5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for every family
I consider this book the bible when it comes to feeding my son. I started using it since he was 5 months old, and I loved the results! I never fed him from a jar, everything he ate was prepared by me and as a result, he has a great appetite and he enjoys all kinds of foods (even those other kids consider "yucky"). He's 2 and a half now, and he loves such foods as bell peppers, olives, fish, onions, spinach and zucchini. His favorite dessert is fresh fruit. Needless to say, he's really healthy. I also have a 4-month-old baby and I plan to use the recipes again. This book should be mandatory for every new mom! If I could give it 6 stars, I definitely would.

5-0 out of 5 stars First recipe a success!!!
My little one just gobbled up the first recipe I made from this book and I felt so good knowing she ate a wholesome homemade meal. I know exactly what was put into it, I controlled the seasoning and she just loved it!!! I also recommend Favorite Family Meals by Annabel Karmel as well for meals for the whole family. My family is eating so much healthier now thanks to Annabel's amazing cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
This book was excellent for our child from her pre weaning until toddler years. With just a little time in the kitchen, we were able to make some yummy recipes that saved us money and frustration. I especially like the toddler recipes because we found they could be used for the whole family. I have made about 30 recipes from this book so far and not one has taken me over one hour to make (unless you count marinading time on some of them). Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is in reply to M. Korogodsky "Michael" stating that this book is "useless", and rating it 1 star:
5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to start Raw
This was one of the first books I got when I started going raw about a month ago (by the way, I have lost close to 15 lbs since going raw, and I haven't even had time to do much exercising yet). The other book had gourmet recipes, but what I love about this book is that it has a lot of basic information. There is a sprouting guide and lots of info on how to eat raw. There are also a lot of basic recipes - cheeses, breads, crackers, even whipped cream - that can help you transition.I have only tried a few recipes in the book, but so far, they have been great (I love the chocolate turtles). The only negative I have found so far is that the recipes don't give the number of servings, and since it is always best to eat it right away, it would be nice to know if it needs to be split before making it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite "cookbook"
Alissa Cohen's book is well-written, organized and used in our home. This is the first raw food book that I have purchased and it is worth every penny! Those raw vegan cookbooks that I checked out at the library over the past few months were not inspiring and the recipes "assumed" that the reader had experience with raw vegan cooking/lifestyle like sprouting which is totally a new technique for me.This book makes the raw vegan lifestyle more acceptable, reachable and possible using easy-to-follow recipes that taste good and are created using natural, organic ingredients.

Diet schemes come and go. Successful plans, backed by powerful media machines, become bestsellers with sequels and food-product lines. 5-0 out of 5 stars I'm no vegetarian, but I fell in love with this book the moment I picked it up.
"The Roasted Vegetable" is a wondeful example of a cookbook which stays "on task" and fulfills the promise of its title.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for vegetarians...
My husband and I were bored, bored, bored with vegetables until we picked this up. Easy to make recipes with a minimum of cleanup and absolutely delicious. We use our gas grill to roast the veggies for extra kick and ease of preparation. All the recipes use common ingredients- many of them you can just whip up with what you've got in the house left over from your weekly shopping! Serve any recipe in the book with a nice grilled steak or piece of fresh fish for an exquisite meal.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutley wonderful
I knew I had found a great cookbook when, as I leafed through its pages, every recipe sounded like something I would like to make. The vegetable tart featured on the cover is simple to make and always a hit.Every recipe I have tried has been delicious. Some can be more time consuming, but if you plan accordingly, they are worth it.This has definitely become my "go to" cookbook when entertaining, as the dishes are varied, uncomplicated, taste wonderful, and it's unlikely my guests have cooked them recently- although I don't know for sure- I've been giving everyone I know who enjoys cooking this book!!The bejewelled squash cubes are another crowd pleaser, and the herb-roasted root vegetables went over big with an avowed vegetable hater.Whether you are looking for a new side dish or a complete meal, I highly recommend this cookbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Here's the Why? Where's the How?
It's amazing to see the explosion in books offering veganism as the solution to the world's ills.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential forAnyone Looking to Prevent Chronic Disease
The author writes with zeal about the "new medicine" - vegan diet.Full of references and detail, this is a solid discussion of how chronic disease can be prevented (and managed/reveresed) with diet.As a vegan for over 3 years and a Registered Nurse, I thought I knew it all, but this book proved me wrong.Your average physician is going to do one thing, wait until you have disease and then prescribe medication or surgery to "manage it."You can do better.Take matters into your own hands and read this book!Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to Basics
This book, "The Vegan Diet as Chronic Disease Prevention", reinforces common sense attitudes toward the relationship between the quality of the diet and the resulting effect on health. This is the only book on the subject of health and diet that I have found that is simple enough for anyone to understand and yet sophisticated enough to cause most doctors and other health care providers to re-evaluate their practice of medicating the symptom and ignoring the root cause.Anyone doing research will love all of the credited sources and references, there is no "opinion" in this book, it is all proven with cited sources and studies. ... Editorial Review

It's easy to fall into high-fat, fast-food habits when we're busy, and who isn't busy? The American Heart Association has a solution: 200 recipes that are tasty, healthful, low-fat, and fast. The recipes--conveniently spiral-bound--take 20 minutes or less preparation time, and most take just a few minutes of additional cooking time. (Some require more cooking time, but you don't have to hover over them.) Don't skip breakfast when you can make Cinnamon-Bran Pancakes (total time: 11 to 14 minutes), Stuffed French Toast (16 to 18 minutes), or a Banana-Kiwi Breakfast Shake (5 minutes) in less time than it takes to pick up a muffin on your way to work. Your family or guests won't guess you whipped up dinner in a hurry when you make Pasta-Crusted Fish with Marinara Sauce (15 minutes), Sherried Seafood Sauté (15 minutes), or Skillet Chicken Thighs with Dried Berries (20 minutes). The book has an assortment of one-dish meals like Salmon and Brown Rice Bake, Black Bean Lasagna, and Chicken with Broccoli and Bulgur. There are also appetizers, vegetables, breads, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. All recipes include preparation time, cooking time, and nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), cholesterol, and sodium. Yummy photographs decorate the book. Read more

This cookbook is worth every penny. My husband's recent heart problems has forced him to a lo-cal, lo-cholesterol and lo-fat diet for the first time in his 60 years. We have enjoyed each recipe and, as the chief cook, I find them easy to put together.Living in a small town, ingredients can be very hard to find. This is not the case with "Quick and Easy".It lives up to its name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly tasty!
I'm not a fan of "healthy food" unfortunately - probably because the fanatics are so self-righteous - but this book may well have converted me.I've tried many of the recipes and found them delicious. Also easy to follow. It's not a "preachy" book, either. So if you'd like to upgrade your diet painlessly, give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good addition to healthy living collection
I found this book in the library, not long after I purchased SuperFoods. I checked it out 3 different times, and finally decided that both the information and the recipes were worth adding to my collection. I resisted at first, only because I am trying to scale down my cookbook collection. This was a great purchase, well worth the space on my (limited) shelves.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not good for normal people!

5-0 out of 5 stars Food that tastes fattening - but isn't
I was just looking over my earlier cookbook reviews. They say things like "I have lost 70 pounds..." and "Now that I have lost 80 pounds..." Well, by now I have lost over 90 pounds and I've learnt a lot about nutrition along the way. I've learnt that "good fats" and "good carbs" are best for our bodies and sustained weight loss. Many low-fat cookbooks are full of recipes featuring sugar and other processed carbs, while low-carb cookbooks often overlook all the calories in fat. Spa-type cookbooks like the Canyon Ranch and Golden Door series give you the best of both worlds - food that is calorie-conscious, healthy and delicious.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cookbooks I've ever had
Everything I cook in this cookbook is delicious. I can serve the recipes for parties and no one knows it's "healthy" in a diet-like way. Very interesting sophisticated combination of ingredients create wonderful tastes that have helped my husband I keep our weight down without deprivation. I think I've made the majority of recipes, and this is from someone that doesn't cook a lot. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book could change your life...
If you are like me you struggle daily making compromises between great food and healthy living. This book and a week at Canyon Ranch in AZ taught me that you don't have to make that compromise!

3-0 out of 5 stars Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners
I found this book disappointing, and much prefer her previous book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide, OK recipes
This book is interesting to read and great help in deciding what to eat to balance your vikrities (imbalances). You start out learning some Ayurvedic basics and then you can test yourself to find out what your dosha (constitution) is.Then you learn what foods and tastes agrivate or calm that dosha. It tells you a little bit about what the symptoms of an imbalance might be, but I got more descriptive information about that on the Internet. One reason I like this book is because me and my fiance are different constitutions, and this book tells us which foods will calm/ balance us both. There are simple instructions on most recipes that explain how to modify the recipe so that it suits a person with a different constitution. It also has codes for what seasons to eat what food, and every chapter or so has interesting blurbs about different foods and philosophies. That part I enjoy. And from my experience, Ayurveda WORKS.Fast and precisely.4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful!
This was one of the cookbooks used as reference for a six hour introductory workshop on Ayurveda that I attended. I had a chance to leaf through it, along with three other cookbooks, and this one seemed to be the most useful with a good background included on the basic concepts of ayurveda. I have USED it! 3-0 out of 5 stars Good but confusing
I have been using this book for a few months. The recipes I've tried are generally tasty, if sometimes bland, but it sorely needs an index by food, eg, beef, as another reviewer commented. Some of the recipes require creative thinking, and a bit of cooking experience. '3 large potatoes' can mean different things to different people, and if you want to use another type of potato?Equivalents in ounces or cups would be helpful. And "x cups of pasta" cooked?/uncooked?A novice would have a hard time with this. And some of the titles are more colorful than helpful.A meat salad doesn't mention the meat in the title, so finding it without an index is pretty difficult.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easier Recipes Needed
Hello-I really enjoyed reading this book. Heather's personal story and advice for IBS suffers is useful (at least for me). Although she does lay out the basic nutritional information on fiber and other trigger foods. Her recipes are far too complicated, I'm a graduate student with very little time for cooking. So the recipes are just too time consuming. I need easier and faster recipes. Some of the breakfast ideas fit into my lifestyle, but the dinners are complicated, although they sound delicious. Perhaps someday I will have time to try them. If Heather (the author) is reading this, please write a recipe book with easier and faster IBS safe recipes. I'd definately buy it! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eating for IBS- A Review
EATING FOR IBS is an excellent source of useful information for persons diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).The author (an IBS sufferer herself) writesclearly and with the compassion and understanding of a person who had lived with the symptoms of IBS for years before a correct diagnosis was made. However, she was not provided withinformation about managing the symptoms on a daily basis. On her own shedevised a regimen of safe foods, herbal teas and a natural soluble fiber supplement that (from my personal experience) works to effectively manage IBS symptoms. She identifies certain foodsthat can cause problems and should be avoidedor eaten very carefully, for instance with soluble fiber. The discussion of the differences between soluble and insoluble fiber and their effect on the digestive system and IBSis the most informative and thorough of anything I have read.

'As a health practitioner and advocate of Zone dieting for over 15 years, one of the most difficult tasks I face is getting my clients to comply to a low glycemic diet. Food is truly our best medicine, and Ms. Walker's book offers a delicious yet simple approach to accomplish a healthy diet routine. The book's cuisine facilitates a vital diet for all body types and shapes. I whole heartedly recommend her book and approach to all of my clients and to all who wish to receive the gift of health through fine dining made elegantly at home.' Chris Morris ND

5-0 out of 5 stars I've had Chron's for almost 30 years.
During those thirty years I have had three surgeries and have been on just about every medication under the sun. Nothing worked. Six months ago I started the SCD as described in this book and have amazed my Gastroenternologist with my progress. My bloodwork is all normal, my inflammation is just about gone and I am medication free for the first time in many many years. This diet may not work for everyone but for me it beats a fourth partial bowel resection!
5-0 out of 5 stars We've had amazing results from this diet!
This has been a lifechanging book for my husband, who has UC.Although it can take months to see results, we saw amazing results from this diet the very first week.We have remained on the diet for more than 6 months now and plan to stay on it permanently. The Specific Carb Diet is not an easy fix, however. To see results, you must remain 100% dedicated to the diet with absolutely no consumption of "illegal" foods. It did require a major change in our eating habits and my cooking habits. But it becomes much easier and just a way of life after a few weeks of adjustment. Thanks to this diet, my husband is medication-free for the first time in years! We are now eating healthier than ever.I strongly recommend this diet to anyone with a digestive disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Didn't Believe It Would Work Until I Tried It!
My husband, with Crohn's Disease, was told by his doctor that food had absolutely nothing to do with his illness or his recuperation. We proved him dead wrong! The SCDiet has led to "health miracles" for six of my immediate family members:Me (Celiac Disease, FMS, Severe Allergies, Asthma), my husband (Crohn's), my 83 year old mother (Diverticulitis, Hiatal Hernia, Bleeding Ulcer, Arthritis), my two brothers (IBS & Celiac), and a son (Celiac). Each of us have no symptoms left and have been able to eliminate all drugs pertaining to each of these illnesses and also reduce blood pressure meds.We were each overweight and have easily lost to within about 10 pounds of our desired weight; three of us losing over 50 pounds each. We feel better, have more energy, and look better than we have in years! We find that it takes less food to satisfy and sustain us when we eat whole, natural foods . . . we have broken the cycle of overeating and binging. The SCD has been a God-send for us all! Please visit austinscdfriends.com to learn how we did it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great hummus recipe!
I haven't tried many of the recipes in Greens, but anytime I need to make an appetizer for a party, I make the hummus from this book and it gets the highest praise. It's very easy to make (if you use canned garbanzo beans instead of starting with chick peas) and is much more flavorful than most hummus recipes. For this recipe alone, the book is worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Leave It to the Pros
I've been to the Greens restaurant in San Francisco and I had one of the most wonderful meals of my life there. After buying this book and seeing how complicated and laborious the preparation process is, I have even more respect for the staff at Greens. But there's no way I can spend the kind of time and effort these recipes require. Oh my, the work and patience required for just about any recipe in this book! This is not a feel-good little vegetarian cookbook. It's a serious, creative, and demanding book. It's hard for me to rate it. The book is certainly full of marvellously imaginativerecipes for outstanding dishes (if properly made), and so the content rates five stars; but it was essentially useless in my kitchen because it's too complicated, so it gets one star for practicality.Actually, I gave the book away to a friend. I hope she has a lot of determination, because she'll need it. Myself, I'm looking forward to my next trip to San Francisco when I'll visit Greens again, and let the pros do the job much better than I can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Insights and Techniques into Cooking. Buy It!
`The Greens Cookbook' by our foremost vegetarian cook and writer, Deborah Madison, with Edward Espe Brown, is, I believe, Madison's first book, yet it seems to be cited more often than all her others aside from her biggest book, `Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone'. On reading this book, I can see the attention to this volume is totally deserved. It is one of those rare restaurant cookbooks which effectively delve deep into the craft and experience of cooking to illuminate things which other authors consider unimportant of just give lip service to.
