3-0 out of 5 stars predictable, lacks imagination + one MAJOR error
I find that many of these recipes taste the same, because she has a few ingrediants that she calls for over and over: eggplant, mushrooms, cumin.Ho hum.Plus, there is one MAJOR mistake on page 106 -- in the Three Bean Chili with Bulghar, there should only be one (1) tsp of chili powder (or less), not 2 TBSP as it calls for!Despite my gut feeling that this was wrong, I followed her instructions, but had to freeze the entire batch I made, it was INEDIBLE (and we like spicy foods). Now when I make a chili, I scoop out about 1 cup of the frozen way-too-spicy chili and add it as the spice.I should be doing this for months...

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious food; a couple of minor gripes
So far, the recipes I've tried from this book have been delicious and fairly easy to prepare. (I avoid anything that looks very time-consuming or that requires exotic ingredients.) I'd definitely buy this book again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank goodness for this book!
I am a vegetarian with two young daughters - and no time to cook. On top of that my kids are allergic to dairy and soy. I had no idea what to cook for our family and how to find the time to cook it until I found this cookbook. Every recipe I have tried so far (and there aren't that many I haven't tried) has been really good. I start the recipe the night before, stick the slow cooker insert in the refrigerator, and then pull it out and get it going in the morning. There aren't that many vegetarian slow cooker cookbooks out there, and the others I've found have been duds, but this one is a keeper! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite
This cookbook is INCREDIBLE!I got it for my birthday 10 years ago and have tried at least half of the recipes in it -- and my copy is battered enough to prove it.I especially recommend the Tapenade, Turkish Spinach & Lentil Soup, Sayra's Greens, Pasta e Fagioli, Pepperpot Soup, Mocha Pecan Pie, Galletas de Nueces, Polvorones de Canela, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Pulla, Ukrainian Almond Crescents (OK, so I have a sweet tooth). The best gift I've ever gotten!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Cookbook for Beginning Cooks
I purchased this cookbook about 15 years ago - - a little while before I moved out on my own.I purchased "The Joy of Cooking" and "The Silver Palate" at the same time. This is an excellent cookbook.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really great book!
I've used this book so many times that the binding is cracked. There are post-it notes sticking up from too many pages to count. And the book automatically opens to my favorite recipe, Pasta e Fagioli. It is my idea of the ultimate comfort food, and I cannot count how many times we've enjoyed it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Candidiasis ad infinitum
Of the large numbers of books on this subject, this one offered little new information.I did see a few recipes that appealed, but could have easily skipped this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Candidia Albican Yeast-Free Cookbook, The: How Good Nutrition Can Help Fight the Epidemic of Yeast-Related Diseases
This book has helped answer many of my questions regarding Candida and has explained what I can expect as I go through the healing process. It is very informative in relation to diet and has good recipes to make the plain food we have to eat a little more exciting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Candida Recipes
I thought this book was very helpful. What I liked most was the "rainbow meal plan" which listed the vegetables and meat combinations you could have on this diet at every meal.Because there are so many vegetables/meat combinations to choose from you shouldn't get bored. The plan also recommends steaming for all your food so it's easy to prepare - all you need is water, a pot and a steamer. The downside is you do have to chop a lot of veggies - however, it's worth it! I also had a hard time with another recipe which called for "Homemade Potassium Baking Powder" pg.83. In the recipe the book says to use potassium bicarbonate which can be ordered from a pharmacy. However, when I went to pick up my bicarbonate it had a skull and cross bone on the bottle and was rated somewhat toxic. When I talked to the pharmacist he said I needed to know what percentage of the potassium bicarbonate was called for because potassium bicarbonate is a strong base.Anyway I had no way to get that information so I skipped that recipe. So obviously the book should be more detailed about things like that.Yet even with this snaffoo I thought the book was helpful and still use most recipes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quick preparation and delicious!
Love the binding on this book.Very good recipes.Ingredients you usually have on hand. Will suggest it to friends.

1-0 out of 5 stars Busy People should eat better than this!
I own a lot of cookbooks and have honestly never purchased a more ridiculous book. Seven ingredients or less, yes - it's easy when you're using canned soup, prepared chili or bottled marinade. The recipes feature a lot of processed ingredients too like non-dairy creamer for potato chowder. And I don't need a slow cooker to make tea - 8 teabags, water, mint extract and splenda - 2 hours in the old slow cooker and voila, you have something that should take ten minutes to make. Convenient - maybe, Easy - yes, Delicious, no way.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Cookbook Is Great!!!!!
First of all, if you purchase the book, read the story at the beginning of the cookbook. Dawn Hall, the author, put together her cookbooks to help support her family when her husband had Cancer and then passed away. Now, other families who have a family member with cancer or other organizations can use her cookbook's to sell and raise money for their charitable organization's.Her family's story is an incredibly inspirational one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Absolute must have book for the new Vegan!
If you are new to Veganism, you are probably missing the familiar flavors of cheese. Although you cannot copy the flavor exactly, the book has many tasty recipes so that you can keep enjoying your old favorites while making a difference for your health and the rest of the planet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing!
The hardest part of becoming vegan for me was giving up cheese. This book literally saved my life (and the lives of countless animals!). The recipes are interesting and inventive, and while they don't taste, look, or behave exactly like cheese, they still have an uncanny resemblance and flavor that truly satisfies. Some of my favorites: Crock Cheez, Gee Whiz Spread, Port Wine Uncheese, Broccoli Pesto Pasta, Cheez Please Soup, Zucchini Chedda Soup, Philly Potato Chowder, Besto Pesto, Tofu Pate, Stuffed Shells, Chickpea Flour Pizza, French Bread Pizza, Cheez-A-Roni, and Tetrazzini. And I don't know what I would do without simple, convenient, inexpensive, and healthful staples like Parmezano Sprinkles (a Parmesan cheese alternative), which I use on almost everything, and Instant Cheez-It (a dry mix for cheesy sauces on-the-fly). People who don't like this book clearly haven't explored it fully. As with any cookbook, there are some recipes I like more than others, but there is so much to love here that you are sure to find your "cheese tooth" satisfied!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Cookbook I Was Always Waiting For!
This cookbook is pure magic!Who would have thought you could combine a few simple ingredients and end up with the most sumptuous sauces, delicious dips, and enticing entrees without using one ounce of dairy? Not to mention the block cheezes which work so well in a sandwich or sliced onto crackers. What amazing alchemy is at work here?I came across Ms. Stepaniak's first uncheese cookbook (The Uncheese Cookbook) several years ago when my then teenage daughter decided to become vegan.I really needed some ideas for food that was familiar, yet vegan, and also delicious, and hopefully healthy."The Uncheese Cookbook" satisfied all these requirements, and then some.I was simply amazed at the delicious recipes and the overwhelmingly positive responses from my family.Needless to say, this book soon became a much loved and much used treasure.I actually ordered a spare copy as I was worried I would wear out the first!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple is as simple does
Nothing fancy here, but if you need a few quick slow-cooker recipes always on hand, well, here you go. I especially like the stuffed peppers. I found this did the trick as far as comfort food that reminded me of my dear old mum.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a happy buyer
I've made 2 of the recipes so far and am reluctant to try more. If I had known what I now know BEFORE I bought the book, I'd never have bought it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Unimpressive
As a vegan for almost 10 years, and someone who loves to cook, I am constantly searching for new cookbooks. While the recipes in this book were easy to follow, the few that I tried did not taste very good.I tried four of the recipes, being faithful to the instructions. The recipes seemed to rely on an overdose of spices.I was not impressed.Simple, yes.Tasty, no. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cookbook
I love this cookbook. There are so many amazing recipes. As someone who is allergic to dairy, I am totally blown away at how creamy some of the dishes are. Besides the recipes, the book is filled with beautiful pictures and profound quotes that combine together to create a really special reading experience. 5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Quick
My husband was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes last year.It was a shock and I went crazy buying cookbooks on Amazon to help me deal with his new dietary requirements.1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed...
Unless you live in town or a city, can afford to purchase countless ingredients in Miss Webb's recipes from alternate sources such as health food stores or expensive grocery stores, don't count on finding many ofthese ingredients in your average run-of-the-mill grocery store in a smalltown. These meals may take little time to prepare, but if you're not in ahigher income-bracket and you have a family to feed, you probably won'tlike this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy healthy cooking ideas
This book is true to its title.I loved that it listed some main "healthy" staples at the beginning of the book that everyone should have on hand.I also really liked the easy meal ideas at thebeginning of the book for those nights you need recipes that will usewhatever you have on hand in your cabinets. Some of the main recipes werea little more complicated than I had hoped.Still, overall this was anexcellant choice and I know that I will use it for years to come. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Practical sauerkraut book
Even though this is a thin book, this is packed with information - basically everything you need to get you started.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good - but something missing
This is a generally well-written and nicely illustrated book, but there seems to be a piece of information missing in the description for making basic sauerkraut (pages 19-20).At the end of the recipe for making kraut in the Harsch crock it states that "the water must cover the weight stones . . ."However, at no point in the recipe is the addition of water indicated.I'd very much like to try this process out but want to get it exactly right. So now I have to go on my own quest to try and figure out this water question (does the pressed cabbage make it's own water, do I have to add it, and if so, when?).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of show
This book does exactly what the cover promises. The layout and format is clean and the flow of information is logical as well as being easy to digest.

I kind of had my doubts about this book. My boyfriend and I have occasionally stopped by her show on PBS to mock her husband's guitar playing. Next time we might restrain ourselves - all the recipes we've tried from this book have been wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars I really love this book!
Christina is so great at what she does when it comes to cooking with whole foods. Her recipes in this book are easy and you can find the ingredients in any Whole Foods market. 4-0 out of 5 stars Use the philsophy of this book every day but most of the recipes only a few times a week.
I just discovered this book and was really excited to read it. I must say that overall I wasn't disappointed. Her explanations on how we impact our bodies and the earth by the choices we make in food and even in the products we use is truly convincing. Her enthusiasm for food is contageous. The fact that she discusses various eating plans and the philosophy behind each is really wonderful. The amount of good information presented is amazing. That said, I was a little confused about the recipes. I am of Italian heritage so I was raised on olive oil, beans, nuts, grains, etc and continue to make them my basic food choices. But just because nuts and good quality oils have health benefits doesn't mean you can use them with wild abandon. Some of the recipes in this book have way too much fat per serving. Unless you're extremely active I truly can't imagine using most of these recipes on a regular basis and being able to control your weight. For example, there is a recipe for "Massaged Greens". This veg side dish has 11 grams of fat per serving (and only 150 calories). As someone who eats alot of greens, I can say first hand that a drizzle of good quality oil is all that you really need to season greens, anything more and you drown out their flavor. The "Walnut Oatmeal Raisin Cookies" are 400 calories and 21 grams of fat per cookie! To be fair, not all of the recipes are high in fat but the majority are. The other odd thing about many of these recipes are the copius amounts of sodium. Soy sauce (shoyu) seems to be the culprit here. The "Soba Noodle Salad" and the "Soba Noodle Soup" have 3,130 mg and 3,390 mg of sodium per serving respectively. And the above mentioned"Massaged Greens": 960 mg. of sodium per serving. Alot of recipes have 600 mg or higher (although not all recipes are high in sodium). So, I was baffled that Dean Ornish would write the Forward. Unless he's loosened his militant stance on the "proper" way to eat for health, he seemed like the last person who would herald most of the recipes in this tome.So maybe one should use the philosophy of this book every single day but the recipes only a few times a week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tips & Ideas On Safely Eating Out With Gluten/Food Allergies!
This book has been very helpful as a mom of a 2 yr old food allergy child. When my daughter was diagnosed with a couple of severe food allergies and many sensitivies, we had not dined out for a while. This book has helped to truly understand what to look out for and how to manage the eating out process. It's easy to use and I was impressed by the tips and knowledge relating to dealing with the specific top 10 allergens when dining out.Not only does it deal with the 10 allergens but relates them to each of the 7 cuisines such as Indian, American Steak and Seafood, French, etc. giving helpful tips on how allergens may be "hidden" or used in preparation that you would never expect. The book helps you to identify these items and communicate effectively with the restaurant staff. In addition, there is also useful information on safely choosing snacks when you are out, travel, etc.The book has helped me gain confidence in dining out as a family again. The book is a great read for those with celiac, food allergies or even parents of children with food allergies!

"Let's Eat Out!" will make you hungry and give you the power to protect yourself from food allergies at the same time. This series is an amazingly comprehensive guide that is sure to help thousands of people to feel more in control of their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease about a year ago and all the cookbooks I've used so far haven't been very good. So, needless to say, I was skeptical of this book that was getting rave reviews.I must say, this is by far the best gluten-free cookbook I've used.I've baked pumpkin muffins, pumpkin bread, a pizza and a birthday cake and all were wonderful.I'm not sure what Annalise does differently, but the breads are fluffy and rise just like wheat-based breads.I highly recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quackery!!!
Do not buy this book! The author's views and opinions are ,in my opinion, nothing but quackery. In fact, after just briefly scanning the book section after section, the author comes across as very opinionated, arrogant and superior. I was expecting a book that was full of useful information that I could apply to my young family, but what I found was a book full of unnecessary judgements and guilt trips. I am very, very, very disappointed. This book offends me so much that I had to write this review. The author states to eat in moderation and not to get hung up on the guidelines of good nutrition (which I agree to some extent). But when did loading your plate up with extra fat, salt and sugar in order to make your food taste good became part of a healthy eating plan? Her thinking is completely backwards. She then goes on to discuss that a diet high in saturated fat is not directly related to heart disease and that heart disease is not the number one killer in America, so we should learn to loosen up with our dietary restrictions! Excuse me, but what planet does she live on? Any physician, researcher, nutritionist, etc. will tell you that a diet high in saturated fat is directly related to heart disease. I should know, I am a registered nurse and I care for patients with heart disease all of the time. Furthermore, in a society that is obsessed with gigantic food portions and unhealthy food choices, obesity is fast becoming a crucial health concern. In a way, her book encourages this thinking of unhealthy eating and may directly or indirectly promote obesity. Wow!!!!!! Finally, the author is especially harsh and conscending with people who actually want to make good, wholesome, healthy food from scratch. Her comments about not being a food snob truly infuriated me. Cooking with canned soup may be fine for some people, but for some this is not OK for obvious reasons (high sodium content, etc.) And when did hot dogs, ice cream and potato chips become classified as nutritious? I could go on and on, but I will refrain. This book utterly disgusts and sickens me! Please do yourself a favour and keep looking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learn to eat!
This is an excellent primer for parents (and maybe even just young singles or couples starting out on their own) who need help with basic feeding skills like cooking and grocery shopping. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for parents of all cooking abilities
Ellyn Satter seems to direct this book at parents with minimal cooking experience or desire. This is probably justified based on her topic, but I am a happy and experienced home cook and I really enjoyed the book too.She explains useful tips for adapting foods for little eaters and how to round out meals with appealing vegetables and desserts.I love this book!A great companion to Child Of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense, because it provides lots of recipes to help apply the very sensible eating principles from Child Of Mine. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Bible??The book is less then a inch thick!
Maybe its the beginners bible and not the holy bible size they were talking about. This book is for beginners only!!The main part of this book is recipes. If I wanted that I would have bought a recipe book not a book to teach me about diabetes nutrition. This is not a complete anything!!!Try Prevention The Sugar Solution.I am returning the "bible".What a waste of my money having to return this book. Not sure why it has so many stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bibld
This is a very informative book, with lots of tips.I've tried some of the recipes and they are good.I also purchased the book for a family member and they also found a lot of useful information in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Deliver What It Promises
I would not recommend this book for people who are trying to get their life together after a diagnosis of diabetes. I bought this book because its subtitle is "A Complete Guide to Planning, Shopping, Cooking, and Eating". It is none of those things.

Editorial Review

When Michael Milken was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 1993, he wasted no time switching from his daily egg-and-bacon-sandwich breakfasts to a low-fat, vegetarian diet. He also founded CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate. Through research supported by CaP CURE, Milken learned that cutting down on fat was not enough--that soy protein could be an important missing ingredient in his diet. He duly incorporated all of the cancer-fighting ingredients into his diet, but he missed the joy of eating.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
The book presents recipes attractively.I've tried a few and they were easier and better than I expected, given the somewhat unusual ingredients for familiar foods. The book goes astray, to some degree, in my opinion, because it works too hard at recreating unhealthy high fat foods with low-fat, high-soy, equivalents.Better to just present vegetarian recipees that don't try to seem like something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars a treat for the eyes
what i loved most about this book is the 'photojournalist'4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who are lactose intolerant
I purchased this book because it contained recipes like flan that didn't require any dairy products. It also provides some great tips for substituting out ingredients like cream and other milk products without sacrificing texture and taste.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
We enjoyed many of the recipes in the book and found George stellas story compelling. Some of his recipes contain more soy based products then we were comfortable with, but all in all the food was very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Taste As Well As Good Sense
I am a Type II diabetic, & over 50, with over 100 pounds to lose. For the past year, I've tried to lose weight, unsuccessfully. I had watched George Stella on the Food Network, and enjoyed the recipes. I had tried Atkins, managed to bore myself into a coma, get constipated, and actually gain weight. But what I noticed from watching George (besides his family's truly inspirational success losing weight) was the inclusion of vegetables, fruits, and above all, flavor. I love to cook, and this was the first time when going low carb made sense to me. It's easy to "shop the outer aisles" & work with the "approved" list of ingridients. I bought this cookbook, and the newest one, and am happily cooking my way to good health. All I can say is try the cheese cake recipe. No deprivation here! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book has the Best Tasting Wheat-Free Pumpkin Pie Recipe
This is a great cookbook. The pumkin pie crust is wheat free and it tastes great. It's always a hit at the holidays, and the pumkin pie part of the recipe is dairy free, this recipe is so nutritious that you can eat it anytime. The entire book has some great solutions. And if you are in NYC you should try to take a class at Ann Marie's Cooking School.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
This is a great follow-up to The Book of Whole Meals, because the food gets more creative. The first part of the book explains how to balance meals using the Chinese 5-Element system, which really helps in overcoming cravings for junk foods. They also label the recipes so you can figure out how to fit them into the system. I have to admit I've mainly used the book for this purpose. For the recipes, I adjusted them to suit my own taste, and found them satisfying. ... Read more
