3-0 out of 5 stars different
The book is funny at points. I expected more recipes. I listened to the audio version, read by the author herself. She employs liberal use of the callback, so much so that she latches on to a few key phrases and repeats them to the point of browbeating. The recipes are sickening. I could barely stand to listen. If those women actually eat that way, it's no wonder they are all saving for lipsuction. If I heard her say "one runningoverteaspoon of vanilla" one more time, I was gonna find her and punch her in the face. Just say a teaspoon and a half of vanilla! The part about her mother having a stroke makes her seem incredibly selfish and coldhearted. Maybe being dispassionate is just her way of coping.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delish!
The good thing about this book is that it has alllll of the old standard recipes (Death Chicken, Chocolate Stuff) and a bunch of fabulous new ones... some that wouldn't clog your arteries with the first bite!As always, the side-stories and "financial advice" are hilarious and you'll find yourself wanting a ceee-ment monkey.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disgruntled
I did not find this book helpful cooking with SS cookware. The generic recipes are available all over the internet and are not cookware specific. Save your money. It's overpriced and overrated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy Meat and Potatoes
Healthy, hearty and delightful meals are created with gentle hands and warm hearts. This I learned as a youngster growing up in the wonderful ethnic mix of New York and New Jersey, with home kitchens brimming with incredible dishes brought with care from the Old World. To those around me, good food was the nourishment of both body and soul. This harvest of flavors was the great influence of my boyhood. From the time I was old enough to know my way around the neighborhood family kitchens, I wanted to be a chef. All my dreams came true as I moved into the fascinating culinary world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very tasty recipes
I recently purchased a set of waterless cookware and was disappointed by the limited accompanying recipes.I was delighted to find "Healthy Meat & Potatoes" by Charles Knight, and even more delighted once I received it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best of the potato history books.
Redcliffe Salaman chronicles the history of the potato from prehistorythrough modern times with the vehemence and passion of a zealot. This bookcontains a tremendous amount of information about the cultures that havemade use of the potato as well as all you could ask about the noble tuberitself, including dietary and cultivation information. Here, in a bookabout spuds, you'll learn plenty about human nature, the nature ofcivilizations, and even art. ... One potato is about 100 calories and is a good source of Vitamin C. While it is a fat-free food to start with, who can resist butter and sour cream?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Variety of Recipes
Let's face it, in America potatos are a traditional sidedish. This book actually teaches you how to use them to make everything from the simplest to most elegant dishes in an easy-to-follow fashion. I actually consider this to be one of my favorites in the collection because it does not require as many specialty ingredients as the other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, hearty meals
I love this book! Most of the recipes are easy to prepare, and the dishes are different from the typical fare you'll find in the average vegetarian cookbook.(OK.. there is one recipe for hummus...) As other reviewers have pointed out, it often calls for fake meat products, so if you don't care for them, this may not be the book for you. However, if you do enjoy seitan, soy crumbles, faux sausages and the like, this book offers many creative ways to prepare them.My favorite recipes are the Vegetarian Pot Roast (made with seitan and a to-die-for marinade), Tofu and Mushroom Piccata, Red Beans Bourguignon, Maple-Mashed Sweet Potatoes, Plan-Ahead Potato Latkes, Spicy Tofu Po' Boys, and Seitan Cheese Steaks.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is great
My only complaint with this book is that many of the recipes call for fake meat, which I try to avoid eatting to much of.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too much lettuce, too little meat-and-potatoes
I can see I am in the minority, but this was the only vegetarian book I've bought that has been a disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
I was attracted to this book from the title of course - in addition my family of six - only one other person than myself eats pasta, rice, etc.How many different ways can you cook potaotes?I don't know that I'll will actually make a lot of the recipes, several are not "kid friendly". Maybe some modified recipes, the book is inspiring and it is very interesting to read about the different kind of potaotes.I would probably check it out at the library first in hind sight.Only I am new in town and don't know where the library is just yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colcannon, Pierogies, Vichysoisse, and Samosas oh my
If this is the kind of book an editor of other food writers can give us, then I wish more of these largely invisible literary yeomen would take up the pen to do their own material more often. This is an excellent example of my favorite kind of book. It deals exclusively with recipes based on a single main ingredient. This makes it the book to go to when you have that last pound of spuds in a ten pound bag or you need some starch recipe to round out a meal and you can't face another rice dish, or you just want to do something a little different for mashed potatoes. Therefore, I am always inclined to give a good rating to this kind of book as long as the authors don't drop the ball between the kitchen and the word processor. These authors, Roy Finamore and Molly Stevens, have kept a firm grasp on the ball throughout the game.2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother

3-0 out of 5 stars One strike and it's out!
I couldn't find my favorite recipe for gingerbread this holiday season, so I tried the one from this book.It was truly awful.I think there must be an ingredient missing, perhaps some baking powder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!!
I have to admit that when I bought this book years ago, I was disaponted because it has no pictures. (And I love pictures). But...something cought my eye: Ann Hodgman says in her book "My feeling is that every main dish is better if you add some bacon" and actually another million funny coments, but that is why I kept reading and reading.5-0 out of 5 stars A cookbook that fills all the senses
Love all the other 5-star-rating-reviews out there, for me, same same! This and Beat That are two cookbooks that you will want to read right through (and try every recipe)Hodgman is not only super funny, but she also seems to pipe up at exactly the right time during a recipe. You know, when you are asking yourself, "Hmmm, is it supposed to look like *that*??!!"Ann typically has a comment such as, "it's supposed to look like this..."Many of the techniques that she suggests in her recipes are ones that I have used again and again in my cooking without a book experiences. She just know how to tell it so right.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing BooK!
This cookbook is filled with all of those recipes that you ask for from complete strangers at church suppers.Simple down to earth and even healthy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Trying to clog your family's arteries? This cookbook is for you!
Having grown up around many Mormon families, I was excited to receive this cookbook and try out some of the recipes at our neighborhood potlucks. The book itself is beautiful, but the recipes are so unhealthy that it would be irresponsible to feed these finished dishes to families and friends. It's easy to make something fattening and unhealthy - which describes nearly everything in this cookbook - and I was hoping that the recipes would at least have been modified to make them healthier for today's lifestyles. I'm not a health food fanatic, and appreciate a fattening meal here and there, but this book is over-the-top in the "what not to eat" category. For me, there isn't much in this cookbook that sounds like it would be worth the trouble making.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Family Pleaser!
This is definitely a great book for Mormons! The recipes taste great and don't take an entire day to prepare. The average recipe serves 6-8 people. My four kids eat what I make when it is from this cookbook. The other thing I love is that the book aranges the recipes by season, so all the ingredients are in season. Also, the recipes fit the occasions and weather. However, if you are on a diet this would not be the book for you. However, seeing that I lost 30 pounds when I finally quit dieting 6 years ago, and instead focused on eating regular normal meals, I'm not a fan of low-fat, low-carb, low calorie, vegetarian meals. If you aren't either, this is a great little cookbook! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars potatoes for dinner!
I bought this book because I owned others in this series (ultimate shrimp, ultimate ice cream)--and I'm not disappointed. All the recipes are for main courses with potatoes, so this is a book for real potato lovers.Great soups, really yummy stews, and some cool new things I've never seen before--potato casseroles that are way great.I love all the international dishes, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, French, German, African. It's so cool to make potatoes from around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars spud-tastic
Here's a great set of recipes for every spud-lover in your life.Every recipe is a main course--some fudge a little, like "steak frites," but the authors claim it's not steak frites without the frites.Fair enough. But beyond those, there are a terrific set of international dishes, from Congolese to Japanese, from Chinese to Chilean.Who knew the spud was such an international favorite? And there are plenty of home-spun, American recipes, too. From latkes to hash, here's a book that will make the potato the centerpiece of any plate. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Southern baking
Bakers who have exhausted BILL NEAL'S SOUTHERN COOKING will find a mother lode of Southern baking recipes in BISCUITS, SPOONBREAD, and SWEET POTATO PIE. I agree with another reviewer who praises the recipe for "A Good White Loaf." It's one of the recipes I return to when I absolutely want to be sure that the bread is going to come out perfectly (Thanksgiving, e.g.).

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, But Mediocre
It seems that all of the best American baking recipes are from the deep South: sweet potato pie, pecan pie, baking powder biscuits, cornbreads, and fruit cobblers. Any baking book full of southern recipes is promising, but this one is disappointing and nothing more than another, run-of-the-mill baking book, although it is a rather interesting collection of recipe clippings. The author's intention seems to be that of capturing the state of southern baking before disappearing before a tidal wave of supermarket breads and nation-wide coffee chain stores; he makes a good but not entirely successful run at it.It is a fascinating collection of ideas, principles, and anecdotes, but prospective home bakers searching for old fashioned, simple, hearty, and fool proof recipes will be disappointed. There is plenty of sizzle (a potentially valuable collection of old fashioned baking recipes), but little steak (solid, good, reliable recipes along with many helpful hints that you will want to do).

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry".With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. This book is a wonderful addition to any cookbook library. This book is NOT vegetarian. There are many vegetarian recipes and some vegan recipes, but there are also recipes that include meat.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book i have used for 20 years.
I received this cookbook 20 years ago for a wedding present. I love it!Each vegetable is talked about as to what to look for in buying, what its historical uses have been(either worldwide or in his family), and what the author's favorite way of cooking it is. The recipes that follow are gleaned from many different sources. Not low fat, but high taste.I was given some fennel last year and had no clue what to do with it.Got out Greene on Greens and made some fabulous fennel bread.
