4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful ayurveda book but just average cookbook.
I was excited to get this book. Read it attentively and tried two of the recipies. Kitchari for Vata and Spicy Vegetable Fried Rice. The explaination by Vasant Lad was good and detail. I like it very much. As for the recipies, they smells superb but are tasteless. I still recomend this book for those who like to learn to cook a ayurvedic balanced food. But if you are looking into cooking a delicious mouth watering meal. This is not the book. Still an excellent ayurvedic book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes the recipes need modification
My main complaint is that some of the recipes create absolute mush. I found that it helped if I reduced the water in some of the recipes (for example for Kitchari, I used 5 cups of water instead of the recommended 6 cups) and/or washing/soaking the rice or beans only briefly instead of overnight. This may be because I live at sea level (?) but some of the recipes seemed to err in favor of cooking too long in too much water.
5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent guidebook for healthy living
This is a book by Vasant Lad and his wife. They give easy to follow guidelines on the best foods for your body type, along wtih great recipes.I have tried a few so far, and all are excellent. The explanations for each recipe are very detailed and informative, and accurately give the best types for the recipe.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good edition to our weight loss libraries.
The Insulin Resistance Diet contains some very worthwhile suggestions. Limiting our carbohydrate intake to two 15 gram servings every two hours, and always eating 7 grams of protein with our carbohydrates, is an excellent suggestion to reduce the glycemic impact of our diet.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for women with PCOS
This is a very helpful book for women that have been diagnosed with PCOS caused by insulin resistance. The diet posed by Dr. Hart is practical and fairly easy to follow.I would recommend the book to all who suffer from insulin resistance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, something that makes sense!
I bought this book a few days ago and have read it about three times already!I have suffered from hypoglycemia all my life. I'm not terribly overweight, about 20 pounds maybe. I've tried low-fat high carbohydrate, low carb diets, the South Beach Diet. This is such an EASY way to eat!I have not had one hypoglycemic incident since I started eating this way, and I usually have one a day at least.I have known for a long time (through many years of trial and error), that I have to eat anything with sugar with a meal or it triggers a hypoglycemic episode.Well, this book tells me exactly what ratio or carbohydrates to protein I should eat to keep this from happening!Just the thought that I can have whatever I want, as long as I keep the carbohydrate grams and protein grams balanced, is wonderful! Also, I am one of those who always ate in defense mode. I was terrified of being caught somewhere without food and having a hypoglycemic attack, so I would eat before going somewhere, even if I wasn't hungry. Now, I know that won't happen anymore, and I am finally free from worrying about food all the time.I can't say enough good things about this approach.Obviously I haven't lost any weight in only three days, at least not that I can tell, but I feel so much better already. That alone made it worth buying the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have!
I borrowed this book from my local library, to test a few of the recipes.I am very impressed!Every recipe that I've tried has turned out absolutely delicious! The book begins with an informative section about the meanings behind the buzz word "organic," and the recipes are neatly organized according to age (in case one needs a guideline). The author has even included little labels that point out which recipes are vegan, vegetarian, and allergy friendly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and informative
I bought this book along with Baby Blender Food, and I really like this one the best.It has practical informationRE: safe food handling, the meaning behind nutritional and organic terms on product packaging, suggestions for stocking your pantry, and ideas about how to incorporate meals for the family fromthe recipes for the baby. It's not rocket science, but sometimes I get caught up in the baby food process and don't think about how to modify some of the ingredients for my own meal. She also has a helpful key that lists vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free recipe options. The recipes are pretty simple, and I've found that it's easy and funto make food for my son.It also feels really good to know exactly what's going into his food.I like the layout of the book, and I appreciate the information in it. Another review mentioned that she doesn't outline food hazards like nitrates in the body of the recipes, but if you read the book fromthe beginning, she has pretty comprehensive explanations of what is safe to prepare and when it's safe to prepare it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raising a future "foodie"
I've had a chance to make zucchini and butternut squash purees for my 6 month-old and so far so good!I like that the recipies give you an option for how to cook each recipie, for example, you can either steam or microwave zucchini. Also, you can use a blender or food processer for most dishes. The book also gives really clear instructions for saving food for later.I put the squash in ice cube trays; it is so easy to pop a "cube" into the microwave. If you have an automatic ice maker and don't have any ice cube trays on hand, I highly recommend buying silicone trays. You can even buy pink ones from Sur La Table (www.surlatable.com).Cubes come out cleanly with no fragments left in the tray.Get this cookbook if you want a little work on the weekend with the rest of the week as easy as opening a jar!The only down side I can think of is she is not as explicit about foods to avoid because of allergies or nitrates (spinach, carrots, etc.) on the recipe pages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars cancer cookbook
I use this book all the time and have found it extremely helpful while undergoing chemotherepy, all the recipes are very well thought out and very tasty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good recipes
This book has some good recipes, though not enough emphasis on sugar-free cooking. It is well-written and includes nutritional guidelines with a lot of easy-to-do recipes. I found the question and answer section helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of Information

1-0 out of 5 stars Book's info is obsolete and could cause harm
This book was written in 1985 (and printed in 1987)!That is almost 20 years ago and obviously not in line with today's knowledge about renal problems or failures. For instance, this book pays no attention/ignores "phosporus", the level of which a patient has to monitor very carefully to avoid serious additional health problems. Anyone with renal problems should review this book with their doctor before using any of its recipes, or better yet, the book should be totally revisioned or taken off the market before it hurts people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cookbook!!
I have had this book for several years, we have tried just about every recipe in it and they are all great! I get complements all the time on the wonderful food, no one believes that the recipes are from the Renal cookbook.4-0 out of 5 stars Creative Cooking for Renal Diets
I bought this book for my mom who is operating on less than 50% kidney function. The recipies are appetizing but a bit out of date. The recipes we tried were very good. The book needs to list the amounts of protein, salt, potassium and phosphorous in the servings.Elderly people who are restricted in those areas need that additional information to help them stay in compliance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hands down, Best complete vegan nutrition book!
This answers nearly every question about vegan nutrition that you may have. Although vegans may not need as much calcium, etc.... as carnivores....the authors address all nutritional needs from the traditional RDA's.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE!!!
As a person with allergies and asthma I should be more aware of my environs and intake than the average person. However, like most people, I simply go where I want and eat what I want and then suffer the consequences.Since reading this book, I have realized that I can eat whatever I want ... without any suffering! It has opened my eyes to a new world - you can eat well without penalty. This book is a must for anyone with allergies. The book is so effective, it made me realize that I had allergies I did not know about until I changed my habits!GOOD SHOW DR. 5-0 out of 5 stars The deeper side of cooking
This book is the very first which transformed me from one who dislikes cooking into one that is eager to cook and learn more and more!!! I just simply cannot believe this is happening to me. I have never liked cooking. And it makes for the most thrilling reading too!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes!
This is a fantastic cookbook for experienced cooks wanting to explore both Indian cooking as well as Ayurvedic cooking.I've learned a lot about the appropriate use and balance of traditional Indian spices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Tastes, Love and Wisdom
This cookbook has been one of my favorites ever since it first came out in 1990.Now 15 years later, it is ripped, worn, bent, curry stained and I'm buying a new copy. The recipes taste great, have greatly enhanced my family's health and vitality and been enjoyed by many friends. But it's not just a cookbook. The authors bless us with an Ayurvedic perspective on diet, constitution, lifestyle and body/mind/spirit healing and also clarify contemporary health issues related to sugar, dairy products and soyfoods in the light of ancient wisdom. This book is beautifully written, intelligently conceived and vibrates with wisdom and love. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Some concepts are dated, but overall, a good health guide
In the book, Mr. Kloss said of all diseases, "God has invented the cure and is waiting for man to discover it."The longer I practice as a pharmacist, the more I realize he was right.
3-0 out of 5 stars Informative
Good information but I find many of the treatments brief or outdated, I prefer The Little Herb Encyclopedia by Jack Ritchason. Together they make the perfect herbal library.

3-0 out of 5 stars For beginners; non-n00bs should listen to the podcast
I'd been vegan for about 8 years when I read this book. It was amusing and I liked the style (I, for one, love making fun of overaged hippies; their belief that they invented social progress can be pretty annoying.) But there's not much in it for experienced vegans.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Easy-to-Read Helpful Book
This book provides the basics of many useful tips and changes you need to make to be vegan, all in a very informal tone. It was an easy to read book with everything helpful you need, from listing common animal-based ingredients to places where you can get non-leather or fur materials.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for vegetarians too!
Well written book with many bases covered on veganism and the ethics of diet. This book is helpful for vegetarians, vegans, and really anyone who wants a better understanding of the topic and what their food choices mean.Vegetarians who read this book will realize that vegans are on the same team but better players and can aspire to be vegan or at least as vegan as possible. This book is a particularly good resource for someone who has chosen a vegetarian or vegan diet for ethical reasons (primarily) and wants to know how to handle the `hell' of other people with their misinformation, pre-conceived notions, and generally negative attitude toward vegetarian / vegan dietary choices. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read
If you can only buy one book today, this should be the one. If you came here planning to buy several books, this should still be at the very top of your list. And while you're at it, consider getting a copy for someone you dearly care about as well. The Food Revolution is the one book that will tell you the truth about the food you eat, and how your food choices impact your own health, as well as world hunger, the environment, and the welfare of the other creatures that share this planet with us. In his inimitable, gentle way, John Robbins presents the facts about the impact our animal-centered Western diet has on our bodies and our world...never judging, never saying 'you must do this or that,' but simply presenting the facts YOU need to make informed choices. The beauty of this book lies in its readability. Robbins is an outstanding writer, and he blends anecdotes with hard data in a way that makes The Food Revolution highly accessible. In fact, it's difficult to put it down. That said, it's also a supremely well-documented work, as was its predecessor, the bestselling Diet For a New America. Robbins doesn't expect you to take his word for what he says...the primary sources are clearly indicated. This is a book for the scientist and the truck driver...for the secretary and the dietician. It should be required reading for all medical doctors, nutritionists, and politicians. It should be top on the list for anyone concerned with human health, world hunger, animal welfare or the environment. Whatever you know, or think you know, about the food you eat...where it comes from, how it's produced, what it does for your body (good or bad)...I strongly encourage you to read The Food Revolution. You may or may not agree with Robbins' conclusions, but I guarantee you will never regard the food on your plate the same way again. You will be challenged...you will be amazed, appalled and quite possibly inspired...but most important, you will be educated as to just how much power you hold, over your own health and over the health of the planet and its peoples, in the hand that wields your fork.
5-0 out of 5 stars Food for thought
Reading this book will make you think more than twice about what you eat. It is a must read for anyone concerned with their health, our planet, and overall wellbeing. Thankfully I already followed a pretty clean diet void of animal products. This book is full of a lot of facts (the footnotes are extensive- lots of research to back up the points) and draw a bleak portrait of the food industry in the US.

2-0 out of 5 stars Repeat of information from other books
If you think you are buying a book with over 300 pages of recipes, save your money.Over 2/3 of the book is repeat advice about how to eat the "real age way".Along with this repeated information from Dr. Roizen's previous Real Age books is "silly" advice ranging from what kitchen utensils will increase your kitchen IQ along with how and when to buy produce.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not nearly enough recipes
I love Dr. Roizen, and Dr. Oz, who both have appeared on Oprah many times.Their not about fad diets, etc., but just eating right.I was dissapointed with this book, though.I thought I was getting a cookbook, and instead it was 3/4 reading and 1/4 recipes.I thought it was hard to follow. "You" The owners Manual is a much better book to read, which was written by both Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, and easy to use.
I found Katzen's book informative interesting and easy to use. When i got the book I read it cover to finish simply out of interest. She gives a historical introduction to her experience with vegetarianism and her inspiration for the cookbook. Her pictures and handwriting font make the book personable and charming.I would recommend this book to anyone vegetarian or not who is interested in creating yummy recipes that are easy to follow and great to eat.

1-0 out of 5 stars A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!
I loved the first (1970s) edition of this cookbook, just as I do Mollie Katzen's other books, and those by the Moosewood Collective.Unfortunately, however, everything I tried from this book was a poor imitation of the version in the first book (and many were grossly inedible). If you want a good, healthy vegetarian book, I recommend those by Martha Rose Schulman (I've never had a failure with any of her recipes; even the fat-free, salt-free are okay), or Moosewood's Low-Fat Favorites (which vary in quality; some are wonderful and other's mediocre, but none were this bad)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Cookbook Ever
I enjoy reading and using this book over and over again. After 25 years of cooking it turned this chore into an exciting hobby. Tips are excellent. Most important: healthy equals tasty with Mollie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Oil Protein Diet Cookbook
I would highly recommend this book to those who desire to improve their health by incorporating flax seeds and flax oil into the diet. The cookbook gives many ways to include flax oil at every meal and even for dessert. The ice cream recipes using flax oil are absolutely delicious.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Oil Protein Diet Cookbook, by Johanna Dr. Budwig
This book is the companion to her first book. While the first book is really a compilation of her various lectures to peers over a long span of years, this book actually explains in more detail how her diet works and also suggests diets that are nutritious to the point of being adequate for athletes in training. If I had to choose "one" this would be IT.As a cancer victim myself you can read my review of the other book about how well her diet works.Buying this book and following her diet will be the best investment in your own health you will ever make.Buy and read both her books, but especially this one. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The 1200-Calorie-a-day Menu Cookbook
It is very informative and has several great recipes.Needs a few more pictures and a possible menu plan. But over all a good book to give you some recipes to get you started in planning your 1200 calorie a day menu.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misunderstanding
The only complaint I have about this book is that I thought it would help me cook a 1,200 calorie a day menu for myself.I was looking for a book to help me learn to cook for 1 or two.The recipes contained in this book are for 4-6 servings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most useful cookbook I own
This cookbook is SUCH a good idea! The fact that it has so many menus that total under 1200 calories is so helpful when eating "less" can be so boring. And, that it has breakfast as well as lunch & dinner is unusual for a "diet" cookbook, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Raw Cookbook
The Raw Gourmet should be owned by everyone who desires better health! Just flipping through the pages looking at the photos is simply mouth-watering! The recipes are easy to prepare and are simply delicious!

5-0 out of 5 stars Saves me a lot of time and thrills my taste buds!
What first got my attention is the section in Nomi's book called "Ten Raw Food Kitchen Essentials". Without this, preparing raw recipes can require a lot of time in the kitchen, and a lot of planning ahead. ("Darn, I forgot to soak the almonds last night.") This guide shows you how to be extremely efficient, the ingredients you need are always at your fingertips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reading, great recipies!
I don't understand why some reviewers say that this book isn't for all allergies. I have 3 kids with different allergens. I enjoyed the easy "key" at the bottom of each recipe with different substitutions. Some reviewers said they were brainless, I say "give me brainless substitutions!" At the end of the day when I'm making dinner, I need easy, quick, and edible! I like the fact that the book calls for rice flour. I don't like cooking with other gluten free flours because they do taste icky. Like any cookbook that I have, there are recipies that arn't our favorite, but there are many more that we enjoy and use on a daily basis- Have you even tried the flourless chocolate cake, the the lemon cake, the soups, the great snack ideas? Any one who says there is nothing in this book for them, has obviously not read the whole thing. From one mommy to another- Good Job Authors! P.S -Awsome party ideas, our kids classroom loved our cupcakes this year!

2-0 out of 5 stars A gluten-free cookbook passed off as dairy, nut and egg-free.
Many, many recipes in this book call for eggs, nuts, peanuts and milk.My son is allergic to all these but CAN actually eat wheat just fine.I thought this book would have lots of ideas on things I could feed my son.But really it is a gluten-free cookbook which calls for his allergens and then says, "for egg allergies omit eggs", "for nut allergy omit nuts."I could have just bought a gluten-free cookbook and omited eggs and nuts. There would be no difference except that I wouldn't feel frustrated every time I read "omit nuts" and "use soy milk instead of milk" or whatever.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
I thought this book was going to be full of great recipes for parents who have kids with food allergies. Some of the recipes tell you "common sense" things; substitute egg with Energ egg replacer, which if you have a child with egg allergies you know that. It has a recipe for Easy Mac that has noodles, butter and a cheese packet. That is the recipe on the macaroni box. Sorry! I feel like I wasted my money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Low Carb and low fat - is that what you really want?
I've read through the whole book, but haven't actually tried any of the recipes yet. They sound good, but she uses non-fat products frequently.A good low carb diet needs good fats included in it.If I use these recipes I will be using products that still have the fat in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars even kids like it
This is my first review but I had to let people know that this book is so easy, fast and the best tasting food I ever made. We tried all kinds of new foods through this book that I normally wouldn't buy. I'm no cook but even my finicky kids loved these recipes. It's also nice to know we're eating healthier. Great book!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have cookbook
I am a diabetic and have to follow a diet that closely monitors my carbohydrates. This book has delicious, easy recipes that everyone will enjoy.I love the simplicity - every recipe has less than seven ingredients.
