Editorial Review

The Sugar Busters! diet lets you eat just about anything except certain carbohydrates, including refined sugars, red and white potatoes, corn, white rice, highly processed grains, beets, and carrots. This cookbook offers a variety of Sugar Busters!- acceptable recipes, averaging about 40 percent "correct" carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat. These recipes won't keep you in the kitchen all day, though most aren't produced in a flash, either. Breakfasts are predominantly egg dishes. Lunches include Stir-Fried Ginger Chicken, Chesapeake Crab Cakes, Whole-Wheat Spaghetti with Olive-Tomato Sauce, Fourth of July Macaroni Salad (colorful with red onions, tomatoes, green bell peppers, and onions), and Bayou Spicy Boiled Shrimp. Dinner entrées emphasize meat, fish, and poultry, with some regional and international dishes. The collection also includes separate recipe sections for vegetables, appetizers, salad dressings, sauces, and holiday dishes. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I was pleasantly surprised by this cookbook. The recipes are very easy to use and to shop for. The food taste very good. I had more energy and overall felt better. This cookbook is very helpful to me as a person with hypoglycemia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Tool
The book is very helpful in putting together menus for people who have to watch their diet. It takes a lot of guesswork out of what to cook, and portions etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars I FINALLY UNDERSTAND HOW MY BODY WORKS!
I am surprised at the negative comments by the 'vegetarians'. This book is for everyone and has recipes that will work for you! I have just begun ANOTHER weight loss mission and have already lost 10lbs! I don't feel hungry and now understand the foods that will make my body eat the fat instead of store it. I now look at all labels and will not buy anything that has 1 or more grams of sugar. Once I started looking at labels it was amazing to see just how much sugar I was eating without realizing. I am approaching 40 and my body was not responding to diets, exercise or anything. It is responding now. I am not a cook, but with this book, I am able to cook the recipes with ease and I like the meals! There are plenty of choices too. I hesitated before buying this book, but it was the best book purchase that I have ever made! Good luck to you too! I could hardly put this book down. Just like my new morning brew made from soy beans. Taste like coffee, sans the caffeine, and contains no tannic acids. I have no more heartburn and that is something to write about. Google it online under "s oyfee".

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book!
As a busy mom of three, this book has been a lifesaver for me. The meals require very little preparation and few ingredients. It's wonderful to whip up a nice lunch for my husband on his day off, or a quick dinner on the table for my kids in less than 30 minutes. The best part is knowing the meal is healthy. No more fast food for us!

5-0 out of 5 stars Weight Watchers Cook it Quick book
Speedy and tasty. I turn to this when I want a flavorful, healthy meal in a hurry

5-0 out of 5 stars An explanation of portion size
For those of you whose major complaint about this book was its lack of portion size, allow me to explain: all the recipes say how many servings they yield. And all the recipes say how many Weight Watchers' points are in a serving. SO: Let's say you've just made a chili recipe, and followed it to the letter. Let's say the recipe serves four, and each serving is 3 points. DIVIDE THE FOOD INTO FOUR EQUAL PARTS. Then you'll know that each part is worth three points.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource!
I am a raw foodist and this is one of the books that I would recommend to others. It has a brief and easy-to-understand section on why we should eat raw. This also includes personal stories, which makes it even the more interesting. Then, Brigitte goes into each food: fruit, vegetable, herb, spice, and wild. This section is like an encyclopedia of the natural benefits of each food. The the last section had a great variety of recipes -- more than I've seen with other books. There are also some Indian raw food recipies, which is my weakness when it comes to cooked food.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I really like all the info. It is really easy for a new raw-foodist!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the One!
If you can only get one Raw Food book--this is it! It includes sprouting charts, drying times for dried foods, Lists of every vitamin and mineral with the corresponding foods--even an alkaline/acidity chart. The recipes are simple. If you wnat more gourmet type stuff, I suggest Juliano's RAW. But this book is a must for every Raw kitchen--the most accessible Raw food book I've come across, and Thank You Brigette Mars for including research on uncooked foods--good research--there's a lot of hocus-pocus, magical thinking out there in the Raw Food World, and this is a breath of fresh air, because it's smart and straight forward. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Glycemic Load Diet
I have done every diet in the market for several years, to no avail.Diets, do serve their purpose for a short while. This book explains more about the body and what it takes to make it work properly.Loosing weight comes naturally, if one wants to take the time to follow the advises of the book.Note, I wrote advises; as usual, it takes a person's determination as to what one wants to do about one's body and how it looks. But, if we think of health, before looks, then the battle is won.Looks comes with being healthy, and doing things the right way. There is so much properly explained in this book,it makes sense that is all!I sincerely recommend it for good reading and good sense.Take the time to do so, it really makes sense.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poor GL Tables
The book provides some information regarding the GL approach to dieting but the values it publishes for Glycemic load are not supported by ANY OTHER SOURCE available to the average reader (i.e. the internet). As a result the reader is left wondering how to follow the plan when the numbers given in the book are not supported by other nutritional sources.Sadly, the only reference given for additional sources of GL values is the author's own website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I do not give evaluations of books very often, but this is an exception.Dr. Thompson has written a very easy to read and understand book that clarifies the Glycemic Index/Load and provides a sensible plan for weight loss based on the glycemic load and moderate exercise. His formula for determining the GL is a bit different from most other sources, but if you just remember to multiply other's figures by 10 or divide his by 10 you will be real close. In addition to a very readable book, Dr. Thompson is a very approachable author.I, and several others on a website that I frequent, have sent him emails to ask questions.Guess What!! He actually responds to our emails and answers our questions.Truly remarkable.A great book, a great plan that works for the present and the long term. ... Read more

It's so refreshing to read a book that doesn't preach "diet". It's a vicious cycle. What we eat affects our mood and our mood affects what we want to eat!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Nutrition Overview
This book is an overview of nutritional and dietary practices, and how they can affect your health, particularly your mental well-being.It is organized into two main sections: The Food-Mood Link, and Nutrition Know-How.In the first section, there are separate chapters about such topics as blood chemistry, carbohydrates, fats and chocolate, and dietary affects on energy levels, PMS and SAD, depression, stress, thinking and memory, as well as chapters on food allergies and intolerances, and eating disorders. The second section presents advice on healthy eating habits for positive mental well-being, with chapters on shopping and supplements. At the end of the book are a glossary, a short section of recipes, a list of organizations devoted to specific diet and health concerns, references organized by chapter, and an index.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information, great little book on juicing
I'd never heard of Jay Kordich, but from his bio in the book he's REALLY dedicated to the concept of juicing -- a pioneer, really. His enthusiasm is welcome, he knows what he's talking about and virtually every recipe is worth making! I bought a Breville juicer from amazon.com and I wish this book had shipped with it!
4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good book...
I definitely think it's a good book if you're just starting out.In the back it gives you a lot of info about the different vitamins and minerals what fruit/vegetable has it and how it helps your body.I actually ordered this book for someone else, and they were so grateful.Bottom line is it's not a waste of money.Good Luck everyone!

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely Better Veg Cookbooks Out There
Hey all--this book goes into fantastic detail on a ton of vegetarian recipes, but it definitely reads a bit blandly. If you're looking for a vegetarian cookbook with more personality, I'd point you toward the Moosewood cookbooks first. An even better alternative would be a little-known irreverent offering called Cooking com Bigode, available online at somethingconstructive.net/jamanta.Check that one out.You won't be disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great
We have tried several recipes. None have surpassed our expectations, some have not met them. The recipes often require unusual ingredients. Some examples pulled at random:liquid aminos, smoked dulse flakes, liquid smoke, zucchini blossoms, pomegranate vinegar, and barbecue flavored baked tofu. This makes it difficult to open the book and throw something together.I would recommend the Moosewood Cook's at Home cookbook or even Laurel's kitchen first, especially to beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource for foodstuffs
This is a great food sourcebook.It doesn't have recipes - it's not a cookbook.
4-0 out of 5 stars natural goodness defined
The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia is the holy grail to anyone embarking on a healthier, greener diet. Wood carries a relaxed, conversational tone through tales of sugar snap pea goodness or the brief history of quinoa, and I love her attention to detail in pointing out surreptitiously refined sugars in the most seemingly safest foods. At times, the lecture waxes a tad over-preachy, but the sheer breadth of foods covered, from South American grains to Asian legumes, makes this book a must-have for any cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent whole foods primer
Sometimes, the trick with books of this nature is being able to find the information you are looking for quickly and easily. There are a number of other books on the market that contain much the same information as this book does (in more detail) but what sets The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia apart is its remarkable ability to simplify the key information down to the most essential basics. Elson Haas' Staying Healthy With Nutrition for example, is an excellent resource but at nearly 1000 pages it requires a bit of digging to get to the specific information you need. The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia is always the first place I check for the basics before researching more specialized, detailed sources. It's to natural food what Ephraim Katz' Film Encyclopedia is to film...namely, the best resource for concise, general overviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Recipies
I'm not a vegan, I'm not even a veggie. I like animal products such as eggs and cheese. I even like virtually all kinds of meat. So why am I recommending this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Average RAW Rant. See Juliano's book.
`RAWvolution' by raw food entrepreneur Matt Amsden is the third book on a purely `RAW' cuisine. It really offers very little more than Juliano's `RAW The Uncook Book' and far less than Charlie Trotter's `Raw'. The only improvement it makes over Juliano's book is that it requires the use of extra virgin olive oil, since the unqualified `Olive Oil' is often extracted by heating, after the first cold pressing. The only major difference Amsden offers over both books is his bringing down the maximum temperature to 105 degrees Fahrenheit or human body temperature, depending on where in his book you read the statement. Otherwise, the book has all the caveats I've found in Trotter's and Juliano's book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rawvolution Rawks!
This is a great raw food recipe book for anyone that is either transitioning to a raw food diet, or has made it their lifestyle for years!Easy to follow directions with tasty pictures of almost every recipe (a lot of the recipes only call for throwing everything in a blender, and presto!), and a helpful glossary of foods that may be unfamiliar to some.Make sure to have a food dehydrator--you won't want to miss out on the unbelievable food he has that requires one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Practical approach fast recipes great basic book
The book has a number of strong points: the recipes are usually low in fat, there are many suggestions for vegetarian dishes but also options to add in meat, every pulse you can think of is covered and a good number of the recipes use time saving products such as already processed barbecue sauce or tomato paste etc. This has its benefits but also, in the case of some items, if you are located in Europe the suggested items aren't readily available. The book extensively covers different types of rice, grains, beans etc, and contains information on soaking and cooking times. There is a large section on deserts, rice puddings and other kinds of sweets with some original suggestions. Overall, however, few of the recipes sparkle with creative flair, many are variations of what you intuitively mix together yourself if you are moderately creative and have a well stocked kitchen. If you are an experienced cook looking for creative and exciting input, i.e. you flick through books and then assimilate suggestions to incorporate into your own cooking you might want to have a look at the Ajurvedic cookbook by Mirjam Gazin Hospodar, which also has many grain, rice etc recipes, however not low-fat and more time intensive than the rice beans and grain cookbook. If you 1) are not experimental when cooking2) want step by step solid instructions 3) don't like spending ages in the kitchen 4)like healthy low-fat fare 5) want a good summary of grains, rice, pulses and how to treat them and don't already have a book, then this book is a very good choice for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and basic but not bland
This is the book I have been looking for.I have always liked beans and grains but what to do with them other than tabouli and chili? The recipes are for simple basic food, ingredients that can be found in most supermarkets and I don't need my french dictionary !I had the Red Lentil Vegetable Stew for supper tonight and it was great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good way to start eating luscious greens
I have been wanting to add greens to our family diet for years but needed help learning about the individual plants and how to cook them. This book is a good primer, teaching the reader about the general character of each of the most commonly available greens, what nutritional aspects they add to the diet, their flavor, texture, and how they combine with other foods to make a better meal. Importantly, the authors provide advice about the best (and worst) ways to cook each green. The recipes are simple and tasty.

It has so many recipes to choose from. This book is great. I recommend it to all of my clients.

What impresses me most about this book is that the authors have been able to come up with a tremendous variety of ways to prepare the various types of greens without becoming repetitious or including any horrors.I created a kale dish from this book that became a newfound family favourite to my European parents--something I figure to be just short of a miracle, given a North American cookbook. The recipes are well thought out in terms of flavour and texture, and the vast majority have been planned out to taste perfect without meat, milk, cheese or eggs--a bonus for anyone that has to cook for both themselves and someone on any sort of special diet at the same time (and doesn't want to suffer).Even for the jaded cook, this book will provide tasty, natural, new ideas on what to do with a wide range of greens.Ive been buying copies and handing them out like some sort of missionary.A great, unique book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The most thorough treatise on the subject
This book does an excellent job of summarizing and organizing all of the work done by Michio Kushi and others over the span of decades working with cancer patients. Though Macrobiotics is based on much Japanese culture, this book is geared to the westernized/American reader so there is very little in the way of cultural chasm to jump over.1-0 out of 5 stars take it with a pinch of salt...
Sadly, both Michio Kushi's wife and one daughter have died of cancer.Being that they were Japanese, the healthiest and longest lived people in the world, this doesn't really speak well for the diet. However, macrobiotics, when taken with common sense, have been known tohelp cancer patients, some say to the extent of "curing" them.Follow your own instincts...and keep in touch with a trusted doctor!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have cancer, this is the diet!
I read the book and am fully convinced of the diet prescribed by Michio.I've just completely switched to a macrobiotics diet and feel healthier and more energetic. My blood pressure is back to normal so is my diabetes.I've read several of his books where there are testimonies of cancer cases where doctors have given up hope and given them months to live, they've survived for years and have proven western medical opinion wrong.Read more

Editorial Review

Ingeniously disguised as a weight-loss manual, this bestselling guide to preventing--and in some cases, reversing--heart disease through diet, exercise, and soul nourishing comes from renowned cardiologist Dr. Dean Ornish, the first doctor to prove that there are alternatives to surgery for clearing clogged arteries--namely, diet, exercise, and stress management. Citing his own published research findings, Ornish concludes that eating a vegetarian diet with only 10 percent of the total daily calories from fat is the first step to healthier, happier living. The other key elements--moderate exercise, fostering social support, and reconnecting with the self--take more time and care. For these, Ornish offers about 75 pages of encouraging words, again backed by numerous research findings and his personal experiences. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great diet.
Wonderfully healthful diet, and with a little exercise (my wife and I walked for about 25 minutes, three times a week) you'll lose like crazy. We added fish to the diet (not fried) and still did really well. One thing:the recipes in the book are a little tough. We recommend his everyday recipe book to solve the problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eat More, Weigh Less: Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Losing Weight Safely While Eating Abundantly
I'm familiar with Dr. Ornish's other books. This one did not come up to standard.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally some common sense
Some of the reviews I read before I bought this would make you think Mr. Ornish is a Nazi.In a society where we are looking for a pill to cure everything instead of using a little self discipline I suppose you could think that. This book is a simple straight forward approach to eating the way nature designed us instead of the way fast food has trained us.If you're looking for a healthy life and maybe to drop some pounds too, and you are ready to be realistic about it, buy this book and his cookbook. The food is great and you won't miss the stuff you give up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just desserts
I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) Bette Hagman's books are the first couple of books that I got, and I still use them every day. "Dessert" is one of the best for the extra information it includes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes so good, even non-celiacs savor them!
I was recently given this book by my celiac mother-in-law, and I am so grateful. My sister and I are both celiacs, and desserts like cake and cookies have been missing from our lives for years. (I mean, REAL cakes and cookies that taste like their gluten-laiden counterparts.) From the very first recipe we tried- frosted macadamia nut bars (p.145) to my 25th birthday treat- whoopie pies (p.118), my entire family has devoured the outcomes. Including those who can eat wheat. This book explains evey detail about gluten-free flours, right down to thier protein contents, and how and why they work. This is an absolute must for anyone who wants to enter back into the realm of heavenly desserts, or anyone catering to their beloved celiac.Just be prepared to stock your shelves with a bunch of new flours, and you'll be on your way!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Bette
I recently made one of Bette's cakes from The Gluten-free gourmet makes dessert. It was so good that my wife (who is NOT a celiac) and I finished the whole cake in one sitting! Not all of the recipes will be to everyone's liking and some of the recipe proportions need tinkering. However, considering what's out there for celiac's to use this book is a life saver. The pumpkin cake is great and the danish is incredible.A must read for any celiac. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WHO AMONG US DOESN'T LOVE A STIR FRY?
In this day and age with so much to do and so little time left to spare, who does not love a good stir fry?A well-prepared stir fry is quick, easy to prepare, nutritious and tasty.Chicken, beef, fish, entirely veggie - the choice is yours. With a little creativity and by varying the ingredients, one can have a whole new meal; the variations are endless. One originally associated the wok with strictly Chinese cooking, and this book quickly enlightens us on that thought. If you think one stir fry is the same as the next, wait until you read this book; it is one I would not want to be without. It is truly a cook's best friend. The recipes are quite different and each one I have tried has been absolutely flavourful and delicious. This book is a "must-have" for anyone who does not have the time, energy or desire to spend hours slaving over a hot stove! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid Stevia recipe collection
After all the positive things I had heard about Stevia, I decided to give it a whirl.Coming by good Stevia recipes is quite difficult ... perhaps because many people don't know about it and/or because it doesn't taste exactly like sugar.I have tried several recipes out of this cookbook, and I haven't liked all of them.So why am I giving it 5 stars?Because it beats the competition. Also, I think that if you have never had Stevia before it takes awhile to acquire a taste for it.The recipes that I liked the most were ones that had another "sweet" ingredient in it to help dampen the bitterness of the Stevia. For example, I love the Carob Chip Cookies, Carob Brownies, the fruit sauces and the oatmeal banana bread.I did not like the coconut peanut butter cookies or the lemon pudding. If you try a recipe and do not like it, don't give up!Move onto the next one and try again!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one to buy
I've tried several of the stevia cookbooks that Amazon carries and this is the one.The recipes use whole-grain, healthful ingredients - so you end up with food that's not just sugar-free but overall good for you. They taste great and are easy to adapt and tweak. We make muffins based on his banana bread every week. Also this author skips the evangelizing, etc that most of the other books are padded with - just "here's a natural sweetener and how to use it."Really excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The recipes are yummy!
My favorite recipe is the stevia fruit gluk. It is delicious and easy to cook. The apple pie is also terrific. Most of the recipes taste better than sugar recipes, because stevia tastes so good. I would recommend that youbuy a copy, then another 5 copies for your friends. Read more
