5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book covered the cheese making process in depth, and I feel that I understand the process and have confidence in making cheese.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheese Gromit!
I had tried to make cheese from recipies I had found online with little success.I was rather frustrated and decided to buy this book and see what I was doing wrong. My first batch was a chedder cheese which came out exactly as the book promiced first time.My second batch was a gouda cheese which I upsized to a 3 gallon batch from the 2 gallon recipie using the instructions in the book and once again it came out perfect.
4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Cheese Making
Home Cheese Making by Laura Werlin is an excellent addition to any cheese-makers library. This book contains easy to follow instructions on making a fantastic variety of cheeses and is suitable for both the beginner and more advanced cheese-maker.As a novice in this field I found the instructions easy to follow and the range of cheeses discussed fascinating. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Reforming Fast Food Junkie!
As a guy who LOVES fast food (give me anything fried!), I've been disappointed to find my metabolism slowing as I get older.Translation: I now find myself packing on the pounds when I eat fast food. This book shows quick and easy ways to prepare some of my favorite fast food items, in a way that tastes just as good, but isn't hard on the waist line. It's a good thing, too, because I don't know if I ever could have given up the drive thru!

5-0 out of 5 stars The secret is out!
As someone who craves McDonalds french fries, but desperately steers my car away from the drive-thru, it's nice to know that I can still get my "fast food fix" without the guilt.I was wary of this book when I first heard about it from a friend and thought that the recipes would take way longer to make than they do.Plus, how could you actually make healthy french fries that still tasted like Mickie D's?I was surprised to find that not only was the food easy and quick to make, but it tastes really good.My days of avoiding the drive-thru are over.Who needs it?I think I've found this year's stocking stuffer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Food
I don't think you need to be a "fast-food junkie" to enjoy this cookbook. While the calorie- and fat-cutting recipies will certainly be enjoyed by fast-food lovers, the not-too-difficult, easy-to-follow directions let anyone create food that is low in fat but also fun and different.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my local!
I love this book. It's wonderful to get an update on both good and bad farming practices and dietary habits since "Diet for a Small Planet", and wonderful to see so much hope for better eating. The recipes all sound so delicious. My only reason for giving it 4 * rather than 5 is that I'm not based in a large city in the USA where these ingredients are available. But in some ways, this is the point of Grub; a call to learn what is sold by small businesses in your local area, and a call to support local farmers. It's up to me to explore my local stores; for me this means learning to use the ingredients sold by my local Turkish, Vietnamese and Korean grocers, and what is grown by my local Italian, Greek and Vietnamese farmers. Grub encourages all to learn to use what is fresh, in season, and healthy. So I can only actually cook half of the recipes - but that's about average, and the book gives me inspiration to change my habits to find some of my own.

2-0 out of 5 stars A book for the "Yucca Chowder" Generation
"Grub" opens by poking fun at people who get "cranky when the goat cheese isn't served at room temperature", or are "fond of restaurants that serve chocolate-covered edamame", and then goes on to gleefully serve up recipes such as "Yucca Chowder", a recipe which by itself calls for a dizzying list of exotic ingredients including yucca, "kombu", "recao", saffron, and okra. What is the point of lecturing for half the book about using locally grown foods, and then offering recipes crawling with uncommon or downright bizarre ingredients?Where the hell am I supposed to get locally produced plantains, black rice, and pine nuts in southern Michigan?Should I buy my "kombu" organic?Perhaps I should skip down to the farmer's market for the ingredients for their "Picadillo-Stuffed Chayote with Rutagaga-Garlic Sauce."Failing that, I suppose I can always go collect some "seitan" (what the hell is it anyway?) from my vegetable garden. It has been a long time since I read Diet for a Small Planet (written by the author's mother) but I seem to recall simple, nutritious recipes made from a minimal list of recognizable ingredients. If the child of that heritage has grown to believe that this sort of nonsense is sensible, then the whole foods movement she claims to champion is indeed doomed to failure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Half recipes, half food justice
The first half of the book is about how messed up our food and the food industry is in the US. Very informative. The second half of the book is recipes. I would have enjoyed less recipes and more ideas on how to make my urban kitchen, organic. Things such as gardening, freezing food etc. The book is beautifully put together and I enjoyed the content. I only gave it 4 stars because I was expecting something slightly different. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The Moosewood Collective has had big vegetarian cookbook success with other collections. The main aim of this addition to their list is to offer much-needed help to those who need recipes for speedy preparation. Most take less than 30 minutes preparation. Recipes include stir-fries, salads, sandwiches, bean dips, soups, scones, pancakes and desserts. Almost all are vegan, with dairy products offered only as optional extras, though there is a separate section on fish and eggs. Winner of the 1995 James Beard Award for vegetarian cookbooks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite moosewood
This is my favorite Moosewood book, because everything is fast, and a lot of the recipes call for things that we have around the house. There's an African peanut butter and pineapple stew that we make all the time, for example, and it's delicious (we make it last minute a lot so we substitute frozen spinach, which we always have around, for the kale, which we have to make a special trip for).We have 4 other Moosewood books but we use this one the most (we use the first book a lot also, and the new classics one also.Still life and enchanted forest we rarely use.Our other favorite cookbooks are Jane Brody's Good Food, Tara Duggan's book, and Quick Vegetarian Pleasures).

1-0 out of 5 stars For the rich and childless
Do you have expensive tastes? Are you rich?Childless? If so, then this cookbook is for you!I've never even heard of some of these ingredients and the ones that weren't too expensive are nothing that my kids would eat.In fact, I couldn't find a single thing that my kids would eat, and I don't think the average kid would either.I think most of these recipes are something only an adult would appreciate.Well, I guess I can't say that my kids wouldn't like ANYTHING out of this book. They'd probably like a couple of the dessert recipes.Check this out from your local library first.I'm glad I did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Every Day, Not Super Gourmet
This is my first Moosewood cookbook, but I have many vegetarian cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource
Bev Laumann's cookbook is far more than that: it is a carefully researched, thorough, easily comprehended guide for the IC patient. The level of detail is amazing, and is presented so that you can delve deeper if you are inclined, or skip ahead to the many summaries, useful lists and recipes. She is quick to differentiate between what has been demonstrated by scientific methods, what is common people with IC, and what is more anecdotal. The needs of people with related conditions are addressed, especially concerns about balancing low-oxalate and IC diets.Throughout, her tone is positive and encouraging without ever sounding condescending. The book much more than I had hoped for - I can't praise it enough. If you are dealing with IC and frustrated or confused about how to manage food, nutrients, supplements, or cooking, this book should be a terrific help.

5-0 out of 5 stars MORE than just a cookbook for IC!
This book is great. In addition to great recipes with easy substitutions for other diseases, this book includes a special treasure of information on IC and its causes, relationship to diet, etc. It is highly educational. I don't cook much since the IC pretty much took away my appetite, but I'd buy this book for the IC information alone! It's hard to find a more complete and useful collection of info about IC and the various diseases that too frequently accompany it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done!
Excellent reference for anyone dealing with the limitations of an IC diet.Well worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 1 for 1 - so far it's been great
I'm by far an inexperienced amateur chef...I tried one recipe so far: Salmon filets w/ pepper relish & anchovie vinaigrette. It took me two hours to prepare a 1/2 hour meal but the end result was great. I'm looking forward to my next conquest. Give this book a shot. Happy Grilling!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but misleading!
I liked the book but was surprised by the amount of fat in some of the recipes. Although I believe grilling is healthier than pan cooking or frying, I was surprised by the amount of recipes that had nothing to do with grilling. From salads to desserts. I was hoping for more on grilled desserts that are light and fresh off the grill. Liked the book, but was disappointing in many of the recipes and the fat count on alot of the recipes are high!

3-0 out of 5 stars Boy gets grill but how do you use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alot to read
I purchased this book about a month ago. Only half way thru it, but everything I have read so far has made me no longer a dummy when it comes to lowering Cholesterol. Healty eating and Happy Holidays. Great gift to get someone you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooking Can Be Healthful and Easy!
I have bought very few cookbooks over the past 40 years, but this one is a must have. The writing style is warm and friendly. I felt like a friend was in my kitchen guiding me into the world of healthful eating. Molly Siple makes nutrition understandable for the lay person and she gives great attention to the asthetic presentation of food. The author has actually made preparing low-cholesterol meals fun rather than labor intensive. It is now my first-choice book for meal planning. We are eating better and enjoying it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Begin the New Year!
Many of us make resolutions for the New Year. Some we keep and others are hard to stick to.I did not have a choice about lowering my cholesterol.I just didn't know how to go about it. I found myself in the Dummies section of the bookstore, and reached for Molly Siple's book - Low Cholesterol Cookbook for Dummies.I started skimming through it and the recipes sounded delicious and easy.I purchased the book and am eager to share the news that I have lost 4 lbs in two weeks. Not only are the recipes easy to follow, but the ingredients are all available in my local market. No mystery foods. It is astonishing how quick some of the meals are to prepare, and I just love Molly's little tips on what type dish to serve it in and even how to cut up a mango.I am having my cholesterol levels checked in February and will report my success then. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but I wish it didn't have steaming and blanching
I would ordinarily return a raw cookbook that had instructions for steaming and blanching, but this one at least says those steps are optional, and the remaining recipes are very good.
5-0 out of 5 stars no matter what you're eating style, you'll love this book!
As a kid, I spent very little time in the kitchen so I never learned to cook from my mom. In a rare moment, I once asked my grandma for her recipe for apple crisp. (Neither my grandmother or my mom used many recipes. They just mixed a little of this or a dab of that.) What she told me would never have been edible had I undertaken to make it. I keep the card I wrote her brief instructions down on for memories but I cook because of people like Renee who write instructions and measurements I can follow!

I have read several raw foods book and must say this is the absolute best one I have seen.It is much more than a cook-book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neither fast nor healthy, but darn good recipes
I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) Bette Hagman's books are the first couple of books that I got, and they're pretty good. *GFG-Fast & Healthy* is one of my favorites because it has some great recipes in it. However, I have no idea why she called it what she did. Maybe she lightened up some of the recipes compared to her 1950's style of cooking in the original GFG book, but after doing Ornish (*Eat More, Weigh Less*, Dean Ornish) for a couple years before I was diagnosed (familial high cholesterol), I can't imagine how anyone thinks that using this much butter, cheese, margarine, or butter-flavored Crisco (!!!) could be in any way labeled "healthy." Including recipes for salmon, curried shrimp, or mulligatawny soup was just silly. You can get those recipes in GF form anywhere. Maybe the title was wishful thinking.
5-0 out of 5 stars I carry it with me on long trips...
A wide range of recipes, a clear method of instruction, the fact thatI'm gluten-intolerant and allergic to wheat and the sheer amount of recipes make this one of my favorite cookbooks.May not be so useful for those without a true need for it, but if you're GF, you've GOT to have this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best all around GF cookbook
I have several other GF cookbooks and this is the one I couldn't live without.Others have suggested that the recipes aren't exactly healthy due to use of sugars, etc., but there are reasonable substitutions and I've easily reduced the amount of sugar in recipes with good results and this assessment really only applies to the baked goods, which we all know are things that should be limited in a healthy diet.I found the suggestions for mixes and other sauces to be quite useful, as it's very difficult to find those commercially prepared and they're very easy and inexpensive to make at home.Having the mixes/sauces on hand is where the "Easy" part comes in.Also, the vegetarian section is excellent and indeed "Healthy"!My favorite recipe is the bean flour crepes, in particular with a chicken/spinach filling. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes - different from most low carb recipes
This is not the run-of-the-mill low carb cookbook. It contains different spins on recipes.I'm having a great time trying these recipes.Heartily recommend this for the serious low carber!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST down to earth low carb book
I own several low carb cookbooks and this one has many great recipes and is not written in the usual stuffy medical jargon that is common place today.I recommend this book to anyone interested in the low carb lifestyle...it has a substitution chart and a glossary of unusual items...any low carber knows there are a lot of "unusual items" on our grocery lists, and it's nice to know what they are!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for the money out there
This is a great little book at a very reasonable price. It is full of helpful hints and quick recipes that should appeal to a wide range of tastes. Most ingredients are common to the lo-carb kitchen, or would be fairly easy to obtain. The sweeteners Sharron uses are Splenda packets, SteviaPlus and Sweet & Slender (luo han guo) which are my three favorite sweeteners. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent healthy cookbook for everyone
If you are just looking for ways to make healthier meals for your family this is a winner whether you are a vegetarian or not.The premise of the book is to increase the whole grains, and decrease sweeteners and refined products. These suggestions are good for everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Carb-Conscious Sensational!
Forget Atkins (aka: Fatkins) and SouthBeach, this is the ultimate low-carb cookbook since it's vegan and unbelievably healthy.I have been a long time vegetarian and recently went vegan.I had been lamenting to a friend that I was wanting to drop but a few pounds and seemed to be doing everything right with regards to diet and exercise. She recommended Robin's "Carb-Conscious Vegetarian" to me as a way of losing those last couple of pounds without deprivation.I immediately purchased the book and have loved every single recipe tried thus far.
5-0 out of 5 stars Carb Conscious Vegetarian is a wonderful addition to my cookbook collection!
I have a very large collection of vegetarian cookbooks and I have to limit myself now to only adding books that offer something truly special.Well, I know that I can always rely on Robin Robertson and I was looking forward to the release of this book.I have had wonderful results with her other vegetarian cookbooks including Vegan Planet, The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook, Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker and others.I actually own all of her cookbooks. It is amazing how she never fails to provide delicious, simple to prepare, reliable and flavorful vegetarian recipes and this newest cookbook doesn't disappoint!

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy resource
First off, I am on the Fat Flush Plan, and enjoy it very much. However, several things about the plan and this book in particular really offend me:
5-0 out of 5 stars Lose weight, lower cholestrol & cleanse your Body!
After my sister was told that her cholestrol was 319, I asked what she was doing about it.She told me that she and her husband (who lost 35 pounds: she lost 23 pounds) were doing the "Fat Flush Diet."I asked what that was and ended buying the book. After 18 months my sister's cholestrol was 198 and our family history points at heart disease.I read the book avidly, did the 2 week 'flush' and lost 12 pounds."The Fat Flush" food plan was how I usually ate anyway, however new ideas from "The Fat Flush Cookbook" (which I have since purchased) for making 'good for you' foods was welcomed.Try it as a lifestyle! It makes sense! You are what you eat!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic from the people at CIA
To put this review into perspective for you, it is written by a serious student of cooking that has been actively studying food on their own for 25 years.I have been focusing on Italian food for the last 10 years. My favorite cookbook is "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute of America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Dont own previous books by Paul Stamets, but have read through a bunch. THis book is a really fine addition to the library. Lots of information, lots of color photos, and an enjoyable read. Get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is an incredibly interesting + informative book
This is a well written, interesting book. And mycelium running has more relevance than I ever imagined (if I thought about it at all). In general, I'd ditch science books for literature in 2 seconds. But I just can't put this book down. It's definitely worth your $$$.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive mushroom/fungi book out there
Paul Stamets truly knows the material and has some great insights into the world of growing mushrooms. He succinctly describes how the science of the relatively unknown 5th kingdom (fungi) can be applied to mycoremediation to help unpollute the planet.Even though this sounds like a heavy subject, the material is understandable for people with little scientific or fungal knowledge and helps anybody understand hwo they too can get closer to mushrooms. ...
