition, this does not have a lot of weird ingredients you need to struggle to find -- it's chock full of enjoyable and easy recipes, and can help you to find vegan possibilities for nearly any meal. Highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars love love LOVE!
Love this book, love Sarah and Tanya, love the recipes, love the humor, the creativity, the nice balance of easy recipes and fancier dishes.. I have nothing but love for these gals!I eat the banana pancakes all the time, have tried several of the breads with great results, and the lasagna is awesome!I served it to non-vegans and everyone raved.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for new vegans
For the price, this book is pretty good for new vegans. It contains a lot of interesting and useful information and some very good recipes. However, I've not had the best luck with all the recipes I tried. For example, the, "Light Apple Bran Muffins," recipe stated, "Makes six muffins." I'm pretty sure I followed the recipe correctly, yet I had enough batter for 12 big muffins; and I had to adjust the baking time. I've also had to make adjustments on other recipes I tried. Even so; the recipes are easy to follow, and for the most part, they are pretty good. The index can be dificult to use. Overall, this book is helpful if you're just starting to embrace a vegan lifestyle. You might want to check it out of your local library and try it out before buying it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Hepatitis C Cookbook
This author puts extreme stress on food being of organic origins, and reducing intake of red meats.Unfortunately she loads recipes with whole milk, cream and butter. The butterfat in these products are is unhealthful as eating meat fat. They should be limited in all diets, but especially in foods prepared for people with liver damage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook!
This is an excellent cookbook.Meals are healthy versions of homecooked food from the main regions of the U.S.I have already cooked several recipes and my family has loved them all.I have served dinner guests with "untested in my kitchen" recipes. The meal was great!Tonight I am using a fish recipe. Can't wait to taste. With cooking like this, dieting and eating healthy is quick and easy.

2-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing
I have recently bought eight (!) Weight Watchers cookbooks from Amazon, and this is the first one I have been disappointed with. I have found it easy to buy or substitute ingredients called for in the other books, but less so with this one (elk steaks, anyone?) OK, it is an "All-American" cookbook, so perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. But this is a word of warning for would-be purchasers living outside the States. And it's puzzling that a few of the recipes call for vegetable shortening (copha). The last time I checked, this was a very unhealthy saturated fat, and definitely not recommend for anyone who is weight - or health - conscious. But my biggest gripe is that the few recipes I have tried so far have been bland or pretty ordinary - which has cetainly not been the case for the other Weight Watchers c
