5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy and healthy!
I've been a subscriber of Cooking Light for several years now, and I always try to buy the annual cook book at the end of each year. These recipes produce dishes that are delicious, adventurous, and satisfying. I've not only learned alot about eating healthy foods by using these cookbooks, I've become a much better cook! Also, since the magazine has features on different ethnic cuisines, I've tried foods that I never would have made previously, with great success. Some of the recipes are more time-consuming than others, so make those on the weekend rather than during the week. 4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of wonderful recipes, long prep time
I've been a subscriber to Cooking Light magazine for a couple of years and I love it.I decided to get the 2003 book to save some space. The photographs in the book are beautiful and mouth-watering, but there are not enough (I like to see what the final product looks like when I am cooking).I do like that the nutritional information including calories, fat, protein, carb, fiber are listed for each recipe.I do find that many of the recipes have a long prep time and this a deterrent for me at this busy stage in my life. For the "true" chef, though, there will be no problem and the recipes will be wonderful to make.Generally, the ingredients are readily available, but for some of the recipes, there are ingredients that I have no idea where to buy them. The book is organzied by month--like the magazine.Really, overall, a beautiful book.

3-0 out of 5 stars total confusion
While there is a whole years worth of recipes in one book it will probably take a year to find a particular recipe. The index is very confusing. Cooks will just end up frustrated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Updated version even better than the first one
This book, as well as the concept of avoiding Monosodium Glutamate (and MSG by its 80 other names) explains a way of life we should all live by.It is in-depth, yet very easy to read and understand. The author explains in a comprehensive way, how you can live in America and still choose to eat for your health-she tells you how to do just that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book first
I bought my first copy in 1999 when I suffered from disabling migraines. As I began to learn about food and what to avoid I began to gain control over my migraines. I still buy this book to give to others who seem most appreciative. I also can not understand why anyone would discount this book.It gives a clear and concise overview of the problem many people have with food sensitivity but don't comprehend. If people want to go on further and experiment with vitamins and supplements that is fine.I personally am willing to make some dietary changes to have a better quality of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information to a better and healthy you.
Got this book in Febuary 2006, read the book from cover to cover. The information has helped change my life after the doctor told me I had Fibromalygia. (I'm pain free now....) The recipes in the book are great and has helped me come up with some new ones on my own. ... Read more

Editorial Review

About 60 million Americans have high blood pressure, which increases their risk of heart disease. The two best ways to lower blood pressure without medication are lowering sodium in your diet and controlling your weight. The American Heart Association cookbooks always help you reduce the fat in your diet--now this one helps you reduce the sodium, too.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I was very pleased with this book.Helpful information and lots of recipes.I would purchase this book again for someone else facing the LOW SALT issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Met my expectations for a low fat cookbook.
Met my expectations for a low far cookbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Was Hoping For
This cookbook contains a decent variety of recipes, but seems more geared towards low fat cooking than low sodium cooking. If you're casually trying to reduce sodium a bit this may be fine, but if you're on a very strict diet many of the recipes probably won't be acceptable.I found many of the recipes a bit unimaginative and lacking excitement, being perhaps geared towards people who find mild picante sauce too spicy. And the book itself sounds like it was written by a government lawyer trying to avoid litigation with frequent use of awkward terms such as "acceptable vegetable oil" in recipes. There are better choices out there. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Salt is the Cause; Not the Solution
There's an old Texan story about a Texican who goes into a general store that is having a closing sale.He sees that a whole wall of the store is stacked with nothing but buffalo pucky and salt: bags of buffalo pucky and bags of salt, blocks of buffalo pucky and blocks of salt, shakers of buffalo pucky and shakers of salt.Just buffalo pucky and salt from floor to ceiling (everything's big in Texas). So he says to the store clerk, "Dude, you sure sell a lot of buffalo pucky and salt!"The store clerk replies, "I wish that were the case. The only one selling a lot of buffalo pucky and salt is the salesman that talked me into buying all this."

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the the best
I agree, this is a must have for anyone following a low salt diet.Who says food has to be tasteless???I learned so many cooking ideas from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem for Low Sodium Cooking
I bought a copy of this book about 25 years ago when a family member was put on a low sodium diet. It was a great beginner's guide to managing a low sodium diet, with lots of helpful tips. But even after I no longer needed to cook low sodium, I continued to use many of the recipes, just because they taste good.I finally gave my copy to a friend who was starting out on low sodium, and now I miss it. I think I'll have to get a new copy for myself, just for the recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Low Sodium - NOT Just Low Salt
"Low sodium" does not mean just "low salt"! We were amazed to find how much sodium is hidden in processed foods we never associated with salt. This book helped explain how a low sodium diet can alleviate water retention in the heart and lungs for my mother, who suffers from diabetes, congestive heart failure and cardiopulmonary disease. Not only were the recipes easy to prepare (really just modifying preparation of the foods she already likes to eat), but it also included ideas for substitutions and where to find them. It is so nice to see her able to move about without shortness of breath! But the immediate payoff is the quick weight loss as she sheds pounds of accumulated water from edema. I purchased the book as a gift and I think it's the best investment I ever made. ... Read more

I have Hemochromatosis and I was unable to enjoy many foods because of the disorder, now because of this book, I can cook quality food, that tastes good and is healthy for my body. 1-0 out of 5 stars Bad science
The author is guilty of repeating a lot of bad science. The is ABSOLUTELY no difference between table salt and sea salt as far as the body is concerned. The same goes for natural vs artificial MSG, which is recognized as "generally safe" by the FDA.
4-0 out of 5 stars 501 ways to changes
Anne Louise Gittleman provides helpful tips on how to become a better and more healthier person. With 501 ways to get harmful salt and sodium out of any diet, this book was very informative, supplying and in-depth look into the affects that both salt and sodium have on the body. If your concerend with what salt can do to your body, this book sure helps. Gittleman covers all areas that invlove salt, from refining it, how the body uses it,to how much the body should consume. Salt and sodum can be the source of many illnesses from headaches to hypertension. The thing that I liked about the book was that it alerted the reader to hidden sources of sodium and that it suggested the reasonable amounts of sodium and salt that should be consumed daily.
5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive, Thorough Little Book
"Get the Salt Out" does indeed contain 501 numbered suggestiond for cutting salt from your diet.A number of these suggestions overlap, but I was impressed by the thoroughness of the book.I have high blood pressure and have been on a low-salt diet for years; however, this book alerted me to many hidden sources of sodium, such as baking soda and packaged cereals. The book is split into sections, such as getting the salt out of cooking, finding good low-salt fast food, and low-salt sauces. The author even points out that licking postage stamps adds sodium to your diet! That's thoroughness!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A cornucopia of quick and delicious dishes that will reduce salt intake while enhancing flavorful dining
Most Americans simply use to much salt in their foods. For some, excess sodium is putting their health into serious jeopardy. For anyone who must be "salt conscious" about what they eat or serve, The Hasty Gourmet Low Salt Favorites is a compendium of three hundred "kitchen cook friendly" recipes that will offer a cornucopia of quick and delicious dishes that will reduce salt intake while enhancing flavorful dining. In addition to savory dishes ranging from Curried Yam and Apple Bisque; Asparagus Turkey with Cream Sauce; and Onion Casserole; to Celery with Pimento-Walnut Cheese; Potato Crusted Breakfast Pizza; and Pecan Pie with Bourbon Creme, The Hasty Gourmet Low Salt Favorites also provides such useful advice regarding what to stock in the low-salt pantry, low-salt shopping tips (including which brands to by and which to avoid), limiting sodium without sacrificing flavor, and the fine culinary art of substituting ingredients when adapting favorite recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooking Light: The Lazy Gourmet
Turns out to be a great addition to my shelf of Cooking Light Cookbooks! I purchased The Lazy Gourmet a few weeks ago because of my positive experiences with this series (and the magazine)but I didn't expect it to be this good! I've previously been disappointed with some of those "six-ingredients-or less" type cookbooks because the recipes aren't *really* six ingredients--you have to add several more just to get some flavor, and/or they rely too heavily on convenience foods. But so far, The Lazy Gourmet has delivered on its promise, without sacrificing flavor or nutrition. These aren't "instant" recipes--they do (mostly) list more than six ingredients and they do take more time than slapping a chicken breast in a pan with prepared Teriyaki sauce--but we're talking gourmet here! You expect to cook a *little*!There is some use of mixes (low-fat brownie mix, for instance) but in my experience the convenience-foods in the recipes, like frozen hash browns (in a delicious portabella-mushroom & Asigo cheese brunch dish) or frozen mixed vegatables (in a pretty, savory, stuffed crookneck squash side dish)work well--and the completed recipestaste good, are low-fat, and look like they took a lot more time to prepare then they did! Try the awesome stuffed chicken-breast recipe, with a spinach and prepared low-fat pesto stuffing (and a coating of cornflakes) at your next dinner-party.It's delicious and looks great. After only a few weeks, I have gotten five stellar, entertaining-quality recipes out of it. That justifies the purchase price as far as I'm concerned.
