5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy and Logical Weight Loss Program
I had previuosly purchased "The Schwarzbein Principle" which was extremely informative regarding nutrition and the human body. I found the cookbook to be a valuable addition to the information previously presented. The recipes and food selections are easy to prepare and satisfying. It is the best cookbook in my possesion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seller Highly Recommended!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Fit
I have been on a moderate carb diet for a few years and was experimenting with recipes that would fit with my exchange diet and carb counting.Splenda had been on the market for only a year and few people knew how to cook with it and gain good results.Enter Marlene Koch into my life. Her recipes from this book were just what the doctor ordered. There is just enough sugar to make the textures in the food work, but the carb count and fat content was "a perfect fit" for my diet needs. Not only that, but every recipe I tried tasted fantastic and this book has allowed me to return classic recipes such as three bean salad, coleslaw, gingerbread and "sugar" cookies back into my diet without guilt or ill effects.I've made many of the recipes in this book and make her "Heavenly Cheesecake" for my holiday table each year.
5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook
I have tried many receipes from this book, and there is only only one that I won't make again. Not only are the receipes in the book excellant, but I have used the book as a resource for changing other receipes to use Splenda. I have also modified some of the book's receipes to use more whole grains with good results. We like the fact that not only do the receipes use Splenda, but they are also low in fat.My only complaint is that the book does not show the number of grams of sugar, as we don't use the Diabetic exchange method, but use the food index and load information.I also have her prior book "Unbelievable Desserts with Splenda" which does give the sugar grams with the carbohydrate grams. However, I like this book better because it provides receipes for a wider variety of foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic recipes deliver tasty but healthy treats
I received "Fantastic Food with Splenda" as a gift, and what a treat! While you could confidently serve these recipes for company, this is a cookbook you'll use everyday, not just when cooking for special occasions. Author Marlene Koch's dedication and nutritional expertise show through in the well-crafted introductory chapters where she shares solid information on ingredients, techniques and dietary issues as well as in the balanced selection of recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars I CAN EAT DESSERTS AGAIN!!!
This is a great cookbook and I've been pleased with the recipes I've tried so far.The desserts are excellent and we've had a lot of fun trying them out.Best of all, they are guilt-free!I watch my calorie count every day and many of the desserts are only 100-200 calories.I am looking forward to trying out several of the mixed drink recipes, too. This is a cookbook that covers all types of foods from appetizers to desserts and is a great way to eat healthier.I love that the nutritional information is listed for each recipes, as well as helpful notes for many of them.I wish there were pictures instead of illustrations, but other than that, it's a great addition to my cookbook collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only cookbook you'll ever need. It's that good!
I bought this book because I was looking for recipes using Splenda, and were low in sugar, fat and calories as my husband is a newly diagnosed diabetic. I tried the Banana Muffins recipe first, fully expecting them to taste like "diet food." Wow! Was I ever surprised!I liked the muffins so much, I made them for friends and family who loved them so much they begged me to make more.My husband raved about the Banana Muffins to his doctor who promptly rushed out to buy the book for himself! The books gives analysis per serving info (the main reason I initially bought the book) and the recipes are incredibly easy to follow and taste yummy. We both have hope because of this book that we can eat a variety of healthy, tasty food. This cookbook is the only one I have in my kitchen now.God Bless Marlene Koch for this wonderful book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I suffer from both RA and Ankylosing Spondolitis.I found out through this program that I cannot eat wheat, milk or dairy products, eggs, sugar or coffee. When I'm good at sticking to it, I'm almost in complete remission. When I cheat, I pay for it. Within 20 minutes of consuming one of the above items, my fingers begin to swell and get stiff, and by the next morning I'm in a lot of pain. I have been able to stop taking the Methatrexate and Lodin which were very hard on the liver and destroyed my immune system. This is a really great program and it works if you have the discipline and self motivation to go through it and stick it out. If you are completely lazy and looking for an easy fix, this may not be for you. It's hard!It has been hard for me to give up coffee, Lucky Charms for breakfast, hot chocolate, cookies and some other comfort foods. But in the end I have a lot of new favorites, my inflamation and pain have disappeared, I've lost weight and my skin looks fabulous to boot. God bless Barbara Allan! She's an angel.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Everyone
Maybe i'm being shortshighted, but i feel as if the many concessions i already have to make with this disease are hard enough to incorporate into my daily life, without also including such intense dietary changes.I work full-time, including travel and client entertainment making it very difficult to always control every morsel i consume.also, don't share the author's background and early diagnosis symptoms.Mine are coming more slowly and i am entrusting my treatment and long-term care to my Rheumy.Sort of wish I had spent the money on a good yoga or meditation tape instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for People with Chronic Health Problems
There are a number of books about Food Intolerances that are invaluable to people who have chronic health problems without knowing the cause of their problems.Since physicians are often ignorant in the area of Type III or Delayed Onset Food Intolerance, these books are often the only hope for people to regain their good health and in many cases their lives.Barbara Allen in her book Conquering Arthritis contributes detailed information to the topic that I have not seen in any other book. Her own story is inspiring and her systematic approach to solving her personal health crisis mystery is a blueprint for others to find their personal way back to good health. To her credit she did not only fight and win her own battle with ignorance, pain and deteriorating health but had the drive and compassion to get the message out there to help all of us with her excellent research and conclusions.I was diagnosed with IBS and Fibromyalgia and Arthritis and Insomnia and Chronic Fatigue and CTS and was offered lots of prescription drugs, some of which I took for a while, but nothing helped like avoiding the foods to which I am allergic.Barbara Allen made me aware of hidden additives in foods and vitamins that I needed to stop eating but that I would not have suspected. Thanks for sharing, Barbara Allen!!! ... Editorial Review

This 25th-anniversary edition of the classic, bestselling cookbook contains 600 heart-healthy recipes, 150 of them brand-new. The book has been updated to reflect the use of nonfat and low-fat ingredients that didn't exist just a few years ago. Recipes include appetizers, snacks, beverages, soups, salads, entrées (seafood, poultry, meat, vegetarian), vegetables, side dishes, sauces, breads, breakfasts, and, of course, desserts. Many are healthier versions of old favorites--such as Eggplant Parmesan, Chicken à la King, Sweet and Sour Pork, Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, Devil's Food Cake, and Chocolate Chip Cookies--with some new entries that reflect modern eating trends, like Portobello Mushroom Wrap with Yogurt Curry Sauce, Pad Thai, Curried Quinoa Salad with Cranberries and Almonds, and Artichoke and Chick-Pea Pilaf. Whether you want a quick meal, a nutritious dinner the whole family will enjoy, or a festive entrée to impress guests, this book has an array of choices.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars it works
my doctor put me on Actose in January of 2006 and by June, my blood sugar was still out of control and my weight was 306 lbs.I read about this while researching on the web and thought i would give it a try. From July 18 to Sept 15 I have lost 34 lbs. My blood sugar stays below 100 even after meals, and I have more energy than i have had in 20 years.Read this book and stick to it like your life depends on it, and it WILL work.

I was upset with the book.My mistake, but was unaware he has and is writing this book as a man with type 1 diabetes.I am just learning about the disease since being diagnosed, but am type 2 and there is a world of differnce between the both of them.It scared me and I put the book down and will not read any more of it.I got other books that are helping me adjust to this illness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Follow-on to Diabetes Solution

3-0 out of 5 stars would not be 1st choice
Be careful if you take this book into the kitchen. It is printed on the cheapest of papers and tears and damages easily if it gets wet. The recipes are o.k.; the information is o.k., although conflicts with some information in her Coconut Diet book, but nothing very interesting or inspirational is shared.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Information
I bought this book to add juice to my diet as well as for a juice fast to detox. However, this book is missing important information on this topic. This book is very helpful for ADDING more juice to your diet, but it doesn't cover the necessary information on a strict juice diet commonly used for cleansing (detoxing), illness, and weight loss.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative...well laid out & easy to read
This book is EXCELLENT and one which I highly recommend. Yes...it's from 1992 but it all still stands true. The one thing about eating this type of food/juice and eating this way in general is that the underlying benefits and facts don't change. It certainly is not a fad but based on principles that stand the test of time. You can buy a book on this subject that is 50 years old or one that is brand new...they will say pretty much the same thing. This book is very well laid out tho' and is packed with a wealth of information. It points out the benefits of juicing and what each vegetable and fruit is good for...and how to drink them, along with some excellent recipes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Betty Crocker is on the health bandwagon. Not one for fads, Betty sensibly bases this 175-recipe cookbook on the Food Guide Pyramid guidelines recommended by the American Heart Association and many other medical and nutrition professional organizations. You learn tips for cutting down on fat and cholesterol, understanding the different kinds of fat, and making smart food choices for heart health. The idea is to reduce fat by making ingredient substitutions and small alterations, but not making drastic changes. The recipes are varied and creative and don't resemble "diet food": Ginger Shrimp Kabobs, Vegetable Potstickers, Stuffed Veal Chops with Cider Sauce, Vegetable and Ham Jambalaya, Curried Chicken and Nectarines, Caribbean Fish Salad, and Thai Shrimp and Rice Noodle Nests. The desserts include Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake with Raspberry Topping (only 20 percent fat!), Blueberry-Lime Torte (about 15 percent fat), and Double Chocolate-Date Cake (about 25 percent fat). Recipes are labeled with symbols indicating "low-calorie," "low-fat," "moderate-fat," "low-cholesterol," and "moderate-cholesterol," so you can choose how far you want to go. Each recipe has a hefty amount of nutritional information: calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, fiber, protein, vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, and diet exchanges. Cooks who love knowing what the dishes should look like will enjoy the 45 mouth-watering color photos. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Reference Book of Flavors
The reason why I continuously return to this cookbook is because it is what I would describe as the cooking equivalent of a paintbox.Yes, you can follow madison's recipes exactly and come up with a delicious final dish, but what this book is truly commendable for is that it is so full of ideas.I have heard someone knock the simplicity of some of these recipes but that is the beauty of this book--it's focus on strong straightforward flavors that will go well together.Whenever I find myself with a bunch of spinach in the fridge or a cabinet empty of anything but a few cans of chickpeas, I flip through this book and inevitably get reminded that with my trusty spice rack, I can whip up something quick and healthy that also has complex flavors.I use the recipes as inspiration or guideline and rarely follow them exactly. As a recent fish convert and a person who inevitably ends up cooking meat for family, I also find that any moderately experienced cook would be able to easily modify these recipes to create carniverous dishes.A must-have cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Wholesome & Relatively Easy Fare
I'm a twenty-year-old committed vegetarian, and over the past year or so I've become very interested in cooking as a creative activity, rather than just another task. Deborah Madison's recipies in this cookbook are, on the whole, very simple and filled with flavor. I think of it kind of like a Joy of Cooking, but for vegetarians, because she has so much information on basic cooking how-to's, which is immensely useful if you haven't spent a lot of time in the kitchen yet.Her recipies usually start from basic vegetables you can find at a grocery store or farmer's market, so if you're interested in trying new foods (but don't know where to start), this is perfect for you. There are some illustrations and photos of what the vegetables and dishes look like, plus handy lists of how to buy, store, and prepare various vegetables. I highly recommend this book, and think it should be a staple on any serious vegetarian's bookshelf. Delicious!

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPER Comprehensive
This cookbook is kind of like "The Joy of Cooking" for vegetarians. It has an amazing comprehensive section on different kinds of vegetables.I really like that it actually lists recipes by vegetables so that you can try to find a recipe with what's on sale at the store, or just try one of those "weird" vegetables that seemed too intimidating before. My only criticisms of the book is that it doesn't offer a lot of good lower fat substitutes in recipes (there's a lot of fattening stuff in here!), and somehow, it feels like it's missing some of the creativity normally found in vegetarian cookbooks.Don't be fooled by the bland recipe titles, every single recipe I've made has tasted and LOOKED amazing. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars not for me
I was hoping for something with easy recipes that the whole family could enjoy together, but this is not it. A lot of the recipes are really unsuited for babies, and they instead give "baby" versions at the end that consist of reserving one of the ingredients (e.g., brown rice) and pureeing it plain--not exactly nutritious. (These are often followed by "children's" versions that necessitate picking out selected ingredients that may--or may not--appeal to kids.) There are too many grain-based recipes for my taste (deep-fried millet croquettes...red bean quinoa chili) and a lot of nuts (bad for babies), sea vegetables and permutations of soy (tofu, tempeh, tamari) which I personally am not interested in serving due to all the recent scrutiny of soy products as hormone disruptors (also a possible allergen for babies). It is really sort of an Asian-inspired/macrobiotic vegetarian cookbook (Tempeh Bacon is one of the recipes). "Whole Foods," in my mind, should feature fresh, minimally processed, natural, localized ingredients, but this seems to require endless trips to the health food store to purchase products such as seitan and kudzu. There is a lot of great nutritional information at the beginning of the book discussing babies and breastfeeding mothers, and some seemingly good sugar-free desserts, but I am sort of disappointed that the majority of the recipes are not palatable for the whole family (or easily modifed so that older babies can enjoy what everyone else gets).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive
"Feeding the Whole Family" by Cynthia Lair really is for the WHOLE family - and that includes infants and young children. Lair, a certified Health and Nutrition Counselor, devotes a whole chapter on starting your baby on solid foods. From there, she gives practical tips and advice on how to attract your children to healthy food. Lair also discusses the importance of whole, organic foods and well-balanced meals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy for Your Lactobacilli
In the foreword by Annemarie Colbin, CHES, of The Natural Gourmet Cookery School in NYC, there is the suggestion that shifts in customs around eating have contributed to the breakdown of our society, "could it be that by our dietary customs- consumption of unnatural foods and large amounts of meat and milk from animals raised on antibiotics and hormones-we are building a new kind of human being, one that has little connection with the healthier ways of the past?"I'd have to say... No.I don't see that as being a simple cause and effect, but I'm with her in spirit.I'd see both our diets and our lifestyles as being downstream effects of animals living in a very different kind of environment than the one we spent the overwhelming majority of our species-span evolving in.It doesn't matter whether she overstates the case or not, the bottom-line is still correct, we are Paleolithic hominids with Paleolithic-tuned bodies stranded without our tribes, alone in our urban institutions.By finding ways to recreate customs that resonate with a deeper part of our evolutionary past, we stand to not only enrich our lives but also improve our physical and mental health.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for every family
I consider this book the bible when it comes to feeding my son. I started using it since he was 5 months old, and I loved the results! I never fed him from a jar, everything he ate was prepared by me and as a result, he has a great appetite and he enjoys all kinds of foods (even those other kids consider "yucky"). He's 2 and a half now, and he loves such foods as bell peppers, olives, fish, onions, spinach and zucchini. His favorite dessert is fresh fruit. Needless to say, he's really healthy. I also have a 4-month-old baby and I plan to use the recipes again. This book should be mandatory for every new mom! If I could give it 6 stars, I definitely would.

5-0 out of 5 stars First recipe a success!!!
My little one just gobbled up the first recipe I made from this book and I felt so good knowing she ate a wholesome homemade meal. I know exactly what was put into it, I controlled the seasoning and she just loved it!!! I also recommend Favorite Family Meals by Annabel Karmel as well for meals for the whole family. My family is eating so much healthier now thanks to Annabel's amazing cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
This book was excellent for our child from her pre weaning until toddler years. With just a little time in the kitchen, we were able to make some yummy recipes that saved us money and frustration. I especially like the toddler recipes because we found they could be used for the whole family. I have made about 30 recipes from this book so far and not one has taken me over one hour to make (unless you count marinading time on some of them). Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Real science, not junk science
I joined Weight Watchers 11 weeks ago. I've lost 47 pounds to date, and couldn't be more pleased. I saw this book on their web site and ordered it because I am really getting into the science of weight loss. This book takes on and refutes a number of myths. They're actually quite fair, acknowledging the bits of truth embedded in each before presenting the larger truth. It's done in a very sound, calm manner, without being boring or pedantic. And there's true science behind all of it, not the junk science of the South Beach Diet for example. I even had one of my own beliefs refuted, the supposed metabolic after-glow from aerobic exercise. The only problem is there are Weight Watchers testimonials inserted every few pages, interfering with the flow. But at this price, I'm not going to complain further.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good weightloss book
The price is right and the information is very eye-opening.
3-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Already Knew But Didn't Want to be Told
You can forget the herbs, supplements, enzymes, and stress and fat blockers. The few prescription diet pills that work have side effects worse than the cure.If there is anything easy about weight control why do we have record obesity and more and more gastric bypass surgery? The low fat and low carb diets are just gimmicks akin to the grapefruit, boiled egg, cabbage soup and drinking man's diets. These diets may work short term, but they're not substainable. How many grapefruit can you eat and for how long?Bottom line, it's all about calories in - calories out, regardlesss of what you consume to get the calories.Losing requires a calorie deficit, more calories out than in.EXERCISE!An OK book, but really a 200+ page solicitation to join Weight Watchers. ... Diet schemes come and go. Successful plans, backed by powerful media machines, become bestsellers with sequels and food-product lines. But with so many diet books on the market, how do you decide which plan is right for you? According to Peter D'Adamo, the answer depends on your blood type. In his first book, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's the Why? Where's the How?
It's amazing to see the explosion in books offering veganism as the solution to the world's ills.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential forAnyone Looking to Prevent Chronic Disease
The author writes with zeal about the "new medicine" - vegan diet.Full of references and detail, this is a solid discussion of how chronic disease can be prevented (and managed/reveresed) with diet.As a vegan for over 3 years and a Registered Nurse, I thought I knew it all, but this book proved me wrong.Your average physician is going to do one thing, wait until you have disease and then prescribe medication or surgery to "manage it."You can do better.Take matters into your own hands and read this book!Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to Basics
This book, "The Vegan Diet as Chronic Disease Prevention", reinforces common sense attitudes toward the relationship between the quality of the diet and the resulting effect on health. This is the only book on the subject of health and diet that I have found that is simple enough for anyone to understand and yet sophisticated enough to cause most doctors and other health care providers to re-evaluate their practice of medicating the symptom and ignoring the root cause.Anyone doing research will love all of the credited sources and references, there is no "opinion" in this book, it is all proven with cited sources and studies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars What I think about this book
It has a lot of neat recipes in it!My husband is the "low-carber" in our family, and he has said that some of them need a little more flavor, usually salt.I've really enjoyed her unique recipes; out-of-the-ordinary seasonings like curry powder, I enjoy that. And some of them are just so darn easy, I love using it!Healthy yet convenient are my two favorite characteristics of recipe books.Thank you Dana!

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay - Not Great
I've seen many of the recipes this book contains on various Low-Carb websites.I've tried a couple and wasn't thrilled. If I'd been able to look through the book before purchasing it I probably would NOT have bought it.

2-0 out of 5 stars They're in lots of your favorite processed foods, so how bad could they be?

Editorial Review

It's easy to fall into high-fat, fast-food habits when we're busy, and who isn't busy? The American Heart Association has a solution: 200 recipes that are tasty, healthful, low-fat, and fast. The recipes--conveniently spiral-bound--take 20 minutes or less preparation time, and most take just a few minutes of additional cooking time. (Some require more cooking time, but you don't have to hover over them.) Don't skip breakfast when you can make Cinnamon-Bran Pancakes (total time: 11 to 14 minutes), Stuffed French Toast (16 to 18 minutes), or a Banana-Kiwi Breakfast Shake (5 minutes) in less time than it takes to pick up a muffin on your way to work. Your family or guests won't guess you whipped up dinner in a hurry when you make Pasta-Crusted Fish with Marinara Sauce (15 minutes), Sherried Seafood Sauté (15 minutes), or Skillet Chicken Thighs with Dried Berries (20 minutes). The book has an assortment of one-dish meals like Salmon and Brown Rice Bake, Black Bean Lasagna, and Chicken with Broccoli and Bulgur. There are also appetizers, vegetables, breads, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. All recipes include preparation time, cooking time, and nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), cholesterol, and sodium. Yummy photographs decorate the book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cookbooks I own - and I own a lot!!
I have never been disappointed with any recipe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Tasty
This cookbook is worth every penny. My husband's recent heart problems has forced him to a lo-cal, lo-cholesterol and lo-fat diet for the first time in his 60 years. We have enjoyed each recipe and, as the chief cook, I find them easy to put together.Living in a small town, ingredients can be very hard to find. This is not the case with "Quick and Easy".It lives up to its name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly tasty!
I'm not a fan of "healthy food" unfortunately - probably because the fanatics are so self-righteous - but this book may well have converted me.I've tried many of the recipes and found them delicious. Also easy to follow. It's not a "preachy" book, either. So if you'd like to upgrade your diet painlessly, give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good addition to healthy living collection
I found this book in the library, not long after I purchased SuperFoods. I checked it out 3 different times, and finally decided that both the information and the recipes were worth adding to my collection. I resisted at first, only because I am trying to scale down my cookbook collection. This was a great purchase, well worth the space on my (limited) shelves.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not good for normal people!
These recipes often call for ingrediates I've never heard of and have no idea where I would find them.Contrary to the borring cover the inside design is very pleasing but it becomes frusterating to not be able to make half the recipes. ... Read more
