5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Gourmet recipes
I cameacross the raw movement while on a juice fast, I have been juicing for several years now. When I found the book, the green juice recipes are worth the buy in themselves. Then I finally got a dehydrator and voila!Deliciouso! The snacks and the gourmet meals are far beyond what I have been doing, (3 months raw)even the salad dressings are amazing. If you have been spoiled with gourmet flavors then this is your book. Please note that the preparations are sometimes lengthy but well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book, gorgeous food!
I love this book! After browsing through it, I'm totally inspired to create raw food! Some of the recipes look a bit tricky, but overall the food sounds incredible.I am also very impressed by all the information they have about various health topics (lecithin, cutting out dairy) and their own personal stories and advice.I'm a raw food novice, but I can already tell that this is the best raw food book I own.As Sarma says, "Eat raw, live long!"

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book
The recipes are great.Of all the raw food recipes I have tried these are the most flavourful and appetising.I love their wit and how they really do bring raw food eating into the real world.Taking the raw food diet out of the underground of what is viewed as fanatics and bringing it to the mainstream, fitting it into anyones life. You do not have to be a raw foodist to love their recipes. Many raw recipes that I have tried in the past have been less than exciting, not really enjoyable, and bland and boring. But these were all the opposite, full flavour, fulfilling, satisfying, indulgent. My first bite of the lasagna took my breath away.I had no idea that so much flavour could be packed into one bite and leave you with no guilt or heavy feeling, but just the opposite, give you energy. And the colours!!The colours are so vibrant, unmutted by cooking.Staying raw would not be hard with these recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sublime!
This cookbook is amazing. The author is a genius on how to get foods that are equal to or better than their egg-and-dairy counterparts. Love it love it love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've got more vengeance than you can shake a stick at
When I first checked this book out from the library I did something that I've never done with a cookbook before--I sat down and just read it. The author is so entertaining, witty, and engaging that I just liked reading the recipe descriptions, punk points, tips from Fizzle the cat, and litte vignettes that are woven into the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!!
Although not a Vegan, I highly recommend this book to everyone and anyone. First, whether or not you are vegan, I am certain that several recipes from this book will become favorites of yours as they did for me. In addition, this book would have stood on its own as a book of stories. If you want to laugh out loud as I did while reading this book on the bus on my way to work, simply check out the stories written in the introduction, before each section and preceding each recipe as well as Ms. Moskowitz' punk points and 'Fizzle Says:' paragraphs. Great recipes for every meal of the day and scrumptious desserts for any time. No matter what your age, gender, musical inclinations or dietary preferences, this is a cookbook for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any slow-cooker-loving vegetarian!
I love this cookbook! There are some really great recipes in it for every event, and every situation. The recipes are also comprised of everyday ingredients, not elaborate or exotic ingredients that no one has. Great stuff! A must-have for any slow-cooker-loving vegetarian!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great vegitarian crock pot book
The recipes are good, especially the potatoe and pesto dish. I did not like the dish called Breakfast bread pudding, due to the fact I thought the flavors contradicted each other.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Rachel Ray
I have previously read many of Rachel Ray's cook books and had always wished there was one with more vegetarian recipes. Well, this one is just that. Simple, 30 minute meals that taste great and are easy to make.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good food, but a lot alike
I've made several dishes from this book, but I have to say a lot of them are so similar that it's not like a new recipe. I'm a big fan of RR's cook books, and granted this is one of her earlier ones. Her other cook books don't have many vegitarian meal- she loves her meat. So, this was a great idea. As she says in the beginning that her fans asked her to make it, and that's what she did. I gave it 3 stars because the recipies are good, and easy to follow. But there are too many that are so similar. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious foodstuffs but not 100% raw
While I certainly agree with previous reviewers that Cornbleet's recipes make some fantastic dishes (I like her chocolate mousse far better than the dairy-laden original), confirmed raw foodists should be forewarned that many of Cornbleet's recipes include non-raw ingredients. While an experienced "rawie" will know, for instance, that maple syrup is not raw, someone new to raw foodism may not. Unfortunately, detailed and informative though Cornbleet's directions and auxiliary information are, she often doesn't identify cooked ingredients when calling for them in recipes. Had she done a better job identifying cooked ingredients and perhaps suggesting raw alternatives, I'd rate this book a 5++ without a doubt. It's a superb transitional book, however, or a great choice for someone such as I've become who merely wants to eat varied raw meals more often.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I started eating raw four months ago, have lost 22 pounds and feel great!Eating raw is a challenge, but this wonderful book really does help to make it easy.I use recipes from it at least a few times a week - the ingredients are readily available, the instructions are simple and the results are delicious! In addition, this book has been a great source of information and inspiration for me in making the switch to a raw diet.I admire Jenny Cornbleet's determination and commitment to helping others learn raw food and hope that she has more raw recipe books in the works!

4-0 out of 5 stars Raw food cuisine can be intensely flavorful and pleasurable, and fun.
ennifer Cornbleet book: Raw Food Made Easy For 1 or 2 People is your guide to quick and easy and inexpensive meals that focus on fruits and vegetables. She provides quick references to all recipes (which are all easy to make and don't rely on obscure foods.) She will also teach you raw food preparation and how to plan menus that take more time planning than they do preparing. (In other words, her recipes are quick and easy to prepare:-)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for at all.
I admit it, the 12 steps to Raw foods should have given away that this book is just a rehash of 12 steps.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book!
I liked this book.It was very sincere, clear and helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Courage to create change through personal choice
Victoria Boutenko is a revolutionary. Like those who have come before her and those who will follow, it is not an easy path, nor will everyone see the truth in what she espouses. However, it is essential to to read this book (and her others if you wish to have a comprehensive view) to begin to understand how our food choices affect not only our health, but our surroundings as well. I was in a natural food store this morning in Eugene, Oregon and was delighted to see this title as well as many of her others above the shelf in the living food section of the store. 12 Steps is an important piece of the literature that is finally becoming available to the masses, shedding light on how to be healthy, prevent illness, and be a part of the sustainable movement that is necessary if we are to continue to inhabit this earth.

Editorial Review

"Gourmet raw cuisine"--if that sounds like an oxymoron, you'll be amazed by the creativity of the recipes in this book. Every food is "live" (uncooked) in these vegetarian recipes from Juliano, the raw-food guru of Los Angeles. Juliano believes that fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, beans, and seeds in their rawest and purest form are the most nourishing foods. If your imagination stops at alfalfa sprouts and grated carrots, hold onto your cutting board. Juliano's recipes include Butternut Squash Soup, New Moon Fruit Stew, Thai Green Papaya Salad, Living Buckwheat Pizza Crust, Mango Essene Bread, Mock Salmon Sushi, Raw Spring Rolls, seven varieties of burritos, nine varieties of pizza, and nine unusual smoothies. Desserts? Try EZ Pudding (made with maple syrup, avocados, and carob powder) or Cashew Gelato (cashew butter, maple syrup, and almonds, served frozen). There are also condiments, dressings, and sauces, and plenty of information about preparing raw foods, including how to soak and sprout beans, grains, seeds, and nuts. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun, flashy, but difficult
I am relatively new at being (mostly) "raw." For the past couple of months I've been exploring raw foods, trying out different books, online sources, etc (and feeling quite healthy, by the way). Juliano certainly has his niche in this raw world, but he's not for everyone. He is a colorful, flamboyant personality with a passion for raw foods, and his enthusiasm is infectious. I love his writing style, and I think he'd be a blast at a party. BUT this "uncook book" is not for beginners, nor "real" people who want fast, simple, do-able recipes. He's a restauranteur, hence the foods he makes need to be flashy. They take MANY ingredients (many of them are exotic, hard to find, hard to pronounce!), lots of prep time, and while I have certainly enjoyed reading this gorgeous, glossy book (which I got from the library), I am not finding myself making too many of these recipes. Just too difficult. When I look at a recipe that takes 14 ingredients (and serves 2) I'm just not gonna make it... I would, however, love to visit his restaurant next time I'm in California!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent gourmet raw diet book
Although I do not strictly practice a raw food regmimen at all times, this book helps tremendously by providing tasty ways to make the diet more rich and palatable over time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A meal in itself...
This book is delicious! There are excellent photos of both the dishes and the different areas and peoples of the Silk Road,The text is interesting, with information about history, cultures, cooking techniques, and food items.I appreciate that the recipes are not complicated or particularly labor-intensive.I have tried three so far, and all three were hits.I have a large collection of cookbooks, but if I had to start all over again, this one would be one of my first buys.

5-0 out of 5 stars spectacular and delicious
this is a beautiful book with somewhat complex recipes but educational. my friend borrowed it to use it in her geography class covering the silk road topic. the pictures are spectacular. it is classified as paperback but the quality of paper and print make it as durable and beautiful as a hardback. i strongly recommend this book not just for the wonderful recipes also to amuse your eyes. let your imaginations travel!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike
This beautiful and highly readable cookbook contains delicious, if somewhat complex, recipes for dishes from Italy to China. All of them are vegetarian, but many could be adapted to meat eaters, or used as an accompaniment. If used as an accompaniment, bear in mind that the cookbook is targeted to vegetarians who plan to make th main dish the bulk of their meal; double the number served if used as an accompaniment. If you love to cook, this book will inspire you and add variety to your repetoire. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Reference Book of Flavors
The reason why I continuously return to this cookbook is because it is what I would describe as the cooking equivalent of a paintbox.Yes, you can follow madison's recipes exactly and come up with a delicious final dish, but what this book is truly commendable for is that it is so full of ideas.I have heard someone knock the simplicity of some of these recipes but that is the beauty of this book--it's focus on strong straightforward flavors that will go well together.Whenever I find myself with a bunch of spinach in the fridge or a cabinet empty of anything but a few cans of chickpeas, I flip through this book and inevitably get reminded that with my trusty spice rack, I can whip up something quick and healthy that also has complex flavors.I use the recipes as inspiration or guideline and rarely follow them exactly. As a recent fish convert and a person who inevitably ends up cooking meat for family, I also find that any moderately experienced cook would be able to easily modify these recipes to create carniverous dishes.A must-have cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Wholesome & Relatively Easy Fare
I'm a twenty-year-old committed vegetarian, and over the past year or so I've become very interested in cooking as a creative activity, rather than just another task. Deborah Madison's recipies in this cookbook are, on the whole, very simple and filled with flavor. I think of it kind of like a Joy of Cooking, but for vegetarians, because she has so much information on basic cooking how-to's, which is immensely useful if you haven't spent a lot of time in the kitchen yet.Her recipies usually start from basic vegetables you can find at a grocery store or farmer's market, so if you're interested in trying new foods (but don't know where to start), this is perfect for you. There are some illustrations and photos of what the vegetables and dishes look like, plus handy lists of how to buy, store, and prepare various vegetables. I highly recommend this book, and think it should be a staple on any serious vegetarian's bookshelf. Delicious!

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPER Comprehensive
This cookbook is kind of like "The Joy of Cooking" for vegetarians. It has an amazing comprehensive section on different kinds of vegetables.I really like that it actually lists recipes by vegetables so that you can try to find a recipe with what's on sale at the store, or just try one of those "weird" vegetables that seemed too intimidating before. My only criticisms of the book is that it doesn't offer a lot of good lower fat substitutes in recipes (there's a lot of fattening stuff in here!), and somehow, it feels like it's missing some of the creativity normally found in vegetarian cookbooks.Don't be fooled by the bland recipe titles, every single recipe I've made has tasted and LOOKED amazing. ... It's amazing to see the explosion in books offering veganism as the solution to the world's ills.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential forAnyone Looking to Prevent Chronic Disease
The author writes with zeal about the "new medicine" - vegan diet.Full of references and detail, this is a solid discussion of how chronic disease can be prevented (and managed/reveresed) with diet.As a vegan for over 3 years and a Registered Nurse, I thought I knew it all, but this book proved me wrong.Your average physician is going to do one thing, wait until you have disease and then prescribe medication or surgery to "manage it."You can do better.Take matters into your own hands and read this book!Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to Basics
This book, "The Vegan Diet as Chronic Disease Prevention", reinforces common sense attitudes toward the relationship between the quality of the diet and the resulting effect on health. This is the only book on the subject of health and diet that I have found that is simple enough for anyone to understand and yet sophisticated enough to cause most doctors and other health care providers to re-evaluate their practice of medicating the symptom and ignoring the root cause.Anyone doing research will love all of the credited sources and references, there is no "opinion" in this book, it is all proven with cited sources and studies. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners
I found this book disappointing, and much prefer her previous book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide, OK recipes
This book is interesting to read and great help in deciding what to eat to balance your vikrities (imbalances). You start out learning some Ayurvedic basics and then you can test yourself to find out what your dosha (constitution) is.Then you learn what foods and tastes agrivate or calm that dosha. It tells you a little bit about what the symptoms of an imbalance might be, but I got more descriptive information about that on the Internet. One reason I like this book is because me and my fiance are different constitutions, and this book tells us which foods will calm/ balance us both. There are simple instructions on most recipes that explain how to modify the recipe so that it suits a person with a different constitution. It also has codes for what seasons to eat what food, and every chapter or so has interesting blurbs about different foods and philosophies. That part I enjoy. And from my experience, Ayurveda WORKS.Fast and precisely.4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful!
This was one of the cookbooks used as reference for a six hour introductory workshop on Ayurveda that I attended. I had a chance to leaf through it, along with three other cookbooks, and this one seemed to be the most useful with a good background included on the basic concepts of ayurveda. I have USED it! As anyone who has a cookbook collection will recognize, this is the ultimate recommendation! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great hummus recipe!
I haven't tried many of the recipes in Greens, but anytime I need to make an appetizer for a party, I make the hummus from this book and it gets the highest praise. It's very easy to make (if you use canned garbanzo beans instead of starting with chick peas) and is much more flavorful than most hummus recipes. For this recipe alone, the book is worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Leave It to the Pros
I've been to the Greens restaurant in San Francisco and I had one of the most wonderful meals of my life there. After buying this book and seeing how complicated and laborious the preparation process is, I have even more respect for the staff at Greens. But there's no way I can spend the kind of time and effort these recipes require. Oh my, the work and patience required for just about any recipe in this book! This is not a feel-good little vegetarian cookbook. It's a serious, creative, and demanding book. It's hard for me to rate it. The book is certainly full of marvellously imaginativerecipes for outstanding dishes (if properly made), and so the content rates five stars; but it was essentially useless in my kitchen because it's too complicated, so it gets one star for practicality.Actually, I gave the book away to a friend. I hope she has a lot of determination, because she'll need it. Myself, I'm looking forward to my next trip to San Francisco when I'll visit Greens again, and let the pros do the job much better than I can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Insights and Techniques into Cooking. Buy It!
`The Greens Cookbook' by our foremost vegetarian cook and writer, Deborah Madison, with Edward Espe Brown, is, I believe, Madison's first book, yet it seems to be cited more often than all her others aside from her biggest book, `Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone'. On reading this book, I can see the attention to this volume is totally deserved. It is one of those rare restaurant cookbooks which effectively delve deep into the craft and experience of cooking to illuminate things which other authors consider unimportant of just give lip service to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful ayurveda book but just average cookbook.
I was excited to get this book. Read it attentively and tried two of the recipies. Kitchari for Vata and Spicy Vegetable Fried Rice. The explaination by Vasant Lad was good and detail. I like it very much. As for the recipies, they smells superb but are tasteless. I still recomend this book for those who like to learn to cook a ayurvedic balanced food. But if you are looking into cooking a delicious mouth watering meal. This is not the book. Still an excellent ayurvedic book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes the recipes need modification
My main complaint is that some of the recipes create absolute mush. I found that it helped if I reduced the water in some of the recipes (for example for Kitchari, I used 5 cups of water instead of the recommended 6 cups) and/or washing/soaking the rice or beans only briefly instead of overnight. This may be because I live at sea level (?) but some of the recipes seemed to err in favor of cooking too long in too much water.
5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent guidebook for healthy living
This is a book by Vasant Lad and his wife. They give easy to follow guidelines on the best foods for your body type, along wtih great recipes.I have tried a few so far, and all are excellent. The explanations for each recipe are very detailed and informative, and accurately give the best types for the recipe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands down, Best complete vegan nutrition book!
This answers nearly every question about vegan nutrition that you may have. Although vegans may not need as much calcium, etc.... as carnivores....the authors address all nutritional needs from the traditional RDA's.

3-0 out of 5 stars For beginners; non-n00bs should listen to the podcast
I'd been vegan for about 8 years when I read this book. It was amusing and I liked the style (I, for one, love making fun of overaged hippies; their belief that they invented social progress can be pretty annoying.) But there's not much in it for experienced vegans.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Easy-to-Read Helpful Book
This book provides the basics of many useful tips and changes you need to make to be vegan, all in a very informal tone. It was an easy to read book with everything helpful you need, from listing common animal-based ingredients to places where you can get non-leather or fur materials.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for vegetarians too!
Well written book with many bases covered on veganism and the ethics of diet. This book is helpful for vegetarians, vegans, and really anyone who wants a better understanding of the topic and what their food choices mean.Vegetarians who read this book will realize that vegans are on the same team but better players and can aspire to be vegan or at least as vegan as possible. This book is a particularly good resource for someone who has chosen a vegetarian or vegan diet for ethical reasons (primarily) and wants to know how to handle the `hell' of other people with their misinformation, pre-conceived notions, and generally negative attitude toward vegetarian / vegan dietary choices. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read
If you can only buy one book today, this should be the one. If you came here planning to buy several books, this should still be at the very top of your list. And while you're at it, consider getting a copy for someone you dearly care about as well. The Food Revolution is the one book that will tell you the truth about the food you eat, and how your food choices impact your own health, as well as world hunger, the environment, and the welfare of the other creatures that share this planet with us. In his inimitable, gentle way, John Robbins presents the facts about the impact our animal-centered Western diet has on our bodies and our world...never judging, never saying 'you must do this or that,' but simply presenting the facts YOU need to make informed choices. The beauty of this book lies in its readability. Robbins is an outstanding writer, and he blends anecdotes with hard data in a way that makes The Food Revolution highly accessible. In fact, it's difficult to put it down. That said, it's also a supremely well-documented work, as was its predecessor, the bestselling Diet For a New America. Robbins doesn't expect you to take his word for what he says...the primary sources are clearly indicated. This is a book for the scientist and the truck driver...for the secretary and the dietician. It should be required reading for all medical doctors, nutritionists, and politicians. It should be top on the list for anyone concerned with human health, world hunger, animal welfare or the environment. Whatever you know, or think you know, about the food you eat...where it comes from, how it's produced, what it does for your body (good or bad)...I strongly encourage you to read The Food Revolution. You may or may not agree with Robbins' conclusions, but I guarantee you will never regard the food on your plate the same way again. You will be challenged...you will be amazed, appalled and quite possibly inspired...but most important, you will be educated as to just how much power you hold, over your own health and over the health of the planet and its peoples, in the hand that wields your fork.
5-0 out of 5 stars Food for thought
Reading this book will make you think more than twice about what you eat. It is a must read for anyone concerned with their health, our planet, and overall wellbeing. Thankfully I already followed a pretty clean diet void of animal products. This book is full of a lot of facts (the footnotes are extensive- lots of research to back up the points) and draw a bleak portrait of the food industry in the US.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, and easy to use.
I found Katzen's book informative interesting and easy to use. When i got the book I read it cover to finish simply out of interest. She gives a historical introduction to her experience with vegetarianism and her inspiration for the cookbook. Her pictures and handwriting font make the book personable and charming.I would recommend this book to anyone vegetarian or not who is interested in creating yummy recipes that are easy to follow and great to eat.

1-0 out of 5 stars A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!
I loved the first (1970s) edition of this cookbook, just as I do Mollie Katzen's other books, and those by the Moosewood Collective.Unfortunately, however, everything I tried from this book was a poor imitation of the version in the first book (and many were grossly inedible). If you want a good, healthy vegetarian book, I recommend those by Martha Rose Schulman (I've never had a failure with any of her recipes; even the fat-free, salt-free are okay), or Moosewood's Low-Fat Favorites (which vary in quality; some are wonderful and other's mediocre, but none were this bad)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Cookbook Ever
I enjoy reading and using this book over and over again. After 25 years of cooking it turned this chore into an exciting hobby. Tips are excellent. Most important: healthy equals tasty with Mollie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Raw Cookbook
The Raw Gourmet should be owned by everyone who desires better health! Just flipping through the pages looking at the photos is simply mouth-watering! The recipes are easy to prepare and are simply delicious!

5-0 out of 5 stars Saves me a lot of time and thrills my taste buds!
What first got my attention is the section in Nomi's book called "Ten Raw Food Kitchen Essentials". Without this, preparing raw recipes can require a lot of time in the kitchen, and a lot of planning ahead. ("Darn, I forgot to soak the almonds last night.") This guide shows you how to be extremely efficient, the ingredients you need are always at your fingertips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheese Gromit!
I had tried to make cheese from recipies I had found online with little success.I was rather frustrated and decided to buy this book and see what I was doing wrong. My first batch was a chedder cheese which came out exactly as the book promiced first time.My second batch was a gouda cheese which I upsized to a 3 gallon batch from the 2 gallon recipie using the instructions in the book and once again it came out perfect.
